- DirectorDaniel MyrickEduardo SánchezStarsHeather DonahueMichael C. WilliamsJoshua LeonardThree film students vanish after traveling into a Maryland forest to film a documentary on the local Blair Witch legend, leaving only their footage behind.10/10. One of the most well known and really the one that opened the floodgates, this micro-budget movie made hundreds of millions when it finally got wide release. No wonder, it slowly builds suspense and dread until finally the feeling of hopelessness permeates the screen, leaving us breathless with a shocking ending.
- DirectorHowie AskinsStarsRyan McCoyBrett RosenbergAshley BrackenRyan makes a documentary on his friend, Brett, and his first time camping, until a mysterious figure in the woods starts hunting them.8.5/10. Two guys and 2 girls set out in an R/V to go on a camping trip. Once there they set up their tents and start drinking. Strange noises are heard at night and the next day while on a walk, they see a glimpse of a creature they can't identify. The next night things get worse, and by the morning one of them is missing. The last 40-45 minutes of this movie I won't reveal, but are a complete 180 from the beginning and are relentless, featuring awesome special effects including one of the best head shots I have seen. Incredibly, this movie was made for $12,000 but looks like the budget was $1,000,000. I love this one.
- DirectorJaume BalagueróPaco PlazaStarsManuela VelascoFerran TerrazaJorge-Yamam SerranoA television reporter and cameraman follow emergency workers into a dark apartment building and are quickly locked inside with something terrifying.9/10. This Spanish FF is shot documentary style by a newscaster and her cameraman. There's not a boring scene to be had in this zombie style frightfest, and the ending is one of the scariest I have seen. A must see for any fan of the genre
- DirectorJaume BalagueróPaco PlazaStarsJonathan D. MellorManuela VelascoÓscar ZafraIn order to ascertain the current situation inside, a supposed medical officer and a GEO team step into the quarantined and ill-fated apartment building.9/10. A worthy successor to the first, this one expands on its origins and is just about as entertaining and original, while adding some new elements. Not to be missed.
- DirectorFernando Barreda LunaStarsCristian ValenciaClara MoraledaChus PereiroTwo teenage siblings endure a terrifying experience while investigating a rural legend near their family's vacation home.8/10. This one follows two teenagers on vacation with their younger brother and parents, who bring cameras to their summer house in Spain. They decide to explore the supposedly haunted labyrinthine series of paths in the densely wooded area adjacent to their house. The last half hour of this one is horrific at times and very frightening.
- DirectorGonzalo López-GallegoStarsWarren ChristieLloyd OwenRyan RobbinsDecades-old found footage from NASA's abandoned Apollo 18 mission, where three American astronauts were sent on a secret expedition, reveals the reason the U.S. has never returned to the moon.7.5/10. Well made film set in the early 70s suggests that Apollo 17 was not the last mission to the moon, and that one more "secret" mission was made. This movie catches a lot of flak for having a silly plot, but I found it to be very claustrophobic, and it catches the 70s look and feel fairly well. It is very suspenseful and well made, even if the ending is a bit silly.
- DirectorJohn Erick DowdleStarsStacy ChboskyBen MessmerSamantha RobsonIn an abandoned house in Poughkeepsie, New York murder investigators uncover hundreds of tapes showing decades of a serial killer's work.8/10. Graphically gory tale uses a serial killer's home movies as the basis of the film. well done and startling, depressing but fun. Great for those who like realistic, gritty serial killer type stuff.
- DirectorDale FabrigarEverette WallinStarsAbigail SchraderSamantha BelénJimmy LyonsSurvivors of an airplane crash find themselves within the borders of a government testing area and pursued by predators.7/10. A pair of sisters along with an Air Marshall, a stewardess and a few others survive a plane crash. Soon they find themselves being hunted by an unknown predator and are running for their lives. Lots of mystery and suspense with a surprise ending.
- DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsMichelle MorganJoshua CloseShawn RobertsA group of young film students run into real-life zombies while filming a horror movie of their own.7/10. Romero's entry into the genre is of course another one his zombie sequels, which I found fairly entertaining but seems to be regarded as one of his weaker entries. Lots of fun sequences and lots of gore.
- DirectorAndré ØvredalStarsOtto JespersenRobert StoltenbergKnut NærumA group of students investigates a series of mysterious bear killings, but learns that there are much more dangerous things going on. They start to follow a mysterious hunter, learning that he is actually a troll hunter.8/10. Extremely fun fantasy/horror about a group of students who join a real live troll hunter hunting giant trolls in the Norwegian boonies. Very inventive and exciting, highly recommended.
- DirectorSevé SchelenzStarsRob ScattergoodAmber LewisRichard OlakWhen Simon, Rich, and Eva head out on an eagerly anticipated road trip, they bring along a video camera to record their journey. What starts out as a carefree adventure slowly becomes a descent into the ominous as unexplained events threaten to disrupt the balance between the three close friends. Each one of them must struggle with personal demons and paranoia as friendships are tested and gruesome realities are revealed...and recorded.7/10. Creepy and effective thriller about a couple on vacation with their friend. One of them finds that his camera can predict who is going to die, with horrific results.
