- DirectorVishal BhardwajStarsShahid KapoorTabuShraddha KapoorA young man returns to Kashmir after his father's disappearance to confront his uncle, whom he suspects of playing a role in his father's fate.Vishal Bhardwaj is one of our most renowned film makers, with this film he completes his trilogy of Shakespearean adaption. Vishal has proved his mettle with likes of Maqbool, The Blue Umbrella, Omkara and Kaminey. No doubt, Vishal has a robust hold over what he is doing. This one is an official adaptation of Hamlet set in the backdrops of Kashmir. Without Vishal's directorial finesse Haider couldn't have been the experience that it turned out to be now. Screenplay of the movie is pitch perfect without any loopholes. It couldn't have been better. The writers have transformed the idea on paper into a visually splendid movie with superlative script. The dialogues penned by Vishal strike the right chord. Cinematography is of astounding. The DoP depicts Kashmir in an exquisite way. Shahid Kapoor, without doubt the most underrated actors of our industry, as the lead protagonist depicts the role with aplomb. It is his career's best performance! Tabu gives yet another scintillating performance. Shraddha Kapoor looks ethereal and carries off a very difficult role on her shoulders very well. Kay Kay Menon appears in a different shade and steals the show every now and then with his acting skills. Irrfan Khan, though in a special appearance is perfect. On the whole, Haider is a 2 Hr 45 Min long engaging drama. Vishal doesn't let you get bored because of his fine writing skills. This one is for the cinema lovers & can easily be termed as the best film of 2014!!
- DirectorVikas BahlStarsKangana RanautRajkummar RaoLisa HaydonA Delhi girl from a traditional family sets out on a solo honeymoon after her marriage gets cancelled.Queen is a gem of a film!!Kangana Ranaut delivers a performance that marks her light years ahead of any of her contemporaries. She conveys most through her pitch-perfect body language. And even in her dialogues she gets the right tonality for it all. 'Queen' might be the birth of a legend and thank God for that! Rajkumar Rao & a variety of co stars provide great support to her. 'Queen' is easily one of the most accomplished films made in a long time. The skillful direction of Vikas and Kangana's easy virtuoso makes this one an indulgent affair.
- DirectorRajkumar HiraniStarsAamir KhanAnushka SharmaSanjay DuttAn alien on Earth loses the only device he can use to communicate with his spaceship. His innocent nature and child-like questions force the country to evaluate the impact of religious views on people. This team - director Raj Kumar Hirani & producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra have different sensibilities, they look at cinema in a different angle be it the Munna Bhai series or 3 Idiots (2009) or the very under rated Ferrari Ki Sawaari (2012). Their depiction of serious subjects filled with light hearted humor & emotions have been a delight to watch. Just like before, this film aims at another seriously debatable issue of our country - Religions & the men behind it. Yes, it does has some similarities with the previously released OMG : Oh My God (2012), Raju Hirani adds more layers to the script & manages to keep it fresh. The story follows an Alien aka P.K (Aamir Khan) who lands on earth to study human beings and their lifestyle, but loses the "remote control" to his spaceship. Unknown to the language & the people, PK has a tough time, eventually finding a good friend in the form of Bhairav Singh (Sanjay dutt). In search of his remote control, PK reaches Delhi where he ends up meeting an aspiring journalist Jagat Janani (Anushka Sharma), who has recently returned from Prague after a failed relationship with Sarfaraz (Sushant Singh Rajput). What happens next forms the rest of the story. The basic crux of the plot is quite entertaining and has an interesting take on the debatable beliefs of our society that have been existing since centuries, all being blended well with some satire, good humor and enough emotion. Raju Hirani has come up with a unusual storyline and while the presentation was rich, the narrative was quite absorbing. The dialogues were well written. The script was above average and the screenplay made it lot better. The film communicates a nice message of Unity in our society, that is filled with superstitious traditions, deceptive & discriminated with orthodox beliefs that divide all human being in the name of religion be it Christians, Sikhs, Hindus, Buddhists or Muslims etc. The inevitable consequence of orthodox beliefs & discrimination in the name of religion leads to misconception about people. All religions are divinely inspired, but they are imperfect because they are products of the human mind and taught by human beings based on their own moral ethics as every religious man believes his belief is perfect! Hirani's Direction is simple, yet effective. Dialogues by director and writer duo are perfect, hilarious and logical. The lead's whole journey will leave you in splits. His voice against the God-Men, are clap-worthy, while his intended romance with a human girl, is cute. What's truly funny, is that, P.K, an alien, looks far more sorted & normal in comparison to the human characters. And that's Hirani's genius! He delivers a story about our fears & flaws & he executes it, remarkably well. Music by Various Artists is tuneful. Visual Effects are decent. This film could have been what is if not for Aamir Khan! He delivers a moving, heartfelt performance, that touches the core of your heart. He carries the film on his board shoulders & steals the show. From his physique to his language, the actor is simply brilliant. Indulging himself in a role of an innocent outsider, he speaks more with his expressions than any of the actors do with their words. Anushka Sharma was competent and does her best. She plays an adequately important role in doing her best to join the humor & highlighting the drama. Also, Her on-screen chemistry with Aamir, is adorable. Sanjay Dutt was amazing in a small but effective role. Sushant Singh Rajput, also, shines in a brief role. Saurabh Shukla is incredible as the God-Man. His scenes with Aamir, are captivating. Boman Irani is awesome, as always! Director Rajkumar Hirani yet again proves that he is supremely talented filmmaker & indeed a genius! On the whole PK is a movie which manages to entertain you thoroughly with its humor & thought process. PK is out to provoke but not to shock. The film asks questions which we may I have thought about, but could never voice them. PK is an adventure which will make you laugh heartily, & send you down an emotional roller coaster. If you have people with orthodox thinking in your proximity or people who are led to blind beliefs of religious drama or are puritanical, PK is just the movie for them. Raju Hirani has given us a perfect good bye to the year 2014.
