- DirectorJ.J. AbramsStarsChris PineZachary QuintoZoe SaldanaAfter the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction. The Star Trek franchise is truly revitalized, alive, well, and kicking thanks to J.J. Abrams. Not just is it the best Trek film ever, but its also a sci-fi classic, right up there with the best in the genre. J.J. Abrams might not be the next Steven Spielberg....yet....but he surely has the potential to get there. Just look at his already sterling repertoire - 'MI: 3", the "Star Trek" reboot, and now its sequel. I am now feeling a bit relieved about the "Star Wars" sequels being hemmed by him.
Not since "The Avengers" and "TDKR" last year, have I had so much fun at the movies. And I see a lot of movies. Films like "Star Trek Into Darkness" is the reason why we buy movie tickets. As of 22nd May 2013, this is unquestionably the best film of the year and will be very hard to dislodge from the top spot. - DirectorMarc ForsterStarsBrad PittMireille EnosDaniella KerteszFormer United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop a zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatens to destroy humanity itself.A first-rate zombie film by all accounts. Brimming with palpable tension, replete with suspenseful moments, and pulsating with heart-pounding action. Fans of zombie movies or horror film in general will love this latest Hollywood rendition of sprinting, wall-climbing zombies. Traditionalists don't need to be put off by the this new, revamped version of zombie mobility and should instead, graciously welcome this innovative conceptualization of zombie action. One of the most delightful aspects of "World War Z" is that it boasts of an abundance of memorable, nerve-wracking scenes - the hallmark of most great films - that will remain with you for days after leaving the cinema hall. Brad Pitt once again proves why he's regarded as a global cinema icon. He succinctly balances the complex task between being a moviestar you'll root for and an actor who you'll empathize and care for. "World War Z" is yet another jewel in his already studded crown and shall go down as a genuine horror classic in years to come.
- DirectorNikkhil AdvaniStarsIrrfan KhanRishi KapoorArjun RampalA team of experts dispatched to bring in The Most Wanted Man in India almost achieve the unthinkable ... until something goes horribly wrong.Nikhil Advani has finally come of age and moved out of the shadows of his larger-than-life mentor (read Karan Johar). After promising a lot in previous efforts, which have ranged from decent to below par, he's finally churned out a film that speaks volumes of his until now dormant talent.
In "D-Day" we get a gritty action thriller that would put quite a few Hollywood spy films to shame. The authentic representation of spy operations and the attention to minute details is quite staggering and unprecedented in Indian cinema, at least for a movie of this magnitude. Along with it boasting of quite a few spectacular action scenes and hard-hitting dialogues the film is also subtly interwoven with a couple of delicate emotional tracks that literally tear at your heartstrings when their realization is achieved.
Rishi Kapoor is literally a replica of India's most wanted man, while Arjun Rampal is the epitome of a hardcore, taciturn action hero. Huma Qureshi surprises us even further with yet another brilliant act, while supporting cast members like Aakash Dahiya, Shruti Haasan, and Nasser lend plenty of gravitas to the narrative. And finally, its the powerhouse of talent, Irrfan Khan who completely steals the show all the way through, in spite of so many other resounding performances. Here is an actor who can literally do no wrong.
Whether you're an action fan, a fan of suspenseful spy films, or a fan of realistic gritty cinema, this movie has ample reason to be visited again and again. This kind of an action-espionage thriller is a first for Indian cinema and a pure joy for action movie fans all over. - DirectorJoseph KosinskiStarsTom CruiseMorgan FreemanAndrea RiseboroughA veteran assigned to extract Earth's remaining resources begins to question what he knows about his mission and himself. One of the best sci-fi films to emerge in recent times. It mesmerizes you with its intriguing plot, jolting twists, brilliant visuals, grandiose production, and infectious atmosphere. Furthermore, this is one of those rare sci-fi gems that has just about the perfect amalgamation of action, drama, thrill, suspense, and CGI. Being patient till the climax will certainly rewarded you, as all the intricacies of the plot fall neatly into place like a jigsaw puzzle, owing to the competent direction and brilliant narrative that keeps you hinged to the mystery and guessing right till the end. 'Oblivion' is an instant classic of the sci-fi genre and begs to be viewed on the big screen. Eat your hearts out all you haters. Mr. Tom Cruise has another memorable hit on his hands.
- DirectorKrishna D.K.Raj NidimoruStarsSaif Ali KhanKunal KemmuVir DasA group of friends, just looking to have a good time in a rave party on a remote island in Goa, find out that the island is infested with Zombies.I must admit that I'm a hardcore fan of the zombie sub-genre in the pantheon of horror movies. So it was exhilarating to watch "Go Goa Gone" in which directors Krishna DK and Raj Nidimoru have taken major strides in introducing zombies to the mainstream Indian audience. While baptizing this all important and long overdue initiation, they have also succeeded in hemming an impeccable, gut-busting horror comedy a well.
The film crackles with hilarious dialogs, nail-biting sequences, a fluid plot, a coherent yet energizing narrative arc, zany and madcap encounters ranging from the unpredictable to the completely outrageous, brilliant cinematography, and finally spot-on direction from the first frame to the last. The praiseworthy performances, especially from Saif Ali Khan (surprise, surprise) and Kunal Khemmu, only add to the overall viewing pleasure.
"Go Goa Gone" will go down in the annals of Indian Cinema as a pioneering film that shall hopefully, allow other filmmakers to explore zanier sub-genres that are already popular in other international film circuits. Not only one of the best Indian horror movies ever, but one of the best horror comedies ever made, even when compared to its western counterparts. An absolute delight and complete entertainment for a cognizant adult audience. - DirectorJames WanStarsPatrick WilsonVera FarmigaRon LivingstonParanormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse.James Wan ("Saw", "Insidious"), has carved out yet another horror masterpiece. "The Conjuring" is psychologically disturbing and also scary as hell. Mr. Wan delectably creates palpable tension and a nerve-wracking atmosphere by smartly playing around with camera angles and lights - laudable qualities that he's already exhibited in his previous efforts. But there are also plenty of jump-scare moments, without the Director resorting to any cheap thrills or mundane horror cliches. The plot though not novel, is based on a true story and is executed with gusto and freshness. Among the performances, Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, and Lili Taylor truly stand out. The penultimate scene and the epic climax - again to the Director's credit - are among the best ever in horror movie history - and that's really something considering the plethora of classics "The Conjuring" is stacked against. Mr. James Wan - please take a bow once again. You Sir, shall definitely cement your position one day among the likes of Wes Craven, Dario Argento, Frank Darabont, and other masters of horror films.
- DirectorStephen FrearsStarsJudi DenchSteve CooganSophie Kennedy ClarkA world-weary political journalist picks up the story of a woman's search for her son, who was taken away from her decades ago after she became pregnant and was forced to live in a convent. At its core, “Philomena” is a clever, wrenching, profound story that underscores the tenacity of faith in the face of unfathomable cruelty. Dench delivers one of her most recessive, stark, poise, charming, heart-tugging, and arresting performances yet as the soft-spoken, slightly frumpy Philomena Lee. While searching for her now-middle-aged son, she debates the tenets of her faith with Martin Sixsmith, the skeptical journalist chronicling her journey. British comic actor Steve Coogan plays the ink-stained scribe with a tone-perfect mix of acerbity and tenderness. Coogan’s role is written to be well-restrained and he underplays it really well. The dramatic and moral focus of the story is entrusted with Dench. Director Stephen Frears guides this arrangement with a sure hand. The result is a moving and exhilarating film, and the strange chemistry between Dench and Coogan ferments into a full-proof, riveting, and soul stirring emotional drama. As Coogan’s character, Martin Sixsmith, shrewdly notes, “Evil may be good story-wise, but virtue, at its most tested and tempered, is even better.”
