1. Blade Runner (1982)

R | 117 min | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

84 Metascore

A blade runner must pursue and terminate four replicants who stole a ship in space and have returned to Earth to find their creator.

Director: Ridley Scott | Stars: Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos

Votes: 822,762 | Gross: $32.87M

Seminal science fiction. In atmosphere, story and special effects Blade Runner really does have it all. Several decades years later Scott's masterpiece is still influencing modern sci-fi with its expert use of a rain-soaked futuristic noir tale kept from branching out on a tangent and thus losing its key focus - a simple plot that explores what it is to be human. Existential themes are given welcome musical support from Vangelis in one of the great scores. An obvious understanding of what they were doing was not only a huge tribute to Dick's original story, it served as the basis for many to replicate it in the years since Deckard first had that steaming pot of noodles on a dark, wet LA evening.

2. Spirited Away (2001)

PG | 125 min | Animation, Adventure, Family

96 Metascore

During her family's move to the suburbs, a sullen 10-year-old girl wanders into a world ruled by gods, witches and spirits, and where humans are changed into beasts.

Director: Hayao Miyazaki | Stars: Daveigh Chase, Suzanne Pleshette, Miyu Irino, Rumi Hiiragi

Votes: 848,794 | Gross: $10.06M

Like any film should do, Spirited Away tells a wonderful and exciting story that caters for all those watching. Similar to Toy Story in that it's accessible to all ages for different reasons and without being overly sentimental or pretentious. For me it's all about the innocence of childhood and the yearning for adventure that we all had. It being entirely free of the sadly now standard heaps of CGI is a refreshing experience too, Miyazaki is a champion for what he does and Ghibli thoroughly deserved their Oscar for this.

3. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

PG-13 | 178 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

92 Metascore

A meek Hobbit from the Shire and eight companions set out on a journey to destroy the powerful One Ring and save Middle-earth from the Dark Lord Sauron.

Director: Peter Jackson | Stars: Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom, Sean Bean

Votes: 2,006,159 | Gross: $315.54M

An epic in the truest meaning. The sense of wonder and intrigue into Tolkien's world was brought to the big screen so lovingly by Jackson that a whole new generation was introduced to one of the most incredible stories. Essentially a road movie about an innocent man out of his depth in a world capable of crushing him at any moment, yet blessed - or indeed cursed - with a ring that gives him such power that it essentially elevates him to the highest position in the land, Fellowship is all about friendship and resisting the lures of evil. Such wonderful supporting characters and another absolutely fine musical score come together to treat us to 3 hours of pure, magical escapism.

4. Sin City (2005)

R | 124 min | Crime, Thriller

74 Metascore

An exploration of the dark and miserable Basin City and three of its residents, all of whom are caught up in violent corruption.

Directors: Frank Miller, Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez | Stars: Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba

Votes: 793,626 | Gross: $74.10M

Maybe the first great comic book film of the 21st century. The characters are desperate, turning to extreme measures to save loved ones and solve their mysteries. The dialogue is sleek and delivered with menace, dripping with a cool jet black humour that tempts out the teenager in all of us. Visually it's unique. Predominantly black and white with splashes of colour that jump out like a glint of light hitting the gloomy canvas. You want to mock it and roll your eyes at the obvious casting (Rourke the psychotic vigilante, Alba the gorgeous damsel in distress, Willis the grunting hard boiled cop, I could go on) but you remember there's a reason they're involved. It's violent, sexy, misogynistic and hugely shallow perhaps, but Sin City is a genuinely superb ride that reminds you why you love cinema.

5. Martyrs (2008)

R | 99 min | Horror

A young woman's quest for revenge against the people who kidnapped and tormented her as a child leads her and a friend, who is also a victim of child abuse, on a terrifying journey into a living hell of depravity.

Director: Pascal Laugier | Stars: Morjana Alaoui, Mylène Jampanoï, Catherine Bégin, Robert Toupin

Votes: 106,347

Personally I prefer horror films to deal with situations that actually are horrifying and difficult to watch. Martyrs is exceptionally hard to experience as the leads are so convincing you will feel you are there with them trying to survive their ordeal, willing them on with your armchair support and feeling their every bout of abuse. It's disgusting and ultimately massively depressing but it will leave you with thoughts that linger long afterwards...if you don't turn off before it can ask such upsetting questions.

6. My Neighbor Totoro (1988)

G | 86 min | Animation, Comedy, Family

86 Metascore

When two girls move to the country to be near their ailing mother, they have adventures with the wondrous forest spirits who live nearby.

Director: Hayao Miyazaki | Stars: Hitoshi Takagi, Noriko Hidaka, Chika Sakamoto, Shigesato Itoi

Votes: 379,975 | Gross: $1.11M

Totoro is one of the nicest films ever made. It's full of youthful innocence and humour, it doesn't contain anything remotely 'adult' and leaves you feeling content and safe. As a film that is essentially for children, it hints at the sadness of a loss of anyone's childhood, the fear of the loss of a parent and impending adolescence. It's not sad however, the film contains so much fun and happiness you probably won't stop to think about the deeper issues it explores until after it.

Director: Ridley Scott | Stars: Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, John Hurt, Veronica Cartwright

Votes: 949,942 | Gross: $78.90M

All the members of the Alien anthology are very different. The first one was horror. Whilst the seldom seen xenomorph is clearly terrifying, the true villain in Alien is space itself. Never has a film's tagline been so stunningly accurate. Utterly nail-biting tension very rarely achieved in the modern day (an atmosphere so intense it led to a video game based purely on it) and an inspirational role model of a female protagonist that went against the 70s/80s male standard for heroes. The classic chest bursting scene is an example of why, with the right make up, actors and a large helping of patience you can achieve moments that will not date or descend into farce. The cat survives too, which is nice.

Director: James Ward Byrkit | Stars: Emily Baldoni, Maury Sterling, Nicholas Brendon, Elizabeth Gracen

Votes: 145,817 | Gross: $0.07M

Every once in a while I hear of a film, usually independently made, that warrants a watch because it's influenced by other, more famous movies and might be worth a watch. More often than not these films are not so great at all. Coherence takes that trend and blasts it into another dimension. A budget of seemingly nothing and a virtually unknown skeleton crew acting out a script that was written and given to them on a day to day basis really makes you wonder how so many multi-million pound productions are so woeful. This is a film where you can tell they used every second and cent they had to tell a remarkably complicated story in an equally astonishingly simple way.

Kooky, zany stories with kooky, zany performances may not be to everyone's liking but to shun this film because of its director's reputation, its poster or its title is a mistake. It's an utter joy from start to finish as we're told an elaborate, hilarious tale set in a serious period. Bizarre angles, strange accents and surprisingly violent set pieces that wouldn't look out of place in the loudest, angriest Vin Diesel film. A charming central turn from a first time actor motoring the story with doe-eyed looks questioning clearly exaggerated details from older, wiser characters gives us a relatable hero and a fine young star. If you catch TGBH even twenty minutes in, you'll soon be shocking yourself another ninety later when you see you've been glued to the rest.
