- DirectorDaria PriceStarsAndy ChenGregory ClarickPatricia CohenDriven to Abstraction unravels a mutating tale of self-delusion, greed, and fraud-- the $80 million forgery scandal that rocked the art world and brought down Knoedler, New York City's oldest and most venerable gallery. Was the gallery's esteemed director the victim of a con artist who showed up with an endless treasure trove of previously unseen abstract expressionist masterpieces? Or did she eventually suspect they were fakes, yet continue to sell them for many millions of dollars for fifteen years? Whatever the truth, two women from very different worlds were, wittingly or not, caught up in the greatest hoax ever of Modern American Art.Watched via: Amazon Prime

RE-watchability: 3*** (out of 5)
Commentary: A film that begins awkwardly and ends awkwardly as it tries to tell a complete story while leaving out the whole "start at the beginning" part. That's so overrated anyway. Everyone knows the best way to tell a story is to begin with the most interesting part and weave in the sorted details of both the back story and the eventual ending. No matter how hard it is for some viewers to keep up with.
This is still a solid doc about a (all too common) scam in the art world (which seems to have a new one every week). It delivers the goods with the story and interviews but manages to annoy with the structure of said story. (i.e. start at the beginning). - DirectorSara SeligmanStarsCamila MendesAdriana BarrazaAndres VelezEster and her overbearing mother run a small bed-and-breakfast near the US/Mexico border. Commentary: A slow paced thriller that gives the characters a bit of time to develop before throwing the ending at you is a nice change of pace. This one does exactly that. Now while I'll admit I had the ending figured out from the moment I read the synopsis but I did not know how they'd pull it off. It all made perfect sense. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by this thriller. - DirectorTed StensonStarsAndrew PhungPaul CowlingJay MorbergStudents, coaches, and players interact at a high school on the evening of a basketball game.Watched via: Tubi
Date: 01.03.22
RE-watchability: 4**** (out of 5)
Commentary: If Superstore were a movie about high school basketball then this would be it. The title is obnoxiously long but the film is not. It's basically a bunch of interconnected (but still seperate) stories playing out simultaneously during a basketball game. Much like Superstore it's filled with silly sight gags that matter nothing to any of the overall plot(s). But add to your enjoyment because of the silliness.
It's one of those films that is so subtle with the humor that much of it you'll laugh about later. Like the lady with the knitting who "films" the game on her old RCA VHS camcorder that never seems to follow the action. It's even funnier now that I think about it again.
I see that the rating for it is just a 5.8 (as of this writing) which surprises me but also doesn't. Subtle humor such as in this film is not everyone's cup of tea. I liked it. But many others may think it boring. And I can see that argument. But I'd happily watch it again. Good stuff. Entertaining AF. - DirectorBrian HensonStarsMichael CaineDave GoelzSteve WhitmireThe Muppets present their own touching rendition of Charles Dickens' classic tale.Watched via: Digital Copy

Commentary: I've always truly loved the Muppet movies starting with the 'Muppets Take Manhattan' in the mid 1990's. This one is a fantastic addition to that legacy. A timeless tale told in a new way with just enough changes to make it fresh. Both the human talent and the Puppeteers deserve kudos for a job well done. It's both hilarious and heart warming. Of course I'll watch ANYTHING with Gonzo and Rizzo as the stars. They crack me up just looking at them. So yes I LOVED it. - DirectorVeena SudStarsPeter SarsgaardMireille EnosJoey KingA father and daughter are on their way to dance camp when they spot the girl's best friend on the side of the road. RE-watchability: 3.5*** (out of 5)
Commentary: you watch this movie and the thing that kept popping into my head was why are they not using flashbacks to illustrate the fight between the girls that led to one of their deaths? turns out the answer was simple, REALLY fucked up and hilarious. I'm not gonna ruin it for you (surprisingly). Though that was merely a backdrop to the crazy parents slowly but surely losing their minds as they try desperately to cover their daughters awful crime(s). I think it deserves better than the current IMDb rating (5.8) but not by much. I enjoyed it but I can see how many people wouldn't. - DirectorColleen KrantzStarsBo BarkerKailey JohnsonBrandon MillerIt seems incomprehensible that there was a time in America's not-so-distant past when nearly a quarter of a million children from East Coast orphanages were loaded on trains and sent west, where they were presented "for the picking." West by Orphan Train will tell the story of these children, who were taken from a sometimes-rough existence to an unfamiliar rural setting during an era that lasted from 1854 to 1929. As some of the last of the still-living orphan train riders like to remind us, it was a different era - one that can't be judged without understanding what lives were like then. West by Orphan Train, a documentary film completed late in 2014, offers that understanding.Watched via: Amazon Prime

