Watching a TV-show is a time consuming commitment. Especially when you have a sh*t-ton of movies you also have to watch. But here are some TV-shows that are currently on my watchlist.

1. The Knick (2014–2015)

TV-MA | 58 min | Drama, History

A look at the professional and personal lives of the staff at New York's Knickerbocker Hospital during the early part of the twentieth century.

Stars: Clive Owen, André Holland, Jeremy Bobb, Juliet Rylance

Votes: 52,572

Great show with nuanced characters and a great score. I especially loved episode 7 of season 1. It's definitely not a feel good show, but certainly worth your time. And the directing by Steven Soderbergh is excellent.

2. The Kingdom (1994–2022)

TV-MA | 60 min | Comedy, Drama, Fantasy

Doctors at an ultramodern hospital in Denmark become convinced, by way of weird, inexplicable happenings, that the place is haunted.

Stars: Ernst-Hugo Järegård, Kirsten Rolffes, Ghita Nørby, Søren Pilmark

Votes: 20,360 | Gross: $0.09M

All and all I enjoyed this. I would definitely watch it again. However, I felt that too much time was spent on nothing. I don't know if that kind of pacing and story was intentional by Von Trier, I feel like it may have been, but if that's the case then it's nothing other than a missed opportunity. The main story, especially in the second season, is so overshadowed by all these side stories that leads nowhere to the point where the upsetting ending is completely uncalled for. It's almost more upsetting than the ending of the original Twin Peaks. Nothing happens in the second season until like the last 20 mintes of the final episode where the plot finally start getting some kind of payoff and then it just ends. Why Lars? Why did you pace the show like this? Also, why did you have to step into the frame and talk about how great the show is at the end of every episode? That was just so cringe worthy. It felt really pretentious and self masturbatory to me. I hated it. I also kinda wished that the down syndrome dishwashers had some kind of connection to the overall story instead of just being like a premonition for the audience. It's like if the Red Room stuff in Twin Peaks had nothing to do with any of the characters. Like if suddenly it just cut to Michael J. Anderson and Carel Struycken having a typical Red Room conversation and then cut back to the fish in the percolator.

It may sound as if I hated this show, but the truth is I kinda loved it. I loved the tone, I loved the way it was shot, I loved the score and the ambient noises. The main story with Drusse was extremely intriguing. The first season is almost exceptional. I highly recommend it.

3. Garth Marenghi's Darkplace (2004)

TV-MA | 24 min | Comedy, Fantasy, Horror

This parody series is an unearthed 80s horror/drama, complete with poor production values, awful dialogue and hilarious violence. The series is set in a Hospital in Romford, which is situated over the gates of Hell.

Stars: Richard Ayoade, Matt Berry, Matthew Holness, Alice Lowe

Votes: 20,159

Only felt appropriate to watch this after The Kingdom. This is pretty much perfect. For what it's going for I would say it's flawless. I mean if the humour isn't in your taste you'll be inclined to disagree with me. However the humour was right up my alley and the comedy has so much depth. I could watch this again and notice several jokes I didn't notice the first time. I also love this team of people. I love Richard Ayoade, I love Matt Berry, I love Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding who both show up. Paul King was also involved, who of course directed every episode of The Mighty Boosh (my favourite comedy show of all time). Having just seen The Kingdom, though, I can't escape the thought that this is making fun of it to an extent.

4. Mindhunter (2017–2019)

TV-MA | 60 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

In the late 1970s, two FBI agents broaden the realm of criminal science by investigating the psychology behind murder and end up getting too close to real-life monsters.

Stars: Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, Anna Torv, Hannah Gross

Votes: 336,463

First season is phenomenal. First half of the second season is phenomenal. Second half of the second season feels like its own standalone film that abandons most of the things that otherwise makes the show phenomenal.

5. The Name of the Rose (2019)

TV-MA | 60 min | Drama, History, Mystery

In 1327, an enlightened friar and his young apprentice investigate a series of mysterious deaths at an abbey risking the wrath of a powerful Inquisitor. Television adaptation of Umberto Eco's novel 'The Name of the Rose'.

