But Bertram is at the court of the King of France, who is ill, and Helena has a remedy that might cure him and win her the right to marry Bertram. But does Bertram want to marry her?Own. Part of series THREE of the complete BBC collection. Only version of the play I have. Why Helen wants Betram and the efforts and cleverness that is used to get him, meh. Well acted version though.

- 1978–19852h 31mTV-147.1 (356)TV EpisodeDirectorBasil ColemanStarsHelen MirrenBrian StirnerRichard PascoAfter the overthrowing of Duke Senior by his tyrannical brother, Senior's daughter Rosalind disguises herself as a man and sets out to find her banished father while also counseling her clumsy suitor Orlando in the art of wooing.Own. Part of series ONE of the complete BBC collection. The costumes when they are in court are a little ridiculous, although it does help emphasis the contrast of the country. Helen Mirren is good in the lead as Rosaline, as is Richard Pasco's Jaques. The singing is an acquired taste. (Spot David Prowse without the Darth Vader mask as the Charles who wrestles Orlando early on.) Currently the only version I own.
- DirectorChristine EdzardStarsJames FoxCyril CusackAndrew TiernanHiding out in an industrial wasteland from the murderous wrath of a regional ruler, a woman, disguised as a boy, gives wooing lessons to the edgy lad who proclaims he loves her.To see. So he banishes Posthumus (Michael Pennington), who goes to fight for Rome. Imogen (dressed as a boy) goes in search of her husband, who meanwhile has boasted to his pal Iachimo (Robert Lindsay) that Imogen would never betray him. And Iachimo's determined to prove him wrong.Own. Part of series SIX of the complete BBC collection.I am not a huge fan of the late romances. But this play has less humour than the other romances. It does have some beautiful poetry and is able to juggle drama with a happy ending better than The Winter's tale. This version has one of the most impressive casts in this BBC series. Helen Mirren and Michael Pennigton play the young married couple with passion. The support cast of Michael Gough, Claire Bloom and Robert Lindsey are all excellent. It has better camera work, sets lighting and costumes than most of the series. Like a lot of the series it goes for a 17th century look rather than a modern or early British look but since a lot of the story feels absurd (Michael Hordern does a fantastic cameo as Jupiter), it works well. Currently the only version I own, although I doubt I will need another.
- DirectorMichael AlmereydaStarsEthan HawkeEd HarrisMilla JovovichA gritty story of a take-no-prisoners war between dirty cops and an outlaw biker gang. A drug kingpin is driven to desperate measures. To see (although the scores this get, ouch.)
- DirectorMelly StillStarsHiran AbeysekeraRomayne AndrewsGillian BevanCymbeline is a ruler of a divided Britain. But a powerful figure behind the throne is plotting to seize power and murder them both.To see.
- DirectorSvend GadeHeinz SchallStarsAsta NielsenPaul ConradiMathilde BrandtDanish silent movie-star Asta Nielsen formed her own production company to make this film, in which new elements are combined with features (and a few lines) familiar from Shakespeare's version of the legend. The most important of these changes sees Hamlet made into a female character - a princess forced to masquerade as a man by her scheming mother; from this follows Hamlet's secret passion for Horatio and rivalry with Ophelia for his love. Queen Gertrude is here presented as conspiring in her first husband's murder, and the old king's ghost does not appear - young Hamlet merely hears a voice from the tomb and (apparently) dreams of him. In addition, Hamlet now kills Claudius (in a fire) immediately upon returning from Norway with an army led by old school- friend Fortinbras, and it falls to Gertrude to engineer Hamlet's death in the fencing match as well as kill herself by accidentally drinking the poisoned wine.
- DirectorLaurence OlivierStarsLaurence OlivierJean SimmonsJohn LauriePrince Hamlet struggles over whether or not he should kill his uncle, whom he suspects has murdered his father, the former king.Own. Laurence Oliver wrote, directed and stared in this Oscar Best Picture Winner. He had played the role successfully on stage a decade before. He is a little too old for the role as he was already 40. The fact that the woman playing his mother was only turning 30 didn't help. The whole Oedipus thing going on stands out more in this adaption than any other I have seen. A lot of criticism for what had to be cut, but as a film it all works well. It has Patrick Troughton and Peter Cushing in small roles as the Player King and Oscric respectively. Bonus point if you can spot Christopher Lee.
- DirectorAkira KurosawaStarsToshirô MifuneMasayuki MoriKyôko KagawaA vengeful young man marries the daughter of a corrupt industrialist in order to seek justice for his father's suicide.(Hamlet plot) Seen. Akira Kurosawa directed in a modern Japanese corporate setting. Not essential like his other Shakespeare adaptions but still worth watching.
- DirectorGrigoriy KozintsevStarsInnokentiy SmoktunovskiyMikhail NazvanovElza RadzinaAfter the death of the King of Denmark - Hamlet's father - his brother Claudius ascends the throne, who takes his widow Gertrude as his wife. Hamlet meets the ghost of his father and learns that he was killed by Claudius. To see.
- DirectorBill ColleranJohn GielgudStarsRichard BurtonHume CronynAlfred DrakeThe highly successful 1964 Richard Burton Broadway production of "Hamlet", deliberately staged in the style of a "dress rehearsal", but performed in front of a live audience.Seen / maybe get (although how many Hamlet versions can one need?)
- DirectorPhilip SavilleStarsChristopher PlummerRobert ShawAlec ClunesHamlet suspects his uncle has murdered his father to claim the throne of Denmark and the hand of Hamlet's mother, but the Prince cannot decide whether or not he should take vengeance. To see.
- DirectorTony RichardsonStarsNicol WilliamsonJudy ParfittAnthony HopkinsAcademy Award-winning director Tony Richardson brings Shakespeare's tragedy to the screen - with searing performances from Nicol Williamson as the melancholy Dane and future Academy Award-winner Anthony Hopkins as the deceitful Claudius.Own. It is not brilliant but Willamson's fast talking get through more of the dialogue in less time than most of his rivals. His mother is less than a year older than him though. His uncle Claudius is played by Anthony Hopkins is even younger than him but gives a solid performance.
- DirectorPeter WoodStarsRichard ChamberlainMichael RedgraveMargaret LeightonHamlet suspects his uncle has murdered his father to claim the throne of Denmark and the hand of Hamlet's mother, but the prince cannot decide whether or not he should take vengeance. To see.