- DirectorJean-Marc ValléeStarsMatthew McConaugheyJennifer GarnerJared LetoIn 1985 Dallas, electrician and hustler Ron Woodroof works around the system to help AIDS patients get the medication they need after he is diagnosed with the disease.Dallas Buyers Club, which is notable for the actors’ physical alterations, is ultimately about the transformation of a man from a homophobic wastrel into the leader of a grassroots campaign for survival — both his own, and those he once reviled. The based-on-true-events story follows McConaughey as Ron Woodroof, a gambling, womanizing, homophobic, self-proclaimed one-man rodeo drunkard who becomes an unlikely anti-establishment hero. He emerges as the leader of a fight to get non-FDA-approved drugs and supplements to AIDS patients during the volatile early days of the epidemic.
Ron Woodroof’s story has a universal appeal in that it examines the way in which our greatest challenges call upon us to be more than we are, or ever imagined we could be. In the film, Woodroof says, “I’ve only got one life; I want it to mean something.” His illness, in a way, assured that it did. When we are broken there is an opportunity for us to reform and allow our better selves to emerge. That’s just what this rodeo-loving, whore-mongering, whiskey-drinking, son-of-a gun did; and in the movie version of his life, he does so in a highly entertaining way to behold.
Dropping almost 40 pounds of weight for the role, McConaughey's sunken eyed character bears almost no resemblance to the smiling, handsome star many fans are familiar with. In fact, if you didn’t know that McConaughey was playing Ron Woodroof, you might be hard pressed to identify him in the film. But it’s not just the physical changes that make this performance so good. McConaughey portrays the real-life Woodroof on screen as a complex combination of sharp edges and unbridled gusto. He has an improbable vitality that emerges from some unfathomable wellspring of strength.
Jared Leto is entirely transformed. His inflections, demeanor, movements, mannerisms, and expressions are all aligned in service of his radical transfiguration. That outer work pales in comparison with the stunning vulnerability of his performance, though.
The films is a pro-active, uplifting and thoroughly entertaining jaunt through AIDS history, and the epic commitment of its actors to do right by it. “Dallas Buyers Club” is not only one of the best movies of the year, it’s easily one of the best movies of all time. - DirectorDavid O. RussellStarsChristian BaleAmy AdamsBradley CooperA con man, Irving Rosenfeld, along with his seductive partner Sydney Prosser, is forced to work for a wild F.B.I. Agent, Richie DiMaso, who pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and the Mafia.A movie that merits the word "best" in multiple departments and facets, in order to do right by the sheer spellbinding effect it has on you. One of the best movies of the year; among the most accomplished con movies yet; one of the most enthralling original scripts written; some of the subtlest and sublimest intertwining of comic undertones witnessed on screen; editing and cinematography that's top-notch from first scene to last and copiously serve in elevating the aura of the film; right up there for the greatest star casts ever assembled; one of the most unexpected twists and jolting climax seen in a con film; David O. Russell's best film hitherto; Christian Bale's best act since "The Fighter"; Bradley Cooper's best act that equals the heights he scaled with "Silver Linings Playbook"; another stellar performance from Amy Adams; Jeremy Renner holds his own in a slightly smaller role and against his more seasoned costars; Jennifer Lawrence's best performance ever and that's saying a lot as she manages to even outshine her grand turnovers in "Winter's Bone" and "Silver Linings Playbook"; and finally one of the most marvelous cameos showcased on screen enacted by Robert De Niro and played out as a tribute to the legendary actor's venerable career.
- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsHugh JackmanJake GyllenhaalViola DavisWhen Keller Dover's daughter and her friend go missing, he takes matters into his own hands as the police pursue multiple leads and the pressure mounts. An edge-of-the-seat thriller in the truest sense of the term. You'll keep guessing right till the end and will never be able to see the shocking plot twists coming. Credit needs to be bestowed upon the Director and script writer. Supplementing their vision to great effect are the superlative skills amply displayed by the editor and cinematographer. What we get is a tense, somber, atmosphere with palpable tension and despair.
And finally down to the performances. "Prisoners" boasts of an ensemble cast and boy do they deliver the goods. Viola Davis and Terrence Howard bring a sense of grit and fortitude to the hopelessness they face in their concise roles, while Maria Bello is a picture of grief in her limited screen time. Paul Dano is a past master at playing complex characters and he pulls of yet another winner. Melissa Leo was all but unrecognizable until you realize it was her once the credits start rolling. Jake Gyllenhaal delivers a sound and assured performance meriting an Oscar nomination in the supporting category.
But, the real show-stealer over here is Hugh Jackman who acts the hell out of his portrayal of a desperate father driven to a frantic edge. It is without question the best performance of his career and so far the performance of the year too. I think the best accolade that can be give to this fine actor is that his act in "Prisoners" literally makes us forget his iconic role of "Wolverine" in the "X-Men" series and spin-offs. - DirectorRuben FleischerStarsSean PennRyan GoslingEmma StoneIt's 1949 Los Angeles, the city is run by gangsters and a malicious mobster, Mickey Cohen. Determined to end the corruption, John O'Mara assembles a team of cops, ready to take down the ruthless leader and restore peace to the city. The first bona-fide classic of 2013. Reminiscent of the great James Cagney's gangster flicks of the 1930's and 1940's, this one delivers a gritty criminal punch with flair & adrenalin thumping bravado. The supporting actors are well cast, Gosling & Stone are great as usual, Sean Penn is sublimely amazing as usual, but its Josh Brolin who completely steals the show. Some folks are cribbing that the movie leans more towards stylized action & tends to lose focus on the screenplay. But in retrospect, this film is actually an ode to those great, fun noir gangster action flicks of a bygone era. Its probably just a case of people not having an appetite or not being accustomed to enjoy such crime movies. Not all great crime yarns need to be dead serious. This one might have taken a more fun, slick, stylish, and action oriented route, but it employs these tools to effectively move the plot forward, and it does have its fare share of gritty & gut-wrenching moments too. Memorable dialogues, indelible scenes, and a seamless narrative, this one definitely makes it to my list of classic crime films.
- DirectorJames WanStarsPatrick WilsonRose ByrneBarbara HersheyThe Lamberts believe that they have defeated the spirits that have haunted their family, but they soon discover that evil is not beaten so easily.Mind-bending, suspenseful, twisted, atmospheric, eerie, creepy, chilling, and downright scary. I'm running out of superlatives because with each passing film James Wan is certifying his position among the very elite of horror film auteurs. Admittedly, this sequel might be a notch or two below its predecessor in terms of overall effect, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it's a masterpiece, which will haunt and remain in your psyche for several days after seeing the film.
- DirectorJustin ChadwickStarsIdris ElbaNaomie HarrisTerry PhetoA chronicle of Nelson Mandela's life journey from his childhood in a rural village through to his inauguration as the first democratically elected president of South Africa.A great film about one of the greatest men to have walked the face of this earth. Idris Elba delivers a soul-stirring performance that truly justifies his selection to play Mandela. His performance adds layers and a profound depth to the riveting screenplay and taut direction. Naomie Harris as Winnie Mandela is a revelation and she completely reinvents herself from her earlier one-dimensional roles. The film doesn't just deliver a slice of history but it also paints a stirring and motivational canvas of one man's epic struggle, his unflinching resilience, his own self-discovery, and his ultimate triumph against all the odds.