- DirectorImtiaz AliStarsAlia BhattRandeep HoodaDurgesh KumarRight before her wedding, a young woman finds herself abducted and held for ransom. As the initial days pass, she begins to develop a strange bond with her kidnapper.Highway may just be the perfect Bollywood road movie! Its quiet & thoughtful tone makes this Imtiaz Ali's best directorial effort yet! Beautiful visuals, Beautiful tunes and Beautiful moments with a tinge of Art house cinema, makes this film more of a "hatke" experience. Alia Bhatt emerges out as the real winner as she gives a terrific performance establishing her as one of the finest in the new lot of actors. Randeep Hooda (I'm a huge fan!) hold his own with his brooding expressions & mostly subtle performance. Highway is a life time experience for people looking for meaningful cinema & don't mind a slow paced film, rest others, stay away!
- DirectorKrishna D.K.Raj NidimoruStarsSaif Ali KhanIleana D'CruzKalki KoechlinA confused writer goes on the search of inspiration for his next story and falls in love with a best seller author who doesn't believe in love.I had actually begun to think romantic comedies cannot be made differently in Bollywood! And I am also right but they can still be made pretty darn good. With the still in coming pour of masala movies heading your way since a couple of years, this urbane cool rom com which goes as far as parodying itself comes a breath of fresh air! The plot is nothing unusual & yes it does pick a piece or two from Showtime's hit TV series Cali fornication, its the predictability of things which the most fun part of this venture. Shot in San Francisco and Los Angeles, the three cinematographers Chase Bowman, Yaron Levy & Mahesh Limaye have made sure the film is very good-looking. The plot is simple - Yudi lives in LA, an erstwhile bestselling writer who has gone broke and lost his car due to failing his installment payments! Amidst all the confusion, he bumps into Aanchal Reddy – a writer who has replaced him at his publication, writes romantic novels for a living and doesn’t believe in love, while instead pokes fun at her own readers. While his only chance to get back some of his fame (& money) is to write a Hollywood meets Bollywood kind of script for a sleazy single screen hero Armaan, who wants to make it big at the multiplex as well! The hilarity starts from the opening scene itself, as Yudi & his girl friend (real life wife Kareena Kapoor Khan) watching ‘Love Aaj Kal’. She tells him she loves him, he says erm cool. She says I know you have depth. And he says no, I think this is all I have. Breakup Hilarious! !The best bits in the film are between Yudi and Yogi, a fat snobby quirky but philosophically always correct alter ego! Directors Raj and D.K have already shown us they are here to try something new (Go Goa Gone) and thank God for that. & they are not afraid to portray that feeling A scene where Govina’s assistant pokes fun at the huge downpour of South Indian film remakes, it just sounded so true! Their vocabulary is fresh, their writing might not be novel but at least they were ballsy enough to attempt a decent spoof on romances. Yes, the film dips in pacing at times in the second half, but looking at the wider picture, those scenes were actually integral to the whole storyline. Among the performances, Saif Ali Khan plays himself & is back in his comfort zone, playing commitment phobic has been his thing in a lot of films and it’s his usual deadpan humor that gets you. I loved Yogi more than Yudi. To be able to deliver such distinct performances, in the same frame needs a sound sense of comic timing and Saif surpasses his best. RIP Humshakals. Ileana Dcruz gives another effortless performance. She too is clearly playing herself but does so with a lot of believable earnestness, you just cant help but fall in love with her! Kalki Koechlin despite her small role is great. She gets her antics in to make you laugh and you do find the psycho stalker endearing! Ranvir Shorey has a knack for comedy which is a known fact, & here he gets to prove how outstanding he is! His frustrating life situations will get you laughing. His dominating wife, her oops pregnancy and her monotone under wears are the primary problems of his life. Preity Zinta in an extended cameo as always is sparkling & loveable. And above all Govinda is in his words, is just ‘kickass’. Slipping into the kind of loud humor he has always been known for! His character of a sleazy single star, who thinks too highly off himself is a delight to watch!! The directors have made sure the sequences between his character & Saif’s character, become downright laughable & memorable. The editing was crisp and a special mention to Sachin Jigar, there is enough good music to keep you glued. Overall Happy Ending is a well paced, urban, cool & a hilarious rom com, & the the credit goes to Raj and D.K along with Saif who pack together so many right ingredients that you can’t help but invest in the film. An excellent weekend watch! Once the film has "Ended" you are sure to come out "Happy" (did you see what I just did, no?).