Part of series TWO of the complete BBC collection. Claire Bloom as Gertrude is less than 8 years older than Derek Jacobi's Hamlet. Patrick Stewart's Uncle Claudius is younger than his nephew. but all three give good performances. Patrick Stewart reprises the role nearly 30 years later in David Tennant's Hamlet. The film is more stylistic and expressionistic compared to the naturalism look of all the series one BBC.
- DirectorRick MoranisDave ThomasStarsRick MoranisDave ThomasMax von SydowCanada's most famous hosers, Bob and Doug McKenzie, get jobs at the Elsinore Brewery, only to learn that something is rotten with the state of it.(very loose Hamlet plot) Seen.
- DirectorFranco ZeffirelliStarsMel GibsonGlenn CloseAlan BatesHamlet, Prince of Denmark, finds out that his uncle Claudius killed his father to obtain the throne, and plans revenge.Own. Franco Zeffrelli's third Shakespeare. He apparently picked Gibson after seeing his performance in Lethal Weapon. Close in only 9 years older than Gibson. Her Gertrude is realistic though. Bates and Holms are good as Claudius and Polonius respectively.Gibson might not be as confident with Shakespeare as some of the other Hamlets but his performance itself is convincing.
- DirectorMark OlshakerStarsKenneth BranaghRichard CliffordRichard EastonA unique, behind-the-scenes look at Shakespeare's great play. - DirectorGregory DoranStarsDavid TennantPatrick StewartPenny DownieThe RSC puts a modern spin on Shakespeare's Hamlet in this filmed-for-television version of their stage production. The Prince of Denmark seeks vengeance after his father is murdered and his mother marries the murderer.Own. Arguably one of the best versions to use. Another one that is able to get through a lot of dialogue quickly. I really like Tennant in this. Patrick Stewart returns to Claudius after nearly 30 years. He plays him with more subtlety this time.
- StarsDavid TennantJade AnoukaFelix AylmerMeet with David Tennant and fellow Hamlets who compare notes on the challenge of playing the iconic role.Actors discuss playing Hamlet.