- DirectorGuillermo del ToroStarsIdris ElbaCharlie HunnamRinko KikuchiAs a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures wages on, a former pilot and a trainee are paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon in a desperate effort to save the world from the apocalypse. Not since "Jurassic Park" have I had the utmost pleasure of witnessing such a great monster sci-fi mash-up. Like "Jurassic Park", "Them", "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms", and other classics of the genre, "Pacific Rim" too intersperses the plot and back-story succinctly well as the action unfolds. The characters and their journey are given adequate footage as the monsters v/s robots action. More importantly, as the action unfolds, every single shot, each and every sequence is beautifully captured like a ballet reaching its crescendo. Unlike most gigantic FX laden pseudo sci-fi blockbuster like the "Transformers" franchise and "Iron Man 3", this films pays immense detail to certain laws of physics and plain simple logic. The action unfolds in a grand spectacle and straps you in for a roller-coaster ride. But it also pays respect to your senses and enables you to minutely follow each aspect of how the fight scenes are choreographed. Wish all gargantuan CGI driven films were like this. In the end, "Pacific Rim" is summer blockbuster entertainment at its best and you'll be craving for a second viewing once the experience soaks in.
- DirectorSteve McQueenStarsChiwetel EjioforMichael Kenneth WilliamsMichael FassbenderIn the antebellum United States, Solomon Northup, a free Black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery.A gut-wrenching, haunting, masterpiece. A harrowing experience that leaves you feeling numb and soars your senses at the same time. It'll be nothing short of a criminality on anybody's part to miss this movie. Definitely one of the foremost contenders in myriad categories at this year's Oscars.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsIan McKellenMartin FreemanRichard ArmitageThe dwarves, along with Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey, continue their quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain, their homeland, from the dragon Smaug.A really worthy sequel to the first "Hobbit" film and another great prequel that forms a magnificent companion piece to the LOTR trilogy. Peter Jackson has absolutely no equal when it comes to fantasy films. Yes he might go down in history as a generic Director, seeing as how all his best works have been associated with a singular genre, but he'll most probably be remembered as the greatest fantasy film Director of all time.
- DirectorDavid TwohyStarsVin DieselKarl UrbanKatee SackhoffLeft for dead on a sun-scorched planet, Riddick finds himself up against an alien race of predators. Activating an emergency beacon alerts two ships: one carrying a new breed of mercenary, the other captained by a man from Riddick's past.David Twohy is back to his roots, and thankfully coincides "Riddick" with the tone and plot-line of the cult-classic "Pitch Black", rather than the overblown and messed up "The Chronicles of Riddick". It might have quite a few recurring elements from the series' first installment, but to Twohy's credit, the film also ends up standing on its own as one of those darkly haunting sci-fi tales that's interlaces plenty of action, suspense, and horror, to keep you riveted and guessing till the end. The character of Riddick has already been established as a sardonic, strong, dubious, and enigmatic personality, and here, this dark anti-hero just grows on you with each passing frame. Vin Diesel brings all his star power and macho charisma to the role once again, and reminds you why he's currently one of the world's biggest moviestars. The rest of the cast, especially Katee Sackhoff also do a good job. "Riddick" is a treat for hardcore sci-fi fans as well as fans of the franchise, and is sure to remain with you long after leaving the cinema hall.
- DirectorPaul GreengrassStarsTom HanksBarkhad AbdiBarkhad AbdirahmanThe true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the U.S.-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years. One of the best action films all year. Not just for action fans alone, as it has enough of tense drama, accurate detailing, emotional moments, riveting performances, and raises some really provocative questions without even being preachy. Anybody who enjoys high quality cinema, shouldn't miss Captain Philips. Tom Hanks might score another Oscar nomination.
- DirectorEdgar WrightStarsSimon PeggNick FrostMartin FreemanFive friends who reunite in an attempt to top their epic pub crawl from twenty years earlier unwittingly become humanity's only hope for survival.Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Edgar Wright; you beauties! Can this trio ever do any wrong? Apparently not. First it was a great zombie-comedy, then came a good, old-fashioned action-comedy, and now we get a rare mash-up of sci-fi and comedy in what is probably the most weird, outrageous, exciting, sublime, and downright hilarious concept ever developed on screen. "The World's End" is a film to be cherished for a long, long time.
- DirectorPeter BergStarsMark WahlbergTaylor KitschEmile HirschMarcus Luttrell and his team set out on a mission to capture or kill notorious Taliban leader Ahmad Shah, in late June 2005. Marcus and his team are left to fight for their lives in one of the most valiant efforts of modern warfare. An emotionally inspiring and gripping film about courage, honor, patriotism, and brotherhood. The intrepidness, tenacity, and willingness for sacrifice displayed by these brave souls leave us literally spellbound and humbled. Since this is based on a true story, you shouldn't expect many unexpected twists. Anyways, the heartfelt nature of the content and the positive impact it has on us as viewers, is enough to keep us thoroughly engaged and even entertained. Plus, the veracious sources of the movie provide ample scope for some heart-pounding action and edge-of-the-seat thrills.
Credit must be given to the Director, Peter Berg, who aptly adapts this heroic tale of unflinching camaraderie and irrepressible bravado. Berg's assured hand evokes a keen sense of pride and respect for our four protagonists. Along the way, he also escalates his standing as a Director of note be delivering a film that's leagues ahead of his erstwhile passable fare. Performances wise, all the actors delivers true portrayals of their roles, which blend seamlessly with the script on offer. Mark Wahlberg puts in another act that does equal justice to his star value and acting credentials alike. He's ably supported by Taylor Kitsch, Ben Foster, and Emile Hirsch.
"Lone Survivor" is a gripping, inspirational, and heart-crunching film on bravery, honor, determination, loyalty, and camaraderie. It's certain to go down as one of the best war films of all time. - DirectorDan ScanlonStarsBilly CrystalJohn GoodmanSteve BuscemiA look at the relationship between Mike Wazowski and James P. "Sully" Sullivan during their days at Monsters University, when they weren't necessarily the best of friends. If you enjoyed the first film, you'll relish this one with renewed vigor. It has all the ingredients which made the first movie a classic, yet its screenplay and presentation appear fresh and energizing. The gags and jokes are delightfully memorable, while the characters and inspiring plot will certainly put a smile on your face that will be hard to erase long after you've left the aisles.
- DirectorPaul FeigStarsSandra BullockMichael McDonaldMelissa McCarthyAn uptight FBI Special Agent is paired with a foul-mouthed Boston cop to take down a ruthless drug lord. Finally, a female-oriented action comedy, and boy has it been done well! The screenplay is peppered with outrageous jokes, explicitly hilarious one-liners, and scenes that showcase some of the funniest gags displayed on screen. The action, especially towards the climax, is pretty decent too. Add to this mix, two leading ladies - one a veteran who's dome it all and the other an upcoming performer who's steadily carving an impressive niche for herself - who feed of each other's contrasting characters and personalities, and you have a rare offering from Hollywood that takes us back to the good-old days of classic buudy-cop action comedies like "48 Hrs.", "Lethal Weapon", "Midnight Run", "Rush Hour", "City Heat", & "Red Heat". Yes, I've shown the audacity to compare "The Heat" to such memorable classics of the genre, because it's that good.
