Everyone knows that hotels — preferably isolated, ideally with very few guests — make the best settings for horror films. All that sad anonymity, all that provisional space ready to be filled with something really nasty. In Cuckoo, Alpenplatz, run by the excessively friendly Mr. Konig (Dan Stevens) totally fits the bill.
You never get a clear idea of its geography, apart from an enormous foyer fronted by a sort of supermarket where the odd, disoriented guest wanders in to vomit into the freezer unit. “Oh yes, that happens sometimes,” says the flirty receptionist Trixie (Greta Fernandez), who apparently has just stepped out of one of Brigitte Bardot’s lesser movies. There also are some bungalows — how close to the main building is not clear either — including one painted pink that Konig calls “the love nest.” In horror, that has to be a bad sign.
So a hotel is a good start.

Elvis Presley‘s “Viva Las Vegas” was one one of several songs by the same musical genius that the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll recorded. Bob Dylan had a lot to say about the songwriter in question in his most recent book. Dylan said the songwriter left the world of professional gambling after two of his fellow musicians gave him a wake-up call.
Elvis Presley’s ‘Viva Las Vegas’ was written by an artist who grew sick of songwriting
“Viva Las Vegas” was co-written by Mort Shuman and Doc Pomus. Pomus was known for writing Elvis’ “Kiss Me Quick,” “Little Sister,” “Surrender,” “Suspicion,” “(Marie’s the Name) His Latest Flame,” and “She’s Not You.” Dylan dedicated his 2022 book The Philosophy of Modern Song to Pomus.
In the book, the “Lay Lady Lay” singer compared the hustle of the entertainment industry to the world of faith healers. “Doc Pomus, though also wheelchair-bound,...

With haute couture week in Paris concluded, the spotlight of the fashion world shifted en masse to Saint-Paul-de-Vence, the village perched on the Maritime Alps in southern France. Simon Porte Jacquemus chose it as the location to present his new collection for 2024 in the Maeght Foundation, a few kilometers from Nice, calling together his high-profile friends Gigi Hadid, Emily Ratajkowski, model (and girlfriend, reportedly, of Leonardo DiCaprio) Vittoria Ceretti and Deva Cassel (daughter of Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel) who paraded on a platform set up among the works of Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Alexander Calder and Alberto Giacometti.
Not surprisingly, the collection of 47 looks, both women’s and men’s, was given the name “Les Sculptures” by the French designer (who himself grew up in the south of France, in the town of Mallemort, not far from Marseille). Elvis Presley‘s “Viva Las Vegas” is one of the most infectious rock songs of the 1960s. According to Bob Dylan, it’s also an advertisement. Dylan had a lot to say about the co-writer of the song. “Viva Las Vegas” went on to have a significant impact on the titular city.
Bob Dylan wrote that Elvis Presley’s ‘Viva Las Vegas’ is a ‘bright and breezy love song’
In his 2022 book The Philosophy of Modern Music, Dylan had plenty of positive things to say about “Viva Las Vegas.” “‘Viva Las Vegas’ is also a commercial,” he opined. Notably, “Viva Las Vegas” was co-written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, the same duo behind other Elvis hits such as “Surrender,” “Little Sister,” and “(Marie’s the Name) His Latest Flame.”
“Of course, when Elvis first recorded this Doc Pomus–Mort Shuman composition in 1963 and released it in 1964, he didn’t know that five years later,...

A convincing romantic and erotic attraction, we can all agree, is one of the keys to a good rom-com. Do you believe these two people love each other? Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell definitely have that in “Anyone but You.” It begins with the simple fact that both are such splendid camera objects. She, with her goldfish eyes and pout of self-possession, looks like a more wised-up, no-nonsense Brigitte Bardot, while he, with his squinty eyes and killer grin, resembles Tom Cruise with a weird touch of the young Dustin Hoffman’s geek glamour. These two have “mega movie stars of tomorrow” written all over them, though not merely because they look so good. Both are lightning-fast actors, delivering the spiked screwball banter and — important for this movie — the toxic insults with airy aplomb.
For, of course, the history of romantic comedy is also powered by another dynamic, one nearly as important as love.

British actor who starred in the 1960s film classics Saturday Night and Sunday Morning and The Entertainer
Shirley Anne Field, who has died aged 87, was likened to Marilyn Monroe, Catherine Deneuve and even “a sort of red-haired Brigitte Bardot”. There was no question she could stop traffic. “Lorries used to thunder to a halt, and I would wonder what they were looking at,” she said.
Her presence was sharply distinctive. In Karel Reisz’s film of Alan Sillitoe’s Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960), a defining work of kitchen-sink drama, she was a vision of self-possession as Doreen, who works in a Nottingham hairnet factory, lives with her mother and catches the eye of the discontented lathe operator Arthur Seaton, played by Albert Finney.