- DirectorOren PeliStarsKatie FeatherstonMicah SloatMark FredrichsAfter moving into a suburban home, a couple becomes increasingly disturbed by a nightly demonic presence.8/10. Everyone knows this one. I found it genuinely scary, if not overly so. Original for it's time.
- DirectorTod WilliamsStarsKatie FeatherstonMicah SloatMolly EphraimAfter experiencing what they think are a series of "break-ins", a family sets up security cameras around their home, only to realize that the events unfolding before them are more sinister than they seem.6/10. Roughly follows the same timeline as the first one, only from the sister's perspective. A few creepy scenes are interspersed with a lot of boring filler, making this one not as good as it's predecessor.
- DirectorHenry JoostAriel SchulmanStarsChloe CsengeryJessica Tyler BrownChristopher Nicholas SmithIn 1988, young sisters Katie and Kristi befriend an invisible entity called Toby, who resides in their home.7/10. Following Katie and her sister in the 80s as little girls, this is basically the origin story of their haunted lives. Fun movie with a genuinely creepy ending.
- DirectorHenry JoostAriel SchulmanStarsStephen DunhamKatie FeatherstonMatt ShivelyIt has been five years since the disappearance of Katie and Hunter, and a suburban family witness strange events in their neighborhood when a woman and a mysterious child move in.7.5/10. This one takes place a few years after the first two. Very cute girl has creepy little boy move in across the street. When his mother is rushed to the hospital, the girl and her family take the boy is, and she and her friend investigate the increasingly strange goings on. A lot of people hate this one, but I like it. I thought the ending was well thought out and freaky.
- DirectorRuggero DeodatoStarsRobert KermanFrancesca CiardiPerry PirkanenDuring a rescue mission into the Amazon rainforest, a professor stumbles across lost film shot by a missing documentary crew.8/10. One of the first found footage movies has a professor traveling to South America to find a lost crew filming a documentary. He find their footage, which reveals their true fate. Graphic film is really only half found footage, but has some real live animal killing.
- DirectorCarlo LedesmaStarsBel DeliáAndy RodoredaSteve DavisAn investigation into a government cover-up leads to a network of abandoned train tunnels deep beneath the heart of Sydney. As a journalist and her crew hunt for the story it quickly becomes clear the story is hunting them.8.5/10. Aussie found footage has a news crew investigating the disappearance of the homeless in the abandoned subway beneath the streets of Sydney. Things go from bad to worse as they find themselves being chased by something unknown, and they start disappearing one by one. One of my faves.
- DirectorBradley ParkerStarsJesse McCartneyJonathan SadowskiOlivia Taylor DudleySix tourists hire an extreme tour guide who takes them to the abandoned city Pripyat, the former home to the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor. During their exploration, they soon discover they are not alone.4/10. Six Americans hire a Russian tour guide to take them to explore Chernobyl, site of the infamous nuclear meltdown in Russia. They soon discover they are not alone. I did not like this one at all, and found it dull and predictable, with a laughable ending.
- DirectorRichard RaaphorstStarsRobert GwilymHon Ping TangAlexander TerentyevIn the dying days of WWII, a battalion of Russian soldiers is lured into the secret lab of a deranged scientist and forced to face off against an army of horrific flesh-and-metal war machines.8.5/10. Russian Soldiers in Germany during WW2 discover a lab where a German army is being created using dead soldiers combined with deadly weapons. This one is great fun, with lots of gore and awesome monsters.
- DirectorMatt ReevesStarsMike VogelJessica LucasLizzy CaplanA group of friends venture deep into the streets of New York on a rescue mission during a rampaging monster attack.8.5/10. J.J. Abrams produced blockbuster has a massive creature from the depths of the ocean tossing the head of the Statue of Liberty and knocking over skyscrapers. A group of partygoers attempt to cross the city to save a friend. Very well done monster movie with amazing effects. A sequel has been rumored for some time.
- DirectorMatt Bettinelli-OlpinDavid BrucknerTyler GillettStarsCalvin Lee ReederLane HughesAdam WingardWhen a group of misfits are hired by an unknown third party to burglarize a desolate house and acquire a rare VHS tape, they discover more found footage than they bargained for.8/10. Horror anthology is all found footage consisting of 5 stories with a wraparound. I thought it was very well done, with the first and last being my favourite.
- DirectorSimon BarrettJason EisenerGareth EvansStarsLawrence Michael LevineKelsy AbbottAdam WingardSearching for a missing student, two private investigators break into his house and find collection of VHS tapes. Viewing the horrific contents of each cassette, they realize there may be dark motives behind the student's disappearance.8.5/10. This sequel consists of 4 stories with a wraparound. Tapes 1 and 4 are pretty good, 2 is ok, but 3 is simply great. The best short film I have ever seen.
- DirectorCarles TorrensStarsKai LennoxGia MantegnaMichael O'KeefeA team of parapsychologists try to figure out a strange phenomenon occurring in an apartment building."Apartment 143" 7.5/10. A team of parapsychologists investigate the haunting of an apartment in an old building. This is a nice supernatural entry with some creepy and scary sequences.