Commentary: This "feature" barely qualifies to even be on this list as it's under an hour long (but only by a minute or so). But it's so well done that it leaves you craving more. It's too bad the production couldn't have added 30 minutes to the runtime and include more of the stories that were merely mentioned in passing or the ones that, no doubt, had to be left on the cutting room floor. I'd be up to hear those. Excellent film anyway. - StarsLucie ArnazLucille BallDesi ArnazHome life of Desi & Lucy Arnaz, from beginning to end, actually, including clips of their early lives & family members.Watched via: Amazon Prime

Commentary: A stellar look at what really happened behind the scenes of TV's most iconic classic sitcom. Hosted by the real life children and told through the lens of home movies never before seen by the public. This is good stuff. Yes the most of the stories are well known but the kids commentary on the subjects is definitely new and worth the price of admission alone. - DirectorTorsten HoffmannMichael WatchulonisStarsAndreas M. Commentary: My god what a boring mess of a film. It resembles a poorly made educational film you'd see in college that tries to explain a topic but fails because by the time it's over you're asleep. I'm not even sure how I made it through, to be honest, it's that boring. I figured, judging by the synopsis, that I'd learned something new. Nope. Too bored to really pay attention after the first 45 minutes. - DirectorJeremy SimmonsStarsDavid CaseMichelle VisageBreast Implant sickness. She has her 30 year old implants removed. RE-watchability: 4**** (out of 5)
Commentary: An engrossing doc about a debate that has raged (off and on) over the years. Are breast implants safe? The film plays out as it's central character decides to have hers removed (i.e. explant). We then learn the history of the product. The film seems to desperately want a full-on condemnation of the practice but can never uncover enough evidence to do so. The closing interview with Dr. Rose is so illuminating as he reveals yes he believes some women do have adverse effects from implants. But among the thousands of women he's performed surgery on only a hand full have reported serious medical issues that can be directly attributed to the implants themselves. Very interesting. But none too surprising. Excellent doc. - DirectorScott BarberAdam SweeneyStarsJason AlisharanDrake BellMichael BowerA documentary film about the Nickelodeon Network, telling the story of its humble origins deep into the SNICK years.Watched via: Hulu

Commentary: A rose colored glasses look back at the founding of the company that made slime cool. The stars and the power players that made it all happen are here to fill in the details about the series that changed our world. Too bad they never touch upon any of the more interesting details of the stories. Like why was Salute Your Shorts cancelled after only 26 episodes? And what about the involvement of one Dan Schneider? Among many other topics (loses half a * for that). This doc left a lot to be desired. But it's still well produced and serves as a video love letter to both the people who created the magic and the ones who simply loved it. - DirectorFisher StevensMalcolm VenvilleStarsAlejandro AgagJules BianchiSam BirdProfessional drivers on the international Formula E circuit - like Formula One, but with eco-friendly electric cars - race for victory across 10 cities in this white-knuckle documentary.Watched via: Hulu

Commentary: I'm addicted to documentaries. Just the truth. But I'm especially in love with ones like this that let me visit a world I've always been intensely curious about but never had the time to fully explore. Getting to know the drivers and the stories that make the races more interesting. This doc did that, and more, and told the history of the world's first all electric racing series. It earns every point of that 6.8 (as of this writing) IMDb rating. Recommended. - DirectorGrant BaldwinStarsSimon BeckMartina HalikTania HalikFew venture into true mountain wilderness. RE-watchability: 2** (out of 5)
Commentary: Here's a doc that had tons of promise but pissed it away in it's silly quest to cram as many stories into a 90 minute runtime as possible. Instead they should have focused solely on the mother/daughter hiking adventure and what they went through. That would have made for an interesting movie. But what we got was clips of the ladies as they struggled across the forbidden wasteland in between unrelated stories of people living in remote locations (can anyone explain what the fuck that nun story was all about?). I was looking forward to this one but after watching it I hve to admit I was rather let down. While the story telling is good it's the fact that we never got enough of any of the stories to satisfy my taste. Stick to the base story about the ladies hiking and it would have been much more enjoyable. For me. - DirectorDon ArgottSheena M. Commentary: A doc that recounts the incredibly true tale of who actually co-created The Batman way back when. The film cleverly lays out the story in a pretty straight forward fashion that kept me on the edge of my seat. It will you too. It's well deserving of it's currently fantastic IMDb rating (8.0 as of this writing) and probably should be a bit higher. Check this gem out. - DirectorPierre MorathStarsDenis AlcadeNeil AmdurGaby Andersen-SchiessToday, all anybody needs to run is the determination and a pair of the right shoes. But just fifty years ago, running was viewed almost exclusively as the domain of elite male athletes who competed on tracks. With insight and propulsive energy, director Pierre Morath traces running۪s rise to the 1960s, examining how the liberation movements and newfound sense of personal freedom that defined the era took the sport out of the stadiums and onto the streets, and how legends like Steve Prefontaine, Fred Lebow, and Kathrine Switzer redefined running as a populist phenomenon.Watched via: Hulu

