Sequels Really Worth Watching
There are enormous amounts of sequels to every movie that ever made any money. Most are pretty standard bad. But the Trolls reviewing these days miss alot when condeming (or praising) films just because a movie didn't live up to the hype- Here's my list of those that do.
I'm not going to list obvious sequels in like the Star Wars or Lord of the Rings "trilogies".

- DirectorW.S. Van DykeStarsWilliam PowellMyrna LoyJames StewartPrivate detective Nick Charles and his wealthy wife Nora are back home at last and hoping for a quiet New Year when there is a murder. The obvious suspect is his wife, Nora's cousin, Selma. Not to be dissmissed in any way. Just fractionally less impressive than the original- arguabley better because of the outstanding cast, another genuinely puzzling case and an enormous amount of really funny humor.
- DirectorRichard LesterStarsMichael YorkRaquel WelchOliver ReedThe Four Musketeers defend the queen and her dressmaker from Cardinal Richelieu and Milady de Winter. Both the preceeding Three Musketeers and this with Oliver Reed, Michael York, Faye Dunaway, Christopher Lee and the rest are classic- and much closer the original story than the gawdawful Disney version or more recent versions. Both are great adventures in the original non-blockbuster- non-hype ridden meaning of the word.
- DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsAl PacinoRobert De NiroRobert DuvallThe early life and career of Vito Corleone in 1920s New York City is portrayed, while his son, Michael, expands and tightens his grip on the family crime syndicate.Argueably better than the original. Robert DevNiro's role as the young Vito Corleone is incredible and Al Pacino is at his very best as a radically changing Sonny as the world changes and new problems arise.
- DirectorJames CameronStarsSigourney WeaverMichael BiehnCarrie HennDecades after surviving the Nostromo incident, Ellen Ripley is sent out to re-establish contact with a terraforming colony but finds herself battling the Alien Queen and her offspring.Very much an action based re-imagining of the horror classic. Alien Bugs vs Space Marines- still these best of it's type of action movie. Stan Winston's Alien Queen is incredible.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsNoomi RapaceLogan Marshall-GreenMichael FassbenderFollowing clues to the origin of mankind, a team finds a structure on a distant moon, but they soon realize they are not alone.A great scifi adventure that can stand on it's own that dares to challenge the corporate sellings bought by too many of the xenomorph fan cults that base themselves on the lackluster offerings of most of this series
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleHeath LedgerAaron EckhartWhen the menace known as the Joker wreaks havoc and chaos on the people of Gotham, Batman must accept one of the greatest psychological and physical tests of his ability to fight injustice.Far superior to the rest of Nolan's Batman series- especially the confusing, unintelligable 3rd movie, definitely the best Batman movie, possibly the best comic movie to date. Heath Ledger's posthumous Oscar winning preformance as the Joker is not to be missed.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsChris EvansSamuel L. JacksonScarlett JohanssonAs Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world, he teams up with a fellow Avenger and S.H.I.E.L.D agent, Black Widow, to battle a new threat from history: an assassin known as the Winter Soldier. An incredible movie, not just in the comic genre. It really successfully brings a deep almost cold-war feel to Marvel's super hero world without sacrificing humor, action sequences(which are great) or real character development.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsChris EvansRobert Downey Jr.Scarlett JohanssonPolitical involvement in the Avengers' affairs causes a rift between Captain America and Iron Man.I list this as much a sequel to both Avengers movies as much as to just "Winter Soldier" It really is an Avengers movie with a spectacular subdued villian and the introduction to the Black Panther character (so expertly played by Chadwick Boseman).
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsAnthony HopkinsJulianne MooreGary OldmanLiving in exile, Dr. Hannibal Lecter tries to reconnect with now disgraced F.B.I. Agent Clarice Starling, and finds himself a target for revenge from a powerful victim.Yes it is over the top, yes it is inferior to the classic Silence of the Lambs, but Anthony Hopkins is incredible (again) as hollywood's favorite serial killer. It's worth seeing just to see his interaction with those stupid enough to be rude in his presence.
- DirectorJohn McTiernanStarsBruce WillisJeremy IronsSamuel L. JacksonJohn McClane and a Harlem store owner are targeted by German terrorist Simon in New York City, where he plans to rob the Federal Reserve Building. The best one-upping-the-original-robbery-caper a big budget action sequel has done yet. Irons is great as the infamous Hans Gruber's brother. Samuel Jackson's great as the outraged citizen who just doesn't want to be involved.
