David Cronenberg, also known as the King of Venereal Horror or the Baron of Blood, was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in 1943. His father, Milton Cronenberg, was a journalist and editor, and his mother, Esther (Sumberg), was a piano player. After showing an inclination for literature at an early age (he wrote and published eerie short stories, thus following his father's path) and for music (playing classical guitar until he was 12), Cronenberg graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in Literature after switching from the science department. He reached the cult status of horror-meister with the gore-filled, modern-vampire variations of Shivers (1975) and Rabid (1977), following an experimental apprenticeship in independent film-making and in Canadian television programs.
Cronenberg gained popularity with the head-exploding, telepathy-based Scanners (1981) after the release of the much underrated, controversial, and autobiographical The Brood (1979). Cronenberg become a sort of a mass media guru with Videodrome (1983), a shocking investigation of the hazards of reality-morphing television and a prophetic critique of contemporary aesthetics. The issues of tech-induced mutation of the human body and topics of the prominent dichotomy between body and mind were back again in The Dead Zone (1983) and The Fly (1986), both bright examples of a personal film-making identity, even if both films are based on mass-entertainment materials: the first being a rendition of a Stephen King best-seller, the latter a remake of a famous American horror movie.
With Dead Ringers (1988) and Naked Lunch (1991), the Canadian director, no more a mere genre movie-maker but a fully realized auteur, got the acclaim of international critics. Such profound statements on modern humanity and ever-changing society are prominent in the provocative Crash (1996) and in the virtual reality essay of eXistenZ (1999), both of which well fared at the Cannes and Berlin Film Festivals. In the last two film projects Spider (2002) and A History of Violence (2005), Cronenberg avoids expressing his teratologic and oneiric expressionism in favor of a more psychological exploration of human contradictions and idiosyncrasies.Films Directed:

Independent Spirit/NAACP Image Award nominated filmmaker David Midell began his career drawing inspiration from working as a therapist for children and adults with disabilities in Chicago. As a filmmaker on the autism spectrum himself, his work asks important questions about how society treats its most vulnerable citizens, including those with disabilities and mental health challenges.

The film was released in theaters in 2014, made its network television premiere on the Lifetime Movie Network in 2015, and won numerous awards including a Prism Award from the Entertainment Industries Council. His previous film, The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain, tells the true story of the events that led to the death of an elderly African American former marine with bipolar disorder, who was killed during a conflict with police officers in his home. The film stars Tony Award nominee Frankie Faison, Tony Award winner Anika Noni Rose, and is executive produced by Lori McCreary, Gary Lucchesi, and Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman of Revelations Entertainment.
The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain was released theatrically in late 2021 to critical acclaim, including appearing on nearly 2 dozen critics' yearly top ten lists. The film's lead actor Frankie Faison won a Gotham Award for OUTSTANDING LEAD PERFORMANCE, and the film was nominated for multiple Independent Spirit Awards and an NAACP Image Award.

On Christmas Eve 2020, "Roald & Beatrix: The Tale Of The Curious Mouse" premiered on Sky One. A feature-length film about the meeting of two of Britain's finest children's authors, it stars Dawn French and won Best TV Movie at the Banff World Media Festival.
David honed his comedy chops in TV, winning Best Comedy BAFTA for "That Mitchell and Webb Look", starring David Mitchell, Robert Webb and Olivia Colman. As lead director of student house-share comedy "Fresh Meat", written by Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong, David brought together the cast and set the show's style. The show won 6 awards, including the RTS for Best Comedy. David also helmed all six films in the first season of "Inside No.9", the acclaimed anthology written by Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton. "A Midsummer Night's Dream", David's bold new feature-length version of Shakespeare's comedy from a script by Russell T. Davies, was described by The Radio Times as "stunningly ballsy...utterly life-affirming." It won an RTS Craft Award and was nominated for a BAFTA.