- DirectorAnurag KashyapStarsRahul BhatRonit RoyTejaswini KolhapureThe case of a missing girl takes us through a journey of human greed and brushes upon the egos and repressed emotions of the characters.Anurag Kashyap is one of the most intriguing directors of Bollywood who always dares to do something different, whether its gangster flick Gangs of Wasseypur or his retelling of classic tale Dev D (2009) or the disturbing Black Friday (2004) or the almost non nonsensical noir thriller No Smoking (2007) or the political drama Gulaal(2009), he has always a new dimension with brand stamp of dark themes & black comedy. And just like his earlier films this one just like its title suggests the gets into an ugly territory. The story based on true events follows Shalini (Tejaswini Kolhapure) is a middle-class housewife forced to stay at home by her second husband, police-chief Bose Shoumik (Ronit Roy). She considers suicide, and is about to shoot herself in the head with her husband’s gun when she is interrupted by her daughter, Kali (Anishika Shrivastava). Unaware of her mother’s activities moments earlier, Kali asks her mother to call her estranged father, Shalini’s ex-husband, Rahul (Rahul Bhatt). It’s a Saturday, and Kali’s day with her father as decided in the custody agreement from the divorce. Rahul, an aspiring actor struggling to make it big, comes to take her for a drive but ignores her in favor of phone calls made to try to further his career. Finally, Rahul leaves Kali alone in the car to go to an audition and to check in with his agent, Chaitanya (Vineet Kumar Singh). When he returns to the car, Kali is missing. Rahul first searches for Kali through the police, Chaitanya in tow. The local police-captain, Jadhav (Girish Kulkarni), does not take Rahul seriously until he realizes that Kali is the stepdaughter of the police-chief. Bose, out of hatred for Rahul, orders Jadhav to accuse Rahul of the kidnapping and to torture both Rahul and Chaitanya to interrogate and punish them. A game of ego boosting follows as Rahul and Bose search for Kali while simultaneously attempting to upstage the other. We also have a producer's wife - actress Rakhi Malhotra (Surveen Chawla), who is best friends with Shalini & lover to Rahul & Shalini's brother (Siddhanth Kapoor), who is way into debts, have their own take on the events. From the beginning itself your mind is not allowed to rest. The film raises so many questions as the movie progresses which get cleared up slowly. The best parts of the films are the wacky moments, a signature in Kashyap's films - instead of launching a manhunt for the girl, the captain absurdly chats about mobile phones, selfies, divorces, Rahul's film career etc, while the distraught Rahul caves and Chaitanya attempts to lean him into action, once the inspector realizes the missing girl is the stepdaughter of police honcho Bose, and his attitude switches to that of a professional. Almost each and every major character in the film uses the abduction incident to earn a few and that is the best element Kashyap conveys in the film. The climax marks the grave reality we live in, not caring for things that should be actually cared for. This film would not have worked without the brilliant cast of Ronit Roy, Rahul Bhat, Tejaswini Kolhapure, Vineet Kumar Singh, Surveen Chawla, Siddhanth Kapoor & Girish Kulkarni. Anurag Kashyap has never stopped intriguing me, making films that are not only bold and beautiful but also strong in themes and fables. With this film, which he promised to be his most honest work, he succeeds in making a point the same haughty way, but ends up saying nothing more than we already know. When the movie ends, you just know what "Ugly" stands for. Its not just another missing-child movie like Prisoners, but a raw chronicle of human behavior. On the whole Ugly is a not a film which can be seen with a vast audience, due to its "ugliness", nevertheless the good humor, intensity, superb performances & great direction makes this one of the best films out there!