- DirectorShane Van DykeStarsErin Marie HoganFia PereraNorman SaleetPrepare to see what is allegedly the "actual footage" of the supernatural events leading up to the 2008 murder of Samantha Finley. Released against the wishes of the authorities, this D.V.D. proves that nothing human caused Samantha's death.7/10. PA clone adds nudity to the mix and doesn't take forever to get to the paranormal stuff. Fun rip-off.
- DirectorIsrael LunaJosey WellsStarsJustin ArmstrongBelmarie HuynhSwisyzinnaFilm student Brandon and four friends play with a Ouija board, unwittingly opening a portal to the spirit world and a drowned girl's deadly mystery.7.5. A group of friends experimenting with a (yep you guessed it) Ouija Board unwittingly release a presence that follows them around, haunting them relentlessly. I thought this had a lot of scary sequences but kind of fell apart towards the end. Definitely worth a watch, though.
- DirectorLee AllistonScott BatesStarsJason MazaArnold OcengNatasha Jean SparkesFame-hungry Gemma asks her boyfriend Danny and his media student mate Nathan to film her Big Brother audition. They hear about a sex party and change course, but soon wish they hadn't as the party goers turn out to be devil worshippers.6/10. Decent enough entry finds a group of friends looking for a swinger's party, only to stumble upon a devil worshiping cult. Takes a while to get going but still fun.
- DirectorChristopher DenhamStarsLucian MaiselCady McClainAdrian PasdarIn the remote woods of Upstate New York, David and Clare Poe are attempting to live an idyllic life. However, their twin children's bizarre behavior might just tear the family apart.8/10. A couple discovers their ten year old twins are not what they seem to be. Like "The Bad Seed" on crack x 2. The ending will leave you with your mouth hanging open.
- DirectorBlair EricksonStarsKatia WinterTed LevineMichael McMillianJournalist Anne Roland explores the disturbing links behind her friend's sudden disappearance, an ominous government research chemical, and a disturbing radio broadcast of unknown origin.8/10. One of my favourite movies of 2013. Essentially a tale about government chemical mind control experiments, with a mix of a scary shortwave radio transmission and some super cool Lovecraftian elements a la From Beyond, it is done in a scary manner, with a mix of found footage, real and faked news clips, and sometimes just plain old standard filmed storytelling.
- DirectorRenny HarlinStarsHolly GossMatt StokoeLuke AlbrightA group of students go to the location of the infamous Dyatlov pass incident to make a documentary, but things take a turn for the worse as the secret of what happened there is revealed.7/10. Interesting tale has a group of American students investigating the 50 year old disappearance of a group of skiers in the snow covered mountains of Russia. Soon strange things start happening and they discover the entrance to a structure within the mountain...
- DirectorJimmy LowereeStarsErin WayEric MathenyRyan SmaleAfter her unborn baby is snatched from her womb, Liz and her husband take a vacation to help them overcome the horrifying and mysterious loss. Her brother documents the trip as Liz continues to be terrorized by an unknown force.6.5/10. Police investigate when a pregnant woman wakes up one morning and reports her baby gone. This one has some suspenseful scenes and a pretty well done ending.
- DirectorHasan KaracadagStarsMuharrem DalfidanIncinur DasdemirLeyla GöksunA Turkish family is trying to stay alive at the edge of the apocalypse.5/10. Turkish found footage about the prophecy of the end of days is mostly experimental and boring. The director, Hasan Karacadag, would go on to bigger and better things.
- DirectorHasan KaracadagStarsElçin AtamgüçNihan AypolatPervin BagdatA family's house in Turkey becomes possessed by evil spirits that want to kill humans.9/10. Hasan Karacadag's near masterpiece of horror succeds in scaring us in a far better way than Paranormal Activity. Done in the same style partly, but expanding on the subjects of possession and curses, this one goes balls out and builds up to a deliciously terrifying climax. One of my favourites of 2012.
- DirectorHasan KaracadagStarsElçin AtamgüçOrhan GencerSultan Köroglu KiliçAhead of her wedding, Kübra is possessed by demons. When an examination reveals more horror, her friend, a psychiatrist, tries to perform an exorcism.9/10. Also written and directed by Hasan Karacadag, the film is about a doctor and an exorcist who are called out to the home of a seemingly possessed woman who had killed her husband on their wedding day a couple of years earlier, and who has been possessed since. The doctor belives that the woman has personality disorder and of course the spiritualist believes she is possessed. This almost plays out like a Scully/Mulder X-Files scenario and is fun to watch. The film is a little long at 2 hours 14 minutes but it gets really intense near the middle and end and is a lot of fun.
- DirectorKôji ShiraishiStarsJin MurakiRio KannoTomono KugaA documentary filmmaker explores seemingly unrelated paranormal incidents connected by the legend of an ancient demon called the "kagutaba."8.5/10. It's been a few years since I have seen this one but I really loved it. A filmmaker researches some strange goings on and ties it all to the existence of an ancient demon called the "kagutaba." Most of the movie comes off as a creepy type drama but it gets really scary near the end. Highly recommended found footage horror from Japan.
