- DirectorIngmar BergmanStarsMax von SydowLiv UllmannGertrud FridhWhile vacationing on a remote German island with his younger pregnant wife, an artist has an emotional breakdown while confronting his repressed desires. One of my favourite movies. A weird, surreal film that isn't for everyone, but for the right audience it's brilliant.
- DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsTom HanksRobin WrightGary SiniseThe history of the United States from the 1950s to the '70s unfolds from the perspective of an Alabama man with an IQ of 75, who yearns to be reunited with his childhood sweetheart.Arguably the biggest role of Tom Hanks, this film won a lot of Oscars in it's release and was critically praised, with Roger Ebert calling it a "magical" movie that was a brilliant blend of comedy and drama. It's remained a classic, however over the years the regular "overrated" remarks started coming in, with Amy Nicholson stating that it was "a movie with nothing to say." I respectfully disagree, and think that this film is a very intelligent perspective on life, the war and romance.
- DirectorMaurice TourneurStarsTula BelleRobin MacdougallEdwin E. ReedWith the aid and guidance of a magical fairy, two peasant children set out in search of the elusive "Blue Bird of Happiness".It's always good to watch a movie with a nice, vintage feel to it, and it's always good to see an imagination run loose at the camera. I haven't seen this, but I'm really interested in seeing it because of the surreal visual effects and the imaginative story it contains, and if it sounds good to you, maybe you shall give it a watch some day.
- DirectorLouis FeuilladeStarsMary HaraldRené CrestéGeorges BiscotJacques d'Athys, a French adventurer, returns to his home in Nice after an expedition to Indochina where he has picked up a Eurasian fiancée and a book that, unbeknownst to him, contains a coded message revealing the whereabouts of both secret treasures and sensitive government intelligence. This makes him the target of foreign spies, including a Marquise of mysterious Latin origin, a Hindu hypnotist and an evil German doctor, who will stop at nothing to obtain the book. This is a 7 hour long serial directed by Louis Feuillade, director of a surreal horror serial called Les Vampires. I want to see this because (1 I'm interested in movies that go over the 2.5 hour mark and (2 It's an adventure movie. I don't know why, but for some reason long adventure movies are at the peak of my interest right now.
- DirectorMartin GabelStarsRobert CummingsSusan HaywardAgnes MooreheadA publisher insinuates himself into the mouldering mansion of the centenarian lover of a renowned but long-dead poet to find his lost love letters.Black and white film-noir made in 1947 that is set in Venice. What more could one ask for?
- DirectorDavid RikerStarsAnthony RiveraJoseph RiganoMiguel MaldonadoThe stories of four Hispanic immigrants living in New York City.Immigrants moving to countries away from their own is a debated topic, yet an interesting one as well. This film is about a few Hispanic immigrants who move to America. The plot looked interesting, and on Rotten Tomatoes the audience score is at 100% right now, so I'm looking forward to watching this.
- DirectorPeter WatkinsStarsFrancine BastienBrian MulroneyMila MulroneyA global look at the impact of military use of nuclear technology and people's perception of it.Again, I'm very interested in long movies. This film is 14 hours long and is a documentary about nuclear technology, something people either side with or strongly disagree. I'm no fan of the ordinary documentary, however any documentary that thinks out of the square of normal documentary fare is one I'll surely want to view.
- DirectorF.W. MurnauStarsArnold KorffLulu Kyser-KorffLothar MehnertIn the castle Vogeloed, a few aristocrats are awaiting baroness Safferstätt. But first count Oetsch invites himself.. Everyone thinks he murdered his brother, baroness Safferstat's first husband, three years ago. So he is rather undesirable. But Oetsch stays; arguing he is not the murderer and will find the real one...For the same reason as The Blue Bird: surrealism, vintage-feel and imaginative story.
- DirectorF.W. MurnauStarsHermann PichaRosa ValettiAndré MattoniA young man shows his millionaire grandfather a film based on Molière's Tartuffe, in order to expose the old man's hypocritical governess who covets his own inheritance.Vintage 20's drama directed by the well regarded F.W Murnau about a young man who decides to show his grandfather a film based on Tartuffe, in order to expose the old man's hypocritical governess. As long as the film is about film, it's one I'll want to watch, especially if it's directed by directors like Murnau.
- DirectorTomas AlfredsonStarsKåre HedebrantLina LeanderssonPer RagnarOskar, an overlooked and bullied boy, finds love and revenge through Eli, a beautiful but peculiar girl.I love a good horror film. As I was looking through a list of vampire movies, this came up. I had a look at the trailer and I thought it looked amazing. So, I decided to myself that I'd like to see this, especially with all the praise around it's atmosphere.
- DirectorLuchino ViscontiStarsLuchino ViscontiAntonio PietrangeliAntonio ArcidiaconoIn rural Sicily, the fishermen live at the mercy of the greedy wholesalers. One family risks everything to buy their own boat and operate independently.Again, for the vintage feel and the high praise, but also because it goes past the 2.5 hour barrier. It's also a movie set on a boat at the sea, so the plot interested me even more.
- DirectorF.W. MurnauStarsWerner KraussEugen KlöpferVladimir GajdarovWhen farmer Rog dies, his son Peter stays, but Johannes can not be satisfied with such a condition (and servant Maria's love) and finds a job as old Count Rudenberg's secretary. His ambition leads him to charm Gerda, the Count's unique daughter. But when he discovers that Count's second wife Helga will soon inherit a field that only he knows his underground is full with petroleum, he changes his allegiance... Greed and death.Another Murnau drama film I want to see. I was having a look at some of the reviews on iMDB, and someone compared this film to the style of Ingmar Bergmann, and as that's one of my favourite directors, I knew I had to give it a watch someday.
- DirectorF.W. MurnauStarsCharles FarrellMary DuncanDavid TorrenceA Chicago waitress falls in love with a Minnesota farmer, and decides to face a life in the country.Murnau, stop directing good-looking films!
