Filmens store styrke er bildematerialet, hvor private klipp fra Sennas liv blandes med opptak fra Sennas bilkamera, bilder fra løpene og dokumentarfoto fra innsiden av Sennas lag.
Det er bare 21 år siden Senna døde, men det er slående hvor tett datidens reportasjeteam kom på utøverne. Ikke minst gjelder det dødshelgen i april/mai 1994, hvor Roland Ratzenberger også omkom på Imola-banen i San Marino. Det henger en svart sky over Sennas ansikt i opptakene gjort bare noen dager før han døde.
Senna er laget i samarbeid med Ayrton Sennas familie. Den er ikke bare servil, men jeg kunne ønsket meg at filmskaperne strøk Senna litt mer mothårs og forklarte litt mer om hva som gjorde ham så god på asfalten og hvorfor det brasilianske folket elsket ham. Denne satt godt. Kunne sagt mer om McCullins liv etter at han sluttet i Sunday Times. Som alltid i fotodokumentarer savnet jeg litt om det håndverksmessige, altså hvordan han tar bildene sine. Ikke bare det overordnede "man må ha empati" og så videre.
