The film has also effectively redefined the use of the term "zombie". While the word "zombie" itself is never used—the word used in the film is ghoul—Romero's film introduced the theme of zombies as reanimated, flesh-eating cannibals.
Night of the Living Dead has inspired several remakes and spawned a franchise that includes five official sequels released between 1978 and 2009, also directed by Romero.
The film and its successors spawned countless imitators, in cinema, television and video gaming, which borrowed elements invented by Romero. - DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsDavid EmgeKen ForeeScott H. Romero deliberately held off making a sequel to "Night of the Living Dead" for several years to avoid being stereotyped as a horror director.
Dawn of the Dead has received widespread critical acclaim since its initial release; like its predecessor, it has garnered a large, international cult following.
The film is often cited as being one of the few sequels that are superior to the original.
The film was selected as one of The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time by Empire magazine in 2008.
It was also named as one of The Best 1000 Movies Ever Made, a list published by The New York Times. - DirectorGeorge A. An intelligent, first-rate horror effort that stands out as one of the best genre films of the 80s.
Romero himself cited Day of the Dead as his personal favorite of his original trilogy of zombie films. - DirectorDan O'BannonStarsClu GulagerJames KarenDon CalfaWhen two bumbling employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air, the vapors cause the dead to rise again as zombies. When Russo and George A. Romero parted ways after their 1968 film "Night of the Living Dead", Russo retained the rights to any titles featuring Living Dead while Romero was free to create his own series of sequels.
Russo went on to write the comedy horror film "The Return of the Living Dead", which is known for introducing the popular concept of zombies eating brains, as opposed to eating human flesh, like previous zombie iterations. It is also known as the first film to ever show zombies running, as well as zombies being able to speak.
The film was a critical success and performed moderately well at the box office. Its enduring popularity has spawned four sequels and turned it into a cult classic. - DirectorTom SaviniStarsTony ToddPatricia TallmanTom TowlesWhen the unburied dead return to life and seek human victims, seven refugees shelter in a house in the Pennsylvanian countryside.Remake of Romero's 1968 horror film of the same title, penned by Romero and directed by Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead effects artist Tom Savini.
To keep the effects realistic, they used as inspiration a real autopsy, forensic pathology textbooks, and Nazi death camp footage. Savini said that he wanted to keep the film artistic despite his reputation as "the king of splatter". - DirectorZack SnyderStarsSarah PolleyVing RhamesMekhi PhiferA nurse, a policeman, a young married couple, a salesman and other survivors of a worldwide plague that is producing aggressive, flesh-eating zombies, take refuge in a mega Midwestern shopping mall.Remake of Romero's 1978 Dawn of the Dead and Zack Snyder's film directorial debut.
In the original film, the zombies moved very slowly. In the remake, the zombies are fast and agile and the film generally forsakes slow-mounting suspense in favor of frenetic action.
Many admirers of the original, as well as Romero himself, protested this change, feeling that it limited the impact of the undead. This is somewhat borne out by the fact that the remake has almost no close-up shots of zombies that last more than a second or two. Snyder mentions this in the commentary track of the remake's DVD, pointing out that they seem too human when the camera lingers upon them for longer. - DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsJohn LeguizamoAsia ArgentoSimon BakerThe living dead have taken over the world, and the last humans live in a walled city to protect themselves as they come to grips with the situation. The 4th film in Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" series.
The film is the highest budgeted film in the series (except for Snyder's remake, which does not count as part of the series). It looks good, with some great make-up effects.
The zombies are actually pretty intelligent and moderately fast at walking.
Romero does not consider any of his Dead films sequels since none of the major characters or story continue from one film to the next. - DirectorGeorge A. Romero made an extensive use of computer-generated imagery because it allowed him to shoot the film quickly and add the effects later.
Unfortunately, Diary of the Dead feels like a watered-down reboot of his classic franchise, modernized and targeted at teenagers.
The film belongs in the "found footage" genre and the lead character are constantly filming instead of helping his friends to survive. - DirectorGeorge A. Survival of the Dead offers glimmers of Romero's savage wit, but not nearly enough to make up for his unusually uninspired directing and a lack of new ideas
Coming from the guy who practically invented the zombie genre, the film can only be seen as a massive disappointment — easily the worst of his 'Dead' films.
It was the last film directed by Romero before his death in 2017.