- DirectorRichard BrooksStarsWarren BeattyGoldie HawnGert FröbeA bank security expert plots with a call girl to rob three safety deposit boxes containing $1.5 million in cash belonging to three very different criminals from a high-tech security bank in Hamburg, Germany.Action movie made in the 70's. My favourite period for action films, so I would like to see this if I ever get the chance.
- DirectorYann DemangeStarsJack O'ConnellSam ReidSean HarrisIn 1971, a young and disoriented British soldier is accidentally abandoned by his unit following a riot on the deadly streets of Belfast.I like war films, and when I saw the 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and the nomination for a Bafta Film Award, I thought to myself that it would look good. If you have an interest in British war films, this may be one to look at.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsJohn TravoltaUma ThurmanSamuel L. JacksonThe lives of two mob hitmen, a boxer, a gangster and his wife, and a pair of diner bandits intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption.Well, first off it's directed by Quentin Tarantino, master of tension, dialogue and action sequences. That's all you need to know, no?
- DirectorJohn S. RobertsonStarsRichard BarthelmessMay McAvoyIda WatermanA crippled World War I veteran retracts to a small cottage in the countryside to escape from his nosy family and to hide from the outside world. There he meets a plain but also a very kind young woman. She reveals to him that the house he is staying in is in fact a very old honeymoon cottage. Spirits of newlyweds from the past, who are still swirling through the cottage, soon cast a love spell upon them.Vintage war drama with a good-looking storyline. he film is about a World War I veteran that retracts to a small cottage in the countryside to hide from the outside world. With an interesting storyline like that and a vintage feel, it's one I'd surely watch if I ever get the time.
- DirectorWilliam KeighleyStarsJames CagneyMargaret LindsayAnn DvorakJames Cagney helped jump-start the gangster genre as The Public Enemy. Outcries against movies that glorified underworld criminals put Cagney on the side of the law in 'G' Men.Silly little vintage film-noir about a Law School graduate who wants to join the FBI. I don't really know much about it, but the poster and the fact that James Cagney was in it was enough to get me interested in the movie. If it sounds interesting to you, maybe give it a watch.
- DirectorMichael PowellEmeric PressburgerStarsWendy HillerRoger LiveseyPamela BrownA young Englishwoman goes to the Hebrides to marry her older, wealthier fiancé. When the weather keeps them separated on different islands, she begins to have second thoughts.Critics on iMDB say that it portrays Scotland's beauty perfectly, with one critic saying that he envied those who hadn't seen the film yet. That immediately interested me, so I had a look at the storyline which was about a woman who meets her father in a restaurant to tell him that she will marry Robert Bellinger in Kiloran island, in the Hebrides Islands, Scotland. She travels from Manchester to the island of Mull, where she stays trapped due to the windy weather. Whilst on the island, she meets Torquil McNeil and as the days go by they fall in love with each other. So, the interesting storyline and the outstanding reviews were enough for me to go, "Hmm, I may give this a watch."
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsRussell CroweJoaquin PhoenixConnie NielsenA former Roman General sets out to exact vengeance against the corrupt emperor who murdered his family and sent him into slavery.(1 It was directed by Ridley Scott, director of Alien (2 It's a period film that goes past the 2.5 hour mark (3 It's said to have some of the best action sequences in film history. The cinematography and costume design are also supposed to be top notch, and if that's the case, I think I'd like it quite a lot, and you may too.
- DirectorLeslie HowardStarsLeslie HowardFrancis L. SullivanAllan JeayesProfessor Horatio Smith, while seeming very unassuming, rescues victims of Nazi persecution during World War II.War film made while the war was on. The film director probably had a better idea of what the war was like because he was filming while the war was happening. I look forward to watching this, as I'm expecting a highly accurate portrayal of the war. Apparently, one of the genres of the film is also adventure, and I am a very big fan of adventure films.
- StarsRobert MitchumJane SeymourHart BochnerThe trials of the Henry and the Jastrow families amidst the events after the U.S.'s entry into World War II.This is said to be one of the best mini-series ever made.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsMatthew McConaugheyAnne HathawayJessica ChastainWhen Earth becomes uninhabitable in the future, a farmer and ex-NASA pilot, Joseph Cooper, is tasked to pilot a spacecraft, along with a team of researchers, to find a new planet for humans.I know, I haven't seen this, but I think it's about time that I do. Directed by Christopher Nolan, longer than the 2.5 hour mark, set in space and raving reviews...it sounds spectacular. Critics call it visually stunning with emotion and great performances to top it off. It sounds very good to me.
- DirectorNorman JewisonStarsAl PacinoJack WardenJohn ForsytheA lawyer is forced to defend a judge, while defending other clients, and trying to find punishment for the guilty and provide justice for the innocent.Early Al Pacino law film that is said to have one of Al Pacino's best performances. It also has good reviews, but its Al that is drawing me in.
- DirectorRussell MulcahyStarsChristopher LambertSean ConneryClancy BrownAn immortal Scottish swordsman must confront the last of his immortal opponents, a murderously brutal barbarian who lusts for the fabled "Prize".One of my favourite movies. Visually stunning, this film packs it's backpack with an imaginative story and stunning visual effects. It's disjointed, mysterious first half is very suitable, but some viewers that prefer the ordinary structure of a film may want to give this one a miss. But remember, there can be only one. The sequels are no good.
- DirectorFrank DarabontStarsTom HanksMichael Clarke DuncanDavid MorseA tale set on death row, where gentle giant John Coffey possesses the mysterious power to heal people's ailments. When the lead guard, Paul Edgecombe, recognizes John's gift, he tries to help stave off the condemned man's execution.Everything's perfect in it.