Stars: John Turturro, Rupert Everett, Damian Hardung, Fabrizio Bentivoglio

Votes: 4,462

No. I watched the first episode and I am done already. It was shit. It tried to be like Game of Thrones for some reason. Adso is like 20 years old, which doesn't work. The score was the most generic thing ever. Everything and everyone looked prestine and polished. Contrast all of this to the movie from 1986. They're so far apart from each other quality-wise. I haven't read the book, so this might trying for a more true adaptation. I know that Umberto Eco didn't like the movie, but he's wrong, the movie is brilliant. Since it's only about 2h 15 some of the elements have to be stripped away and I believe that the right elements were for the movie to be perfect narratively. Bernardo Gui doesn't show up until like 1h 20 into the film, but in the pilot episode of the show he is both introduced and his motivations are blatantly established - stripping his character from any mystery or intrigue. The score was in-and-out between the ears, I couldn't remember it 5 minutes after having finished the episode. Whereas in the film it opens up with that mysterious bass, clank noises, haunting cry and cello inserts and it immediately draws you in. The score for the movie is one of the most unique, creepy, disturbing and hauntingly beautiful scores of all time. I'm rating the pilot episode alone, not the show as a whole because I'm never watching any more of it. 1/10

6. Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987–1994)

TV-PG | 45 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

Set almost 100 years after Captain Kirk's 5-year mission, a new generation of Starfleet officers sets off in the U.S.S. Enterprise-D on its own mission to go where no one has gone before.

Stars: Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, Jonathan Frakes, LeVar Burton

Votes: 136,211

Watching Star Trek: The Next Generation has made me realize that I'm an old man at heart. I really like the episodic format of old TV-shows. I could jump right into season 3 of this without missing anything major from the 2 previous seasons. It's the perfect kind of show to watch when bored. I used to only have Buffy the Vampire slayer for that, but now TNG has entered the conversation. I'll most likely check out some of the other Star Trek shows as well when I'm finished here (I'm well into season 6 at the moment).

It's difficult to pick a favorite episode. There are alot of good ones. However, while I love watching it none of the episodes has really moved me or anything. Nevertheless, I've narrowed it down to my 5 favorite episodes so far. They are Captain's Holiday, Clues, Qpid, Disaster and Ship in a Bottle. I like the fun schlocky episodes - less so the serious Klingon stuff and whatnot. With exceptions on both sides of course. I really liked The Best of Both Worlds and I really hated Rascals. But, I seem to have the most fun with episodes that are a little silly - Captain's Holiday is a perfect example of this. Yeah.

7. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993–1999)

TV-PG | 45 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

In the vicinity of the liberated planet of Bajor, the Federation space station Deep Space Nine guards the opening of a stable wormhole to the far side of the galaxy.

Stars: Avery Brooks, Rene Auberjonois, Cirroc Lofton, Alexander Siddig

Votes: 70,850

I'm not sure if I like this or TNG the most. There are good and bad aspects of both shows. With this show you can't just pick any episode of the show and watch it and be fully up to date like you can with TNG. Plenty of them, sure, but this has more of an over-arching storyline to it. The Dominion war is built up for as early as season 1, but it's not until season 4 where things really starts to heat up. I do like this storyline, however I don't like the Bajoran religious crap and there are alot of those kinds of episodes. I love the pilot episode, but from the very start to the very end my mind would often wonder whenever Kai Winn showed up. My eyes rolled so hard every time Kira would push her religious agenda against logic during arguments. Although, my least favorite episodes are the various Ferengi episodes. The only one I really liked was The Magnificent Ferengi. That's mainly due to it not being about their politics and culture, but rather for it being The Magnificent Seven in space. Iggy Pop also added to the enjoyment factor of that episode. An aspect where Deep Space Nine actually trumps TNG is colorful side characters. In TNG you have side characters, but whenever they showed up it was always their episode rather than them just being in the episode. DS9 really had alot of these side characters fleshed out and made them alot more interesting than they needed to be, which is something that I generally adore.

