In two open letters to shareholders of the Walt Disney Company, grandchildren of Walt Disney and his brother Roy O. Disney came out in support of CEO Bob Iger and current management, which is being assailed by two investment firms trying to change the makeup of the company’s board.
“From Mickey and Minnie, to Snow White and Mary Poppins, Disney is not a company that makes widgets – it makes magic,” wrote Roy P. Disney Susan Disney Lord, Tim Disney and Abigail Disney, who has been outspokenly critical of the company in the past. “And it takes a special group of leaders with a deep respect and understanding for this tradition to develop the kinds of incredible experiences – whether in a theme park, at a movie theatre, or in your own home – that touch people’s hearts. Bob Iger, his management team, and the Board of Directors are faithful to this magic.

The Oscars’ animated feature category turns voting age this year, which means none of the genre’s masterpieces dating back to the 1930s ever competed for the coveted prize. And that means one of this year’s competitors for the prize, “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” represents something of a fresh chance for a story that worked so well for Walt Disney back in 1940 that it still garnered two Oscars — for song and score — and the kind of praise filmmakers of all genres and stripes can only dream of.
Variety’s review of Walt Disney’s masterpiece was typical of the ecstatic mood that greeted the film’s release back in early 1940: “Technically an improvement on ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,’ and in many ways quite as captivating in imaginative fantasy, Walt Disney’s ‘Pinocchio’ (Pin-oak-io) is the finest piece of feature length animation yet created.

Walt Disney Studios is easily one of the most iconic companies in the world, responsible for many of the most-beloved movies of all time. From animated classics to live-action reboots and original streaming shows, Disney always remains on the cutting edge of filmmaking innovation. While the company has consistently produced films that fans want to see, over the years, a few projects have ended up on the cutting room floor. One of these is Mort, an animated production with an impressive pedigree. While Mort died early on in the production process, fans still wonder what might have happened if the eerie flick would have made it to the big screen.

Welcome to 100 Years of Disney Magic, a series examining the history, achievements, and legacy of Disney Studios over the last century.
The Walt Disney company is now a centenarian. First founded as the Disney Bros. Studios in October 1923 — a partnership between Walt and his older brother Roy — the animation company would go on to change the media landscape in ways that would have shocked even the forward-looking, ever-ambitious Uncle Walt himself.
The studio is a cultural behemoth, thanks to its years of box office dominance, cross-media strategy, and massive library of highly valued IPs. Disney was the first studio to have two billion-dollar movies in one calendar year in 2010, and then was to have a total gross of 3 billion at the domestic box office in 2016. After buying up Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm, the company officially acquired the juggernaut 21st Century Fox, a studio with roots going all the way back...

This is not Uncle Walt’s Pinocchio. The little wooden boy has been a symbol of the Walt Disney Company ever since the original animated classic came out in 1940, and not even an ill-advised live-action remake released by the Mouse House just a few months ago could really sully the original’s reputation. But anyone who watches this new, completely separate stop-motion version of the tale, co-directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson, is in for a dark surprise—and hopefully, some delight.
Del Toro’s Pinocchio is about as different from Disney’s as one could imagine, and not just because this is stop-motion and the latter is traditional animation. For one thing, this is clearly del Toro’s vision, and while it may give perhaps only the littlest viewers a few unpleasant dreams, it is nevertheless infused with the maestro’s Gothic storytelling sensibility (even more so...

A well-liked executive with a lengthy history at the Walt Disney Company is called upon to serve as its CEO after a public fracas resulted in troubled shareholders and concerns about the company's future legacy. When the executive is installed as the CEO, those public concerns quickly dissipate and are replaced by pleased reactions from Wall Street and Disney fans. The executive is, as you may have guessed, Robert Iger. The year? Why, 2005, of course. No, you have not traveled back in time — but history is genuinely, inexplicably repeating itself again. On the Sunday night before Thanksgiving 2022, industry watchers were legitimately stunned by the one-two punch: Disney's current CEO, Bob Chapek, was being ousted, and his replacement was Bob Iger, the man who literally chose Chapek to replace him as CEO. Iger has the advantage of weathering 15 years as the CEO of the House of Mouse, which may help or...

Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns,” a sequel decades in the making, opens Dec. 19. Even before the 1964 original, Hollywood made several attempts to adapt P.L. Travers’ books, with Samuel Goldwyn and Katharine Hepburn among those involved in the chase. But aside from a one-hour 1949 CBS television version, they all hit a dead-end. The first “Mary Poppins” novel appeared in 1934, and 30 years later, the film was a huge hit, earning more than $100 million and winning five Oscars. But as Variety reported after Travers died on April 23, 1996, “She resisted all Hollywood attempts to make a film sequel.” In an Aug. 4, 1965, story, Variety reported that Travers took part in a “transatlantic telephone” conversation, speaking from London to a group at a Madison, Wis., children’s-book conference. Asked about the movie, she said tersely, “I would have preferred that ‘Mary Poppins’ should be filmed by the British because, well, never mind, let’s not go into that.

Mary Poppins is finally making her triumphant return from the sky on December 19, 2018 in the aptly named “Mary Poppins Returns,” a full 54 years after the 1964 version. The original “Mary Poppins” scored a practically perfect 13 nominations at the Oscars with five wins, including Best Actress for Julie Andrews. If the glowing reactions from those who have attended early screenings of “Mary Poppins Returns” are any indication, the sequel could come pretty close to, or even match, that nomination total at the upcoming 91st Oscars.

Kevin Hart won’t be showing up for the Oscars, but advertisers will.
Walt Disney’s ABC has sold more than three-quarters of its commercial inventory for its February 24 broadcast of the glitzy awards fest, according to Jerry Daniello, senior vice president, entertainment brand solutions, for Disney ad sales, pacing ahead of its progress at this time last year. The mandate for “Mary Poppins Returns” came straight from Oscar-winning production designer John Myhre: It had to look “London-y,” but also “dipped in reality.” That’s because, unlike Walt Disney’s idyllic world of 1910 in the original movie, the London here took place in 1934, the era of the Depression, or “The Slump,” as the British called it.
“When I first heard the opening song, ‘Underneath the Lovely London Sky,’ I saw this as a love letter to London,” said Myhre, but with a gritty twist in accordance with director Rob Marshall’s vision of becoming much more colorful with the return of the beloved nanny (Emily Blunt).
We glimpse London coming awake out of the fog, gliding by Parliament, Big Ben, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridge, through some parks, before making our way to the familiar Cherry Tree Lane. “And we embraced London in the winter with the gray sky,...

In this month’s “Mary Poppins Returns,” Dick Van Dyke plays a surprisingly nimble elderly London banker — who bears an uncanny resemblance to the elderly Mr. Dawes he played in the original 1964 film “Mary Poppins.”
The 92-year-old actor, who’s best know for playing the “step-in-time” chimney sweep Bert in the Walt Disney classic, has said that he went to great lengths — and his own personal expense — to land the bonus role in the film.
“I loved portraying old men, and since first reading the script, I had been secretly eyeing that part, which included the song ‘Fidelity Fiduciary Bank,'” the actor wrote in his 2011 memoir, “My Lucky Life In and Out of Show Business.” “I saw a lot of potential for extracurricular amusement.”

“Coco,” Pixar’s love letter to Mexico and the Day of the Dead festival, couldn’t come at a better time for the animation studio and the country. It’s Pixar’s first original movie in two years and offers a vital cultural remedy to Trump’s nationalistic fervor (with an all-Latino cast that includes “Mozart in the Jungle’s” Gael Garcia Bernal, Benjamin Bratt, Renée Victor, and newcomer Anthony Gonzalez).
“In a time when the political climate seems very much divisive, it fills my heart with hope that a masterful filmmaker like Lee Unkrich is using his and Pixar’s considerable talents to showcase the people and culture of our beloved Mexico,” said Jorge Guitierrez, director of the first Day of the Dead animated feature, “The Book of Life,” produced by Guillermo del Toro in 2014. “I will be there on ‘Coco’s’ opening night with my whole family, living and remembered.