- DirectorJ. Gunnis DavisJ.P. McGowanRobert G. VignolaStarsHelen HolmesHelen GibsonJ.P. McGowanHelen, informed of the danger which menaces an excursion train because another engine on the same track is running wild, mounts a motorcycle and speeds down the track to warn the passengers of their imminent peril.Howdy, folks, I'm back again and I'll be rantin' on again over my love of movies longer than 2.5 hours. But, see as there are still some movies for you to look at, no rantin' be coming.
- DirectorRichard FleischerStarsRichard AttenboroughJudy GeesonJohn HurtWhat happened to the women at 10 Rillington Place? The story of British serial killer John Christie, who committed most or all of his crimes in the titular terraced house, and the miscarriage of justice involving Timothy Evans.British drama about the serial killer John Christie. Movies about serial killers are very interesting, mostly because we get the perspective that we forbid ourselves to see, and we forbid ourselves to admit that the murderers were humans as well as the suffering victims the murderer brutally killed. Starring Richard Attenborough and John Hurt, this is a film that may be of your interest.
- DirectorWes CravenStarsSandra PeabodyLucy GranthamDavid HessTwo teenage girls heading to a rock concert for one's birthday try to score marijuana in the city, where they are kidnapped and brutalized by a gang of psychopathic convicts.I watched a disturbing movie once, and I was shocked at how it was able to truly manipulate my feelings. So, ever since then I have been looking for the most disturbing films of all time, and this came up. A Wes Craven film, one that Roger Ebert rated 3.5/4 stars. I will definitely be watching this if I get the chance.
- StarsTim Pigott-SmithGeraldine JamesWendy MorganThe sweeping drama about the ruling and ruled classes of WWII India, trying amidst the turmoil to come to terms with the drastic changes taking place around them, knowing that their lives will never be the same again.Lots consider period dramas to be boring, but I actually like them quite a lot, which is why I thought this looked good.
- StarsDerek JacobiJohn HurtSiân PhillipsThe personal and governmental affairs of the Julio-Claudian dynasty at the beginning of the Roman Empire, as recalled by one of its rulers.Again, because it's a period drama, but also because Derek Jacobi is said to give an absolutely splendid performance in this.
- StarsMarita BreuerRüdiger WeigangKurt WagnerThe village of Schabbach experiences the shifting fortunes of Germany from 1919 to 1982.(FOR 1,2,3 AND 4) It's difficult to explain why I like the look of this. Sometimes, we don't need reason.
- StarsHenry ArnoldSalome KammerPeter SchneiderThe village Schabbach experiences Germany's triumphs and tragedies from 1989 to 2000.
- DirectorEdgar ReitzStarsJan Dieter SchneiderAntonia BillMaximilian ScheidtJakob longs for a new life for himself and his troubled family in Brazil.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsTobey MaguireKirsten DunstWillem DafoeAfter being bitten by a genetically-modified spider, a shy teenager gains spider-like abilities that he uses to fight injustice as a masked superhero and face a vengeful enemy.Tobey Maguire has so far been the best portrayal of Spider Man in film. A controversial opinion, sure, especially since Tom Holland has been roaming around the MCU. This film is accurate to the source material and has similar imagery of the comic books it was based upon because of the cinematography and costume design. Sam Raimi put in his usual dose of cheesiness in the villain, and overall, it's a very good film with raw emotion.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsTobey MaguireKirsten DunstAlfred MolinaPeter Parker is beset with troubles in his failing personal life as he battles a former brilliant scientist named Otto Octavius.Resembling it's source material, this film has more emotion than the first one and admits the fact that Spiderman, despite his web-slinging powers, is a human being with feelings. His personal life is as important as his superhero one. It's a good film with brilliant visuals and some of the most iconic scenes in film history.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsTobey MaguireKirsten DunstTopher GraceA strange black entity from another world bonds with Peter Parker and causes inner turmoil as he contends with new villains, temptations, and revenge.Actually highly underrated. The Sandman scenes were done well and the main story was done well too, with Spiderman's dark side blooming out and onto his skin, and he doesn't want to get rid of the dark. Visually fascinating and delivered with great performances and true emotion, this is an underrated film that has both humour and grief, and is a lot better than you were led to believe.
- DirectorJerzy AntczakStarsJadwiga BaranskaJerzy BinczyckiEmir BuczackiAn epic saga of the Niechcic family, told from a woman's perspective. In 1914 in the war-torn Kaliniec, Barbara Niechcic remembers her youthful love, marriage hardships, family life in the countryside and finally her husband's death.I love family sagas, and I love movies that break the boundaries of the 2.5 hour long mark. This is a combination of the both of them, which is why this film looks like it'll be a masterpiece.
- DirectorJean-Luc GodardStarsJean-Paul BelmondoJean SebergVan DoudeA small-time crook, hunted by the authorities for a car theft and the murder a police officer, attempts to persuade a hip American journalism student to run away with him to Italy.Jean Luc Godard's film is a revolutionary piece in film history where they break the editing boundaries of film and intentionally make the film disjointed, cutting at the wrong times to the wrong places and wrong people. I haven't seen this, but it's near the top of my "want to watch" list.
- DirectorJonathan GlazerStarsScarlett JohanssonJeremy McWilliamsLynsey Taylor MackayA mysterious young woman seduces lonely men in the evening hours in Scotland. However, events lead her to begin a process of self-discovery.It's an artsy film, so it's not for everyone. But for the people who do like artsy films, you'll find an atmospheric, surreal movie that will swallow your soul.
- StarsScott GrimesDamian LewisRon LivingstonThe story of Easy Company of the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division and their mission in World War II Europe, from Operation Overlord to V-J Day.The 9.5/10 rating on iMDB was enough for me to give it a look. This miniseries is a war one starring Scott Grimes and Damian Lewis. Critics call it hauntingly realistic and with an accurate portrayal of the horrors of the war. I'm interested in war films, and I'm also especially interested in films with incredibly high ratings. This film is one that looks very good, and is one I'll be watching if I get the chance soon.