- DirectorRoland EmmerichStarsChanning TatumJamie FoxxMaggie GyllenhaalWhile on a tour of the White House with his young daughter, a Capitol policeman springs into action to save his child and protect the president from a heavily armed group of paramilitary invaders.Loved every minute of it. To hell with all the naysayers and the (obvious) comparisons with "Olympus has fallen" and the PG-13 rating gripe. Like me, if you enjoyed "Olympus Has Fallen", you'll definitely relish this action bonanza too. In fact, I'll go even further and state that it's even better and slightly more coherent, if not realistic, than the former. Boasting of pulsating action sequences, brilliant set designs, witty one liners, decent comic relief, a plausible plot, believable plot narration, and one of the most outrageous car chase scenes to boot, this movie has got it all. Sci-fi and action movie Director Roland Emerich might never be regarded in the same breath as similar genre auteurs like Spielberg, Cameron, Nolan, John McTiernan, or Richard Donner, and for good measure. But nobody can deny one thing, the man knows how to create an entertaining and adrenaline-pumping blockbuster, unlike some hacks (ref., Bay).
- DirectorEvan GoldbergSeth RogenStarsJames FrancoJonah HillSeth RogenSix Los Angeles celebrities are stuck in James Franco's house after a series of devastating events just destroyed the city. Inside, the group not only have to face the apocalypse, but themselves.Brilliantly conceptualized, smartly written, evenly paced, and outrageously hilarious. "This Is The End" is a high caliber adult comedy. Another winner from the team of Evan Goldberg, Seth Rogen, James Franco, and Danny McBride.
- DirectorRyu Seung-wanStarsHa Jung-wooHan Suk-kyuRyu Seung-beomJong-seong, a North Korean ghost agent, interrupts an illegal arms sale in Berlin. A notorious North Korean agent tests the loyalties of everyone involved as Jong-Seong prepares to make the ultimate sacrifice.Top-notch action thriller. First rate spy film. Impeccable direction, gripping plot, complex narrative, flawless performances, crisp dialogues, brilliant twists, excellent cinematography, and pulsating action. Korean cinema never ceases to amaze us and keeps scaling new heights.
- DirectorDean ParisotStarsBruce WillisHelen MirrenJohn MalkovichRetired CIA agent Frank Moses reunites his unlikely team of elite operatives for a global quest to track down a missing portable nuclear device.Wow, along with "The Heat', we've had two great action-comedies in a single year, after being starved of this rare feast for ages. Now that's really something. "Red 2" is as funny as the original & surpasses it in terms of spectacle and scale. What it lacks in its screenplay and narrative, it more than makes up for in its thrilling action scenes, humor, and crackling chemistry between its actors - just like its classic predecessor. Bruce Willis once again proves why he's revered as one of the greatest macho movie-icons of all time - the man puts most younger leading men to shame at his age. Malkovich, Mirren, Parker, Zeta-Jones, Hopkins, and Byung-hun are all spot-on. Fans of action movies - especially light-hearted action-comedies - don't make the mistake of missing this one.
- DirectorAntoine FuquaStarsGerard ButlerAaron EckhartMorgan FreemanSecret Service agent Mike Banning finds himself trapped inside the White House in the wake of a terrorist attack and works with national security to rescue the President from his kidnappers.Heart-pounding, adrenaline-pumping, fist-thumping, edge-of-the-seat action, that makes you cheer, clap, and even be tempted to whistle for the protagonist's bravado in the face of unrelenting adversity. After ages, a cool and enjoyable action flick that doesn't belong to a franchise has come along, and it demands you to savor every intense moment of it. All the main characters perform their roles exceedingly well and the direction and SFX are both noteworthy. Its tone isn't dark, yet it makes a profound impact. The film is just plain, good-old, brawny fun that harks back to the glorious days of 80's and 90's action films. Interspersed with some memorable one-liners, 'Olympus Has Fallen', deservedly merits a position as one of the best in its genre to emerge in recent times, and it will stay with you long after you've left the theater.
- DirectorNeeraj PandeyStarsAkshay KumarAnupam KherManoj BajpayeeA gang of con-men rob prominent rich businessmen and politicians by posing as C.B.I and income tax officers.Indian cinema's first real heist film & an instant classic of the crime genre. Manoj Bajpayee and Jimmy Shergill are simply sublime and Anupam Kher is truly praise-worthy, but its Akshay Kumar who leaves you just spellbound after eons and reminds you that beneath all the Rowdys and Khiladis and Jokers and Desi Boyz and other mediocre stuff, there is a supremely talented actor that surfaces way too infrequently. His performance & star power along with Neeraj Pandey's crackerjack direction are the heart & soul of Special Chabbis.
- DirectorTodd PhillipsStarsBradley CooperZach GalifianakisEd HelmsWhen one of their own is kidnapped by an angry gangster, the Wolf Pack must track down Mr. Chow, who has escaped from prison and is on the run.The bad taste of the second installment has been completely washed away and we are fortunately left with evocative memories of the classic comedy of the first "Hangover". This film is quintessential R-rated hilarity at its sublime best. The kind of comedy that can even make absurdity look believable and flaws look inconsequential, just because its so damn funny! "Hangover Part 3" is overflowing with laugh-out-loud moments and hysterically funny dialogues, that are backed by the effortless comic timing of Bradley Cooper, the adorable goofiness of Ed Helms, the pseudo-flamboyance of John Goodman, and the devious wickedness of Ken Jeong (Mr. Chow) coupled wit his one-of-a-kind China-man accent. But, finally, its Zach Galifianakis who completely steals the show from the first frame to the last. Make no mistake, "Hangover Part 3" is Galifianakis' out-and-out, and he potently shoulders it, proving, that in the end, its talent that ultimately talks in cinema and nothing else.
- DirectorAbhishek KapoorStarsAmit SadhSushant Singh RajputRajkummar RaoThree friends growing up in India at the turn of the millennium set out to open a training academy to produce the country's next cricket stars.Great buddy drama that showcases the values and essence of friendship with the right mix of fun, chutzpah, and emotional content. Abhishek Kapoor's direction seamlessly drives this otherwise tough narrative and Sushant Singh Rajput dashes on to the big screen with one of the best debuts in Bollywood history.
- DirectorPierre CoffinChris RenaudStarsSteve CarellKristen WiigBenjamin BrattWhen Gru, the world's most super-bad turned super-dad has been recruited by a team of officials to stop lethal muscle and a host of Gru's own, he has to fight back with new gadgetry, cars, and more minion madness.Just about a tad behind its esteemed predecessor, which was a surprisingly runaway hit, this delightful little firecracker is not surprisingly as enjoyable and memorable as the first installment. Guaranteed to plaster a smile right across your entire visage, this delightfully funny tale has some heartfelt moments too, and will certainly appease adults and kids in equal measure. Steve Carell and Russell Brand as the voices of Gru and Dr. Nefario respectively are once again spot-on.
- DirectorLouis LeterrierStarsJesse EisenbergCommonMark RuffaloAn FBI agent and an Interpol detective track a team of illusionists who pull off bank heists during their performances, and reward their audiences with the money.Unabashedly entertaining, relentlessly engrossing, and delightfully mesmerizing. "Now You See Me" is the kind of heist film that cockily displays the lighter side of entertainment in the crime genre with oodles of style and chutzpah. But the discerning viewer too gets his share of the pie with the ample twists and turns, which keep you riveted and guessing right till the end - a rare feat to accomplish in movies these days. Boasting of an all star cast, each actor brings forth a unique charm and persona to his/her role. The icing on the cake is the jolting twist at the grand finale, which knocks you spellbound and leaves you with a savory taste in its aftermath. You can't help but yearn for a sequel to this intricately wound tale at the earliest.
- DirectorGore VerbinskiStarsJohnny DeppArmie HammerWilliam FichtnerNative American warrior Tonto recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid, a man of the law, into a legend of justice.Seems like the "pseudo-cool social networking generation" and the "irresponsible media" wanted this film to fail from the onset for some strange reason (like most of their reasons), and they were granted their heart's desire. For everybody else who actually enjoy great film from a totally objective viewpoint, "The Lone Ranger" is a first-rate western with high-class thrills and entertainment.