RE-watchability: 3*** (out of 5)
Commentary: A solid, if unspectacular, entry into the sub-genre of sports history docs. Well made but the constant jumping from one side of the story (from men to women) resulted in large parts of the sports history being left out. While they did cover the most famous name of all, Steve Prefontaine, he wasn't mentioned at all for the first half of the film, though his story was told eventually. Several other stories were built up to be important before being concluded with a passing comment later in the film (this is very frustrating to say the least). Still it's an enjoyable, though largely incomplete portrait of the history of running. - DirectorMichael BarnettStarsMack BeggsSarah Rose HuckmanTerry MillerTransgender high school athletes from across the country compete at the top of their fields, while also challenging the boundaries and perceptions of fairness and discrimination.Watched via: Hulu

Commentary: A movie about a trending national topic that's because a passion case for right wing homophobes who like to brag about how much their hurting trans kids by passing these soon to be obsolete laws banning them from playing sports. It's an eye opening inside look at a world most have never been. It's also not a black and white issue. This doc makes that very evident. This in-depth program chronicles her rise to pop superstardom and also offers a sensitive portrayal of a transformative star and the inner demons that inspired her work and eventually caused her untimely death. Her battle with addiction and her courtship with self destruction were well documented through the press. Even her troubled relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil was played out in front of British Media. But despite this backdrop, Amy Winehouse will be remembered for her unique song writing style fusing R & B, soul and jazz influences sang through a deep contralto vocal. The 'Back to Black' album symbolised her huge success at this time which led to an astonishing 5 Grammy awards- 'the most wins by a female artist in a single night'. This insightful programme is a definitive testimonial to an incredible music icon covering the start of her career up until her death.Watched via: Hulu

RE-watchability: 3.5*** (out of 5)
Commentary: The only thing I knew about Amy Winehouse before watching this was she died young due to a drug overdose and she had once been a huge star. This cheaply made film resembles an extended TMZ episode but is actually a pretty darn good film. It's too bad the budget was so low they couldn't afford to have former family and friends speak on the tragedies that lead to Amy's untimely end. Still enjoyable and informative. - DirectorSteven CantorStarsIsabella BoylstonZachary CatazaroPreston ChambleeFeaturing New York City Ballet's Prima Ballerina Tiler Peck - the first ever woman to be asked to curate The Music Center's famed BalletNOW program - and a diverse cast of world-class dancers from around the globe, the film follows Tiler as she tries to execute her groundbreaking vision of mashing together the worlds of tap, hip-hop, ballet and even clown artistry. Commentary: An interesting doc that was basically shot in the span of five days. Documenting the preparations for one of the few ballet shows ever directed by a woman (yes it's ANOTHER industry dominated by white males). It's a show intended to highlight where ballet is going. A mixture of dance styles with traditional ballet as the backdrop. I enjoyed it as I knew next to nothing about the industry before this and after I felt like I was much more knowledgeable. A good film, like this, will do that. - DirectorMaite AlberdiStarsSergio ChamyRomulo AitkenMarta OlivaresA private investigator in Chile hires someone to work as a mole at a retirement home where a client of his suspects the caretakers of elder abuse.Watched via: Hulu