- StarsArtur BarcisOlgierd LukaszewiczOlaf LubaszenkoTen television drama films, each one based on one of the Ten Commandments. This has incredibly good reviews, an interesting storyline and Krzysztof Kieslowski at the director's chair.
- DirectorBertrand TavernierStarsDexter GordonFrançois CluzetGabrielle HakerA troubled, but talented musician flees the US to escape his problems, finding refuge and support in Paris.Jazz is one of my favourite music genres, so I was looking through some films about jazz and I stumbled over this one. Dexter Gordon, 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, filled with a jazzy soundtrack to swing up the film...it won an Oscar and got incredible praise, with some calling it one of the best jazz movies of all time.
- StarsSigourney WeaverDavid AttenboroughNikolay DrozdovA documentary series on the wildlife found on Earth. Each episode covers a different habitat: deserts, mountains, deep oceans, shallow seas, forests, caves, polar regions, fresh water, plains and jungles. Narrated by David Attenborough. The cinematography, narration and information is outstanding and is at it's best here compared to other documentaries of this type. Nature is made as a visually beautiful being because of the careful camera pans, audio equipment and patient editing.
- StarsDavid AttenboroughChadden HunterGordon BuchananDavid Attenborough returns with a new wildlife documentary that shows life in a variety of habitats.Same as original.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsAsa ButterfieldChloë Grace MoretzChristopher LeeIn 1931 Paris, an orphan living in the walls of a train station gets wrapped up in a mystery involving his late father and an automaton.Visually stunning Martin Scorsese film about films. Set in the 1930's, this references a lot of films of it's time and captures the magic itself of the film's spirit into itself, understands it, and let's it loose through the long streets of movies with the roads of nostalgia. No need to spoil anymore...go watch it for yourself. It introduced me to a lot of films worthy of seeing.
- DirectorTom MooreStarsSissy SpacekAnne BancroftEd BerkeA mother and daughter spend a night together after the daughter reveals that she will kill herself by the end of it.This movie is meant to be an emotional one about a depressed woman who happens to be epileptic. Depression is a topic I'm highly interested in, and when it's handled in film I usually take great interest in seeing how well it is handled. But imagine, just for a moment, how many limitations you'd have if you had a disorder of any kind...imagine how much pressure you'd wake up to every morning.
- DirectorLav DiazStarsPiolo PascualJohn Lloyd CruzHazel OrencioThe search for the body of Andres Bonifacio.Lav Diaz, the golden goose of movies over the 2.5 hour mark! This is a surreal, mysterious 9 hour long artsy film with long takes, mysterious cinematography and perfect editing. I loved this film, and I think you will too, as the film is hypnotizing with it's dark, blackening atmosphere and it's exhausting yet interesting trod; an absolute masterpiece.
- DirectorRiki OkamuraStarsAsae ÔnishiKazuko KatôKaori Torii'1 Litre of Tears' is a Japanese movie mainly based on a published version of Diary.Japanese drama movie about a woman's life, her hardships, her grief, her happiness and her success, all told in her diary. I haven't seen this, but I look forward to seeing this, as I was reading a review that stated, "This is the movie which has changed how I look at life." If a movie can change you, then it is obviously very special. I'll have to give this a watch one day, and the fact that the movie is set in a diary's perspective is very interesting, and is one I'm very interested in.
- DirectorEon-hie LeeStarsLim Soo-jungKim Rae-wonLee Mi-sookMi-na, a high school student living alone with her mother, dreams of having the perfect boyfriend. But can any man hope to live up to her image of the ideal partner?Korean melodrama with really good reviews. An iMDB reviewer calls it subtle, yet extremely effective. That one review alone made me want to see this.
- DirectorCharles Taze RussellThe Photo-Drama of Creation, is a four-part Christian film produced by the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania. The film presents the Bible's account of God's plan from the creation of the earth through to the end of the 1,000 year reign of Christ.A vintage religious movie longer than 2.5 hours long, made in 1914, and a hundred years later catching the interest of someone because of it's vast, great length. I'm also interested in biblical epics, which is why I decided that I wanted to watch this.
- DirectorJean-Pierre MelvilleStarsAlain DelonBourvilGian Maria VolontèAfter leaving prison, master thief Corey crosses paths with a notorious escapee and an alcoholic former policeman. The trio proceed to plot an elaborate heist.Artsy film with incredibly good reviews, with a heist scene without dialogue that goes for more than twenty minutes and incredible cinematography. It's supposed to be a real treat, and I really want to see this because of the heist scene, cinematography and brilliant reviews, and also because it's directed by Jean-Pierre Melville, a really famous and well known director that's said to be one of the best.
- DirectorEzra EdelmanStarsKareem Abdul-JabbarMike AlbaneseMuhammad AliA chronicle of the rise and fall of O.J. Simpson, whose high-profile murder trial exposed the extent of American racial tensions, revealing a fractured and divided nation.Film that goes past the 2.5 hour long mark about OJ Simpson with outstanding reviews. Winning an Oscar, this film has surpassed almost all expectations of the critics, with Rotten Tomatoes critics consensus stating that, " O.J.: Made in America paints a balanced and thorough portrait of the American dream juxtaposed with tragedy and executed with power and skill." OJ Simpson's case has remained very controversial, and is very ideal for a film like this. I wish I could see this someday.
- DirectorBéla TarrStarsMihály VigPutyi HorváthLászló feLugossyOn the eve of a large payment, residents of a collapsing collective farm see their plans turn into desolation when they discover that Irimiás, a former co-worker who they thought was dead, is returning to the community. You heard it folks; another movie that goes past the 2.5 hour long mark (we're going to have a bit of those sometimes). With a dark atmosphere, picture-perfect cinematography, long takes and vast length, this surreal film was awarded with praise from critics, with Dennis Schwartz calling it "a fascinating seven-hour long black comedy in entropy." I think, out of all of the movies over the 2.5 hour long mark, this one interests me the most; I'd pay all my money to see this.