Hillie's Gertrude is only 11 years older than Benedict Cumberbach. But I am curious how well he can do Hamlet. Also I am a big fan of Ciaran Hinds who plays Claudius.
- DirectorDavid LeveauxTim Van SomerenStarsJoshua McGuireDaniel RadcliffeDavid HaigAgainst the backdrop of Hamlet, two hapless minor characters, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, take centre stage.(Based on Hamlet plot) . I enjoyed seeing it more as a play than I did Stoppard's movie so maybe see if I can .

- DirectorGus Van SantStarsRiver PhoenixKeanu ReevesJames RussoTwo best friends living on the streets of Portland as hustlers embark on a journey of self discovery and find their relationship stumbling along the way.(Henry IV.1 and 2 plot) Own. The plot is very loose with Keanu Reeves playing a son of a mayor who street hustles before taking on the money and responsibility expected of him. Considered a classic of "New Queer Cinema" by Gus Van Sant with River Phoenix brilliant as a homeless teenager.
- DirectorJohn CairdStarsRonald PickupJonathan FirthDaniel BettsHenry Bolingbroke has now been crowned King of England, but faces a rebellion headed by the embittered Earl of Northumberland and his son (nicknamed 'Hotspur'). - DirectorRichard EyreStarsAlun ArmstrongJoe ArmstrongJohn Ashton1403: Henry IV finds himself facing uprisings from the Welsh chieftain Owen Glendower and impetuous young Harry "Hotspur" Percy, son of Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland, angry with the king for not paying Glendower ransom for his brother-in-law Mortimer. Another trial for Henry is the fact that his son, Prince Hal, keeps company with the older, reprobate drunkard Sir John Falstaff. Though the prince is his friend he is not above playing cruel jests on Falstaff, robbing him in disguise and returning his money after Falstaff has given an exaggerated account of his bravery in the hold-up. However, Hal joins his father at the wintry battle of Shrewsbury to put down Hotspur's revolt, where Hal kills Hotspur in single combat - Falstaff later claiming credit for the deed. Hotspur is routed but Henry and Hal still have to face the uprisings of Glendower and Nortumberland, now joined by the archbishop of York.Own.

After brawling with the truculent Pistol, Falstaff prepares to leave his lover, Doll Tearsheet, criticizing Hal to her, unaware that the prince is eaves-dropping. Falstaff assembles a motley crew from Justice Shallow but Henry's cousin Westmoreland arrests the rebel leaders after duping them into a truce. Hal, assuming his father is dead, dons the crown and is berated by the dying king but they reconcile as Henry's last gesture is to crown his son. Hal accedes to the throne as Henry V but, now aware he must put frivolity aside, banishes Falstaff as his first act as ruler.Own.

Kenneth Branagh's directorial debut earns him oscar nominations for best actor and best director. It won for costume design. It is the first great looking Shakespeare film in a very long time, starting the trend of great 90s films. It is dark and gritty with most of the comic lines down played. Branagh is supported by a great cast.
- DirectorThea SharrockStarsEdward AkroutTom BrookeGeraldine ChaplinHal is now a responsible monarch as Henry V, his rejection of Falstaff hastening the latter's death. Told by courtiers that, through Edward III, he has a claim to the French throne he makes overtures to the Dauphin but is sent a humiliating present of tennis balls. He prepares an expeditionary force to cross the Channel and take the throne, capturing the town of Harfleur during a surprise nocturnal raid following an inspirational speech. Though merciful to its inhabitants, Henry allows soldier Bardolph to be hung for looting. After another truce is turned down by the French, Henry prepares for the pitched battle of Agincourt, wandering the camp in disguise on its eve to gauge opinion of him. The battle is won with minimal English losses and the French king, whose daughter Henry marries, declares him to be his successor. However, there is no dowry, angering the court. Margaret finds the pious Henry a dull husband and embarks upon an affair with Somerset as well as crossing Gloucester's wife Eleanor. When Gloucester is arrested for alleged treason because of Eleanor, Henry is too feeble to prevent his death or the country slipping into civil war.Own. Part of series FIVE of the complete BBC collection. Extremely stylistic over naturalistic. It makes no attempt to hide the fact it is on a set. And the set is like a children's playground with bright colors. These are men but they are childish with their fighting. Spot Trevor Peacock from Vicar of Dibley as Talbot.