- DirectorAlan TaylorStarsChris HemsworthNatalie PortmanTom HiddlestonWhen the Dark Elves attempt to plunge the universe into darkness, Thor must embark on a perilous and personal journey that will reunite him with doctor Jane Foster.Another spectacular action film from Marvel Studios. Plot and narrative-wise, it's more in league with "The Avengers", the first two "Iron Man Films", and its own predecessor; and thankfully nowhere near the messes that were "Captain America", "Iron Man 3", or the Ghost Rider" films.
- DirectorBrian HelgelandStarsChadwick BosemanT.R. Harrison Ford deservedly merits his second Oscar nomination for his raw and stirring portrayal of the Brooklyn Dodgers' team executive, Branch Rickey.
- DirectorAbbas Alibhai BurmawallaMastan Alibhai BurmawallaStarsSaif Ali KhanAnil KapoorJohn AbrahamRanvir treads through the world of the Indian mafia in Turkey as he looks to avenge the death of his lover and partner in crime.Double the twists, double the action, double the stunts, double the suspense, double the thrill, double the excitement, and overall, double the fun. The only deterrent this slick film has is the acting from most of the lead performers. But, whenever the performances start dipping way below par, the legendary Anil Kapoor steps in to save the day with some witty one-liners. If you have fallen in love with Race with repeated viewings over a period of time, then you'll instantly take an affinity to its sequel which will linger with you long after its conclusion.
- DirectorAlexander PayneStarsBruce DernWill ForteJune SquibbAn aging, booze-addled father makes the trip from Montana to Nebraska with his estranged son in order to claim a million-dollar Mega Sweepstakes Marketing prize. An excellent family drama and one of the best road movies ever filmed. Alexander Payne deftly shows a loving, realistic, and dysfunctional family that stand by each other come what may. The screenplay is filled with poignant, heartwarming, funny, tragic, uplifting, and truly touching moments, which are subtly depicted through some astute direction and noteworthy performances. Even if you can't empathize with every dysfunctional character in this family ensemble, you'll be sure to relate to a few of the traits and decisions displayed by at least some of these marvelously written characters. What elevates the movie several notches further, are the amazingly nuanced performances of every single actor on-screen, even the bit players. And out of these wonderfully assorted performers, shines Bruce Dern like a glistening emerald. His mesmerizing portrayal of the aging patriarch is filled with realism, accurate mannerisms, fine nuances, forlorn stares, astounding inflections, and a body language that conveys his character's backstory without the need of the Director including it. Another performance that merits special mention is that of June Squibb, who lends apt support as Dern's overbearing but eternally caring wife. To put it simply - "Nebraska" is a brilliant film that just can't be missed.
- DirectorHany Abu-AssadStarsAdam BakriLeem LubanyEyad HouraniA young Palestinian freedom fighter agrees to work as an informant after he's tricked into an admission of guilt by association in the wake of an Israeli soldier's killing. An exemplary political thriller that highlights profound political issues without ever being preachy or taking sides. (Very few Bollywood films manage this while addressing similar issues in their screenplay). The Director's handling of the plot narrative is impeccable and I'll even stick my neck out and say that "Omar" is quite frankly the best Palestinian film out there.
- DirectorPeter SegalStarsRobert De NiroSylvester StalloneKim BasingerA pair of aging boxing rivals are coaxed out of retirement to fight one final bout, thirty years after their last match.Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro - two actors who delivered two of the greatest boxing movies ever team up for a swansong boxing film that almost mirrors their careers. How could this ever go wrong? Well it doesn't and we are treated to a succinctly delectable sports drama that's filled with funny moments, inspiration scenes, romance, family bonding, sportsmanship, undying tenacity, and a triumph of the human spirit. An-out-an-out feel-good movie that will certainly hold up well for multiple viewings.
- DirectorRakesh RoshanStarsHrithik RoshanVivek OberoiPriyanka Chopra JonasKrrish and his scientist father must save the world and their own family from an evil man named Kaal and his gang of mutants, led by the ruthless Kaya.Bollywood's first really good superhero film. Admittedly more than a few of its characters are inspired or amalgamated from their Hollywood counterparts, but they have been portrayed in a way that ultimately makes us warm up to their home-bred avatars. And truth be told, even though it mightn't be in the league of "The Avengers", "The Dark Knight Trilogy", most of the "X-Men" films, "Thor 1 and 2", or the first two "Iron Man" movies, it's still way better than overblown, mind-numbing CGI turds such as "Iron Man 3", "Captain America", or "Green Lantern". The VFX are totally indigenous and a landmark for Indian cinema. Many of the action scenes stay with you long after you've exited the movie hall, and the climax, especially, is something to be marveled at. If you can just tune off your senses during the the unnecessary and corny songs, (there are only about three of them) then you'll definitely be entertained to the highest levels by the plot, drama, and mind-blowing action of "Krrish 3". Ultimately, it's a movie that effectively conveys and permeates a overall aura of good triumphing over evil in the end, no matter what the odds.
- DirectorChris WedgeStarsAmanda SeyfriedJosh HutchersonBeyoncéA teenager finds herself transported to a deep forest setting where a battle between the forces of good and evil is taking place. She bands together with a ragtag group of characters to save their world--and ours.Maybe the title went a bit overboard but the movie is nothing short of brilliant. A heartwarming tale, with some lovely emotional touches and an inspiring, old-fashioned, good v/s evil plot. The animation and effects are spot-on from first frame to last. The characters stay with you long after the lights come on. The action sequences are exhilarating and more importantly, can be easily followed without ever going overboard. Basically, it is everything that a great animation film should be.
- DirectorStéphane AubierVincent PatarBenjamin RennerStarsLambert WilsonPauline BrunnerAnne-Marie LoopThe story of an unlikely friendship between a bear, Ernest, and a young mouse named Celestine.Simplistic, sublime, superlative. Classic hand-drawn animation set against a picturesque parisian background that is filled with an ambiance of great human divide and strong social references. At the heart of this wonderful tale is an endearing story of true friendship that withstands all odds to not only emerge triumphant but also infuse others around them and even the cynics who watch the film to have a change of heart. This soaring tale of friendship also brings forth a profound social commentary told with subtle metaphorical actions, which resonate brilliantly with our own state of human affairs.
- DirectorFarren BlackburnStarsCharlie BewleyAlexandra DowlingClive StandenA young man transforms into a brutal warrior as he travels the unforgiving landscape in search of his long lost brother, Hakan the Ferocious, whose people are relying on him to restore order to their kingdom.Excellent Viking film. A few and strictly just a few representations might be historically, culturally, or factually inaccurate, but when a movie is this entertaining, all is forgiven. Pay a deaf ear to the naysayers and give it a shot. You'll be blown away by the pulsating action and the highly intense drama.

An out-an-out action-comedy with a rustic aura that keeps you wholesomely entertained from start to finish. Saif, Jimmy, & Vidyut are collectively rocking. The direction is snazzy, the plot is decent enough for this genre, the action is raw, the punches hit hard, the kicks look stylish, the bullets fly in all direction, the chase scenes are acrobatic, and the emphatic one-liners keep coming. Dhulia has made a pure guys film that is sure to enthrall fans of this genre, while also offering something in terms of an interesting narrative to neutral fans of action movies or the more loyal fans of the director's staple hard-hitting dramas. This time Dhulia decided on a slight detour from his conventional mold, and boy, did it pay rich dividends. "Bullett Raja" is a pure blast of machismo and unadulterated fun, along with immense repeat value.