The Oscars are still five months away, but there’s one winner prediction that you can take to the bank. The category of Best Costume Design will be won by a period drama or a fantasy film. In the past 45 years, only one contemporary-set movie has scored the costume prize, with only about one contemporary nominee per decade.
While dressing up monarchs and showgirls and superheroes is a craft that deserves praise, the period/fantasy monopoly also highlights work outside of that mold. And there’s no better recent example of imagination in modern dress than “Passages,” the great drama from director Ira Sachs (“Love Is Strange”), elevated with idiosyncratic, seductive costumes design by Khadija Zeggaï.
Set among the bourgeoisie in modern day Paris, “Passages” focuses on German filmmaker Tomas (Franz Rogowski), who is married to artist Martin (Ben Whishaw) but falls in love with schoolteacher Agathe (Adele Excharpoulous).

Hollywood strikes have deprived festival of glamour but not debate, while focus switched to varyingly controversial directors
From Elizabeth Taylor lounging barefoot on the beach and Marlon Brando catching a water taxi, to Brigitte Bardot frolicking on a green lawn, the Venice film festival has always been synonymous with celebrity and glamour.
But with dual strikes by the writers’ and actors’ guilds forcing a Hollywood shutdown, and actors prohibited from promoting studio films during labour action, this year’s edition of the world’s oldest film festival was always going to be different. Venice without the stars, the Italians can contend, is like a spritz without the fizz.

Brigitte Bardot, 88, is recovering after first responders rushed to her house last month when she suffered from breathing problems.
Her husband, Bernard d’Ormale, called the ambulance while the couple was in their home in Saint-Tropez. He shared the incident with the public explaining that the heat wave in France caused the incident. He characterized it as “a moment of respiratory distraction,” to the local news outlet Var-matin.
He additionally stated that the “ambulances got the wrong address” causing a delay in her care.
First responders gave Bardot oxygen to help normalize her breathing and watched her before they left.
Bardot is well-known for acting in the films The Bear and the Doll, Plucking the Daisy, The Night Heaven Fell, The Truth and Contempt. She acted until her 40th birthday in 1973 when she announced her retirement.
Since then, Bardot has become an animal activist, although some of her actions have been deemed controversial.

George Harrison met John Lennon through Paul McCartney. McCartney suggested Harrison join their band, the Quarrymen, and Lennon reluctantly agreed. He believed Harrison was too young and would ruin their band’s image. Eventually, though, he grew to respect his younger bandmate. Harrison said this happened after he kissed a girl who looked like Brigitte Bardot.
George Harrison shared the moment he felt he gained John Lennon’s respect
Harrison looked up to Lennon, but Lennon didn’t give him the same respect. That is, until Harrison kissed a girl who looked like Bardot. Lennon had long harbored a crush on the French actor, to the point that he asked his girlfriends to try to look more like her.
“Of course, as a teenager, my sexual fantasies were full of Anita Ekberg and the usual giant Nordic goddesses,” Lennon said in The Beatles Anthology. “That is, until Brigitte Bardot became...

John Lennon was the first Beatle to get married, but that didn’t stop him from pursuing other women, including, to a certain extent, Pattie Boyd. Boyd married Lennon’s bandmate, George Harrison, in 1966, but they began dating in 1964. As a result, Lennon knew her for years. In this time, he reportedly harbored a crush on Boyd. According to Lennon’s longtime friend, Pete Shotton, Lennon didn’t always do a good job of hiding this.
John Lennon had a crush on Pattie Boyd
Long before he met Boyd, Lennon developed a crush on Brigitte Bardot. She became his ideal type, and he encouraged his wife, Cynthia, to change her appearance to look more like Bardot.

For years, John Lennon’s biggest celebrity crush was Brigitte Bardot. He developed crushes on women who looked like her and encouraged his girlfriends to dye their hair blonde. Because of his fame, he finally got a chance to meet his longtime crush. Unfortunately for him, it didn’t go over well. He took acid to soothe his nerves, but it kept him from being able to make conversation.
John Lennon didn’t make a great impression when he met his celebrity crush
After over a decade of having Bardot as his biggest celebrity crush, Lennon finally got the chance to meet her in 1968. Beatles press officer Derek Taylor organized a dinner for them.