RE-watchability: 3.5*** (out of 5)
Commentary: For me this was a long awaited watch as I only became aware of this film (like most others) when it received a nomination for Best Doc Feature at the 2021 Oscars. It's definitely a most unusual doc that some might say is scripted because it's THAT good. It's also an odd feature as it's about an older man (mid 80's) voluntarily entering into a retirement home to try and unearth evidence of alleged abuse. The fact that he finds none is really not relevant as the movie is much more about the characters the man encounters. It's a touching portrait of people who've been mostly forgotten by their families (that's typically why people place relatives in nursing homes) and yearning for love and companionship. The current IMDb rating (7.6) is accurate and it's definitely worthy of the Oscar nom it received. Great stuff. - DirectorKevin KerslakeStarsJoan JettDavid BowieEvelyn McDonnellDocumentary about rock star Joan Jett.Watched via: Hulu

Commentary: 95% of the fans of Joan Jett probably will not know the extent of the impact of her career. I certainly didn't till I watched this doc. My main exposure to her music was through the movie, the Runaways (which is excellent), but now having watched this I can include myself amongst her fans. She has my mad respect. This was also an excellent with some insightful commentary and great stories about the stuff that goes on behind the scenes. Commentary: Remember the old series on TLC called, "Untold Stories of the E.R."? If that series became a movie and didn't use actors and scripts this movie would be it. Following the daily trials of an understaffed, woefully under funded emergency room at a major urban hospital. The stories are gripping and the people featured are fascinating. Commentary: Another teen "sex" comedy that wants us to feel all romantic about the two leads when it's rather obvious the two have little chemistry. Still, despite a rather accurate IMDb rating, this was a fun film for the first hour or so. Then it became a game of will they or what they and that got old. It's like he's in love with her but when she falls in love with him then he's suddenly NOT in love with her anymore. Then she realizes she doesn't love him after all. What? While it has it's hilarious moments the story ultimately falls apart at the end due to unimaginative writing. Should have been soooo much better. - DirectorSonia KennebeckStarsJoel WidmanStuart AndersonNemo BaleticAn American family becomes entangled in a bizarre web of secrets and lies when their hacker son is targeted by the U.S. government, making them all ENEMIES OF THE STATE.Watched via: Hulu

