- DirectorGillian RobespierreStarsJenny SlateJake LacyGaby HoffmannA twenty-something comedienne's unplanned pregnancy forces her to confront the realities of independent womanhood for the first time.Hipstery, funny, and adorable. A lot like girls. I related to this so hard. Very great 8/8.
- DirectorTaika WaititiStarsSam NeillJulian DennisonRima Te WiataA national manhunt is ordered for a rebellious kid and his foster uncle who go missing in the wild New Zealand bush. The first act steals from Wes Anderson and puts a heart-warmingly kiwi spin on it. That pretty much explains this movie: heart-warmingly kiwi. It's also really exciting, beautiful, funny and features some pretty awesome child performances. The adults are cool too.
Also, you'll note it's kind of the plot of housebound flung into a different genre.
*beep* one more thing, google Barry Crump after you watch it. He wrote the book this was based on and had a real interesting life. It will put the whole movie in perspective. - DirectorByron HowardRich MooreJared BushStarsGinnifer GoodwinJason BatemanIdris ElbaIn a city of anthropomorphic animals, a rookie bunny cop and a cynical con artist fox must work together to uncover a conspiracy. My favorite new favorite Pixar movie. It's even better than Inside Out. ~actually about racism~ You will ship animals and feel weird about it.
- CreatorMarnie DickensStarsJodie ComerValene KaneRichard Rankin26-year-old Ivy Moxam steps out of an ordinary house, on an ordinary street, on an ordinary day. Ivy hasn't been seen for thirteen years; she was kidnapped in 2003 at the age of thirteen. This one is intense as *beep* in a way only the British can do. Last few episodes weren't quite as well-written as the first ones, but still worth watching. Won't take you long; it's only a few episodes long.
- DirectorTim BurtonStarsJohnny DeppWinona RyderDianne WiestThe solitary life of an artificial man - who was incompletely constructed and has scissors for hands - is upended when he is taken in by a suburban family.Back when Tim Burton made good movies. Quirky and tragic. ~actually about racism~ Idk why but might be a good one to watch over Christmas.
- DirectorAnne FontaineStarsNaomi WattsRobin WrightXavier SamuelA pair of childhood friends and neighbors fall for each other's sons. This isn't the best movie to be honest. But it's some good old scandalous fun. There are some good performances and it will make you want to spend more time at the beach. This kind of movie is only for pretentious *beep*
- DirectorMichael HanekeStarsNaomi WattsTim RothMichael PittTwo psychopathic young men take a family hostage in their cabin.Micheal Pitt is like my weird friend Toby in this. The director said he preferred this movie to the original. It's stylish, disturbing, and features some amazing performances. There's a stretch of it that drags for a bit, but that's because it's ~actually about the portrayal of violence in the media~
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsLaurence OlivierJoan FontaineGeorge SandersA self-conscious woman juggles adjusting to her new role as an aristocrat's wife and avoiding being intimidated by his first wife's spectral presence.Probably my favorite old black and white movie. It will make you feel for Joan Fontaine a lot. Very tense and gothic, but not as melodramatic as it could be. The central relationship is actually really fascinating and not creepy or sexist. You will ship it and feel weird about it for the right reasons.
- DirectorJohn CrowleyStarsSaoirse RonanEmory CohenDomhnall GleesonAn Irish immigrant lands in 1950s Brooklyn, where she quickly falls into a romance with a local. When her past catches up with her, however, she must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within. Will make you feel warm on the inside. Great period detail. Very fun and pulls at the heartstrings.
- DirectorArthur PennStarsWarren BeattyFaye DunawayMichael J. PollardBored waitress Bonnie Parker falls in love with an ex-con named Clyde Barrow and together they start a violent crime spree through the country, stealing cars and robbing banks. This movie will make you want to take a murder road trip. It's also quite meaningful. The two main performances are as vulnerable as they are charismatic. You'll want this movie to be your aesthetic.
- DirectorLevan GabriadzeStarsHeather SossamanMatthew BohrerCourtney HalversonA group of online chatroom friends find themselves haunted by a mysterious, supernatural force using the account of their dead friend.Good, dumb fun. A few genuinely good scares. The computer screen thing actually works quite well. But it is silly. It's the kind of movie you could watch with and idiot and you'd both enjoy it.
- DirectorPark Chan-wookStarsSong Kang-hoShin Ha-kyunBae DoonaA recently laid off factory worker kidnaps his former boss' friend's daughter, hoping to use the ransom money to pay for his sister's kidney transplant.Artsy as *beep*. This movie makes murder look great, but in a grittier way than Kill Bill or Bonnie and Clyde. You will feel ~sympathy~ for and be disgusted by all the characters. The title pretty much sums up the movie in that way. Plot twists a hoe won't see coming. I want to marry Doona Bae.