Emergency services were called to Brigitte Bardot’s Saint Tropez home on Wednesday after the iconic French actress and animal rights activist suffered breathing difficulties, according to French media reports.
News of her malaise sent French media outlets into overdrive amid fears for the well-being of the 88-year-old actress.
Her husband Bernard d’Ormale was later reported to have told local newspaper Var Martin that his wife’s breathing was back under control and she was feeling better.
“It was around 9 o’clock when Brigitte had trouble breathing. It was stronger that usual but she didn’t lose consciousness… the fireman came and gave her oxygen and then stayed to monitor her,” he said.
He suggested high temperatures in Saint Tropez as Southern Europe suffers a prolonged heatwave had been a contributing factor.

Jane Birkin graced the front pages of most French newspapers on Monday as France mourned the death of the late British actress and singer who enjoyed icon status in the country that she had called home since the late 1960s.
“Our tears can’t change anything,” proclaimed Le Parisien newspaper, which first broke the news of Birkin’s death at the age of 76 on Sunday.
Libération ran with the simple headline “Without Jane”, while regional newspaper Le Maine Libre referred to the late actress as “The Eternal English Bride of France”.
International obituaries have highlighted Birkin’s notorious performance with partner and late bad boy of French pop music Serge Gainsbourg on the 1968 pop song, ‘Je t’aime… moi non plus’, or the fact she inspired the Hermès Birkin bag.
For the French, she was much more.

With Jane Birkin’s passing, France loses both an icon and one of its greatest enigmas. To focus on France is not to diminish the fact that Birkin’s death will be mourned around the world. Alongside Brigitte Bardot, Françoise Hardy and Catherine Deneuve, Birkin was one of the last surviving 1960s femmes who sparked global interest in French culture.
Except that Birkin wasn’t French. She was born in London and clung to her English accent all her life. Birkin was perfectly fluent, but cultivated a faux-naïf way of speaking her adopted language that reinforced her persona as the eternal child. For the French, it was all part of her singular charm, established decades earlier… and which she sometimes struggled to escape.
As partner and muse to Svengali-like songwriting genius Serge Gainsbourg, Birkin posed for the cover of his “Histoire de Melody Nelson” album, wearing only a red wig and open-waisted blue jeans,...

Jane Birkin, the English-French star who collaborated with Serge Gainsbourg on the risqué hit “Je T’aime… Moi Non Plus,” died July 16, French media reported. She was 76.
She and Gainsbourg were married from 1968-80 and worked together on “Je T’aime… Moi Non Plus,” released in 1969 – and recorded the year before, six months after they met on the set of the film Slogan. The song topped the UK chart and was Top 5 in several other European countries and Mexico but was not a hit Stateside.
The song, originally written by Gainsbourg for Brigitte Bardot, caused a scandal on its release for its sexual content. It was banned by radio stations across the UK, Italy and Spain, but became an enormous and instantly recognisable hit across the world.

Humane Society International and our partner organizations together constitute one of the world’s largest animal protection organizations-backed by 11 million people. Hsi works to protect all animals-including animals in laboratories, farm animals, companion animals, and wildlife-and our record of achievement demonstrates our dedication and effectiveness. With the support of our advocates and donors, we have advocated for strong legislation to protect animals. For example, in 2009 we helped achieve a European Union ban on trade in seal products, a major step toward ending the annual commercial seal slaughter in Canada. We work with local animal organizations in countries all over the world to provide direct, hands-on care to animals in need and spread the culture of compassion. Our campaigns strike at the root of problems affecting animals by providing the tools and resources to prevent animal suffering both now and in the future.

“Bardot” star Julia de Nunez didn’t intend to make such a splash this early. As a drama student, she was happy to hone her craft, and planned to someday try for France’s National Conservatory, if they would have her. But when she saw a casting notice for an upcoming series – and one that resonated with her in a personal way – she had to answer the call.
“Of course, I knew Brigitte Bardot as an actress and singer,” de Nunez tells Variety. “And funnily enough I was often told that I resembled her. In fact, I myself noticed the resemblance as a young girl. So it was all the more amusing to read for the role. It made sense somewhere in my life.”
Sufficient to say the Franco-Argentine actress got the role, and would embody the midcentury icon in Daniele and Christopher Thompson’s limited series “Bardot,” which follows the iconic B.

Director Jacques Rozier, who was regarded as the last surviving member of the French New Wave, has died. He was 96.
French media reported that a close acquaintance of the filmmaker had confirmed his death on June 2 in his native city of Paris, after a short spell in hospital.
Rozier never achieved the renown of Jean-Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut, Agnès Varda, Jacques Demy, Claude Chabrol or Eric Rohmer, but his work had its place in the French New Wave and pushed boundaries in ways that laid a path for filmmakers today.
After studying at the early French cinema school Idhec, Rozier cut his directing teeth as a TV assistant, while making his own shorts including Rentrée des Classes (1956) and Blue Jeans (1958).

Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” one of the best reviewed films of the Cannes competition, which was bought by Neon, examines the collapse of a marriage and a mother-and-son relationship in a documentary-style courtroom drama. The chamber piece is driven by Sandra Hüller’s (“Toni Erdmann”) nuanced performance as a successful German novelist on trial for the murder of her husband (Samuel Theis), who died in mysterious circumstances in a remote corner of the snowy French Alps. Their visually impaired 11-year-old son (Milo Machado Graner) is called on the witness stand, prompting a dissection of Sandra’s conduct as a wife and a mother. Supporting roles are played by Swann Arlaud and Antoine Reinartz.
“Anatomy of a Fall” marks a departure in terms of genre and tone for Triet, though she co-wrote it with Arthur Harari, with whom she co-wrote her previous three movies, “La bataille de Solferino,...

One of the grand paradoxes of Jean-Luc Godard is that he was a radical, an outlier, a filmmaker who guarded his purity and always looked askance at “the system,” yet because the nature of filmmaking is that it requires a lot of money, and is connected to fame, and produces images that can spread with iconic power, Godard was an outsider who was also an insider; a poet of cinema who made himself a celebrity; an artist who bridged the larger-than-life, old-school ethos of movies with the forbidding imperatives of the avant-garde.
All of that contradiction is on full display, with a luscious kind of resonance, in “Godard par Godard,” an hour-long documentary, written by Frédéric Bonnaud and directed by Florence Platarets, that was presented at the Cannes Film Festival today as a tribute to Godard, eight months after his death on September 13, 2022. The documentary was shown along with Godard’s final film,...

No book could ever fully capture the beautiful, ugly, inexplicable madness that is the Cannes Film Festival — but that hasn’t stopped a handful from trying. Here are THR’s executive editor (awards) and resident film-book bibliophile’s picks for the five best.
1. Two Weeks in the Midday Sun: A Cannes Notebook, by Roger Ebert (1987)
This thin travelogue by the Chicago Sun-Times’ longtime film critic, who won a Pulitzer Prize in 1975 and died in 2013, chronicles his experience covering the fest’s 1987 edition, having previously attended many times before. It breezily profiles true festival characters like the publicist Renee Furst, the schlock showman Menahem Golan and the gambler Billy “Silver Dollar” Baxter — all now gone — and charmingly illustrates how much some things have changed (journalists no longer file reports by telex when they can get around to it, but rather post multiple online dispatches daily) and others have not (the jetlag and lack of sleep,...

Exclusive: Fremantle has acquired global distribution rights to the upcoming Brigitte Bardot documentary.
TF1’s Bardot from Alain Berliner (Ma Vie en Rose), which will air later this year on the French network, is a 90-minute feature from Featuristic Films and Timpelpictures that aims to unearth the true life story of a “muse to the greatest artists who was often misunderstood.”
Fremantle will sell around the world and Deadline can reveal that the likes of Paul Watson, Claude Lelouch, Allain Bougrain-Dubourg and Jean-Max Rivière are taking part in the doc.
Bardot was one of the first French movie stars to attain worldwide fame. The And God Created Woman star lived a life under the spotlight, thrown from success to scandal until she almost completely disappeared. Seen in the present day as an enigma, Bardot, who will shortly turn 90, shares her current outlook on life, being ahead of her time on women’s rights,...

Each July, the idyllic Cycladic islet of Mykonos goes to war. The victors claim sprawling, ultra-luxurious party palaces, built for sipping retsina with the world’s rich and famous. The less-privileged check in to double-bed hotel rooms.
A 33-square-mile speck in the Aegean Sea, Mykonos has one of the densest inventories of luxury private villas anywhere in Greece. In the summer, its population swells from about 15,000 to over 200,000 well-heeled sun-seekers each week. In the last two years, Demi Moore, Elon Musk, Bella Thorne, Nicole Scherzinger, Tommy Hilfiger and A-list stylist Warren Alfie Baker have all visited, but it’s the multitude of semi-anonymous European billionaires, Middle Eastern royals and American status-seekers who really keep the island’s villa economy afloat.
Big names and big money are, of course, nothing new to the island. Long before Lindsay Lohan opened her ill-fated Beach House and billionaires packed out exclusive nightspots like Scorpios,...