My top 5 episodes are: 5. If Wishes Were Horses 4. Duet 3. Emissary 2. Far Beyond the Stars 1. Civil Defense

8. Star Trek (1966–1969)

TV-PG | 50 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

In the 23rd Century, Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise explore the galaxy and defend the United Federation of Planets.

Stars: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, Nichelle Nichols

Votes: 92,995

I started watching this and I couldn't really get into it. I love TNG and DS9, but this was far too dry for me. It's dry, dull, stiff and the episodes are way too long for my taste. It's not that I have a problem with it being from the 60's because I love the early James Bond movies. I love the Italian action/espionage movies of the era. I don't like the 'people talking in rooms' genre movies of the 50's and 60's and TOS definitely echoed that style of filmmaking for me. I probably watched about 20 episodes and only enjoyed Shore Leave. Watching the show started to feel more like a chore and so I opted out of finishing it. Fatigue may have had something to do with it since I'd plowed through both TNG and DS9 in a few months. I highly doubt that I would thoroughly enjoy it had I not already done that, though. I hate 'boring people talking in rooms' movies unless they're really stupid.

9. Star Trek: Voyager (1995–2001)

TV-PG | 44 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

Pulled to the far side of the galaxy, where the Federation is seventy-five years away at maximum warp speed, a Starfleet ship must cooperate with Maquis rebels to find a way home.

Stars: Kate Mulgrew, Robert Beltran, Roxann Dawson, Robert Duncan McNeill

Votes: 77,401

I liked Voyager alot more than I thought I was going to. It's not as good of a show as TNG or DS9, there's quite alot of inconsistencies in the writing especially. They would often either neglect or ignore cannon for the sake of having a funny line or something. Spoilers ahead. It ended without any real closure. With the story they told you needed like a 10 minute epilogue that Deep Space Nine had. It's not something I really needed for either TNG or DS9, but I needed it for Voyager. I needed that gratifying feeling of "We made it home and everything is fine". It would be allegorical of myself finishing the show. As it is, I almost felt like I got robbed at the end. I still liked the show, though. It really kicked into gear in season 4, basically when Seven of Nine showed up. She ended up being my favorite character. There were still alot of fun episodes before that. Deadlock had a really great premise and honestly a pretty insane conclusion. The Q civil war episode is alot of fun. I really liked the Future's End 2-parter. I have a hard time coming up with a top 5 for this show, though. Instead I have 3 almost interchangable favorites.

1. The Killing Game I & II 2. Waking Moments 3. One

10. The Orville (2017–2022)

TV-14 | 44 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

Set 400 years in the future, the crew of the U.S.S. Orville continue their mission of exploration, navigating both the mysteries of the universe, and the complexities of their own interpersonal relationships.

Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes

Votes: 99,844

I paused going through Enterprise because I wanted to catch up with this new season of The Orville. I grew up with Family Guy and I do have a soft spot for Seth MacFarlane. Alot of jokes aren't that funny, but every so often he catches me off guard with something (often very stupid) that makes me laugh my ass off in a way that like Police Squad would. Most of these moments involved Bortus. I think my favorite joke was the Latchcomb scene. So I had alot of fun watching this - especially the first season. The further you get into the show you'll realize that the jokes are less and less frequent. Culminating in this ongoing season 3 which is just night and day compared to season 1. Detailed thoughts on season 3 can be found on my 2022 list. Season 2 more or less continues the same spirit up until a point. The two-parter is somewhat of a turning point where the jokes slowly going to the wayside. I understand people welcoming that, but I don't come from the same point of view as I think most people who watch this does. I want the dumb jokes, even if they don't always land. Almost every episode has a base in Star Trek, because the show is basically a fan fiction. Identity is pretty much The Best of Both Worlds from TNG. Blood of Patriots is very similar to Past Prologue from DS9. Into the Fold is similar to the Voyager episode when Tuvok is stranded on a strange planet with a bunch of kids (I don't remember what it's called). Primal Urges is both Hollow Pursuits from TNG and Human Error from VOY. I can go on. Should I go on? I won't go on. I don't really have a favorite episode, maybe the one when they trick the battling ambassadors to fall in love with each other. Season 1 in general is my favorite.