- DirectorHomi AdajaniaStarsDeepika PadukoneArjun KapoorNaseeruddin ShahA man embarks on a road trip to find his lost love.Finding Fanny is not a regular Bollywood film, it's for a very niche audience. The film comes across like a breath of fresh air amidst the flood of racy commercial entertainers but then, it is also a subject that will appeal only to the thinking audience who seek intelligent entertainment . The first half goes on a lighter note with elements of comedy, some romance and also some bold scenes. The interval bang was good and the second half again has comic moments, but this where the films soul lies, that humans die love does not. All actors have done a fabulous job. My favourite of the five is Pankaj Kapoor, who didn't even had a necessary role as per screenplay, is just outstanding! Naseerudin Shah is very lovable and funny. Deepika is also good but she shines in narrating the story. Arjun Kapoor is revelation. He should try more roles like this. And finally, Dimple Kapadia. She should be applauded for accepting such kinda role that not everyone can play and she is fantastic. This is one of those films which is about journeys, self-discovery, life and more. Easily on of the best Bollywood film of 2014(after Queen). Watch it for its delicious characters.
- DirectorAbhishek VarmanStarsArjun KapoorAlia BhattAmrita SinghThis movie chronicles how Chetan met his wife and the difficulties they faced due to their cultural differences.A cross cultural rom-com which portrays the love to marriage journey of a Punjabi boy & a Tamilian girl. The prime focus is on the acceptance of cross cultural marriage. The movie is a picturesque of the semi autobiographical novel by Chetan Bhagat. Well the movie is very predictable & I really think the extensive length could have been cut down a bit. Nevertheless the sizzling chemistry & charming performances by Arjun Kapoor, Alia Bhatt & the supporting cast keep the proceedings interesting. The music is alright with an exception of a song or two. If you are looking for a universal melodrama, coupled with mild humor & romance, 2 States is the staple movie to go for this weekend!
- DirectorVijay RaazKaran AroraStarsVijay RaazManu Rishi ChadhaRaj ZutshiIn 1948, a cross-fire erupts at an isolated stretch of Indo-Pak border, leaving only two soldiers alive. One is an Indian soldier of Pakistani origin while the other happens to be a Pakistani soldier of Indian origin. An ironic story of pride and survival begins when - in an attempt to evade danger, they bump into each other. And amidst continuous exchange of bullets, altercations and murkier situations, it evolves into a journey of human connection with an unforeseeable end.Sometimes in a decade someone attempts to make a sensible film and this film is exactly that! With just 4 characters shot in just one location!! The movie is an eye opener for those who sees 1947 Indo-Pak separation story with guilt & consider it unlawful. The movie talks about the injustice endured on both the countries due to power hungry politicians and diplomats. The story begins with hilarious conversations and altercations between Manu Rishi & Vijay Raaz. While the second half focuses more on the hatred people of both country have, while some scenes may seem prolonged, they were deliberately included to execute the end. The dialogues are very well-written by Manu Rishi who also played a role of Indian military cook. Seasoned comedian Vijay Raaz has made a name for himself in movies for his comic timing, even though he plays a character much like himself, its his execution as a director which wins him bonus points! Kya Dilli Kya Lahore is a movie that assures a dose of entertainment & raises questions along with doubts for people of Pakistan & India: why are we still fighting this war for past 67 years, when we all are basically the same people in matters of culture, language & food….
- DirectorNitin KakkarStarsSharib HashmiInaamulhaqKumud MishraIn Mumbai, affable Bollywood buff and wanna-be-actor Sunny, who works as an assistant director, fantasizes on becoming a heart-throb star. However, at every audition he is summarily thrown out. Undeterred, he goes with an American crew to remote areas in Rajasthan to work on a documentary. One day an Islamic terrorist group kidnaps him for the American crew-member. Sunny finds himself on enemy border amidst guns and pathani-clad guards, who decide to keep him hostage until they locate their original target. The house In which he is confined belongs to a Pakistani, whose trade stems from pirated Hindi films, which he brings back every time he crosses the border. Soon, the two factions realize that they share a human and cultural bond. The film shows how cinema can be the universal panacea for co-existence.#Filmistaan is a heartwarming story of how films bind two warring nations India & Pakistan. It has some funny as well as heartwarming moments which explore the sentiments of the people of both the nations very well. The Story and Screenplay written by Nitin Kakkar & Dialogues by Sharib Hashmi form the strongest parts of this amazing film. Performances wise; its a delight to watch Sharib Hashmi & Inaamulhaq bromance chemistry, superb performances from both actors. In supporting roles Kumud Mishra & Gopal Dutt are brilliant. Director Nitin Kakkar does a commendable job without being preachy as to how both nations India and Pakistan have so much in common and especially the Bollywood & Cricket connection. For a movie buff like me it was delight to watch "Filmistaan". Recommended!!!