David is also a celebrated commercials director. "Playthings", his darkly comic gun-control PSA secured a place in the permanent collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art.Films Directed:

As both writer and director, David Twohy has contributed much to the film world, helping to elevate movies in such a way that Entertainment Weekly was prompted to name him "one of the 100 most creative people in Hollywood." In his career, Twohy has worked with on-screen notables like Harrison Ford, Judi Dench, Kevin Costner, Vin Diesel, Thandie Newton, Tommy Lee Jones, Jeff Daniels, Richard E. Grant, Chris Hemsworth, Demi Moore, Bruce Greenwood, Olivia Williams, Tim Olyphant and Milla Jovovich. To name a few.
Twohy struck gold early with his screenplay for the Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones vehicle "THE FUGITIVE," nominated in 1993 for Best Screenplay Previously Produced or Published. Other writing-only credits include "WATERWORLD," "TERMINAL VELOCITY," and Ridley Scott's "G.I. JANE."
As a director, Twohy made his debut with "THE GRAND TOUR," which he adapted from Henry Kuttner and C. L. Moore's haunting novella "Vintage Season." The movie received the Grand Prix at the Festival Du Film Fantastique and a Golden Scroll from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror. Twohy was honored again with a Saturn Award for his follow-up directing effort, "THE ARRIVAL."
Twohy's next effort became one of 2000's most unexpected films, "PITCH BLACK." Released by Universal Studios, this modestly budgeted movie shot in the Australian outback startled critics and audiences alike with its chilling mood and unexpectedly deep characters. The success of "PITCH BLACK" would launch a new film franchise for Universal. Its sequels were the sweeping "CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK" and the spartan survival movie "RIDDICK."
Between franchise movies, Twohy found time to write and direct two stand-alone thrillers: "BELOW," co-written with Darren Aronofsky ("REQUIEM FOR A DREAM"), follows a series of eerie occurrences on a claustrophobic submarine during World War II. Twohy then turned to the wide open vistas of Hawaii to film "A PERFECT GETAWAY," a twisted tale that shocked audiences around the world.
Next up for Twohy is "RUNNING WITH LIONS," a contemporary story about the world of Formula One.Films Directed:

Dave Grohl, Foo Fighters front-man, will always be remembered as the drummer for Nirvana. But, drumming for a great band such as Nirvana is not Dave's only claim in the world of music. Dave's musical career began at age 15 as the guitarist and later as the drummer for a punk band called "Freak Baby". A year later, he was behind the drums for "Mission Impossible" and later that summer drumming for "Dain Bramage". Another year down the road, an opportunity to drum with one of his favorite punk bands, "Scream", was just too great to pass up. This leads us to 1990 when "Scream" seemed to be coming to an end and "Nirvana" was in need of a drummer. While recording and touring with "Nirvana", Dave continued to write lyrics and music that he would record during breaks with "Nirvana". After the tragic end of "Nirvana", Dave eventually turned to his music to create Foo Fighters. While playing guitar and singing with Foo Fighters is his main job, you can also find Dave channeling his musical genius throughout the world of rock. Dave has drummed for Queens of the Stone Age and Killing Joke. He has also recorded and guest performed with his buddies Tenacious D. All the while recording for his own hardcore project, "Probot".Films Directed:

Born in Mt. Vernon, New York, and raised in New Jersey, David Chase (born David DeCesare) dreamed of being a star drummer in a rock band! He spent many years playing drums and bass trying to be part of a successful rock band in the 1960s East Coast music scene. He also loved movies, such as The Public Enemy (1931) with James Cagney and TV shows like The Untouchables (1959) with Robert Stack. When not making music, he watched 1960s' Hollywood and foreign films avidly. After his music career ended, he got the inspiration to buy a movie camera and make his own movies. He studied at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and later the graduate film program at Stanford University. He began writing for network TV drama programs in the early 1970s. He eventually became a writer and producer on the classic NBC detective show The Rockford Files (1974) with James Garner. While on "Rockford", he penned many memorable episodes and pieces of dialog. He won his first Emmy in 1978, the year "Rockford" won the award for Best Dramatic Series. Many biographies incorrectly state that Chase won his first Emmy for writing the acclaimed TV movie, Off the Minnesota Strip (1980). Although it is a sensitive and well observed story about a young runaway trying to make sense of her life after being returned to her