- DirectorLav DiazStarsAngeli BayaniPerry DizonRoeder CamanagThree people engage in a strange therapy to get away from their agonies.Lav Diaz is here again, directing a movie that I want to see called Melancholia (,do not confuse this for Lars Von Triers masterpiece,) that goes past the 2.5 hour long mark. With long takes and a surreal nature to it, this piece of contemplative cinema explores grief with it's cinematography, lighting and atmosphere.
- DirectorAndrei TarkovskyStarsAnatoliy SolonitsynIvan LapikovNikolay GrinkoThe life, times and afflictions of the fifteenth-century Russian iconographer St. Andrei Rublev.Andrei Tarkovsky, highly regarded in film history for his film Solaris, directs this film that goes over the 2.5 hour long mark that is said to contain itself with long takes, beautiful cinematography and emotional depth. This is a film I want to see because of that.
- DirectorHans-Jürgen SyberbergStarsHeinz SchubertPeter KernHellmut LangeDirector Hans-Jurgen Syberberg examines the rise and fall of the Third Reich in this brooding seven-hour masterpiece, which incorporates puppetry, rear-screen projection, and a Wagnerian score into a singular epic vision. Syberberg, who grew up under Nazi tyranny, ruminates on good and evil and the rest of humanity's complicity in the horrors of the holocaust.7 hour long film about Adolf Hitler, this caught my interest because of it's length and the fact that it's a German perspective on the war. I had a look at some of the imagery for this, and I found the cinematography to look stunning. So, I've wanted to watch this for a while now, mostly because it's a long film and the fact that Adolf Hitler is portrayed in this film by the hands of a German director.
- DirectorSergey BondarchukStarsLyudmila SavelevaVyacheslav TikhonovSergey BondarchukThe Russian aristocracy prepares for the French invasion on the eve of 1812.Need I explain this? 1966's War And Peace, which I plan on seeing, is said to be a dramatic epic that is hailed to have one of the best battle scenes in movies of all time. Because of the expensive budget they needed, the countries government had to fund this film in order for them to get 100,000,000$. Today, that money would be around 800,000,000$. No CGI, either! A long, outstanding epic with incredible reviews, I'd absolutely love to see this, if only it was easier to find...and for God's sake, look how good that poster is! Because of the seven hour length, the film won't feel crammed either, it will flow easily and contain heaps without feeling overstuffed.
- DirectorJean-Pierre MelvilleStarsAlain DelonFrançois PérierNathalie DelonAfter professional hitman Jef Costello is seen by witnesses his efforts to provide himself an alibi drive him further into a corner.I mostly want to see this because it's directed by Jean-Pierre Melville, the same director of Le Cercle Rouge, but also because it's an artsy film with incredible reviews. The plot is also highly compelling, and the critics say it has incredible cinematography with subtle depth. I decided I'd better not give myself any spoilers for this, as it sounded too much of a treat already.
- DirectorManoel de OliveiraStarsLuís Miguel CintraPatricia BarzykAnne ConsignyDuring the century of the Spanish Gold, Doña Prouhèze, wife of a nobleman, deeply loves Don Rodrigo, who is forced to leave Spain and go to America. Meanwhile Prouhèze is sent to Africa to rule the city of Mogador. Ten years later Rodrigo leaves America and travels to Africa in search of Prouhèze to find out that she died and eventually meeting her daughter.Costume drama over 2.5 hours.
- DirectorSam MendesStarsKevin SpaceyAnnette BeningThora BirchA sexually frustrated suburban father has a mid-life crisis after becoming infatuated with his daughter's best friend.First off, the film got magnificent praise and won Best Picture and Best Cinematography in 2000. I have a really high interest in good cinematography, and the rave reviews just drew me in even more. Apparently, straight from the trivia page, Sam Mendes designed the two girls' looks to change over the course of the film to emphasize their "shifting perceptions" of themselves. Talented directors try new things in film like that, and as this is in the iMDB Top 250 I'd like to give this a look, and you may too.
- DirectorIngmar BergmanStarsIngrid ThulinGunnar BjörnstrandGunnel LindblomA small-town priest struggles with his faith. After watching Hour Of The Wolf, I just had to look through some of the directors filmography, and I found this. The plot sounded interesting; a Priest living life but struggling with his faith. If a Priest struggles with his faith, he will be questioning himself countless through the weeks and months over whether or not what he's believing is true. The film has great reviews, it has Max Von Sydow in it, it's directed by Ingmar Bergman...I thought it sounded quite good.
- DirectorMike NewellStarsHugh GrantAndie MacDowellJames FleetOver the course of five social occasions, a committed bachelor must consider the notion that he may have discovered love.I'm not usually a fan of the romantic comedy fare, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one despite it's genre. It was an original film that didn't follow the formula of the romantic comedy genre and instead went it's own way, with a good blended mix of comedy and drama. The cinematography is suitable, the editing flows the film together and the pacing remains perfect; I'm considering if I should watch Notting Hill, but I'm worried it may just be a normal romantic comedy unlike this film.
- DirectorMasaharu TakeStarsSakura AndôHirofumi AraiYôzaburô ItôA 32-year-old woman living with her parents meets a boxer and finally starts a life.I haven't seen it, but I thought it looked good because of it's storyline. I think it's mostly the part when she charges out of the house and the boxing subplot that interests me the most, and the fact that it's a Japanese movie. They usually contain a lot of symbolic images in their movies which are usually interesting and thought-provoking, making you wonder what they mean in the context of the film.
- StarsDonald PleasenceJanet MawNigel HawthorneWhen a crusade against the Church of England's practice of self-enrichment misfires, scandal taints the cozy community of Barchester when their local church becomes the object of a scathing, investigative report. For starters, Donald Pleasance and Alan Rickman are in this. I think I'm mostly interested in this though because of the fact that it's a period drama.