- DirectorPaul WeitzStarsLily TomlinJulia GarnerMarcia Gay HardenA teenager facing an unplanned pregnancy seeks help from her acerbic grandmother, a woman who is long estranged from her daughter.Very real, but never loiteringly gloomy like Lars Von Trier's movies. Some fantastic performances. You will love Lily Tomlin. Also, I am loving watching Julie Garner's career progress; she is a joy.
This is unrelated, but it's such *beep* that America doesn't have free abortions. - DirectorLeos CaraxStarsGuillaume DepardieuYekaterina GolubevaCatherine DeneuveA young writer becomes intrigued with a mysterious dark-haired woman who claims to be his long-lost sister, starting an unusual relationship with her and prompting a downward spiral involving his domineering mother and lovely fiancée.This movie isn't good, but this movie is definitely an experience. I'm pretty sure the director was insane. You won't see anything like it.
- DirectorLenny AbrahamsonStarsBrie LarsonJacob TremblaySean BridgersA little boy is held captive in a room with his mother since his birth, so he has never known the world outside. The two leads act their asses off. Intense and honest. The "room" at the start feels like a world.
- DirectorGeorge CukorStarsCharles BoyerIngrid BergmanJoseph CottenTen years after her aunt was murdered in their London home, a woman returns from Italy in the 1880s to resume residence with her new husband. His obsessive interest in the home rises from a secret that may require driving his wife insane.Although this contains some rather hokey old movie moments and a *beep* cop-out ending, the movie really does stand out as a compelling psychological thriller. Ingrid Bergman is great. The maid has some sass.
- DirectorAnh Hung TranStarsKen'ichi MatsuyamaRinko KikuchiKiko MizuharaToru recalls his life in the 1960s, when his friend Kizuki killed himself and he grew close to Naoko, Kizuki's girlfriend, and another woman, the outgoing, lively Midori.Very pretty and odd. Can be slow and self-indulgent. Rinko Kikuchi is always good. A fascinating look at how you regard love when you're young. Again this movie is gorgeous. Not for everyone. Lots of weird, uncomfortable sex scenes for both the audience and the characters. I don't even know how I feel about this if I'm honest.
- DirectorTom HarperStarsThomas TurgooseHolliday GraingerRuth WellmanWhen David discovers that his best friend Emily is being forced to leave their caravan park home, he agrees to help her to run away. But after their plan starts to unravel, secrets come to light that transform his life in ways he never imagined. This is a bad movie. But watch it with a friend so you can see each other's reaction to the totally unexpected ending. Holliday Granger's performance was good. You will hate all the characters. It feels very long.
- DirectorJoe CornishStarsJohn BoyegaJodie WhittakerAlex EsmailA teen gang in South London defend their block from an alien invasion. This movie is so much fun. It's delightful, exciting, and funny in again; a way only the British can do. It's epic and endearing.
- DirectorJohn Lee HancockStarsEmma ThompsonTom HanksAnnie Rose BuckleyAuthor P.L. Travers reflects on her childhood after reluctantly meeting with Walt Disney, who seeks to adapt her Mary Poppins books for the big screen. It's heartwarming and heartbreaking. Actors are at the top of their game here. A really good story.
- DirectorAndrew HaighStarsCharlotte RamplingTom CourtenayGeraldine JamesA married couple preparing to celebrate their wedding anniversary receives shattering news that promises to forever change the course of their lives. An amazing feat for Charlotte Rampling. A lot of the movie is spent zoomed in on her face and she never stops being interesting. This movie takes an idea that could so easily have been dull and made it intense from moment one. This one is real confronting.
- DirectorAna Lily AmirpourStarsSheila VandArash MarandiMarshall ManeshIn the Iranian ghost-town Bad City, a place that reeks of death and loneliness, the townspeople are unaware they are being stalked by a lonesome vampire. This movie oozes cool. The look of this movie makes me want to follow the director on Tumblr. So groovy. Great cat casting.
- DirectorKyle Patrick AlvarezStarsEzra MillerTye SheridanBilly CrudupIn 1971, twenty-four male students are selected to take on randomly assigned roles of prisoners and guards in a mock prison situated in the basement of the Stanford psychology building. This movie is ridiculously tense. It has to have one of the strongest casts this year. It is chock full of young actors that are headed in amazing places. The performances are so real it's actually disturbing. This movie will make you hate yourself and humanity.
Also, I heard this movie was edited on Adobe Premier Pro. How cool is that? - DirectorCharlie McDowellStarsMark DuplassElisabeth MossTed DansonA troubled couple vacate to a beautiful getaway, but bizarre circumstances further complicate their situation. This movie is trippy. Two great performances. The less you know the better. Duplass know how to do it.
- DirectorYann DemangeStarsJack O'ConnellSam ReidSean HarrisIn 1971, a young and disoriented British soldier is accidentally abandoned by his unit following a riot on the deadly streets of Belfast.Moves like a thriller, but thanks to talented direction is so much smarter than one. Powerhouse performances.