Commentary: Here is a story not about a man named Jed but about a family that lies through their teeth to protect their idiot son. He was allegedly an early member of the legendary group, Anonymous, and ran a server for the whistleblowers to upload files onto. Or did he. The family claims they were being harassed by the U.S. government because of a USB memory stick and the secrets with in it. Problem is, like most conspiracy theories you need actual evidence to prove any allegations and they never have that. (though if you're a Trumper or visitor to gateway pundit you don't need that you just predicting it'll be true until it blows up in your face. Then you pretend it never happened). The is well made, better than most fictional dramas, and should be seen just because it's that entertaining. Recommended. - DirectorMarah StrauchErik AngraStarsAnthony AnzaldoGerry BlaisChynaThe rise and fall of wrestler Joanie Chyna Laurer, whose life was cut short in 2016. RE-watchability: 4**** (out of 5)
Commentary: Not every superstar on a downward spiral can be saved like Scott Hall or Jake Roberts. Some had been on a perpetual downhill slide for two decades and refused help from all takers. Like Chyna. Who typically then blamed the person for her own failings and cut them out of her life. This film is so sad but illuminating as to what ended up happening to one of the greatest female wrestlers ever. The movie itself contains shocking revelations about both Chyna and the producers. And relives one of the dumbest moments in wrestling history when Triple Big Nose (HHH) claims that because he's a father now (I feel sorry for that kid) he can't see Chyna being elected to the WWE Hall of Fame BECAUSE his kid might find out Chyna did porn. Yet they just elected a guy (undeserving) that used to play a PIMP on their TV with real whores following him to the ring. The stupidity, jealousy (of HHH/Stephanie) is astounding and pathetic.
It's still a fine doc that serves as a reminder about the ravages of mental illness and constant drug abuse. We miss you, Chyna. Commentary: A doc with no narrator can sometimes be a good thing but not in this case. The story of the infamous Sex Pistols punk rock band is told by the band members themselves and boy is it hard to follow. This is a tough watch due to the sometimes indecipherable accents, seemingly unrelated detours that feature home video footage of the band rambling incoherently. And the most annoying thing had to be the surviving band members appearing in black outs for some reason. Are they that ashamed? Pretty sure this is a straight donate. - DirectorDerek DrymonJennifer KluskaStarsAndy SambergSelena GomezKathryn HahnAfter one experiment, Johnny turns into a monster and everyone else becomes human. Still it was nice to see the old gang back together for another fun filled adventure. Yeah that's what a sane person would do. Most of the rest of the film is Peter yammering on and on about topics unrelated to anything else in the film. Commentary: A truly funny teen out-all-night flick starring a bunch of unknowns. But boy you wouldn't know it by watching. Good enough to make the movie interesting, endless one-liners (almost all of which are funny), relatable characters that actually grow a little during the journey and a satisfying ending (that's not even a little bit of a surprise). The first half of the film is especially funny as Nina (the hilarious Izzy Weaver) steals most every scene while drunk. And yes the second half does slow down a little with Nina being hungover it allowed for all the characters to get some screen time. I am not complaining.
I went into this movie with the simple hope of it being good because it's been a while since I saw a movie like this. Commentary: I never understood why Tom and Jerry were not as big as Scooby-Doo (where like T&J every episode or movie is basically the same) considering the endless possibilities for stories. While that may never come to be it's still fantastic to have this new romp to enjoy. It's your usual Tom and Jerry beat each others brains out, then team to take on the baddie and end up helping someone out plot. Followed by a Happy ending. And that's exactly what you have here. And it's glorious. When you have a winning formula like this (or in Scooby-Doo!) you don't mess with it. Because people like ME will take all of it we can get. Commentary: I really do think that John Hughes thought he could continue this series, and it's unrivaled success at the box office, with an all new cast if he were the writer. Sadly, he was wrong. While the new lead is funny at times he lacks that magic that made the original films so great. About the only thing that was truly funny about this was the final moments and what he did to the baddies. Some of this stuff rivaled the originals. But overall this outing was just missing that special spark. It felt flat for most of the film. Commentary: Even a large allowance for the fact that this was a first film for almost everyone involved does not excuse the horrific shit show I just watched. Not a single actor in this film was convincing. Though Julie Tronchin (Summer) was probably the best (not exactly a compliment) that's a really low bar. The on screen performances were only the most visible problem.
The flick is devoid of actual laughs, the sound is hilariously bad, the editing is even worse and the hockey action is unconvincing. It's just a really bad film. Worse than many student films.
Highlight: One of the worst moments (and there was plenty) was the scene between the American and Canadian coach where they decide to become a joint unit to play Sweden (stupid plot twist). While Temple is not at her comedic best (she does seem a bit bored) she's turns in an enjoyable performance that plays perfect counter part to the outright silliness of Clifton Webb's Mr. Belvedere. He's basically a one man show for much of the early part of the film and we are rewarded for watching him. He's simply hilarious and makes everyone around him so much better (even an old pro like Temple). Enjoyable from the opening credits to the closing scene.