- DirectorColin MinihanStuart OrtizThe Vicious BrothersStarsBenjamin WilkinsonSean RogersonAshleigh GryzkoFor their ghost hunting reality show, a production crew locks themselves inside an abandoned mental hospital that's supposedly haunted - and it might prove to be all too true.9/10. I absolutely love this one and count it among my favourite horrors. The crew of a ghost hunting television show lock themselves up for the night in an abandoned supposedly haunted insane asylum. Things quickly go from bad to worse as they find themselves locked in with some nasty supernatural beings. Tense and frightening.
- DirectorJohn PoliquinStarsRichard HarmonShawn C. PhillipsJennica FultonA film student who is obsessed with the movie Grave Encounters sets out with his friends to visit the psychiatric hospital depicted in the original film.8.5/10. A man obsessed with the movie Grave Encounters is given the location of the asylum by a mysterious person over the internet and sets out to explore the place and find out the truth behind the story and the original actors. Once they arrive, he and his friends get much more than they bargained for. Almost as good as the first one but it falters a little near the end.
- DirectorDaniel StammStarsPatrick FabianAshley BellIris BahrA troubled evangelical minister agrees to let his last exorcism be filmed by a documentary crew.7.5/10. Despite the misleading poster, this is an interesting tale about a non-believing minister called out to the backwoods to exorcise a seemingly possessed young woman. He admits to the cameras that he's a fraud but doesn't believe the girl is possessed and performs the ritual anyway to give the family some peace of mind. Things get worse and we as well as the minister are left with the question: is she possessed or isn't she? All will be answered in the end.
- DirectorStefan AvalosLance WeilerStarsDavid BeardLance WeilerStefan AvalosA film crew ventures into the forest in search of the mythical 'Jersey Devil'.6.5/10
- DirectorBarry LevinsonStarsWill RogersKristen ConnollyKether DonohueChaos breaks out in a small Maryland town after an ecological disaster occurs.6.5/10. Barry Levinson's entry about a viral outbreak in a small town is worth a watch.
- DirectorRémy BelvauxAndré BonzelBenoît PoelvoordeStarsBenoît PoelvoordeJacqueline Poelvoorde-PappaertNelly PappaertA film crew follows a ruthless thief and heartless killer as he goes about his daily routine. But complications set in when the film crew lose their objectivity and begin lending a hand.8/10. It has been over 15 years since I have seen this, but it still sticks in my mind. A camera crew follows a serial killer around as he offs (or rapes) seemingly anyone at random. Brutal and graphic.
- DirectorFred VogelStarsKyle DealmanCasey EganeyDan FriedmanTwo serial killers go on a murdering rampage as one films the outcome from behind a video camera.7.5/10. Two serial killers film everything as they mutilate and kill everything in sight. One of the sicker movies out there.
- DirectorJerami CruiseKilljoyMichael Todd SchneiderStarsCristie WhilesFred VogelMichael Todd SchneiderTwo friends bring along a newcomer to go on a killing spree.7.5/10. Three killers this time, lots of killing and puking with some rape and pedophile necrophilia thrown in.
- DirectorFred VogelStarsCristie WhilesFred VogelShelby Lyn VogelThe third film in the series. This time a couple go on a killing spree in their local area.8/10. More of the same, this time with some character development and better video quality. A fitting end to the trilogy.
- DirectorMichael GoiStarsAmber PerkinsRachel QuinnDean WaiteTwo teenage girls encounter an Internet child predator.8/10. High school girl is abducted by predator she meets online. Only when her best friend goes missing too is her true fate revealed. One of the more chilling climaxes I have seen.
- DirectorJohn Erick DowdleStarsJennifer CarpenterSteve HarrisColumbus ShortA television reporter and her cameraman are trapped inside a building quarantined by the CDC, after the outbreak of a mysterious virus which turns humans into bloodthirsty killers.6/10. Just ok American remake of [REC] loses something in translation. Doesn't quite capture the essence and scariness of the Spanish orginal.
- DirectorDom RotheroeStarsBradley ColeBrittany AshworthAngela ForrestThe timely story of a normal family disintegrating under financial pressure, eventually driven to the unimaginable. We witness the terrifying events unfold through daughter Judith's video camera, which subsequently becomes Exhibit A.7/10. A married father of two teenagers is under pressure to get a promotion so he can buy a big new house by the water for his family. When things don't go as planned, his sanity begins to unravel and his family begins to pay the price... Decent "descent into madness" found footage has some pretty good performances and a whopper of an ending.
- DirectorJoel AndersonStarsRosie TraynorDavid PledgerMartin SharpeStrange things start happening after a girl is found drowned in a lake.5/10. A girl drowns while on an outing with her family. Ghostly apparitions of her are seen in and around her home, as well as near the site where she drowned. Is it real? Mostly boring drama is told through interviews mixed with camcorder footage as well as cell phone footage and photographs.