- StarsRobert PowellOlivia HusseyLaurence OlivierBeginning before the Nativity and extending through the Crucifixion and Resurrection, this mini-series brings to life all of the sweeping drama in the life of Jesus, as told by the Gospels. This is supposed to be really good.
- StarsChristian RodeKurt ConradiBrigitte KarnerBased on the book by Kirst, this is the story of the investigation concerning the death of a young lieutenant at a German school for officers. The story takes place in the last year of WW2 and shows the intrigue and machinations between men and "wolves".World War II miniseries set in the German perspective!
- DirectorManoel de OliveiraStarsLuís Miguel CintraDiogo DóriaMiguel GuilhermeEpisodes from entire military history of Portugal are told through flashbacks as a professorish soldier recounts them while marching through a Portuguese African colony in 1973. He easily draws his comrades into philosophical musings, and the little contingent suffers badly at the hands of the local military opposition. An iMDB user called carlosbalula wrote a review for this film. He said that, "It's a very profund film, and I consider it a one of the greatest achievements of the Portuguese modern cinema." One of the greatest, folks. This is also a movie about Portuguese politics in 1973, the perspective on it and the effects. But that one review makes me think that it would be a very carefully constructed film.
- DirectorMarco Tullio GiordanaStarsLuigi Lo CascioAlessio BoniJasmine TrincaAn Italian epic that follows the lives of two brothers from the 1960s to the 2000s.It's Italian, it's got extremely good reviews, it's said to have brilliant cinematography, it's more than 2.5 hours long...it sounds like an absolutely brilliant epic of a film. My expectations for this film are high up in the sky, especially considering the fact that it's longer than 2.5 hours long. The plot reads: an Italian epic that follows the lives of two brothers, from the 1960s to the 2000s. I presume a lot of political background will be happening, and it will be interesting to hear the perspective of brothers viewing the world as it was in the past, especially in a 6 hour long film where they have enough space to fill in everything they need to include in the experience.
- DirectorRobert EnricoRichard T. HeffronStarsKlaus Maria BrandauerJane SeymourFrançois CluzetA chronicle of the French Revolution from the calling of the Etats General in 1789 until the end of the Jacobin Terror in 1794.The French Revolution was the topic of Les Miserables and a whole lot of other stories because it was a very controversial and interesting piece of history. This is another film that goes over the 2.5 hour long mark, so it has enough room to contain all that we need to know of the story and it's characters. I'm looking forward to seeing this because it's a 6 hour long epic about one of the most interesting topics, the French Revolution, and is created by the jolly old France itself. A very controversial topic indeed, one that if a film handles well is considered by me to be a masterpiece.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsJack NicholsonShelley DuvallDanny LloydA family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future. One of my favourite movies, mostly because of the bizarre story, eerie atmosphere, compelling cinematography and brilliant performances by the entire cast. Those may sound like small things, but they all add up to an enormous concluded chill down our spines, but an irresistible chill it is, as even a non-horror fan would be able to enjoy this. You can definitely see Stanley Kubricks talent shine through this, and that although this surrealistic film is not accurate to it's source material, it's still pretty damn good.
- DirectorIngmar BergmanStarsBibi AnderssonLiv UllmannMargaretha KrookA nurse is put in charge of a mute actress and finds that their personae are melding together.Persona is another film directed by Ingmar Bergman, which is why I had a look at this. But what really caught my interest was the storyline: a nurse is put in charge of a mute actress and finds that their personas are melding together. That sounds brilliant! This is said to have extraordinary cinematography, eerie dream sequences and splendid acting. It is also called an "experimental film," a genre I'm interested in at the moment along with films over 2.5 hours long and period dramas, mostly because "experimental films" think out of the square and don't use cliches seen in your normal film and sometimes break the normal movie structure. It has incredible reviews, an interesting storyline, and because it's directed my Mr Bergman, I really wanted to give this a watch, especially with the most helpful review on iMDB saying, "A very powerful personal experience."
- DirectorLuchino ViscontiStarsClara CalamaiMassimo GirottiDhia CristianiGino, a drifter, begins an affair with inn-owner Giovanna, and they plan to get rid of her older husband.Another Italian film that I am wanting to see because of it being a vintage film and the fact that the storyline sounded really interesting, as well as the good reviews. What made me look at this though is the fact that this is directed by Luchino Visconti, the director of another good-looking film called La Terra Trema.
- DirectorLav DiazStarsHazel OrencioKristine KintanaNoel Sto. DomingoIn a rural area, a father forces his daughter into prostitution. Somewhere else, two men embark on a quest for a buried treasure.Lav Diaz film about a father who forces his daughter into prostitution. It actually sounded quite interesting, considering the film is 6 hours long, so I'm looking forward to seeing this because I am expecting Lav Diaz's excellent, grainy cinematography and the fact that I want to know how the story is handled in a 6 hour long film. However, that's not the only storyline of the film: somewhere else, two men embark on a quest for treasure. Although that plot doesn't interest me as much as the prostitute one, it sounds interesting enough to accompany a 6 hour long film.
- DirectorLav DiazStarsPerry DizonAngel AquinoBart GuingonaAn artist struggles to finish his work. A storyline about a cult plays in his head. Fundamentalism will destroy the world. The artist destroys his muse in the process. He redeems her in the end.Another Lav Diaz film that I plan on seeing because it's longer than 2.5 hours long, and the fact that it has such an melancholic poster!
- DirectorLouis FeuilladeStarsMusidoraÉdouard MathéMarcel LévesqueAn intrepid reporter and his loyal friend battle a bizarre secret society of criminals known as The Vampires.Interesting Louis Feuillade serial about a society of criminals that call themselves The Vampires. This film is really well known to those who know their film history, and a spin-off was made in 1996 called Irma Vep. I want to see this because of the vintage feel I presume it will have and the fact that it is a mystery with vampires in it.