Midwestern family from a life of prostitution in New York City, Chase actually won his second Emmy (and a Writer's Guild Award) for that project. He then spent the 1980s and early 1990s getting paid for writing various TV scripts while writing feature film projects that never got produced. He also began directing his TV scripts whenever possible. He often told people stories about the troubled relationship he shared back in New Jersey with his mother. Encouraged to write about it, he found a way to combine a story about his mother with a mob story and a story about psychotherapy, which Chase had also began during this time. This intersection of ideas and themes led Chase to write the landmark pilot script to a show that the Fox network developed, then passed on shooting. HBO then decided to roll the dice with Chase on this odd mixture of mother/son conflict, mobster danger and insecurities about psychological therapy. The result: The Sopranos (1999). Everybody connected with the project thought they would film a pilot episode, it would not go to series and that would be that. It has since gone on to become one of the most successful shows to ever come out of a cable network. Chase and his crew have collected Emmy, Golden Globe, Writer's Guild and Director's Guild Awards for the show. In terms of impact and subject matter, it has been compared to The Godfather (1972). Chase vows to get his feature film projects off the ground, as soon as "The Sopranos" ends its run.Films Directed:

Born on October 16, 1947 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, director/writer/producer David Zucker, along with brother Jerry (Ghost, 1990) Zucker and longtime friend, Jim (Hot Shots, 1991) Abrahams, has established himself among Hollywood's (or at least Wisconsin's) most successful filmmakers.
Starting out after college, with a borrowed video tape deck and camera, the soon to be legendary trio created the Kentucky Fried Theater, on the UW Madison campus, and moved to California in 1972, quickly becoming the most successful small theater group. in Los Angeles history. After parlaying this success into The Kentucky Fried Movie, the three conceived the idea that would create a whole new film genre. Airplane! (1980) broke all conventions, featuring dramatic actors like Robert Stack and Leslie Nielsen performing zany jokes with straight-laced sincerity. The spoof became the surprise hit of 1980, beginning a streak of hilarious movies including Top Secret! (1984) and Ruthless People (1986), after which David branched out on his own to direct The Naked Guns (1988, 1991, 1994), BASEketball (1998), Scary Movies 3 (2003), and 4 (2006), and others.
David also found time to produce the successful, but somewhat less hilarious A Walk in The Clouds (1995) and Phone Booth (2002), and recently completed a feature script, The Star of Malta, a comedy set in the Film Noir era, and an international spy thriller, "Counter Intellijence!".
Outside of the entertainment world, David has been a prominent advocate of environmental causes, having served on the board of TreePeople, an LA based organization committed to promoting community based tree planting and ecological solutions. David has worked closely with founder Andy Lipkis, taking a major role in charting the direction of the organization, and while doing so, receiving numerous honors, including the annual Evergreen Award.Films Directed:

He graduated from high school in 1992 and Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in 1996, where he played club hockey.
He served on animation staff on The Oblongs (2001) and Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) before working his way up to director on episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005). His work there stood out to Lucasfilm Animation when he was hired to oversee direction on Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008). Due to his love for the franchise, he thought the initial phone call for the job was a practical joke. He worked alongside George Lucas on creating the series, which was canceled after six seasons when the Walt Disney Company acquired the studio. He was kept on staff to create Star Wars: Rebels (2014), which continued the character arc of fan favorite Ahsoka Tano, originally introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008). The youngest of five, David Arquette was born in Winchester, Virginia and is part of the illustrious Arquette family, whose work has spread over several generations. His parents, Lewis Arquette, an actor, and Brenda Denaut (née Nowak), an acting teacher and therapist, had 4 other children: Rosanna Arquette, Richmond Arquette, Patricia Arquette, and Alexis Arquette, all actors. His paternal grandfather, Cliff Arquette, was also an entertainer. David's mother was from an Ashkenazi Jewish family (from Poland and Russia), while David's father had French-Canadian, Swiss-German, and English ancestry.