- DirectorPradeep SarkarStarsRani MukerjiJisshu SenguptaAnant VidhaatA female cop Shivani Shivaji Roy, working at a Mumbai Crime Branch, who sets out to confront the mastermind behind a child trafficking mafia.Rani Mukerji is back with a bang after a small hiatus as a hard hitting cop who at times is much more bad ass than Ajay Devgn's Singham & Salman Khan's Chulbul Pandey. Mardaani is a movie that despite an unimaginative plot based on true incidents and predictable narrative engrosses you in its fabric. After Pradeep Sarkar's dual debacles(Laaga Chunari Mein Daag and Lafangey Parindey), with "Mardaani" he manages to strike the bull's-eye this time. With a crisp, fast-paced and to-the-point screenplay, the movie keeps you glued for the entire two hours. Though dramatic and filled with intense emotions, the sequences of the film are quite within the realistic domain however the climax felt a bit rushed & a bit too much of a cliche, well its Bollywood what to do you except! Rani Mukerji with no make up, stern face maintains her strong demeanor. Tahir Raj Bhasin as the antagonist is an evil genius, looking forward to seeing him in more movies! I salute and applaud the team's effort to raise awareness of such a gruesome issue which preys over 40,000 innocent children of our country every year. Mardaani is indeed a worth a watch!
- DirectorAli Abbas ZafarStarsRanveer SinghArjun KapoorPriyanka Chopra JonasThe lives of Calcutta's most powerful Gunday, Bikram and Bala, changes when Nandita enters it. Then a counter-force takes charge and a thriller unfolds.Gunday is exactly what formula films are all about! Loads of action, music, dances, romance & "bro"mance makes this Gangster epic one of the most predictable yet highly entertaining films to come in recent years. YRF production has made this film on a large scale with different set pieces & a lot of explosions. Among the exceptional performances from the lead, with no doubts my favorite was Arjun Kapoor, the lad is becoming the patent gangster slowly, as the short tempered but lovable to a crazed maniac he is just brilliant!!followed by the always lovable Irrfan Khan who with his undeniable charm & personality conquers every scene he is present in. Ranvir Singh is a huge star in the making, no doubts on that & does well as the gangster with the brain part, but unfortunately gets overshadowed by his co stars in many sequences. While Priyanka looks incredibly sexy & manages to hold her own ground in this all boys film. Ali Abbas Zafar has made an ambitious film & it has been clear from his 1st film (Mere Brother Ki Dulhan), his films are solely meant to be mass entertainers. Looking forward to more sir!!
- DirectorRohit ShettyStarsAjay DevgnKareena KapoorAmole GupteOwing to the wrongdoings affiliated with evils similar to black money, an honest but ferocious police officer returns as the Deputy Commissioner of Police with the prospect of wiping out injustice. Many movies based on the similar them of a good cop vs evil politicians have been made, but Singham (2011) will always be one of a kind just for the sheer amount of entertainment it provided with all the high octane action & drama. This time around Rohit Shetty has made sure the sequel is bigger & better in every way possible! Rohit Shetty as we all know is the master of masala film-making. The screenplay & the dialogues are absorbing & charming while the action moments are incomplete without the blasting of cars which is formula in every movie that he has delivered. Ajay is in top form yet again! The intensity that he delivers truly proves that he is a star performer! Kareena Kapoor Khan has a really loud character but its made sure she comes out as adorable. This time around its Amole Gupte (Kaminey) & Zakir Hussain who play the the antagonist & they are a delight to watch! On the whole, SINGHAM RETURNS is a hi-octane thriller with jaw- dropping actions, powerhouse dialouges and smashing performances especially by Ajay Devgan who is the soul of the film! And it has the trademark of one and only Rohit Shetty who has given us an entertaining masala film once again!