- DirectorLuchino ViscontiStarsFarley GrangerAlida ValliMassimo GirottiAn Italian Countess is allied with Nationalists during the Italian-Austrian war of unification. However, she risks betraying their cause when she falls in love with an Austrian lieutenant. Why does this look good? It's directed by Luchino Visconti who has directed some other hot-looking films, it's a melodramatic period drama, it's got a 4/4 from Roger Ebert, it's Italian, it's said to have brilliant cinematography...the only thing it's missed out on is the fact that it isn't more than 2.5 hours long!
- StarsHelmut HellstorffVyacheslav TikhonovArtyom KarapetyanThe battle of Moscow was the first major defeat of German Wehrmacht in the Second World War. The film is dedicated to some fighting events that took place in the USSR after Hitler's conquest of western Europe.I barely know anything about this film, but I really want to see it because it's longer than 2.5 hours long and the fact that it's about the Battle Of Moscow, one of the most interesting wars in the world.
- DirectorChristine EdzardStarsDerek JacobiAlec GuinnessJoan GreenwoodArthur returns to London after working abroad for many years with his now deceased father. Almost at once he becomes involved in the problems of his mother's seamstress Amy and of her father residing in the Marshalsea debtors' prison.I've seen this. It's a good little period drama with a quiet, subtle performance by Derek Jacobi and a length longer than 2.5 hours. It's editing was good, and the source material was accurately portrayed onscreen. To be honest, though, it wasn't as good as I thought it would of been.
- DirectorRenato CastellaniStarsAnna MagnaniGiulietta MasinaCristina GaioniA harsh study about the grim realities of life in a female prison environment. The story concerns a young girl sent to prison who experiences the entire prison subculture. The inmates she befriends vary from tough dangerous dames to smaller submissive women who are totally lost in prison life. What interests me in this film is the storyline which concerns a young girl who goes to prison and experiences the prison subculture. There have been numerous movies about female prisons, but most have been trashy exploitation films which can only be enjoyed in a bad sense. This is also directed by Renato Castellani, who directed another interesting looking film called Romeo And Juliet in 1954.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsMorgan FreemanBrad PittKevin SpaceyTwo detectives, a rookie and a veteran, hunt a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as his motives. In order not to spoil this, I will say that it is a very good yet dark neo-noir that should be on your watchlist right this minute.
- DirectorSukumarSukumarZeb WaltersStarsMahesh BabuKriti SanonNassarA rock star must overcome his psychological inhibitions to seek revenge for his parents' death. This action movie is said by critics to be completely different from the normal Tollywood action fare, with people saying that it contains intelligence and contains common sense that they say is rare in modern Tollywood filmography, which is why I want to see this. Any film that thinks out of the square deserves my attention, in my opinion, because boundaries always seem to ruin movies. People tell you, "Oh no, you're film has to be like all the others," and luckily for us directors don't listen to those people. This also interests me because it's longer than 2.5 hours long.
- DirectorDuncan BridgemanJamie CattoStarsAsha BhosleWhirimako BlackTim BoothJamie Catto and Duncan Bridgeman travelled for 7 months through all 5 continents, and recorded in over 50 locations to create the most inspiring film and album they could imagine. Their mission was not only to gather insights on the huge universal themes of life from the most inspiring and illuminating people they could find, but also to seek out the cream of the world's musicians and compose immense multi-layered music with them. It's said to have really good time lapse photography, and the topic of it sounds really good, with it being about some people working on making the most inspiring film available. Also, it is said to be incredibly beautiful by critics because of the incredible cinematography. One iMDB user says that it is "an experience that transcends our ego concerns and speaks to the heart." Visually stunning movies are usually a favourite of mine, and this sounds really good.
- DirectorDaniel GrouStarsClaude LegaultRobert NaylorEugénie BeaudryTommy, 10 years old, is well known by Social Services. He is considered a danger to society. Gilles, his guardian at this halfway house, sees potential for redemption in this kid driven by violence.A new drama film with a good storyline. This is one I have not seen, but because of the storyline, I was hooked and wanted to see this. A boy called Tommy is considered a danger to society and Gilles, his guardian, sees potential for redemption in this kid driven by violence. Mentally challenged children are sometimes topics toyed with by the hands of sentimental film directors, but this actually looks quite good. It isn't American either, it's Canadian with characters that speak Français. So, I'm looking forward to seeing this a lot.
- CreatorJohn WilderStarsRaymond BurrBarbara CarreraRichard ChamberlainThe economic and cultural growth of Colorado spanning two centuries from the mid 1700s to the late 1970s.20 hour long miniseries about the evolution of a town spanning from the 1700s to the 1900s. The plot alone sounds interesting, and the length promises us a story to tell.
- DirectorMatt ReevesStarsMike VogelJessica LucasLizzy CaplanA group of friends venture deep into the streets of New York on a rescue mission during a rampaging monster attack.Found footage film about monsters attacking New York City. It also has good reviews, and I'm looking forward to seeing the special effects for the monsters in found footage style. It's said to be a really intense film, but one big reason I want to watch it is because some people are yelling about it being "slow-starting." Usually when a blockbuster like this is called slow-starting it's just because it develops the main characters at the start, so I'm looking forward to seeing if they do and how they will react when the monsters begin their havoc in the streets.
- DirectorDan TrachtenbergStarsJohn GoodmanMary Elizabeth WinsteadJohn Gallagher Jr.A young woman is held in an underground bunker by a man who insists that a hostile event has left the surface of the Earth uninhabitable.Because the first one looks good, and also because it has John Goodman in it. Oh, and the trailer was awesome.