- DirectorOlatunde OsunsanmiStarsMilla JovovichElias KoteasWill PattonA thriller involving an ongoing unsolved mystery in Alaska, where one town has seen an extraordinary number of unexplained disappearances during the past 40 years and there are accusations of a federal cover up.5.5/10. Supposedly true story about alien abductions in Alaska is mildly entertaining, but not really believable.
- DirectorMarc EvansStarsSean Cw JohnsonKris LemcheStephen O'ReillyFive people are offered one million dollars to spend six months together in an isolated mansion, with cameras watching their every move.8/10. Five young adults agree to be isolated in a house rigged everywhere with webcams for 6 months to win a million dollars. They soon find out things aren't as they seem. I would recommend not to read any posts or watch a trailer of this movie as to not give anything away. A lot of fun and a really good movie.
- DirectorCorey GrantStarsDrew RauschRich McDonaldAshley WoodAfter a "Bigfoot Hunter" claims to possess the body of a dead Sasquatch, a disgraced investigative journalist stakes his comeback -- and the lives of his documentary film crew -- on proving the find to be a hoax.7/10. A journalist sets out to the wilderness to meet a Bigfoot hunter who claims to have the body of a dead sasquatch. They become the hunted. Fun Bigfoot movie.
- DirectorJosh TrankStarsDane DeHaanAlex RussellMichael B. JordanThree high school friends gain superpowers after making an incredible discovery underground. Soon they find their lives spinning out of control and their bond tested as they embrace their darker sides.9/10. One of my top three favourite found footage films, this follows three high school seniors with totally different personalities who stumble upon an underground passage, which gives them supernatural powers which grow significantly until one of them can't handle them anymore. This is simply a great movie, with incredible special effects and a great story. Highly recommended.
- DirectorScott GlossermanStarsNathan BaeselAngela GoethalsZelda RubinsteinThe next great killer and psychopath has given a documentary film crew exclusive access to his life as he plans his reign of terror over the quiet town of Glen Echo.5/10. Generally considered a found footage movie, though only the first 2/3 is. I missed the point totally on the first two thirds of this one. 3 documentary filmmakers follow a serial killer around as he plots his next mass murder. It is very boring. Why they don't try to stop him makes no sense to me. The last act plays out as a "Scream" ripoff and is a little better but not much. Robert Englund is terrible but it is nice to see Zelda "Poltergeist" Rubinstein. Kane Hodder also makes a very brief cameo.
- DirectorDominic PerezStarsLaurel CasilloMorgan HooperTorrey WeissOn January 9, 2009, five college students left New York City for a weekend in the country. 48 hours later, all five students have simply vanished without a trace. There were no leads and no evidence - until now.7/10. Five friends set off on a weekend in an isolated country home to celebrate one of their birthdays. They are stalked by a strange man in a van along the way. Things eventually start going very wrong as they realize they are not alone at the house. I found this one a little slow to get going but very enjoyable, with a few really scary moments, though maybe not enough payoff at the conclusion. As usual it has a low rating on IMDb just because it is found footage.
- DirectorBrenton SpencerStarsMittita BarberAslam HusainVictor Zinck Jr.In late summer of 2011, five young friends on a road trip went missing after being attacked by nomadic cannibals in a huge RV. Video was recorded by the victims & recovered by police as evidence in their still-unsolved murders.3/10. I was excited about watching this low budget found footage entry from Canada, my home country. Five friends leave the big city for some R&R out in the country. On the way they stop at a small ghost town to pick up some half price beer. They receive an anonymous warning (off camera, why didn't they show it instead of just talking about it afterwards???) not to continue on their journey but of course they do anyways.
They encounter what can only be described as a killer RV, and very bad things start to happen.
Of course all the usual found footage cliches are touched upon, the main one being all the characters constantly nagging the one filming to turn off the camera. This of course gets tiring after a bit.
None of the characters are likeable in any way, and none of their decisions make any sense. There are a few scary ideas, though none of them are fully developed or executed properly.
The film could have gained some "scare factor" or suspense if some or all of it had taken place at night, but it all takes place in broad daylight. All in all a poor effort. - DirectorWilliam Brent BellStarsFernanda AndradeSimon QuartermanEvan HelmuthIn Italy, a woman becomes involved in a series of unauthorized exorcisms during her mission to discover what happened to her mother, who allegedly murdered three people during her own exorcism.6/10.
- DirectorMichael CostanzaStarsStephanie DeesJohnny BurtonDiane BehrensA separated couple attempts to keep their friendship alive by video chatting. But a chance encounter with an online psychic initiates a disturbing reign of terror.4/10. John's 21 year old ex-girlfriend Rebecca has moved 8 hours away to rent a room in a home in Collingswood, NJ to go to school. They keep in touch via webcam. For her birthday, john hooks her up with an online psychic, who eventually reveals that a cult used to operate in her area, and might still be in existence.
What follows are a series of web calls back and forth between the 2 where virtually nothing happens, and no suspense is built, as should be the case in this sort of movie. Rebecca uncovers some secrets about the house she is living in and the movie abruptly ends, with a mildly scary reveal.
