He is a failure at selling but Marcy changes her attitude towards his racing, and he qualifies for the 500. Race-car drivers Johnnie Parsons, Duke Nalon, Manuel Ayulo (not the actor Manuel Ayuso) and Henry Banks play themselves.

Rizzo and his thugs, Dutch Gordon and Augie Grotz, next blackmail Doris' brother Bill, a college basketball star, into throwing the college games by threatening to ruin Doris' reputation. Mark, meanwhile, continues his romance with fashion editor Kerry Barker, and writes columns about the disreputable Rizzo. His columns earn him death threats from Rizzo and pressure from the newspaper's nervous publisher. When Bill's duplicity is discovered and he is expelled from school, Doris commits suicide after having sent a written confession to Mark. Although Rizzo tries to silence Mark and Bill by murdering them, his attempts fail and he and his cohorts are arrested after a brawl in the newspaper's offices.

Mike becomes a star who cannot be stopped, but is disliked by his teammates becuase of his selfish play. Jack tries to keek Mike away from his sister Margaret (Barbara Bestar), who is in love with him, which leads to a bloody fight between the two men. The angry Mike accepts a bribe from gambler Rocky Gilbratar (Lyle Talbot) to throw the big final game. But during the game, an appeal from a young boy who idolizes him, Davey (Duncan Richardson), sets Mike on the right road, and his unselfish play helps win the game.

He and his men whip Wilson's gang and all but drive them out of the town and territory, and Jim wins the respect of the community. When he is made sheriff, he and his pal Ray Hammond (Rick Vallin)) decide to keep going straight. The rest of Jim's old gang join Wilson's outfit and proceed to loot the town. Jim and Ray go into action and the outlaws are either killed or jailed. The townspeople petition the governor for a pardon for both of them.

Blitz, the club dog, leads them to the body of one of the escapees, killed by the other escapee, Angus. THe latter then shows up at the camp.

For years a master gang of rustlers has raided government grazing lands and Lieutenant-Governor Watson orders Scott to get them. Scott, disguised as a prospector, is killed when he spots the outlaws deep in the Sangre de Christo range. Head of the rustlers is rancher Champ Wylie and his gang includes his foreman Santee and a crack gunman, Kincaid. Visiting Wylie is his novelist niece Jane Warren. When Scott is not heard from, Mike, also posing as a prospector, goes to find him, and meets Jane. He eventually solves the rustling mystery, but is recognized as a lawman. In a gun battle in the hills, Mike kills Wylie and his men, and ends up with Jane in his arms.

In Garnet Basin, many cattlemen are forced to sell their cattle for low prices. Processed in rendering plants, they're only used for their hides, fats and oils, tallow for soap and fertilizers. Without sufficient funds, many ranchers face foreclosures on their lands. Greedy local banker Marvin Parker refuses to extend the mortgage payments or make any new loans to ranchers. He hopes to force the ranchers to sell their lands for cheap to him. In cahoots with Parker are Caddo Sledge, the owner of a cattle rendering plant and womanizing rancher Harry Odell. Odell is engaged to Linda Garnet, daughter of rancher Walt Garnet, but is secretly romancing Melba Sykes, daughter of Tim Sykes. Against the scheming trio of Parker, Sledge and Odell is Ben Anthony, former cattleman, who is the owner of the local freight and stagecoach line. A war of sorts ensues between Ben Anthony and the crooked trio. When the army announces an upcoming purchase of beef from the area, the cattlemen sense that a solution to their problem is near and that ranches, cattle businesses and lands soon could be saved. These news prompt the criminal trio of Parker, Sledge and Odell to intensify their campaign of intimidation and destruction, culminating in raids against Ben Anthony's freight line and murder of all those witnesses who could identify them as the culprits. The climax sees Ben Anthony in a gunfight against Sledge and Parker while a fugitive Odell is tracked by local rancher Fritz Warner.

Jane tells him his father was stabbed in a quarrel over counterfeit money given to him for his freight interests. Frank learns that Hardy, a printer; Temple, a store owner; Perry, a peddler; Greeley, a gambler, and Spain, a jeweler, are Copperheads and one of them murdered his father.

Corporal Webb (Kirby Grant) finds a man who seems to have hung himself after writing a suicide note. Webb notes this happened while the suicider was in the midst of cooking himself a meal, and concludes that all is not right in this part of Canada. Chinook agrees with him. Marion Carr, Claudia Drake and Gloria Talbott are on hand as (mighty nice) visual distractions.

Later, Tack and Strummer save Taylor from being hanged by the vigilantes on the false robbery charge, and Lucy provides evidence that points to Brewer and his gang as the gold thieves. But Brett charges Tack and Strummer with the theft and the vigilantes gather to hang them.

When a Wells Fargo agent is murdered while working undercover for Special Agent Jackson, Walt follows the murderer's trail to his father's cabin, and is wounded when a gunfight erupts. Duncan brings Walt to town where he is treated by Dr. Bradley and his daughter, Lois, who is Walt's girl friend. While Walt is recuperating, his father learns the details about the local gold mine's next shipment from Jackson, who is unaware of Duncan's criminal intent. Duncan, Mack and Tench then steal the shipment after which Jackson alerts Walt, who, now recovered, pursues the outlaws with him. Duncan is mortally wounded in a gunfight against his son and Jackson, but when Tench attempts to shoot Walt, Duncan kills Tench to save his son. After Mack killed is in the ensuing gunfight, Walt and Jackson return the gold to the mine.