- DirectorFarah KhanStarsShah Rukh KhanDeepika PadukoneAbhishek BachchanA gang of amateur dancers takes part in a dancing competition to avenge their personal vendetta.Farah Khan, the choreographer turned director is back with her 4th outing & like before she raises the entertainment quotient with a larger than life film, low on logic, and high on opulence, her movies flourish on song and dance, and rides purely on Shah Rukh Khan's shoulders, or might we add abs! along with really likeable supporting characters! Here, she has attempted to gel one of the coolest heists to be seen in Bollywood along with a dance competition, as ridiculous as it may sound, the events transpiring do manage to keep you gelled to the seat. This attempt could have easily fallen into the same trap trading purely on the stars' names rather than an intrinsic entertainment value, which seems to be the case for a certain Khan for the past few years. However it manages to take what worked from the original Hollywood films Oceans Eleven and Italian Job and give it a great desi touch of emotions & revenge at its best. The film manages to unfolds in an entertaining manner, from the comic set up introducing every character to the final show down, Farah has made sure we don't endure any dull moments as find out the details of the job bit by bit. While the 1st half is a bit shaky sticking to the usual cliche route while pooling in a bunch of cameos, its the 2nd half of the film, where the action shifts to Dubai, the film speedily picks up riding towards an epic climax! Shah Rukh Khan as always, is fantastic in the lead - his strength is that he has great charisma which means he doesn't have to ham it up. Instead he does his stuff but allows others to try and shine while he is comfortable with a constant warm glow & unlike before he is presented more of an action hero, who can also dance & romance. Deepika Padukone has never looked so gorgeous before! Its hard to turn your eyes away from her! This is one rare actress (of Bollywood) who excels in every department & role she performs. Boman Irani & Sonu Sood are hilarious & a delight to watch! Vivaan Shah gets the short end of the straw, but manages to salvage with whatever he can!Nice! Jackie Shroff pulls of the villain act with class & style, you just love to hate him! While not the leas, but probably one of the most underrated actors of our generation, its Abhishek Bachchan who steals the show in a double role! Whether its the drunken buffoon or the suave bachelor, he is hilarious & pulls every stop to make sure this is his best comic act yet! The music by Vishal-Shekhar is also good! This is a film that will keep you fascinated the entire time you are watching. It does not stick to the conventional values of the genre that we have come to expect. The twists and turns guarantee that by the end you will be sitting there thinking 'that was really clever' or vice versa, while the comic elements will keep you divided; You will, like me, laugh throughout the movie – whether at, or with them! On the whole, Happy New Year is a mindless larger than life masala entertainer, with a star studded cast, an excellent second half, filled with ooze of patriotism & fun, & clearly aimed to entertain the family audience!
- DirectorNitesh TiwariStarsAmitabh BachchanBoman IraniParth BhaleraoA ghost returns back from his world to prove something. But on earth, he has something more to do for his country.Amitabh Bachchan yet again proves why is the living legend of Bollywood!! Since the election season is on, this is possibly the best movie to be seen! The film portrays a good social message along with the right ingredients of a commercial film (especially the humor) in order to reach a winder audience. The proceedings kinda start faltering in the 2nd half as many sequences seem repeated. Child artist Parth Bhalerao is brilliant & matched toe to toe with AB Sr in every frame. Boman Irani is simply incredible as the screwed & conniving politician. In Cameos, Shahrukh Khan & Ranbir Kapoor are perfect. And a special mention to the good soundtrack! Overall Bhoothnath Returns is An Entertaining & Superbly Acted Sequel which is worth a watch!
- DirectorOmung KumarStarsPriyanka Chopra JonasSunil ThapaRobin DasA chronicle of the life of Indian boxer Mary Kom, who went through several hardships before audaciously accomplishing her ultimate dream. Many times when you watch a movie especially a biopic which has an inspiring story you may overlook the flaws and technicalities, & end up loving it ex Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, but thats not the case with "Mary Kom". Debutant Director Omung Kumar brings life the story of Boxing Champion "Mary Kom". The story & screenplay of Saiwyn Qadras charts the journey of a daughter of a simple farmer Mangte Chungneijang from Manipur to becoming the 5 times World Champion MC Mary Kom or Magnificent Mary as she is called. Somewhere along the line the film loses it balance between real incidents & fiction, hence losing the grip in the second hour. Performances wise its only and only Priyanka Chopra. She is totally into the character and this is by far her career best performance.Supporting cast like Darshan Kumar & Sunil Thapa are great. Omang Kumar's direction is decent but it could have been better looking to the hold of the script. Music goes with the flow, cinematography is top-notch. Mary Kom may not give you a patriotic feel like last years BGM & has its share of flaws but still it stands strong just because of Priyanka Chopra's superb performance & therefore becoming one of the better sports films to come from Bollywood!