- DirectorJay OlivaStarsJustin ChambersC. Thomas HowellMichael B. JordanThe Flash finds himself in a war torn alternate timeline and teams up with alternate versions of his fellow heroes to return home and restore the timeline.DC and Warner Bros. seem to make much better animated direct-to-home videos than they do full-length feature films (with the rare exception of the "Batman" films). Another grand entry in the legacy of DC home videos and a treat for all the DC superhero fans that is sure to resonate across diverse age groups. With the plot particularly emphasizing on "The Flash" as the central character of how the story unfolds, this one promises to be a special treat for fans of the red-suited speedster like me; who've only ever been treated once before (a riveting T.V. show back in 1990) to a worthy visual medium of the fastest man ever.
- DirectorIsaac FlorentineStarsScott AdkinsKane KosugiMika HijiiNinjitsu master Casey is back and out for revenge when his pregnant wife is murdered. After the cult status of the original "Ninja" that released in 2009, expectations were quite high for this sequel, and, oh boy, did it deliver. Frankly speaking, it's one of the best direct-to-video action movies ever. The action is cool, the stunts are riveting, the plot is thrilling, and the excitement never lets up. Issac Florentine proves yet again why he's one of the best action movie directors operating today and Scott Adkins further enhances his reputation as one of the most promising action moviestars of this generation.
- DirectorHaifaa Al-MansourStarsWaad MohammedReem AbdullahAbdullrahman Al GohaniAn enterprising Saudi girl signs on for her school's Koran recitation competition as a way to raise the remaining funds she needs in order to buy the green bicycle that has captured her interest.A beautiful, touching, and eye-popping story of a young girl's indomitable spirit, unflappable demeanor, and cognitive wisdom years beyond her credibility. The manner in which she goes about achieving her singularly focused goad in the face of unyielding oppressiveness from arguably the most despicable society in the world, is a true testament of the protagonist's character. A character that eventually melts your heart and completely wins you over.
- DirectorBen StillerStarsBen StillerKristen WiigJon DalyWhen both he and a colleague are about to lose their job, Walter takes action by embarking on an adventure more extraordinary than anything he ever imagined.A wholly endearing, heart-warming, and surreal world that is deftly crafted together by Ben Stiller. Stiller competently shoulders the entire film as the titular character and is well-supported by Shirley MacLaine (she certainly has'nt lost her touch, great to see her after eons), as also Sean Penn in a truncated appearance. If not for some needless plot holes, this would have easily being Stiller's masterclass and cemented his position as a Directors of high standards. Nevertheless, "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" is evidence enough to look forward to future offerings orchestrated by Ben Stiller.
- DirectorBaltasar KormákurStarsDenzel WashingtonMark WahlbergPaula PattonTwo hardened criminals get into trouble with the US border patrol after meeting with a Mexican drug lord, and then revelations start to unfold.Nowhere near Director, Baltasar Kormákur, last masterclass, "Contraband", but decent action and great one-liners still make for an awesome time at the movies. Largely supplemented by Wahlberg's and Washington's sublimely edgy camaraderie, Bill Paxton's hilariously deplorable turn at playing negative, and Paula Patton's oozing sex appeal. "2 Guns" would never be included in the pantheon of great action-comedies, but it's still a cut above most action-comedies.
- DirectorScott CooperStarsChristian BaleCasey AffleckZoe SaldanaWhen Rodney Baze mysteriously disappears and law enforcement doesn't follow through fast enough, his older brother Russell takes matters into his own hands to find justice.A solid crime drama with a solid performance from Christian Bale, who is well supported by Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck, William Dafoe, and Forest Whittaker.
- DirectorMikael HåfströmStarsSylvester StalloneArnold Schwarzenegger50 CentWhen a structural-security authority finds himself set up and incarcerated in the world's most secret and secure prison, he has to use his skills to escape with help from the inside.Sky, Arnie, and "Person of Interest's" John Reese (Jim Caviezel) all in the same movie. What more could an action fan ask for? There's enough of heart-pounding action and thrills, but they mostly occurring in the last half hour. The rest of the movie's executed with a detailed (albeit outlandish) plot, some smart direction, plus Sly and Arnie's macho charisma and staple one-liners, which are well complemented by Caviezel's fiendish act. "Escapes Plan" is almost a total blast and just falls short of being a dream come true for action fans all over.
- DirectorRaj ChakrabortyStarsArindol BagchiParan BanerjeeMimi ChakrabortyThe story revolves around a brave heart Barun Biswas, portrayed by Parambrata Chatterjee, who raised voice against numerous gang rapes in a village called Dukhiya. Dukhiya, where gang rapes had become a festival. These were celebrated by some political criminals. They didn't even spare children and aged females. Police would also not take up any complaints against these powerful criminals. Barun Biswas with his team forms a forum named 'Jagaran Mancha' and stands against all odds and forced the law to arrest the culprits. Eventually the accused men gets Barun Biswas murdered leaving the entire village in shock and pain. In the later half we see Binod Bihari Dutta, portrayed by Paran Bondhopadhyay (who was a colleague to Barun in a school in Kolkata), coming to Dukhiya in search of the truth behind Barun's murder. Binod comes to know about the goons (who are by now released on bail), and the way they have terrorized the village. Binod tried to motivate villagers the way Barun did but finds everyone reluctant in fear. A new police officer, Animesh Dutta was posted to the village, portrayed by Saswata Chatterjee. Binod felt helpless and thus decided to take the law in his own hands. Gradually Binod killed all the criminals one after another and Animesh on the other hand continued with his investigation of the serial murders. By the last murder Animesh gets hold of the hand behind all these killings and thus arrests Binod Bihari Dutta. What happens next....? Can Binod escape or is he punished? This is for the audience to find out.Gripping, raw, shocking, visceral, disturbing, emotional, gut-wrenching, and a thoroughly engrossing Bengali drama. Well-acted, superbly crafted, and creating a solid impact. The only minor niggle with this film is that it loses its plot towards the climax and steers into a routine and somewhat incomprehensible track, which slightly tarnishes what could have been a truly memorable film.
- DirectorJon TurteltaubStarsRobert De NiroMichael DouglasMorgan FreemanBilly, Paddy, Archie and Sam have been best friends since childhood. When Billy proposes to his much-younger girlfriend, they go to Vegas to relive their glory days. However, the decades have changed Sin City and tested their friendship.A darn funny film that pits four actors together who, although in their twilight years, still have the gall, spunk, charm, and sheer brazenness to pull off such and audacious, outrageous comedy. The film also has a strong underlying theme of the value of true friendship and the meaning of sticking by your real friends through thick and thin and even be willing to sacrifice important things for the sake of their happiness. It should resonate well with whoever holds their real friends close to their heart and understand what it takes to make a friendship last.
- DirectorWoody AllenStarsCate BlanchettAlec BaldwinPeter SarsgaardA New York socialite, deeply troubled and in denial, arrives in San Francisco to impose upon her sister. She looks like a million dollars but isn't bringing money, peace or love.May not be among Woody Allen's best, but it's still another fine film on complex human emotions and relations from the Director, with another fine performance from Cate Blanchett.