The poster art for this movie is peppered with 4 star reviews and awards. One reviewer even says it is "The best low budget horror movie since The Blair Witch Project." I heartily disagree. As a huge found footage enthusiast I found it sub-par and lacking in any real suspense or horror. - DirectorJonathan HensleighStarsSandi RobertsVeronica SywakCallard HarrisTwo young couples head into the New Guinea wilderness in an effort to find Michael Rockefeller, the heir to the Rockefeller fortune who disappeared in 1961.6/10. Direct to video found footage by producer Gale Anne Hurd (Terminator, Aliens, and many many others) and director Jonathan Hensleigh (writer of Die Hard With a Vengeance, Armageddon, etc.) finds 2 couples traveling from Australia to Papua New Guinea to search for Michael Rockefeller, missing since 1961, and presumed to be living with the native cannibals.
As the four set of into the jungle, the serious couple starts inexplicably acting horribly towards the fun partying couple and the four of them fight for days, seemingly for no reason, until they hate each other.
The film flounders here for a bit as characters' actions and personality traits do a 180 and not a lot of their decisions make sense. One of them suddenly becomes a psychopath. Another screams incessantly every time she sees something she doesn't like, despite the fact that she is being stalked. I mean, wouldn't you be quiet if you were being pursued through the jungle?
The film redeems itself near the end as the last 25 minutes or so are tense and scary with some nicely done practical effects. All in all worth a watch. - DirectorEric NicholasStarsAna Claudia TalancónColin HanksJordana SpiroA quiet but disturbed young man puts the life of a woman he's obsessed with under a virtual microscope when he installs hidden cameras throughout her house.6/10. Doug, played by Colin Hanks, goes out one day with a camcorder looking for a woman to follow. He settles on Amy, played by Ana Claudia Talancon, first by following her around everywhere she goes, then by setting up her whole apartment with hidden cameras.
He watches her every move, from showering to sexually abusing her hair brush, and uses the information he gleans from his surveillance to insinuate himself into her life.
This is not an original but yet interesting premise that plays itself out as one would expect. Hanks is competent in his role, and Talancon is a standout. The problem is that not enough tension and suspense are built to have the end payoff be enough for this movie to get a really good rating from me.
This is still a decent effort, and worth a watch for fans of found footage thrillers. - DirectorCheol-ha LeeStarsLee Hwa-jungTae-Ho HyunIn-Kul JunOver the past 42 years, six people have gone missing, eight people have died "accidently" and eleven cases of murder have occurred in a deserted house. 3 members of an abandoned house exploring club and 3 staff members of a broadcasting company go into the deserted house. All of them disappear.5/10. A team of ghost hunters is followed by a film crew to an abandoned cookie factory to investigate some supposed paranormal occurrences after some murders years earlier.
After they arrive, a lot of time is spent exploring the factory and surrounding buildings, and not much happens for a while. This is the build-up stage of these types of found footage horror movies where usually some suspense is created, but not really in this case.
Eventually it gets dark and things start to happen but it falls in the too little too late category, and I think it falls a little flat as the conclusion is not as scary as the filmmakers intend it to be. Another complaint I have is that once things start to go down, a creepy musical track is added to the mix, which detracts from the found footage experience.
While not a terrible movie, I feel it could have been done much better. - DirectorLesley ManningStarsMichael ParkinsonSarah GreeneMike SmithIn a "live" broadcast on Halloween night, a BBC team investigate a reported poltergeist in an ordinary London home.8.5/10. Very spooky British found footage shot as a television special that apparently caused quite an uproar on Halloween night when it aired, as a portion of the viewers thought it was the real deal.
This one follows two on the scene reporters investigating the goings on in an around a supposed haunted house, while in the studio the host takes calls and interviews the occupants of the house, as well as some paranormal experts.
I don't want to give anything away so I will stop here. This being a horror movie things obviously escalate and get out of hand. I found that this film moves at an excellent pace and builds tension and suspense nicely. Parts of it I found genuinely frightening.
It is also nice to see Craig Charles here. I love him in Red Dwarf, and being Canadian don't have the chance to see him in much else. The acting is top notch, especially by the mother and 2 little girls.
All in all a fun watch for fans of the supernatural. - DirectorBenjamin WilkinsStarsCarly OatesRyan ShogrenQuantae LoveAfter killing and cannibalizing several men and being found unfit for trial, Regina Stevens desperately tried to convince her psychiatric caregivers that she wasn't mentally ill, but was in fact slowly becoming a real life zombie.2/10. The film opens with the pretty doctor Regina sticking a gun in her mouth and pulling the trigger. We are then informed that she had "murdered and cannibalized at least 4 men, but had never been brought to trial."
Cut to a mental hospital where Regina is being treated by a psychiatrist, after surviving her attempted suicide. She insists that she is a monster who he must let die, while he insists she has schizophrenia.
The bulk of the film is then told through flashbacks that show us her courtship and eventual engagement to Ryan, an EMT. Ryan and Regina attend a karaoke party in which drugs are involved, and Regina has a bad reaction and is rushed off to hospital. Soon after recovering, she finds that she can no longer stomach normal food, except for raw pork.