There's no cheesy romance between two WHITE c-list actors, nor is their a cozy all WHITE small town as the setting. This film does have a romance but it's not nearly as cheesy as the ones in those other movies. And this one shines particularly when Brian Dennehy and Fred Dalton are on-screen. A beautiful coming-of-age love story that actually focuses on the slow bond that forms between the teenagers and we get to watch as they actually fall in love. It's so not what I expected. And was so much better than I had any right to expect. The leads are magnetic, their chemistry is palpable and the climax of the film, while a bit contrived (and doesn't really resolve anything) was still the perfect ending. A happy ending.
So if you're one of those fans of lesbian cinema that has to have the usual subplot that spends a 3rd of the runtime building up the villain only to see him or her walk away scott free in the end you're out of luck. I can't say it was exactly a waste of time watching but I also can't say it was time well spent. Actually it was neither. It was just kind of THERE. The stories were mostly solid and the acting was quite good (look at the cast and you'd expect nothing less) it's just too bad the writers didn't feel like being more decisive in their decisions about the characters final outcomes. The world is playing a joke on her and we're all in on it, right? Or maybe she's playing a joke on us by starring in such horrifically bad movies as this craptastic feature. The plot is just plain stupid, the acting is decent but kind of cringey and the whole production wants to be a Disney like fairy tale but fails miserably. Headlined by a cast of virtual unknowns except for Julie Bowen (as a grandmother) who isn't the star but certainly gives the movie star power and it's much needed emotional center. While the real star is Gemma Brooke Allen (who is rock solid) in a breakout role as a girl searching for clues about her late parents. Commentary: I've previously watched a movie about the 85 Bears that was much more broad as it covered the building of the team from Ditka's arrival, the entire 85 season in detail (not just bits and pieces) and the aftermath (probably the most interesting part). This one chose a different route as it focused exclusively on the personalities of the team instead of the on-field play. The thing I liked most about this doc was the candid interviews that pretty much covered everything. A lot fun stuff here. Sadly that can't cancel out the absence of details about the 85 regular season. It's like it hardly even happened. Made the film a whole lot less enjoyable. The most obvious take away from this movie is that the script is not top notch (still pretty good) and some of the acting is cringeworthy. But taken as a whole the movie entertained me. Ava Justin as Lisa was a standout as was the Alex character who was hilariously silly. And as a bonus the film threw in some liberal talking points on social issues just for fun. It can be very frustrating. Fortunately for me I can do the research and figure out the truth on 99% of these cases.
In this case the concert/doc was well worth the search because Pam Tillis is a blast from the past and a wonderful reminder of the early 90's country music boom. She was still in great form in the twilight of her career at the time of this taping in 2005. This brings back so many great memories and has a new recording of one of my favorite songs of all time, Maybe It Was Memphis. It also reveals something I long suspected about Tillis is she shares the sense of humor of her father (Country legend Mel Tillis) especially when she's teasing her family or the band. It's still wildly entertaining with some fun performances from actors usually portraying second (or third) tier characters. The twist in this one though is the girls are high for most of the movie. Which leads to complications that you've seen in a hundred other similar movies but they are still laugh out loud funny. Brittany Snow (who I love) is just not a good fit for a violent action movie nor a good partner to the perfectly cast Dave Bautista. Casting though is only one problem for this film another is the storyline, which makes little to no sense, and has a bizarre ending that comes out of nowhere and is, to be blunt, just plain stupid. This one probably isn't his best but it could hold it's own if it's measured against those others. He not only produced the movie but gave a fine performance as it's star and central figure. Often hilarious and surprisingly heartfelt as well. The story is one that has many surprises like instead of immediately dismissing the thought of a romantic relationship between Crystal and Haddish, due to the age difference, it was left to linger in the air. The cast is rather subpar (especially Colin Firth), but the visuals are something to write home about too bad the ending is rather stupid and pointless. Which, to be honest, the entire movie feels that way after having watched it. While I did enjoy it I still have to admit that the entire production seemed to be missing that one or two elements that made it anything memorable. - DirectorTy RobertsStarsLuke WilsonVinessa ShawWayne KnightHaunted by his mysterious past, a devoted high-school football coach leads a scrawny team of orphans to the state championship during the Great Depression and inspires a broken nation along the way.Watched via: HDD (Digital Copy)

Commentary: I watched this because I recognized the name of one of the stars (she used to be on that horrific trainwreck reality show, Dance Moms) and wanted to check out her out as she gives acting a try. Her skills are so-so. She does though come off as natural on camera so there's potential. Too bad the movie itself was annoying. Although I really liked the supernatural elements late in the movie (especially the girl texting her dead mom) several other elements were just mind bogglingly stupid. One of those was the horrible mother who found God (the GOP Jesus version) and decided she was no longer a horrible mother because, "God forgave me", and then insisted that her daughter (the one she had treated like shit for years) must forgive her now as well (this scene has to be seen to be believed). Commentary: In the world of movies it''s rare to see one type of film step into another genre and be successful. Such as characters from animated shorts (like Looney Tunes) releasing a full length film such as this. While this film is not fantastic (despite the rating) it's not bad either. It's just kind of 80 minutes or so of pure joy which leaves you wanting more laughs at the end. You really enjoyed it you just wish there had been more to it. That's exactly how I felt about this one. A second looney feature, that also starred Daddy Duck (Fantastic Island), was much funnier (if for no other reason than to hear Yosemite Sam cuss) but you should still make your best effort to see both. That matters little as you'll likely forget that as you battle to keep awake from boredom of the rehashed tales included in this snoozer. They really didn't even try to find any new, or interesting, angles to include. They pretty much just mailed it in for this one. Halfway decent movie but could have been loads better. Commentary: Kurt Warner was the reason I began watching again in the early 2000's when he and the St. Louis Rams were the "Greatest Show on Turf" for one magical season that resulted in a Super Bowl victory. I figured all the way back then that some day someone would try and make a movie about his life. It took many years longer than I thought but here it is...FINALLY.
Boy was it worth the wait. Oscar nominee worthy story, superior casting, great story and visuals. The football action is believable and there's lot of it. It truly has it all. Though the "God, God, God" stuff was a bit much at times you understand it in the context of the film (based on a true story). The only minor flaw was the lack of screen time for Warner's step daughter in the film who seemed like an after thought as the flick gave all of the air time to the relationship between Kurt and the step-son. Rather disappointing. Otherwise I do believe I'd be willing to give this sports masterpiece a 5***** rating. - DirectorAmy PoehlerStarsLucie ArnazBette MidlerCarol BurnettThis film will explore the rise of comedian icon Lucille Ball, her relationship with Desi Arnaz, and how their groundbreaking sitcom I Love Lucy forever changed Hollywood, cementing her legacy long after her death in 1989.Watched via: Amazon Prime