- DirectorAlan TaylorStarsArnold SchwarzeneggerJason ClarkeEmilia ClarkeWhen John Connor, leader of the human resistance, sends Sgt. Kyle Reese back to 1984 to protect Sarah Connor and safeguard the future, an unexpected turn of events creates a fractured timeline. Not as much a sequel as a time travel re-write. While it has it problems, it is a very good twist on the classic time travelling robo-assassin story. I think we all forgot the original story was about Sarah & Reese 1st, John 2nd.
- DirectorNicholas MeyerStarsWilliam ShatnerLeonard NimoyDeForest KelleyWith the assistance of the Enterprise crew, Admiral Kirk must stop an old nemesis, Khan Noonien Singh, from using the life-generating Genesis Device as the ultimate weapon.I only list this because if you're not already a fan of Star Trek, you might not know that the Wrath of Khan is better than all the other Star Trek films- with the original casts-hands down.
- DirectorSteven SoderberghStarsGeorge ClooneyBrad PittJulia RobertsDaniel Ocean recruits one more team member so he can pull off three major European heists in this sequel to Ocean's Eleven (2001).In this era of sequel after sequel- manytimes in name only-(as with Ocean's 8) Ocean's 12 is as stylish and fun as the first, this time around our intrepid gang of thieves must appease their past victim with an even greater scheme. It works. It is very funny at parts and the entire cast shines as they fool us all once again.
- DirectorMarc ForsterStarsDaniel CraigOlga KurylenkoMathieu AmalricJames Bond descends into mystery as he tries to stop a mysterious organisation from eliminating a country's most valuable resource.I specifically wanted to include this "sequel" to Dainiel Craig's spectacular debute as James Bond in Casino Royal because I think that it was really overlooked and is quite a good film- especially in the wake of Dalton's 2 bad Bond films and the latter Moore movies which are all vastly inferior. The return of Giancarlo Giannini as Mathis (from Casino Royal) is one of the highlights of the film and worth checking out.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsBruce CampbellSarah BerryDan HicksAsh Williams, the lone survivor of an earlier onslaught of flesh-possessing spirits, holes up in a cabin with a group of strangers while the demons continue their attack.Wow, what to say? Not exactly a sequel even though it's called Evil Dead 2- it's actually a "same-director-and-star-remake-because-we-actually-have-a-budget-this-time" classic- that in it's own way, is far better than the original OR the far inferior remake.
- DirectorLee UnkrichStarsTom HanksTim AllenJoan CusackThe toys are mistakenly delivered to a day-care center instead of the attic right before Andy leaves for college, and it's up to Woody to convince the other toys that they weren't abandoned and to return home.A genuinely moving treat. While #2 was, generally speaking a run of the mill sequel to the amazing original film, it was good. #3 really was about growing up and passing on to the next generation and was done both touchingly and beautifully done.
- DirectorGareth EdwardsStarsFelicity JonesDiego LunaAlan TudykIn a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire's ultimate weapon of destruction.Brilliantly put together “prequel” idea without rehashing the same plots as the original trilogy. Great performances, an added villain and a seemingly suicidal mission really make this film. Vader is as impressive as he should be and the Death Star is even more frightening.
- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsHarrison FordRyan GoslingAna de ArmasYoung Blade Runner K's discovery of a long-buried secret leads him to track down former Blade Runner Rick Deckard, who's been missing for thirty years.Very enticing story following the events 40 years after the original- I don’t know what people expected, but, the evolution of this future dystopian world, the technology and society is great- adding the element of AI and group expectations vs personal desires.
- DirectorMichael DoughertyStarsKyle ChandlerVera FarmigaMillie Bobby BrownThe crypto-zoological agency Monarch faces off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. While not as good as the 2014 movie, or as original an adaptation as Shin-Godzilla, this movie is worth checking out just to see Ghidora, Mothra and Rodan done well. Mothra is beautifully done.
- DirectorMatthijs van Heijningen Jr.StarsMary Elizabeth WinsteadJoel EdgertonUlrich ThomsenAt an Antarctica research site, the discovery of an alien craft leads to a confrontation between graduate student Kate Lloyd and scientist Dr. Sander Halvorson.Again, this “prequel” to the classic Carpenter film is sadly weak, but if you’re a fan of the original, and love the creature itself as much as I do, this is worth seeing just to see what Hollywood can do with monstrous transformations these days( the sequence with the females Norwegian scientist is fantastic.