Like his siblings, Arquette started working at an early age, and his first major role came as Luke Perry's character's best friend in the hit film Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992). But his major break both personally and professionally didn't come until 1996 when he was cast in the slasher flick Scream (1996) starring opposite close friend Drew Barrymore, Neve Campbell and more importantly Friends (1994), with Courteney Cox who he married in San Francisco in the summer of 1999. Scream (1996) earned worldwide success and acclaim as did Arquette for his role as lovable simple cop "Dewey". His role proved to be so popular that in the original script his character was meant to die, but due to test audiences response to Dewey the script was changed and he returned for both Scream 2 (1997) and Scream 3 (2000). Usually known for his goofiness in more mainstream roles, his greatest performances and reviews have come for his indie films such as Johns (1996), Dream with the Fishes (1997) and The Grey Zone (2001). David Diamond and David Weissman's partnership is rooted in a 30 year friendship that dates back to their high school days together at Akiba Hebrew Academy in Philadelphia. They parted company for college while Diamond majored in Cinema Studies at NYU and Weissman studied Chinese history, first at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and then at the University of Michigan. Weissman received two Masters Degrees in the subject, one from the University of Wisconsin and the second from Brown University, before setting aside academic aspirations to join Diamond, who had settled in Los Angeles to pursue a writing career.
The partners sold their first spec script, "The Whiz Kid" to 20th Century Fox in 1994. They followed with a series of original ideas for comedies, beginning with "Guam Goes to the Moon" and their first produced credit in 2000, Universal Pictures' "The Family Man," starring Nicolas Cage and Tea Leoni. A collaboration with Ivan Reitman came next with Diamond and Weissman writing the Dreamworks Pictures sci-fi comedy "Evolution."
In 2005, Diamond and Weissman partnered with "Wedding Crashers" producer Andrew Panay on a series of feature comedies yielding five consecutive pitch sales and two additional produced credits, "Old Dogs," starring John Travolta and Robin Williams (2009), and the romantic comedy "When In Rome," starring Kristin Bell and Josh Duhamel (2010).
Also in 2005, the team wrote their first television pilot script, for 20th Television and CBS. The resulting untitled pilot starred John Leguizamo. More pilot sales followed for both half-hour comedies and one-hour dramas at NBC, ABC, FOX, and TBS.
Now in the fourth decade of their friendship, and the third decade of their writing partnership, Diamond and Weissman continue to explore concept and character driven stories that add up to more than the sum of their parts. In their more than twenty years collaborating with producers, directors, actors and studio executives, markets have changed dramatically and trends have come and gone, but what is real and true, and ultimately uplifting, continues to resonate with audiences. This is the audience to whom, and for whom, Diamond and Weissman continue to write every day.
Diamond and Weissman are both married and have five children between them, from middle school to college age.Films Directed:

Born in precisely the kind of small-town American setting so familiar from his films, David Lynch spent his childhood being shunted from one state to another as his research scientist father kept getting relocated. He attended various art schools, married Peggy Lynch and then fathered future director Jennifer Lynch shortly after he turned 21. That experience, plus attending art school in a particularly violent and run-down area of Philadelphia, inspired Eraserhead (1977), a film that he began in the early 1970s (after a couple of shorts) and which he would work on obsessively for five years. The final film was initially judged to be almost unreleasable weird, but thanks to the efforts of distributor Ben Barenholtz, it secured a cult following and enabled Lynch to make his first mainstream film (in an unlikely alliance with Mel Brooks), though The Elephant Man (1980) was shot through with his unique sensibility. Its enormous critical and commercial success led to Dune (1984), a hugely expensive commercial disaster, but Lynch redeemed himself with the now classic Blue Velvet (1986), his most personal and original work since his debut. He subsequently won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival with the dark, violent road movie Wild at Heart (1990), and achieved a huge cult following with his surreal TV series Twin Peaks (1990), which he adapted for the big screen, though his comedy series On the Air (1992) was less successful. He also draws comic strips and has devised multimedia stage events with regular composer Angelo Badalamenti. He had a much-publicized affair with Isabella Rossellini in the late 1980s.Films Directed:

Best known for the inspirational sports dramas Hoosiers (1986) and Rudy (1993), David Anspaugh has enjoyed a long career as a director and producer of film and television. Born in Decatur, Indiana in 1946 to Lawrence Anspaugh, a portrait photographer, and his wife, Marie, he was a member of his high school's football, basketball, and track teams. As a student majoring in secondary education at Indiana University, Anspaugh shot his own short movies and filmed concerts, football games, and Vietnam War protests using a 16mm camera. After graduation he moved to Aspen, Colorado, where he worked as a substitute teacher, waiter, and ski instructor before relocating to Los Angeles to attend film school at the University of Southern California. At the time he couldn't imagine ever working in Hollywood, although that would change in just a few years.