- DirectorAbhishek ChaubeyStarsHuma QureshiNaseeruddin ShahMadhuri DixitTwo lousy crooks find paradise in the seven stages of love.Dedh Ishqiya is a complete film filled with a great script, taunt execution and tantalizing performances from cast derived of master performers! The chemistry between the actors, Naseerudin Shah and Arshad is fantastic. Not enough could be said about Madhuri who makes a sizzling come-back. Huma is good as well. Comparing to the 1st this film is more complicated (mainly due to the extreme urdu dialogues) & hilarious but less darker. If you are looking for comedy, thriller or even romance, this film is for you
- DirectorA.R. MurugadossStarsAkshay KumarSonakshi SinhaFreddy DaruwalaA military officer attempts to hunt down a terrorist, destroy a terrorist gang and deactivate the sleeper cells under its command.Having seen the awesome action thriller Thuppakki (Tamil 2012), I had quite low expectations from this remake even though it stars the action king Akshay Kumar. I must say this film is just awesome!! A.R. Murugadoss (Ghajini) maintains a perfect balance between the comedy, drama & thriller in a whole a perfect combo! Akshay Kumar is awesome in every angle whether its action (duh!), humor & drama sequences. He brings in something new which was missing in the Tamil version (No offense Tamil movie goers), a certain amount of charge & clearly looks the part. Sonakhi Sinha does what she is clearly enjoying for sometime now, singing & dancing. Freddy Daruwala has debuted as main villain but he has flat expressions throughout the film, he is not where close to Vidyut Jamwal's killer portrayal in the original. A big surprise is Govinda, who appears in four scenes & does what he is great at! Tickle your funny bone. People who have seen the Tamil version may be a bit disappointed as the film is a clear frame to frame remake of the original. Nevertheless if you are in mood to have a good time at the movies & wanna know why Akshay Kumar is a superstar, this film is one of the best ways to spend your Holiday!
- DirectorDavid DhawanStarsVarun DhawanIleana D'CruzNargis FakhriSeenu and Sunaina fall in love with each other when he saves her from a corrupt policeman who wishes to marry her. Meanwhile, Ayesha, a girl Seenu meets on a train journey, wants to marry him.Looking for mindless entertainer? this one is for you! The film reminds you of 90s era when Govinda-David Dhawan team used to entertain with some of the most insane plots & comic filled moments! Good times!! Varun Dhawan is a natural, which he had proved in his debut SOTY clearly overshadowing his co-stars in every way possible. This film reminds completely on his shoulders & behold we have our very Govinda now! He dances, romances, fights & makes us laugh hard! Illena D Cruz provides ample support to Varun as the leading lady. Anuroday Singh starts off as freaky psycho antagonist but as a really hilarious role in the 2nd half. Among the supporting Nargis Fakri, Rajpal Yadav, Anupam Kher & Saurabh Shukla are great. Dont look for logic here, it has a dumb plot! but it is a complete leave your brains at home entertainer you could enjoy with your family!
- DirectorShashank KhaitanStarsVarun DhawanAlia BhattAshutosh RanaA girl from Ambala, Kavya Pratap Singh, is about to be married. When she visits Delhi to shop for her 'dhai lakh ka Ghagra, she meets Humpty Sharma, a carefree Delhiite, and falls in love with him.Frankly, this film has no original plot, as it clearly plays an odd to the ever loveable DDLJ. KJo attempts to re-create the same magic with oodles of romance, comedy, hummable songs & a very likeable cast!! Alia Bhatt is slowly rising to become the number uno!! Her choice of diverse roles is surely bringing her status higher and higher! After Highway (2014), and 2 States (2014), she gives a superb performance in this one too!!! Varun Dhawan has completely evolved as an actor and he has won the status of a performer this time!! He pulls off the comic and emotional situations efficiently which is no cakewalk! The lead pair get strong support from other cast members too; Sahil Vaid & Jimmy Varyani as Varun's friends manage to steal the scene on several occasions. & Kudos to Ashutosh Rana whose role is very similar to that of Amrish Puri (In DDLJ) & shares the same onscreen chemistry (as SRK). On a stand-alone basis, Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania is an enjoyable film ,laugh at the jokes and yes, believe in the power of love!! Right...
- DirectorShashanka GhoshStarsSonam KapoorFawad KhanRatna Pathak ShahA hopelessly romantic physiotherapist meets a handsome young Rajput prince who is the complete opposite of her and engaged to someone else.Disney has been churning out the "princess" kind of movies for years targeting teenage girls & the younger ones around the globe. Well this time they are targeting India!! A remake of a 1980 film, this Disney-Anil Kapoor production is actually not bad. Well given the synopsis of the film, it has its cheesy & over the top moments, but it sure does make you smile with its antics. The movie has some interesting moments in the 1st half & drags down a bit in the 2nd half kinda playing the spoil sport. Among the performances, Sonam Kapoor is required to play an over the top character & she does that naturally. Debutant Fawad Khan seems to have been born for this role. From his mannerisms to his wardrobes, he pulls of the royal heir excellently. Kiron Kher as the punjabi mother (again) is a riot! The grand portrayal , the photography and hummable soundtrack along with some excellent performances makes Khoobsurat a pleasant journey in other words this romantic comedy is the perfect date movie of 2014.