Soon that is not enough and she finds that she can only subsist on human remains, so after work she steals those bags labelled "biowaste" out of the hospital garbage and brings them home to consume.
What follows is an increasingly ludicrous series of events that pretty much defies logic. Regina pours bags of human fat into a glass, and drinks it like a milkshake while her fiancee looks on, giggling. It doesn't even seem to phase him. She tries to eat him and he laughs, and tells her to hurry to work. They watch a documentary on ants and decide from that that she has a fungus in her brain.
None of this seems to make any sense to me but I went with it, waiting for something interesting to happen. Nothing really did. The two leads do a passable acting job but Regina's psychiatrist character is portrayed with some of the worst acting I have ever seen. The sound is horrible and the music sometimes is so loud that you can't hear what the characters are saying. All in all a big letdown, with a laughable ending. - DirectorYiuwing LamStarsNick RenaudHenry MonfriesGemmenne de la PeñaIn the Summer before their senior year, three teens tried to execute the perfect prank on their bully. Instead, they executed him.3/10. Prank is the story of two bullied geeks and their sometime friend, a chubby girl with the unlikely name of "Chunk", who decide to pull a prank on their two tormentors.
This is all filmed with a semi-broken camcorder that one of them is always using to film the action. A few pranks are planned but nothing really pans out.
Here is where my criticism of the movie begins. Most of the dialogue seems forced. Chunk's dialogue in particular is so stupid that it takes you out of the movie. Every other sentence she utters concludes with the word "man."
All of the characters are portrayed as stereotypes, from the black man to the geek to the bully etc. This becomes grating after a while. Nothing interesting happens for long periods of time, and then one of the characters has a total personality change and at least some things start to happen.
What does happen, though, isn't really that interesting, as we don't really care for any of these unsympathetic people or their actions.
There are a couple of things that do happen in the last 15 minutes or so that save this from being a total waste. I would have voted a 1 had it not been for a couple of semi-interesting twists. - DirectorMartin Wichmann AndersenStarsSteve BencichTony BessonHayley DerryberryIn 2010, paranormal investigators tried to film Richard Speck's ghost at the site of his heinous killing spree. The victims' families have finally released the footage that documents their last days.6.5/10. Borrows from better found footage horrors, but still manages to work
The film opens with the requisite text informing us that a TV documentary crew had went to film in an abandoned asylum and while they were never found, of course their footage was.
We then see this team of ghost hunters arrive at their destination, locking themselves in, hoping to catch some supernatural phenomena at the site of a mass murder 40 years ago, where seven nurses were raped and killed.
Immediately they start to be killed in gruesome fashion, one by one, at first unnoticed by the rest of the crew, who wander the building, encountering ghostly voices and sounds, as well as objects that move by themselves. Their video cameras offer little illumination into the dark that seems to permeate every nook and cranny of the decrepit institution. The mood and atmosphere are actually done very well.
Eventually of course they discover that they are being offed, one by one, and desperately search for a way out of the building.
The film seems to borrow heavily from another found footage movie, REC. No less than three characters are pulled out of sight of the camera, and into the darkness. Another scene from REC is also copied. Grave Encounters seems to have been the template for this film, as the theme is also copied, including the look of the asylum.
I can look past these facts though, as the film never really dragged or got boring. Two of the three female stars had nude scenes, and there is a decent amount of blood and gore. It kept me entertained throughout.

Documentarian Danielle decides to make of movie about the events and brings a production crew of three to the town to investigate.
The women had been found mutilated and with bite marks. No blood was found at the crime scenes. A man is on death row for the murders and Danielle doesn't believe he is guilty.
They interview the convicted man, who seems crazy, and writes a symbol on the partition glass in blood, but doesn't give them much by the way of answers.
Next they go on a hike in the snowy woods to visit the crime scenes and gather what information they can. This is where the real action starts. The movie gets pretty interesting here as they are stalked in the woods.
People will draw comparisons to The Blair Witch Project here, fairly, since it does follow the same formula. The one review I skimmed said that it was wrong to show the creature, that what you don't see is scarier, a la Blair Witch. This is not true of course. Depending on what movie you are making and what you intend for the audience, both ways can be very effective, and it works here.

I enjoyed the first half hour of this as most found footage films of this type have some build-up and this one looked like it would be heading in an entertaining direction. However nothing much happens until the last 20 minutes or so and that is not very entertaining, and not as scary as the filmmakers intended it to be.
The leads were likable and their conversation flowed and did not seem forced. However their actions near the end didn't make very much sense. The end itself was very abrupt and did seem forced.

This being a found footage horror movie, there is a ghost, and strange sounds, and a bunch of other stuff that is not worth mentioning because it is all very boring, and not at all interesting. There are no real scares to speak of, one particular caricature of an annoying character, and the ending is of course abrupt without any real payoff.

Haunted Changi is the first found footage I have seen from Singapore, and the only one that I know of. It is one of the most stylistically filmed found footage movies that I have seen.