11. Star Trek: Enterprise (2001–2005)

TV-PG | 60 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

A century before Captain Kirk's five-year mission, Jonathan Archer captains the United Earth ship Enterprise during the early years of Starfleet, leading up to the Earth-Romulan War and the formation of the Federation.

Stars: Scott Bakula, John Billingsley, Jolene Blalock, Dominic Keating

Votes: 59,143

Man, what a journey it's been to go through all these fucking shows. Enterprise takes me over the finish line since I have no interest in the new Star Trek shows. This is probably the weakest one if you don't count TOS. I know I'm in the minority with that opinion, but it is my opinion. I think the reason for Enterprise being the weakest is that half of the main cast aren't really well defined. Most of the episodes revolve around Archer, T'Pol and Trip. Dr. Phlox is the most charismatic, so even if he doesn't have too many episodes he's still a decent character. However, Travis, Hoshi and Malcolm are pretty much just there - Travis and Hoshi in particular. There are several episodes when they're in just one scene doing nothing. Perhaps it's a bi-product of there only being 4 seasons, but I don't know. They could've been explored way more than they were. My favorite character of the entire show is definitely Commander Shran. All those Andorian episodes were some of the most fun I had watching ENT. The Xindi plot was alot of fun as well - without a doubt my favorite season.

Let's not stand on ceremonies. My 5 favorite episodes are Unexpected, The Andorian Incident, Dead Stop, Rajiin and Proving Ground. No particular order, but these are the definitive favorites. I can't really think of any other one coming close. Yeah.

12. Prehistoric Planet (2022–2023)

TV-PG | 203 min | Documentary, Animation, History

Travel back 66 million years to when majestic dinosaurs and extraordinary creatures roamed the lands, seas, and skies.

Star: David Attenborough

Votes: 10,682

Disappointing. Check out my 2022 list for further elaboration.

13. Star Trek: Lower Decks (2020–2024)

TV-14 | 25 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

The support crew serving on one of Starfleet's least important ships, the U.S.S. Cerritos, have to keep up with their duties, often while the ship is being rocked by a multitude of sci-fi anomalies.

Stars: Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells, Eugene Cordero

Votes: 25,019

It's far from perfect. It has annoying references which only serves the purpose of letting the audience know that the writers have seen Star Trek before. However, the short running time and cartoon formula - standalone episodes - made it feel like the only new Trek show worth checking out. I do like the show overall because of those things. My favorite episode is probably wej Duj. It was fun to see the lower decks on other ships and I look forward to see the Vulcan lady on the Cerritos in season 4. It also has my favorite joke of the show which comes during the epilogue. I also like the Deep Space 9 episode. DS9 is my favorite Trek show, so it was fun to visit there, but the plot genuinely felt like something Quark would do in the real show. Instead of just being referential it felt organic to the character and I appreciated that. Don't have too much more to say about it. It's good ol' light-hearted fun.

Votes: 172,483

I got about 1,5 seasons into it. It's a decent show, but I just sort of lost interest and never continued.

TV-PG | 45 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

Stars: Mira Furlan, Richard Biggs, Stephen Furst, Andreas Katsulas

Votes: 34,637

Slight spoiler for the first and second season: I found it very jarring that the finale of season 1 set up Sinclair as having a far greater purpose to the story than what we initially thought and then in season 2 he is replaced by some other guy. So jarring in fact that I never really recovered from it as I found Sheridan to be alot more bland as a character. Maybe I'll go back to it someday, who knows?
