- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroCathy MoriartyJoe PesciThe life of boxer Jake LaMotta, whose violence and temper that led him to the top in the ring destroyed his life outside of it.10/10. One of the most emotionally powerful and sublime films I've ever seen. Memorable from frame one.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroJodie FosterCybill ShepherdA mentally unstable veteran works as a nighttime taxi driver in New York City, where the perceived decadence and sleaze fuels his urge for violent action.10/10. Another Scorsese masterpiece. De Niro is brilliant and the film is so layered and full of different interpretations.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsLeonardo DiCaprioJonah HillMargot RobbieBased on the true story of Jordan Belfort, from his rise to a wealthy stock-broker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government.10/10. My favourite film of 2013. TWOWS is insane, endlessly watchable, and consistently enthralling. Di Caprio is terrific.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroRay LiottaJoe PesciThe story of Henry Hill and his life in the mafia, covering his relationship with his wife Karen and his mob partners Jimmy Conway and Tommy DeVito.10/10. Smart, funny, violent, and entertaining, this is must-see film for those who don't even like mob movies.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroJerry LewisDiahnne AbbottA passionate yet unsuccessful comedian stalks and kidnaps his idol to take the spotlight for himself.9/10. Hilarious and disturbing portrait of insanity. De Niro is amazing as usual.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroSharon StoneJoe PesciIn Las Vegas, two best friends - a casino executive and a mafia enforcer - compete for a gambling empire and a fast-living, fast-loving socialite.9/10. Gripping, ambitious, and epic crime story about greed and loyalty. Goodfellas is better, but I like Casino even more.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroAl PacinoJoe PesciAn illustration of Frank Sheeran's life, from W.W.II veteran to hit-man for the Bufalino crime family and his alleged assassination of his close friend Jimmy Hoffa.Bold, sad, and epic, The Irishman is Scorsese's career-long summation of gangster guilt. Unmissable.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroHarvey KeitelDavid ProvalIn New York City's Little Italy, a devoutly Catholic mobster must reconcile his desire for power, his feelings for his epileptic lover, and his devotion to his troublesome friend.8.5/10. Compelling early crime film from a young Scorsese. Full of his trademark style and brisk pace.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsLeonardo DiCaprioEmily MortimerMark RuffaloTeddy Daniels and Chuck Aule, two US marshals, are sent to an asylum on a remote island in order to investigate the disappearance of a patient, where Teddy uncovers a shocking truth about the place.8/10. Very entertaining and trippy psychological thriller. The direction is impeccable.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsLeonardo DiCaprioCameron DiazDaniel Day-LewisIn 1862, Amsterdam Vallon returns to the Five Points area of New York City seeking revenge against Bill the Butcher; his father's killer.7.5/10. Flawed, but still highly watchable. Daniel Day-Lewis is incredible and the epic scope of the film is commendable.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroNick NolteJessica LangeA convicted rapist, released from prison after serving a fourteen-year sentence, stalks the family of the lawyer who originally defended him.7.5/10. Intense and visceral, Scorsese's remake isn't as good as the 1962 original, but it has a style all its own. The musings on guilt and personal accountability are handled well and still resonate.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsAndrew GarfieldAdam DriverLiam NeesonIn the 17th century, two Portuguese Jesuit priests travel to Japan in an attempt to locate their mentor, who is rumored to have committed apostasy, and to propagate Catholicism.7/10. Extremely ambitious and expansive epic about a crisis of faith. A little long and protracted but raises a lot of intriguing questions.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsEllen BurstynKris KristoffersonMia BendixsenA recently widowed woman is on the road with her precocious young son, determined to make a new life for herself as a singer.7/10. An American renaissance take on Mildred Pierce, except not as bleak. Ellen Burstyn is great and the film has a breezy style that makes it relatable, funny, and realistic.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsLeonardo DiCaprioRobert De NiroLily GladstoneWhen oil is discovered in 1920s Oklahoma under Osage Nation land, the Osage people are murdered one by one - until the FBI steps in to unravel the mystery.7/10. Scorsese's take on a Revisionist Western. Killers of the Flower Moon is epic but too long, a movie that deals with heavy themes about genocide and greed but one that I don't think belongs in the upper tier of Scorsese films.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsAsa ButterfieldChloë Grace MoretzChristopher LeeIn 1931 Paris, an orphan living in the walls of a train station gets wrapped up in a mystery involving his late father and an automaton.7/10. Martin Scorsese's movie about movies, Hugo is a little scatterbrained but a fitting tribute to the medium from one of its greatest masters, as well as a delightful little kids movie.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsBarbara HersheyDavid CarradineBarry PrimusDuring the Great Depression, a union leader and a young woman become criminals to exact revenge on the management of a railroad.7/10. Slightly exploitative but good nonetheless. The period elements are great.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsLeonardo DiCaprioMatt DamonJack NicholsonAn undercover cop and a mole in the police attempt to identify each other while infiltrating an Irish gang in South Boston.7/10. Highly overrated but still decent crime film. The plot is extremely contrived and compared to other Scorsese films this doesn't leave that much of an impact.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsLeonardo DiCaprioCate BlanchettKate BeckinsaleA biopic depicting the early years of legendary director and aviator Howard Hughes' career from the late 1920s to the mid 1940s.6/10. Slightly disappointing. It has flashes of brilliance here and there but is simply too unfocused. A film about Howard Hughes' later life would have made for a great picture.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsGriffin DunneRosanna ArquetteVerna BloomAn ordinary word processor has the worst night of his life after he agrees to visit a girl in Soho he met that evening at a coffee shop.6/10. Off beat and weird, After Hours has great style and is oddly funny a lot of the time, but is overall slight. I liked how tightly constructed the film was but it's lacking in characterizations and it exchanges that to portray a wild night lost in SoHo.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsDaniel Day-LewisMichelle PfeifferWinona RyderA tale of nineteenth-century New York high society in which a young lawyer falls in love with a woman separated from her husband, while he is engaged to the woman's cousin.6/10. The direction, production design, photography, and attention to period detail is exquisite but I found it too lacking in the narrative department. The focus on the upper class makes the film kind of cold and detached.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsCatherine ScorseseCharles ScorseseMartin ScorseseMartin Scorsese interviews his mother and father about their life in New York City and the family history back in Sicily. These are two people who have lived together for a long time and know each other very well.6/10. Martin Scorsese's parents tell stories about their youth and while that has merit and paints an interesting picture of immigrant life, there's not much here that enthralled me.