The film a very well made intro to their film using stock footage and exterior shots to establish the history of the hospital, expertly narrated by the host.

A nighttime excursion is then carried out, and this is when the action starts, as they bring a team of ghost hunters with them to try and capture some paranormal activity.
This is all well made and acted with a few good scares, especially near the end, however, this movie could have gained a higher rating from me if it hadn't taken so long to get going, and had delivered a little bit more horror. I have been waiting for a movie like this for some time. We have been to the moon, and it has been photographed and filmed. We have sent countless probes and rovers to Mars and have even seen a photo or two of the surface of Venus.
We have never sent any humans past the moon however, and this subject hasn't been explored in many movies. We have the resources and technology to visit other planets and moons in our solar system, yet we spend the money on other things such as the military and weapons.
This is the movie I have been waiting for, a film that takes places relatively in our own time and sends a mission to the most talked about place in the system, Jupiter's moon Europa. The reason scientists are so curious about this moon is because it is entirely covered in ice, and is thought to contain liquid water below that. To most people, liquid water means a very good chance of life.
The expedition sets off on an almost 2 year voyage and everything is filmed and sent back to earth. Six months in they lose contact with earth and lose a member of their crew. It is after they land on Europa that the real action begins.
I really liked this movie. The art and set direction were great. The shots of Europa and Jupiter were well done and the landing scene shots were breathtaking.
The film did drag in parts, though, and I didn't really care for the non-linear style of storytelling. I think it would have worked a little better if it had been shown in chronological sequence, building the tension and excitement as it went along.

A.J. Bowen plays a different kind of role than he's used to and does a great job of it.
Fun cult movie has West moving in a new direction and he does a good job of it. There is quite a bit more action than his previous 2 films as the action moves along at a fairly steady pace. As the documentary reaches its conclusion Anthony begins to become uncomfortably aware of the how much of his life he has revealed to these filmmakers. In a final interview with Anthony a deadly confrontation erupts and all that remains is a broken camera and this footage. This film will challenge the audience to view a horrific side of humanity and will deliver a social commentary that leaves the audience thinking about the world they live in and the power and effect of all media.7/10. Odd Canadian film has two obviously first time documentary filmmakers following around a cannibalistic serial killer as he first stalks and kills his victims, then prepares them in stews and barbecues for consumption.
The way this is all show in nonchalantly and in such an off-hand manner adds to the dramatic effect as he literally hangs his prizes upside down, decapitates them and hacks them apart piece by piece, extracting "the best parts" for consumption along the way. The practical effects are absolutely amazing I must say. There is one incredible scene where they show him preparing an entire body in a very fast forward sequence that must have been a gruelling long shot.
The performances are all pretty credible here, and the movie is well shot. The winter Canadian scenery is nice to look at with one scene in particular showing New Years at the Toronto City Hall.
Fun fare for fans of the genre. - DirectorGlenn TriggsStarsJane Elizabeth BarryGeoff PinfieldDavid MacraeWhile investigating the legend of a mysterious group of religious people living in the forest, a local news crew becomes trapped in the grasp of a doomsday cult, who are about to execute their final act of devotion and biblical punishment.7/10. Refreshing film from Australia picks up on the new trend of combining found footage and Cults. Two documentary filmmakers follow a trail of clues until they are invited to spend a few days at a cult deep in the forests of Australia. When they get there things start really getting bizarre.
As they start following the daily lives of the cult members and interviewing them it becomes clear that things just aren't right. The leader, a creepy old man named Michael, regales them with tales of the apocalypse and their little group's role in it. The cult is comprised only of women and girls. Where did the men go?
Comparisons can be drawn here to Ti West's "The Sacrament," and rightfully so, but this one is so much more bizarre and sinister that it seems more like a horror movie than a rehashing of the Jonestown Massacre.
There are allusions to pedophilia and murder and so much else. The mood is just perfect and the scenery is at once beautiful and strangely creepy. The ending is startling as well as ambiguous and just perfect for this type of movie. It definitely kept me enthralled throughout. Highly recommended for fans of the genre, and fans of horror in general. - DirectorEdward BoaseStarsJemma DallenderJoshua DickinsonNate FallowsThree intrepid flatmates who purchase the supposedly haunted antique on eBay and set up round the clock cameras in the hopes of capturing evidence of something going bump in the night.6.5/10. This found footage entry features 3 flatmates who buy a supposed antique mirror online in the hope of winning a million dollars in a paranormal challenge. All they have to do is prove the existence of ghosts.
They of course set up the mirror on the wall, and the apartment up in cameras, as things slowly get out of hand. One of the three immediately starts to undergo a drastic mental transformation, and the other two simply don't know how to deal with it. Things get progressively creepy and weirder around the apartment as they finally start to wonder if the mirror is really haunted.
The first hour of this movie is creepy and effective in places, but does suffer a little from being a little repetitive, with not much moving the plot forward from time to time.
The last half hour ramps up the tension and is where the film really delivers in its scares. There is a little bit of gore and a couple of nice scary sequences.
Overall worth a watch, especially for fans of the found footage sub-genre.