- DirectorSiddharth AnandStarsHrithik RoshanKatrina KaifPawan MalhotraA young bank receptionist gets mixed up with Rajveer Nanda, a man who has a mysterious background.Siddharth Anand (Salaam Namaste, Tara Rum Pum, Bachna hai Haseeno, Anjaana Anjaani) gets out of his comfort zone & delivers what he has promised with the exciting promos! This "official" remake of Knight & Day (2010), is bigger in every way possible; by showcasing some of the best action sequences & having a deeper more character driven plot. If you can let go of the logic, the action choreography in this movie is beyond anything I've seen in Hindi cinema so far. The movie also looks incredible visually. Each frame is picturesque & kudos to The VFX & sound department for a stupendous job, with your eyes being tricked & ears going crazyl! Hrithik pulls of every action sequence with finesse and with his moving expression he engages us. On the other hand, his gentle and at some time his rib-tickling attitude towards Katrina is phenomenal & of course he shows off his abs to please the females. Katrina as an innocent and troubled lady is great & man she looks incredible in some sequences. Her fear and hesitation is amusingly wonderful. Danny Denzongpa has a small but powerful role. The music is average. The core problem in the film lies in the lazy writing, as 85% of the scenes & dialogues have been blandly copied! Like seriously! Plus the run time of 2 hr 45 minutes doesn't help. This film has been made successfully to enthrall masala entertainment to the audience, while people who have seen Knight & Day may be a bit disappointed, but considering the effort; Bang Bang justifies the humongous buzz created & may actually be the best Bollywood remake yet! Go for it as Hrithik and Katrina are in there to amuse you throughout. Worth A Watch!
- DirectorSabbir KhanStarsTiger ShroffKriti SanonParthaa AkerkarTwo young people find love despite the violent landscape in which they live.Heropanti is a routine good vs evil flick minus any hints of storyline and poor direction which mostly at times looks like a poor rip off from a Prabhu Deva film. But what works are the commendable performances from the lead debutantes & its supporting casting along with some well-choreographed action sequences & soulful music.Tiger Shroff is a star no doubts & kudos to him for executing the awesome action scenes without any cables or body doubles. The hard-work clearly pays off and it is pleasure to watch the deadly stunts. The actor delivers witty one-liners with a serious tone of his voice. He should probably work on his looks to have conventional hero attitude. Kirti Sanon shows ample promises and should go a long way. Prakash Raj plays the same character he has been playing on the Hindi celluloid but this time he has a gullible heart for a change. This film is clearly made aimed at the masses, the witty one liners, the comic sequences & the foot tapping music. Overall , if you have been a fan of Jackie Shroff (I personally adore the dude) or if you are longing for some great action moves & probably nothing to do, Heropanti is a one-time watch!
- DirectorKunal DeshmukhStarsEmraan HashmiHumaima MalikParesh RawalA small-time con man seeks assistance from his mentor with the intention of settling scores with a gangster. This con film actually starts on a very shaky note, with about 3 songs placed right in the 1st twenty minutes, it takes a particular event to turn the pace of the film from a messy start to a very enjoyable & at times really funny movie. Emraan Hashmi carries the whole film on his shoulders, & his antics in the film are sure to please his fans! It sad to see the talented Pakistani actress Humaima Malik (Bol) being reduced to almost a good looking prop in the film. Paresh Rawal & Kay Kay Menon are seasoned actors & its always delight to watch! Deepak Tijori has a very a likeable yet small role. The music in Emraan Hashmi films are usually the main plus point here, the songs are just average & are placed at all wrong portions. Director Kunal Deshmukh (Jannat, Jannat 2, Tum Mile) has made film with the sole purpose of entertaining the masses, which means we have to suspend all beliefs in logic! Raja Natwarlal could have been infinitely smarter, more lean and way more taut given the story it was working with and the star cast, but being an Emraan Hashmi fan myself this film does not fail to entertain!
- DirectorSyed Ahmad AfzalStarsJackky BhagnaniNeha SharmaFarooq ShaikhFollow the highs and lows in the life of Abhimanyu who is forced to join Indian politics after his father, the Prime Minister of India, suddenly passes away. The film has a really novel concept, something we all wish to see happening in our beloved country. Even with the politics as the theme, its the sweet love story which forms the main crux of the film. The writers have done a neat job. The movie has a distinct neatness to it and this texture is felt and seen throughout the film. Jackky Baghwani potrayes a dream role for an actor the damn PM of the country!! & trust me he nails it!!Neha Sharma is always a delight. She may be mouthing a dialogue but her eyes have already conveyed her emotions even before she utters the first word. As the girlfriend who is like any other youngster, she is brilliant. The late Farooq Sheikh pulls the curtains on his career with a finely nuanced act. As someone with a high level of influence on the Prime Minister, his character is depicted with a lot of soul. The movie loses grip in the 2nd half a bit, but manages to grab its hold in the final act. This movie has soul. It's a love story set in troubled times. It's also a call for all youngsters out there to go out and make their vote count. Watch this!