- DirectorShoojit SircarStarsNargis FakhriJohn AbrahamRaashi KhannaAn Indian intelligence agent journeys to a war-torn coastal island to break a resolute rebel group and meets a passionate journalist.Wow! Bollywood has suddenly awoken from decades of slumber. Another great political espionage film after "D-Day". While it might not be as gripping, suspenseful, or action-packed as the "D-Day" (to be fair, this was never meant to be an action film), it certainly scores plenty of points for its realistic depiction of one of the most ghastly periods of Sri Lankan history and India's relation and unfortunate outcome with that period. The film also needs praise for its accurate depiction of covert operations (again like "D-Day", this aspect is on par with the best spy films of international cinema), as also its brilliant technical achievements, especially the Cinematography and production design. Performance wise, John Abraham and Nargis Fakhri have certainly gone through the grind and come out as more than decent. Soojit Sircar has carved a gruelling and gut-wrenching tale from actual facts with "Madras Cafe", that shouldn't be missed by any Indian.
- DirectorRakeysh Omprakash MehraStarsFarhan AkhtarKousi OrfahliDeepak Singh RawatThe truth behind the ascension of Milkha Singh, who was scarred by of the India-Pakistan partition.Raw, passionate, intense, emotional, and inspirational; "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag" is quite a competent retelling of Milkha Singh's journey, which just falls short of being a completely rousing epic. Director Rakesh Omprakash Mehra does a fine job of putting us right into the protagonist's shoes and he literally makes us feel the trials, tribulations, metamorphosis, and triumphs of our hero. If only he did away with some unnecessary songs, tightened up the narrative a bit, trimmed some loose ends, and focused a bit more on certain important sporting accomplishments of the sprinter's career; the film could have been so much more memorable. The tone of this sports-drama could have also done with a more stirring background score. Alas, we have to make do with a film about one of India's greatest sporting icons, that almost delivers on its promise. Perhaps, the most significant feat of the movie is that we feel like running and celebrating along with Milkha Singh.
- DirectorNeill BlomkampStarsMatt DamonJodie FosterSharlto CopleyIn the year 2154, the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth. A man takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds. Is it as good as "District 9"? No. But it's still a gripping sci-fi effort from director Neill Blomkamp. Anyways, "District 9" was a masterpiece that's probably hard to replicate, and it's simply unfair to judge a Director's subsequent works to his best films. Comparison are inevitable and understandable, but a film should ultimately be judged on its own merits, and with that note, "Elysium is a thoroughly enjoyable futuristic vision, that's only gets derailed at certain remotely sporadic junctures, due to a degree of over indulgence in plot contrivances. The film is still worth the price of an admission ticket, because of its scope, taut narration, and Jodie Foster's deviously sinister act (seriously, the lady can effortlessly just breeze through any role). Matt Damon and Sharlto Copley are as reliable as ever.
- DirectorPrakash JhaStarsKareena KapoorAjay DevgnAmitabh BachchanA corporate go-getter sees his priorities shift when a personal tragedy brings him face-to-face with political corruption.Inspiring, relevant, emotional, and thought-provoking. Prakash Jha is back with a hard-hitting political drama and successfully manages to render a gripping narrative - a talent which we dreaded might have abandoned him, going by the loose narratives and slightly melodramatic efforts of his previous two efforts. It might be not in the league of Jha's memorable classics such as "Rajneeti", "Gangaajal", and "Mrityudand" (mostly due to the rushed and predictable climax), but it at least signals a return to form for one of India's preeminent filmmaking talents, which definitely augurs well for his future projects. The screenplay is further augmented by another stellar act from Mr. Bachchan (along with Irrfan Khan's act in "D-Day", it's certainly the performance of the year) and Manoj Bajpayee's fiendishly sarcastic take on the current politician. Kareena Kapoor lends competent support, while Arjun Rampal carries on his good form. The only letdown is Ajay Devgn, who's becoming increasingly monotonous and bland with his incessant brooding, perpetual scowls, unaltered mannerisms, unconvincing body-language, and forced dialogue delivery.
- DirectorAanand L. RaiStarsDhanushSonam KapoorMohd. Zeeshan AyyubKundan, the son of a Hindu pundit, discovers that his childhood sweetheart Zoya loves city-bred Akram and wants to marry him. However, he persistently seeks to win her heart.A romantic film that's tragic yet adorable in the same vein, without trying hard to be either of the two. Now you've got to love that. The film does have its flaws and the director makes some factual and continuity errors in his narrative. But all of this can be forgiven when a story of this intense simplicity comes along, which splatters a smile across your face from the get go; tugs at your heart strings for a major part, and finally wrenches your heart out towards the end. In actuality, the real contributors of "Raanjhanaa" are its beautiful script and Dhanush's effortlessly endearing portrayal. The National Award winning actor enacts his character as a quirky, innocent, dreamy, raw, and passionate simpleton all rolled into one in the most sublime manner. His effort certainly merits a nomination if not a win at most of the major award functions this year. This is one southern star to look forward to in Hindi cinema.
- DirectorJeff NicholsStarsMatthew McConaugheyTye SheridanJacob LoflandTwo young boys encounter a fugitive and form a pact to help him evade the vigilantes that are on his trail and to reunite him with his true love.An engrossing coming-of-age, romantic drama that is interlaced with subtle empathy and pathos. The film sheds more light on romance and the meaning of true love than most other movies that actually deal with love stories. Matthew McConaughey is enthralling as usual. Why this man gets so much flak for his acting is beyond my comprehension.

- DirectorRajkumar SantoshiStarsShahid KapoorIleana D'CruzPadmini KolhapureVishwas Rao is raised by his mother who wants him to become a police officer while he wants to become an actor.Partly funny, somewhat emotional, intermittent witty dialogues, a couple of peppy songs, and sporadically wonderful scenes. Therein lies the inherent problem of "Phata Poster Nikla Hero" - it might entertain you throughout, but it never comes together as a wholly cohesive unit. Though it is better than most other mediocre Bollywood films this year, it never comes close to scaling the heights of Mr. Santoshi's erstwhile laugh riots - "Andaz Apna Apna" and "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani". Lastly a word must be put in about Shahid Kapoor's, who surely surprises many with his performance. He's in full flow and in complete control of his act, displaying his entire range from comedy, to emotions, to conventional Bollywood hero. After ages, he successfully carries an entire film on his shoulders, albeit with some help from Padmini Kolhapure (great to see her talent on display after so long), Darshan Zariwala, Sanjay Mishra, and, Saurabh Shukla. Ileana D'cruz is a total let-down.
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsNicholas HoultStanley TucciEwan McGregorThe ancient war between humans and a race of giants is reignited when Jack, a young farmhand fighting for a kingdom and the love of a princess, opens a gateway between the two worlds. This movie is just pure fun and one helluva adventure ride. The classic fairy-tale might be misrepresented, but that doesn't take away from the entertainment this movie provides. It might not be aclassic fantasy film and it might be forgotten within a few months, but you do feel buoyant and satisfied once the credits start rolling. The highlights of "Jack The Giant Slayer" are its stunning cinematography, enchanting set designs, and captivating CGI effects (wherein the CGI is masterfully integrated into the narrative structure to take the plot forward and not overtly done like in scores of films nowadays).
- DirectorBaz LuhrmannStarsLeonardo DiCaprioCarey MulliganJoel EdgertonA writer and wall street trader, Nick Carraway, finds himself drawn to the past and lifestyle of his mysterious millionaire neighbor, Jay Gatsby, amid the riotous parties of the Jazz Age.Besides being visually enchanting like most Baz Luhrman films, this is also one of his few offerings that's aesthetically beautiful, dramatically satisfying, characteristically emphatic, and sufficiently entertaining, as it is visually brilliant. The ensemble cast effortlessly coagulates any chinks in the multi-layered narrative. Most importantly, the movie resonates with one simple but true message: "That nothing is too great or too small for love and if you really love, you should be willing to pay any price for it". Come awards season, expect this movie to snag all the nominations for its intoxicating cinematography.