Anspaugh started his career as a producer and director of acclaimed TV shows Hill Street Blues (1981), St. Elsewhere (1982), and Miami Vice (1984). He made the transition to feature films when his best friend from IU, Angelo Pizzo, wrote "Hoosiers" and wanted Anspaugh to direct. The scene in "Hoosiers" in which the Hickory Huskers and their coach enter the enormous and empty Butler Fieldhouse was suggested by Anspaugh. Seven years later the two friends reteamed to make the college-football movie "Rudy." Anspaugh insisted on casting Sean Astin in the lead role, even though studio executives wanted someone tall and athletic. And it was Anspaugh's idea to hire NFL Films to shoot the movie's game footage. Anspaugh and Pizzo also collaborated on 1950s World Cup soccer film The Game of Their Lives (2005). Anspaugh has rounded out his career by directing motion pictures and TV movies on many topics other than sports.
In 2014 Anspaugh relocated from Santa Monica, California to Bloomington, Indiana, where he taught a class at IU, directed local theater productions, and served as an executive producer on films.Films Directed:

You could almost say David Price's career began at birth. Price is the son of former Columbia and Universal studio President and Producer, Frank Price. (Ghostbusters, Gandhi, Tootsie, Out of Africa) and grandson to television pioneer Roy Huggins (Maverick, The Fugitive, 77 Sunset Strip)
In 2007 Price took a hiatus from the entertainment business to pursue his interest in the food world. As Owner/Executive chef of Terra restaurant in Malibu, he garnered coveted reviews from Zagat, being named favorite local restaurant. Price also owned Malibu Foods which catered food to the large music festival industry such as Coachella and Stage Coach festivals.
Now back in full swing ... Price is co-producing "Knight Rider" : The Movie from creator Glen A. Larson..
In 2009 Price directed the award winning short, "Laredo". Winning Best Cinematography and a Special Recognition Award from The Boston International Film Festival.
Oskar Fischinger: The Creative Spirit (Documentary) was a MOCA special documentary project that David produced and edited which debuted at the museum in 2000 before making a national tour ending at New York's Museum Of Modern Art.
Price recently produced and directed Miramax/Disney's "Passport to the World", a family travel series which he created. Passport takes families through a city with kids in mind. Passport to the world features presenters - Gail Porter and Reggie Yates.
In 1996 Price directed and created Savoy Pictures' "Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde". A comedy based on the Robert Louis Stevenson classic, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll & Ms. Hyde stars Sean Young ("No Way Out", "Ace Ventura"), Tim Daly ("Diner", "Wings"), Lysette Anthony ("Husbands & Wives" ) and Harvey Fierstein ("Mrs. Doubtfire"). The Hollywood Reporter wrote: "An amusing sex farce buoyed by spirited performances and state of the art effects". Starburst Magazine said: "Price's impressively mounted fantasy... hits the belly laugh button more than once and causes a constant stream of sniggers... exactly the right commercial note. Price keeps the pace at breakneck speed".
In 1992 Price directed the highly successful Miramax/Dimension film, Children of the Corn II; grossing over 10 million dollars at the U.S. box office. Playboy magazine noted: "Price has the right stuff." and The Los Angeles Times wrote: "Director David Price doesn't flinch... Price's direction is better than this material deserves." From overseas, Britain's Starburst Magazine touted: "..the Price is right!... a well-mounted continuation of the 1984 saga... Skillfully paced horror from David Price."