- StarsF. Murray AbrahamKeith CarradinePatricia ChildressIn this prequel to "Lonesome Dove", two young men join the Texas Rangers unit that's on a mission to annex Santa Fe.It's the prequel to a miniseries I like the look of, and it has F. Murray Abraham in it.
- StarsRobert DuvallTommy Lee JonesDanny GloverTwo former Texas Rangers renew their spirit of adventure as they and several other residents of a small Texas town join a cattle drive to the Montana Territory.Starting off, this is a Western starring Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones and Diane Lane and the fact it's hailed to be one of the best of the Western genre is enough to get the average person interested. It won two Golden Globes and is said to have great performances from the lead actors as well. I haven't seen this, but if that were true, then I'd be highly satisfied.
- DirectorBrad FurmanStarsBryan CranstonJohn LeguizamoDiane KrugerA U.S. Customs official uncovers a money laundering scheme involving Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar.True story movie I've seen starring Bryan Cranston. Bryan Cranston is the best part of this film, giving a realistic and extremely believable performance without making anything over-the-top. The film itself is just plain good mostly because of it's interesting true story, good cinematography and fancy editing but his performance is the cake's icing and is one of the best I've seen in a while.
- DirectorLuchino ViscontiStarsAlain DelonRenato SalvatoriAnnie GirardotHaving recently been uprooted to Milan, Rocco and his four brothers each look for a new way in life when a prostitute comes between Rocco and his brother Simone.Italian neorealism melodrama that I want to see because of it's great reviews, it's genre (neorealism) and the fact that people analyze this film. If a lot of people analyze a film, it must be because it has a lot of depth and meaning, so I'm looking forward to watching this to see if I can catch anything. The plot sounds interesting: Simone meets Nadia, a prostitute, and they have a stormy affair. Then Rocco, after finishing his military service, begins a relationship with her. A bitter feud ensues between the two brothers, which will lead as far as murder...the film studies of this make it even the more intriguing, and the interesting storyline doesn't help tone down that interest.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsLiam NeesonRalph FiennesBen KingsleyIn German-occupied Poland during World War II, industrialist Oskar Schindler gradually becomes concerned for his Jewish workforce after witnessing their persecution by the Nazis. It's a favourite for a reason. This film uses some of the best cinematography and use of colour, acting, pacing and editing of all time...it's one of the only movies I think isn't too long or too short.
- DirectorEwald André DupontStarsEmil JanningsMaly DelschaftLya De PuttiPrologue: The murderer "Boss" Huller - after having spent ten years in prison - breaks his silence to tell the warden his story. "Boss", a former trapeze artist, and his wife own a cheap side-show that displays ''erotic sensations''. But he longs for his former glamorous life in the circus. When he meets the orphan Berta-Marie, he falls under her spell and leaves his wife and young son behind. He makes Berta-Marie his partner in a new trapeze number. One day, the famous trapeze artist Artinelli takes note of them and engages them for his trapeze show in Berlin. Their salto mortale becomes an immediate sensation. Calculatedly and cold, Artinelli seduces Berta-Marie and destroys "Boss'" happiness.I want to see this film mostly because of the fact that it's vintage but the interest of the plot of this film is a big one for me too, which is about a sexual love triangle and the emotions that come with it. The film is supposed to be really good, and also the fact that it's set in a circus is interesting me as well. If a movie captures the spirit of a circus, then it's a very good one indeed.
- StarsDouglas HodgeJuliet AubreyTrevyn McDowellMiddlemarch is a story of provincial life on the brink of momentous change and a deeply moving saga about a group of people striving to give meaning and value to their lives during the Industrial Revolution.I'd like to see this just because it's in a genre I'm interested in, which is period drama.
- DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsGary OldmanWinona RyderAnthony HopkinsThe centuries old vampire Count Dracula comes to England to seduce his barrister Jonathan Harker's fiancée Mina Murray and inflict havoc in the foreign land.I absolutely love this film. It's the second best Dracula film in film history in my opinion, simply because of the outstanding performances, chilling atmosphere, terrifying musical score and perfect editing and pacing. There's a reason it won 3 Oscars, you know, and it comes as no surprise that Coppola directed this!
- DirectorAndrei TarkovskyStarsNatalya BondarchukDonatas BanionisJüri JärvetA psychologist is sent to a station orbiting a distant planet in order to discover what has caused the crew to go insane.Film over 2.5 hours long that is considered to be a piece of "contemplative cinema," whatever that means. I'm interested in this film, as well as I'm interested in the director's other film called Andrei Rublev, simply because it's said to have long takes and beautiful cinematography. I'm also interested in this, though, because I want to see how this compares to 2001; they are both set in space and both contain long takes and beautiful cinematography, so it'll be fun to compare the two.
- DirectorSrdjan SpasojevicStarsSrdjan 'Zika' TodorovicSergej TrifunovicJelena GavrilovicAn aging porn star agrees to participate in an "art film" in order to make a clean break from the business, only to discover that he has been drafted into making a pedophilia and necrophilia themed snuff film. This is a controversial pick, I know, and some people in the comments are going to call me a sex pervert because I added this, but actually I added this in because of my interest of film's manipulating my feelings, like what I said in The Last House On The Left. You know, I never knew I could have the feeling that actually forbidded me from seeing a film because I thought it would be dangerous. I have that feeling with this film. Judging by all the reviews, I'd say that this is a true horror film; it's one to terrify you, not to make you laugh. It does what a horror film is supposed to do.
- DirectorJean-Luc GodardStarsHéloïse GodetKamel AbdelliRichard ChevallierA silent, surreal parallel between a couple and a dog.I'm interested in this film because it's an artsy film directed by Jean-Luc Godard that is said to have really good cinematography and a dream-like atmosphere. I watched the trailer for this, and I have to say, it looks very good and the low iMDB rating won't tempt me not to see it. It'll be good to see what this film is like however mostly because it's directed by Jean-Luc Godard, who directed numerous films before this one that got incredible feedback.