The Direction is good though and all the actors leave an impact with their pitch-perfect performances.

They also cemented Victor Crawley as the latest entry into the list of legendary horror villains. The third film, while not as great, certainly has its moments and succeeds in taking the plot forward, and also neatly wraps up the chapter once and for all. Its not as tense, scary, or suspenseful as its predecessors, but it's sufficiently visceral, gory, and exciting enough to at least satiate the appetite of even the most demanding of horror movie fans.
- DirectorKannan IyerStarsEmraan HashmiKonkona Sen SharmaKalki KoechlinWhen gifted magician Bobo finds himself assailed by hallucinations and seeks professional help, he learns he's being haunted by a sinister spirit.Another winner from Emraan Hashmi. This man can currently do no wrong. While the film is not shockingly scary in the conventional way, it still packs enough of mystique, intrigue, suspense, to keep you glued till the end. Huma Qureshi, Konkana Sen Sharma, Pavan Malhotra, & Kalki Koechlin (in a bit role), are all credible in their respective roles. Just falls short of entering the dark realms of classic horror.

Absolutely not! Because the original was inane fun, so is the sequel, and both films parade themselves around unabashedly for what they are. "Grown Ups 2" is certainly not one of those comedies that you'll keep revisiting, but it's funny, silly, and genuinely humorous enough to pass up a breezy 90 minutes. Prudish critics will keep hating on Adam Sandler, so it's a good thing that there's others like us out there who accept his goofiness with a fleeting smile, and don't take him seriously.

Rajeev Khandelwal is intense as usual & Tena Desae displays promise but needs to work on her diction & voice modulation. Above all, its the old warhorse Paresh Rawal who steals the show with a zany, wicked, yet sensitive portrayal.
- DirectorWalter HillStarsSylvester StalloneJason MomoaChristian SlaterAfter watching their respective partners die, a New Orleans hitman and a Washington, D.C. detective form an alliance in order to bring down their common enemy.Decent Buddy-Action movie that holds your interest in spite of the flimsy plot, due to some good action scenes and witty one-liners. The master of buddy-action films, Walter Hill, pilots an enjoyable ride which, though not in the league of some of his earlier classics in the action genre, is still a fun outing for a one-time watch. With an ageing Sylvester Stallone still in top form and the film running at just 90 mins., 'Bullet to the Head' is entertaining enough for action movie enthusiasts & Stallone fans alike.
- DirectorGavin HoodStarsHarrison FordAsa ButterfieldHailee SteinfeldYoung Ender Wiggin is recruited by the International Military to lead the fight against the Formics, an insectoid alien race who had previously tried to invade Earth and had inflicted heavy losses on humankind. An entertaining sci-fi affair, which was somewhat loyal to the book in its plot, but was not as fleshed out in terms of the source material's characters, their relations, and their back-stories. That's why it's more apt to call it an entertaining affair, because like an affair it's only enjoyable till it lasts, but doesn't provide anything for the long haul as far as repeated viewings are concerned.

- DirectorNicolas Winding RefnStarsRyan GoslingKristin Scott ThomasVithaya PansringarmJulian, a drug-smuggler thriving in Bangkok's criminal underworld, sees his life get even more complicated when his mother compels him to find and kill whoever is responsible for his brother's recent death.Okay, it might not be another "Drive", but it isn't anywhere close to how most critics and the general audience are making it out to be. The pace is deliberately slow and the performances are understandably languid, in keeping with the somber tone and brooding atmosphere of the film. Ryan Gosling once again makes for a strong lead character and renders an arresting performance that is etched in subtlety and finer nuances. He is ably complemented by Kristin Scott Thomas who delivers a ballsy act as the dominating matriarch of the crime syndicate with an incessant need to control and manipulate everything and everyone she comes in contact with. Most people are being unduly harsh on this movie. Nicolas Winding Refn has not created another masterpiece, but he has certainly hemmed another surreal tale, which exemplifies the sordidness of crime and repressed malevolent desires.

The animation and VFX are top-notch, but the plot and characters needed more care and a deeper understanding from the makers. Reliance must invest more time and effort in the artistic and creative dynamics of their future projects if they want to be taken seriously as Hollywood producers.
- DirectorSanjay GuptaStarsAnil KapoorJohn AbrahamManoj BajpayeeBased on the true story of the first-ever registered encounter by the Mumbai Police, which took place on November 1, 1982.Decent crime flick that certainly exceeded my expectations at least. Though John Abraham & Tushaar Kapoor make for the least convincing gangsters in the annals of cinema, their insipid attempts at being tough and gritty are easily overshadowed by some hard-hitting acts from veterans like Anil Kapoor, Ronit Roy, Manoj Bajpayee, & Sonu Sood. The idrection is crisp, the dialogues are incredulously applaud-able, the cinematography is sleek, and the action scenes are well done.
- DirectorMrighdeep LambaStarsPulkit SamratManjot SinghAli FazalThe paths of four dream-chasing college friends cross with an array of colourful characters, from a tough-talking Punjabi female don to a Jugaad Baaz college watchman. Mayhem ensues. It aims to be another "Dil Chahta Hai" or a "Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara". The glitch is that it tries to rise beyond the limitations of its script with a bunch of actors who are likable and competent performers, but not brilliant artists and bonafide moviestars. Furthermore, the direction though effective, is not astute or shrewd enough to transform a light-hearted screenplay into a memorable film. Perhaps, if the makers had decided to churn the film within the limitations of the script and talent on offer, it might have been a more entertaining prospect. Sometimes, less too can be better.
- DirectorTigmanshu DhuliaStarsJimmy ShergillMahie GillIrrfan KhanSaheb, his wife, and a gangster who returns to take revenge. While not as enjoyable or sizzlingly provocative as its predecessor, its still intrigung enough to keep you engrossed and guesiing right till the end. Whenever the narrative gets dreary, Irfan's stupendous act & Dhulia's assured Direction lures you back into the proceedings.
- DirectorJohn MooreStarsBruce WillisJai CourtneySebastian KochJohn McClane travels to Russia to help out his seemingly wayward son, Jack, only to discover that Jack is a CIA operative working undercover, causing the father and son to team up against underworld forces.A fun action flick with the legendary Bruce Willis sharing some good chemistry with newbie Jai Courtney. It might pale in comparison with all its predecessors, but then again the 1st four films of this mighty great franchise were some of the most adrenaline pumping, classic action flicks ever. However, as a stand alone film, 'A Good Day to Die Hard' provides enough thrills, one-liners, and action to satiate your appetite. The chase scene at the beginning is the highlight of this movie.
- DirectorKamal HaasanStarsPooja KumarMiles AndersonKamal HaasanWhen a classical dancer's suspecting wife sets an investigator behind him, a series of violent events are triggered, revealing his real identity and connection to a darker world.Terrific performance from Kamal Hassan as always. Promising plot that could have been so much better. But in the end, it was at least way better than most South films.
- DirectorDavid DhawanStarsAli ZafarSiddharthDivyendu SharmaWhen pretty new neighbor Seema falls for their shy roommate Sid, jealous womanizers Omi and Jai plot to break up the new lovebirds.Even though its a remake, expectations are always decent with a David Dhawan film, and this is well worth the admission price. Abounding with silly humor and gags, this comedy trip holds its own as a remake. Just don't expect anything on the lines of Dhawan's previous classics like "Haseena Maan Jayegi", "Shola aur Shabnam", or "Coolie No. 1", and you won't be dissapointed.