With just under a million dollars to make the film, Miramax was elated with the results. In October '93, Corn II was released on video with over 80,000 units being shipped... adding an additional $4,000,000 to its domestic till. Corn II's worldwide gross is expected to reach over $25 million dollars. Children of the Corn II was added to Variety's Winner Circle list of 1993 for all time highest grossing Independent films.
Soon after Price co-produced, Leprechaun (Lionsgate/Trimark) starring Jennifer Aniston. Over eight sequels have been filmed since it's initial release.
David Price's professional career began as an actor. He studied at the highly acclaimed Lee Strassberg Institute and The Loft. Price appeared in such films as 9 to 5, Mommie Dearest and Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Having always been intrigued by the "behind the scenes" of motion pictures, he then decided to try the other side of the camera. He began as an assistant to producer Ray Stark ("Funny Girl", "The Way We Were" and "Secret of my Success"). While working for Stark, Price worked on such productions as Annie, Blue Thunder and The Toy.
It was while working on The Toy that Price met director Richard Donner (Superman, Lethal Weapon). He went on to spend the next two years as Donner's assistant. This included filming six months in Italy on the film, Ladyhawke.
After returning from Italy, Price attended The University of Southern California (USC). Price majored in Film and Italian. While at USC Price was a Vice President of the USC Student Senate and in charge of campus events as Executive Director of the USC Program Board. He was also President of the USC Italian Club.
Following U.S.C., Price made his directorial debut with the motion picture, Son of Darkness:To Die For 2 ('91). Daily Variety noted, "One of those genuine rarities: a sequel that's much better written, directed and acted than its predecessor". VideoHound's Video Guide® declared: "The acting, stunt work and special effects are first rate". Having cost just $500,000 to make, it was one of Trimark's top ten releases for 1991.
For television, Price directed multiple episodes of the successful syndicated series, "Nightman" for Glen Larson and Tribune.
Price has two sons Will and Dylan and has been with partner Charlotte Robinson since 2005.
David holds both Irish and American passports. Price is a member of The Directors Guild of America.

Born in Shreveport, Louisiana on August 19, 1952, David was the third child of Jack Gray Beaird Sr. and Mary Jane Hunter. He was a graduate of Chicago's Goodman School of Drama. In Chicago, he began his professional career as an actor, playwright, director, and acting coach that spanned four decades.
At 19, David won acclaim for his role in "Look Homeward, Angel" as the character Eugene Gant. The Chicago Tribune called him, "a young man who will one day be a consummate and famous actor." After a number of successful acting roles, he founded the Wisdom Bridge Theatre in 1974 on a shoestring budget. The theatre's name was inspired by a painting whose subtitle read: "The bridge to wisdom is in the continual asking of questions." This was David's method. Using his plays to ask big questions, David built Wisdom Bridge into a critically-acclaimed avant-garde theatre, with innovative stagings of "Cyrano de Bergerac" and "Twelfth Night". There he also developed one of his original plays, "Dignity," a life story of Socrates. He even adapted the comic strip, "The Wizard of ID" and staged it with a life-sized dragon puppet. By 1975, when David was 22, the Shreveport Times called him, "the nation's youngest theatrical genius" who was "setting the Chicago theatrical world on its ear." He left the Wisdom Bridge in 1977 due to health problems.
In the 1980's he headed to Hollywood where he wrote (or rewrote) and directed a series of films, including "Octavia" (1984), "The Party Animal" (1984), "My Chauffeur" (1986), "It Takes Two" (1988) and "Pass the Ammo" (1988), a satire of televangelism that was presciently made before the Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker scandal made news. Directing films was new territory and David recalled having to be told to say "action" and "cut" during his early turns as director. While "Party Animal" was a wild and bawdy romp, with "My Chauffeur" he was channeling screwball comedies of the 1930's. "It Takes Two" was also a romantic comedy. His films had commercial success and led to other offers, not all of which he wanted to pursue.
He did want to pursue theatre and in California, David founded the Whitefire Theatre in Sherman Oaks, which was close enough to his house at the time that he could walk to work. He ran acting classes at the theatre that became very popular. There was often the chance for students to work in the theatre in exchange for tuition. These classes gave actors a chance to work through material they would later audition elsewhere, which helped many land roles and certainly saved a lot of embarrassment.