The mood got decidedly funnier and edgier in this year’s Emmy race for Original Music and Lyrics. It was a badly needed tonic for the country. Most notably, Tina Fey joined the musical fray for the first time, looking for her 10th Emmy with the hilarious “Hell No,” a tribute to Beyonce’s “Lemonade” (featuring an enraged Tituss Burgess) from “Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt.”
But, given the current zeitgeist, it’s not surprising that Chance the Rapper was nominated for his Run-d.M.C.–inspired rap tribute to Obama, “Last Christmas,” from “Saturday Night Live,” or that Rachel Bloom was back again with the raunchy “We Tapped That Ass” from “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” There was even room for the excruciatingly uncomfortable “The Ballad of Claus Jorstad (Devil Stool)” from “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” and and the animated burlesque of “Jing-a-Ling-a-Ling” from “Duck the Halls: A Mickey Mouse Christmas Special.”

Recently it has been reported that Netflix has some serious debts to pay off in the future, but that it's all part of their plan to stay ahead as the top streaming service in the market. We also know that there are other streaming services like Amazon Prime and Hulu that have been making a push for original content to attract subscribers. Yesterday we got news that Disney is pulling out of Netflix and planning to also get at least two direct to consumer streaming subscription services: one for Espn and the other for Disney films and television shows.

Unlike Mickey Mouse Club’s “see you real soon” send off, Disney is saying so long Netflix! Disney has announced that the company will pull its films from Netflix and launch their own streaming service in 2019.
Not all the details about the streaming service are out as of yet but Disney CEO Bob Iger has reportedly said that Pixar or Disney-branded films will probably appear on the exclusive service. When it comes to Marvel and Star Wars, my guess is that those will also appear on the service but details on those franchises are still unclear at the moment.
Along with the streaming service coming soon, the Mickey Mouse company will also launch an Espn streaming service as early as next year. Espn also has their popular “30 for 30” documentary series on Netflix. The Espn streaming service is anticipated to stream 10,000 sporting events over its TV networks.

If there is one couple we wish we saw more of, it's definitely Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes. The couple has been together for almost six years now and have a habit of keeping their relationship extremely private, but on Sunday, they stepped out for a romantic date at the happiest place on Earth: Disneyland. Clad in baseball caps and jeans, Ryan and Eva embraced their inner children as they enjoyed the California park's fun rides, including The Haunted Mansion, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and It's a Small World. They also did a little souvenir shopping, and Eva treated herself to an oversize lollipop. To make matters even cuter, the couple held hands as they strolled through the park, and Ryan also assisted his other half onto one of the rides like a true gentleman. Is there anything more secretive than the details of a Star Wars or Marvel Cinematic Universe film? Probably, but that secret must be such a secret that we don't even know it exists. Directors and actors involved in these projects live in terror that Mickey Mouse will hunt them down and lock them in Disney's deepest, darkest dungeon should they accidentally reveal any details on a panel or in a routine interview. Con footage is kept from fans for months, and though the trailers often reveal too much, Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm always have some tricks left up their sleeve.
One of the projects in Hollywood today most shrouded in secrecy is Avengers: Infinity War, the culmination of every McU film that has come before. We've already heard about how Tom Holland was not given the entire script from the film, just scenes involving Spider-Man / Peter Parker. Now, we've learned...

Music’s biggest stars have nothing on little Jagger Snow Ross’ latest birthday bash!
The adorable daughter of Ashlee Simpson and Evan Ross marked her second birthday on Sunday, and true to her musician parents, the little girl had the coolest party activities -- like decorating vinyl CDs!

Jagger was center-stage at her Andy Warhol-themed bash, holding her hands in the air while guests sang her “Happy Birthday,” then joining in when everyone clapped for her at the end of the song -- much to the amusement of half-brother Bronx.

Imagine if some movie came out called like Rat Ninjas. About rats that were irradiated and gained powers. And halfway through the trailer Mickey Mouse just totally shows up and fights alongside them. Or maybe the whole trailer is Mickey Mouse with the ninjas. But the movie wasn't made by Disney. Now you have an idea of the weirdness going on right now in Japan.
A trailer has been released for a film coming out called Dragon Force: So Long Ultraman. In the trailer, classic Japanese hero/robot Ultraman, is Heavily featured. Like old footage is shown, as well as new CGI of him and some other robots. You'd expect this must be made by the people who has the rights to Ultraman. But... no.
Tsuburaya Productions, who holds the rights to the character recently talked with Av Watch discussing this new movie, which it had no part in making.

This could be the year that Julia Louis-Dreyfus makes Emmy history.
Nominated once again for playing Selina Meyer on HBO’s “Veep,” Louis-Dreyfus is the favorite to win her sixth consecutive Emmy as outstanding comedy actress. In doing so, she would beat the record for most Emmys won by a performer in the same role for the same series.
Right now, Louis-Dreyfus is in a three-way tie with Candice Bergen (“Murphy Brown”) and Don Knotts (“Andy Griffith Show”). All three thesps won five Emmys for their roles on those shows. Now, Louis-Dreyfus is poised to leap ahead.
What’s more, she’s also in line this year to tie Cloris Leachman for the most Emmys ever won by a female performer. Leachman has eight; Louis-Dreyfus has seven – tied with Mary Tyler Moore and Allison Janney. (Janney, of course, is competing with Louis-Dreyfus in the comedy...

Kurt Russell learned about the movie business from a very special person.
The actor got his start on a 10-year contract with the Walt Disney Company in the 1960s — and he has plenty of personal anecdotes about the man himself.
Russell appears in the latest issue of Disney Twenty-Three, which celebrates Disney legends. In it, the actor pens an essay recalling his days as a child actor on set and what he learned from the animation and movie pioneer.
“What I learned at Disney was how to make movies, and I learned that from Walt,” Russell says, adding that Disney spent personal time with him.

Chinese giant in apparent step-back from leisure and tourism drive.
Chinese media and property goliath Dalian Wanda Group has struck a $9.3bn deal to sell a portion of its leisure and tourism projects to real-estate developer Sunac China.
The deal includes three Chinese theme parks owned by Wanda, which were intended to compete with Disney’s similar ventures in China (including Shanghai Disneyland, which opened in summer 2016 and has since welcomed more than 10 million guests).
Last year, Wanda owner Wang Jianlin claimed that his “wolf pack” of theme parks would better Disney’s efforts.
In total, Wanda is selling 91% of 13 tourism projects to Sunac, which will take over the project’s loans and financing, while Wanda will continue to design, build and manage the resorts under its own brand name.

Okay fantasy film fans, here’s a quick memory quiz for you (if you’re well past twenty). You recall what you were doing on that first weekend of May fifteen years ago (can’t be that long ago)? There’s a very good chance that you were making movie history by smashing the existing three-day box office total for a new film. Its title? Why the biggest film of 2002, Sony Pictures’ Spider-man directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire. For fans of superhero cinema, that year has the same importance as 1978 (Superman The Movie directed by Richard Donner and starring Christopher Reeve) and 1989 (Batman directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton…more about him soon). Sure, Superman and Batman had been the subject of low-budget movie serials, a story shown in weekly installments, usually a staple of “kiddie” matinees until the mid 1950’s. The Dark Knight had...

Welcome to another installment of Movies to Show My Son. This is the blog series were I discuss movies I can’t wait to show my son in the future. I’ll be covering my own personal experience with the movie, movie and life lessons I hope he will learn, and lastly my concerns about showing said film. This week’s film is Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
My Memory:
What surprised me about my memories of Who Framed Roger Rabbit is how I do not have many of them. As someone who was born in 1984 I was the right age for It, but for whatever reason, it was not one of those showcase films I watched as a child. Part of me thinks it was because my parents did not allow me to watch it, and after rewatching it recently I could understand why.
There are some moments that do stick out.