Commentary: I seem to watch a lot of films that star newcomers (unknowns) for some strange reason. And it's, admittedly, a mixed bag usually. Some are horrific trainwrecks and others are fantastic. Still others are pleasant surprises in that they are simply a solid film that was well cast and nicely written. This is one of those films. It's clear to see that the two leads are not professional actors as they, at times, struggle to maintain their character. But all things considered they both did a great job. The same can be said for the writer/producer(s) in that while some of the creative decisions were questionable the talent was on full display and some allowance can be given for small mistakes. Commentary: Can anyone, anyone at all, explain to me why the fuck they made a movie about a wannabe cowboy/country music star? And then that half-baked idea gets stuffed with some unrelated GARBAGE about that loser Chris Kyle (the American Sniper "hero") to fill out the runtime. This movie was utterly confusing.
Though to be honest Cody is a talented story teller and made a great choice for that ability alone. Problem is his story is so filled with holes (why did the first Warner contract offer fall through? Why was the day he got a new contract the "worst day of his life") that it leaves more questions than answers. Which means the runtime is shortened considerably and needs to be filled with some unrelated trash about Chris Kyle (who is in no way related to Cody Johnson, his family or his story...they've never even met). UGH. Of course one also wonders why Cody got the movie in the first place. His list of accomplishments begins with headlining some festivals in Texas and ends with having a couple of MINOR hits. The title song of the feature wasn't even a hit. It's comical. And that's his complete list.
Though that all pales in comparison to the confusing decision to have a story about Chris Kyle in the middle of this, other wise unrelated, film. What in the living hell possessed the idiot-in-charge to produce that far-right vomit? Again, to remind you, Chris Kyle has never met Cody Johnson, they have no relationship, they are not kin, they have no connection in anyway and Cody Johnson does not even mention him in anyway throughout his commentary. Commentary: In the world of documentaries making a movie about a lone central figure is always risky. Because if you pick wrong and choose a focus point that has no charisma or ability to tell a story (or refuses to divulge details of his/her story because of...reasons) then you end up with a trainwreck of a movie that you then must fill out with unrelated garbage (See Dear Rodeo: The Cody Johnson Story). The film is supposed to be about a woman making a doc about homosexuality in small town, USA (of what turns out to be Iowa) but that storyline amounts to nothing more than a few scenes with people we know nothing about and it pretty much goes nowhere. The main plot involves a romance that kinda works and kinda doesn't. And of course we also get (and since the director is a man you should have expected it)...a sexual assault. It's not a low budget garbage LGBT movie without an attempted rape. Typically Elizabeth Olsen lights up the screen with her quirky coolness and while we do see sparks of it in this one it's held down by her lack of story. Compounding that is making a creative decision that, in the context of the films plot, makes absolutely no sense what so ever (the lead gets robbed and even though she takes away his knife and stabs him with it he STILL takes her stuff. He probably did very little actual donating to the people he was supposedly the benefactors of but his presense at events generated press coverage so in turn it works out for the candidate in question. This movie, which is not focused on that, still revealed that reality. I find that fascinating. The other stuff in the movie has been well documented and wasn't all that interesting. One minor complaint I have is the storyline's twist near the end where Dean Jones love interest becomes the jockey instead of the daughter. I didn't really care for that. Titles like Good Boys (which is a more adult version) and Madison Baker Was Here (an all girls version and much funnier on a smaller budget) are two that come to mind.