It was at the Whitefire that David began staging "Scorchers", a play he had written about a cajun wedding night in the bayou. The play ran for at least two years and won several awards. The theatrical success of "Scorchers" led to a film version that was released in 1991. Although the budget for the film was fairly low, the strength of the material, and no doubt the charisma of the director, helped attract numerous stars to appear. Faye Dunaway, Emily Lloyd, James Earl Jones, Denholm Elliot, and Jennifer Tilly all contributed their talents. The opening monologue of the film is particularly captivating. In it, the character Jumper, played by David's lifelong friend and collaborator, Leland Crooke, describes his baptism in the mystical Lost River: "I hit that water. I swam in pure sunlight, and turned old but got caught young forever."
In 1992, he created the television series "Key West", in which an Ohio factory worker played by Fisher Stevens wins the lottery and goes off to live the writer's life in Florida, with Hemingway as his inspiration. David wrote, directed and produced much of the series, but ultimately felt hemmed in by the way the television network tried to control his work. Stevens begins one episode by saying: "Writing is a solitary exercise... It cannot be done by committee. You have to dig deep down into your gut with no distractions and with discipline." This summed up at least part of David's objection to the television writing process and perhaps helps explain why the show was his only major television writing credit.
Returning to the theater, David brought his heartstopping tale of greed and family dysfunction, "900 Oneonta," to the London stage in 1994. The play opened at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre but then, due to popular demand and rave reviews, moved to the Old Vic. With Jon Cryer, Ben Daniels, Sophie Okonedo, and Leland Crooke in the cast, the darkly-comic show was a hit and garnered an Olivier award nomination for best play. "Disturbingly hilarious& nails you breathless to your seat" went one write-up from the Evening Standard. "900 Oneonta" also played in New York City at the Circle Repertory in 1996. Attesting to its appeal, the play had a long and successful run at LA's Odyssey Theatre, with the main London cast members returning in the cast.
In 2001, David married Shevonne Marie Durkin. They had been together since 1993, when they met and fell in love while working on a project called "Wasted Grace." At one audition, asked to read her lines differently, Shevonne jumped up on David's desk and belted them out. She got the part, of course. With her playfulness, loyalty and intelligence, Shevonne helped to ground and complete David. They shared many happy years together.
David worked for many years on a project that dealt with the power of Buddhism. In "The Civilization of Maxwell Bright," a misogynist played by Patrick Warburton (a Whitefire acting veteran) is humanized by an Asian mail-order bride who also happens to be a Buddhist nun. The film's subject, according to David, was "how one person pulls the other out of hell." It screened at festivals in 2005.
After that, his high-profile public output dropped off. His health suffered. But he never ceased to be an outlandish storyteller, a captivating presence, a lifelong seeker, and a generous soul. There are many stories that encapsulate David's generosity. It was a key part of his character. He would help a family with their mortgage, surprise panhandlers with large donations, pick up big dinner checks, give away a car, or, repeatedly, share his home with family and friends. He left his door unlocked and was open to visitors. He always looked for ways to help others, sometimes simply by giving them his profound attention, sometimes by whisking them out of truly harmful circumstances and giving them a new start.
He also had a profound connection with animals, starting with his childhood dog Skipper. His dog Zeus, with whom he loved to sing, is still waiting for him to come home and sing again.
David helped many people, both personally and professionally, by believing in their abilities. His belief was catching, and people used it to begin believing in themselves. He went out of his way to encourage and celebrate the creativity of others and sought, in his own relaxed and tolerant way, to support his friends and family. He had faith in his personal artistic vision and tried to protect it from whatever self-styled experts or critics said. Just as Jumper had in "Scorchers", David had found Lost River and hoped everyone else could find it too: "The secret, most precious, most beautiful things in your heart -- and in life -- just ain't on any map. But you been there, you know they real, they true whether you can prove it or not & Anything you yourself done swum in, believe."Films Directed:
