Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Godzilla director Gareth Edwards will now take the helm of Universal Pictures' latest Jurassic World movie, but David Leitch was briefly attached to direct before deciding to part ways with the project.
At the time, we were told that Leitch stepped away after coming to the realization that his "creative input would be minimal due to the project’s fast-tracked status," and the filmmaker has now elaborated on his reasons for bailing on the film.
“We have the privilege of choice and that’s daunting,” he explained during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “And it’s true though, and we’ve kind of earned it, in terms of the movies that we’ve made and the successes they’ve had, and hopefully continued success, but to be asked to be in those worlds, you want to take those conversations seriously,...

Jeff Goldblum is one of the most respected and talented people in Hollywood. He has been an important part of the industry for decades, being a part of many different kinds of projects and starring in many versatile roles. Through all of these, he has gained immense success, having quite an impressive net worth to back this.
Successful Hollywood actor, Jeff Goldblum
One would expect that with these riches, the actor would be glad that his children wouldn’t have to worry about money. However, it would seem that he would not have it like this. Goldblum recently revealed in an interview that he would not be financially helping his children once they were older.

John Carpenter is a filmmaker who boasts several stone-cold classics to his resume. Not only did he more or less invent the modern slasher movie with "Halloween," but he's also responsible for titles such as "Escape From New York," "The Thing," "They Live," "Prince of Darkness," "Big Trouble in Little China," and many more. Carpenter is pretty much retired from feature filmmaking at this point, and his as-of-now final film, "The Ward," isn't so great. However, there's one later-period Carpenter movie that I consider to be one of his best works: "In the Mouth of Madness." It received mixed reviews when it opened in 1994, and it wasn't much of a box office hit, but in my humble opinion, it's pretty damn great — and scary, too.

Is 2024 the year of tennis? At the movies and on our TV screens, the answer might be yes. This spring brings two major releases that both heavily feature racquets, green courts, and sweaty tennis action. The first was Peacock’s “Apples Never Fall,” a limited series based on “Big Little Lies” scribe Liane Moriarty’s novel about the family of two married tennis pros (played by Annette Bening and Sam Neill) who are forced to contend with the mysterious and sudden disappearance of their matriarch. Even more anticipated is “Challengers,” a Luca Guadagnino film that arrives — after strike-related delays — this April to tell the steamy story of a tennis coach (Zendaya) caught between her husband and an old flame as the two men go head to head in a Challenger tennis event.
These two releases mark the biggest Spring for tennis-related media in…possibly ever. Which isn’t necessarily hard...

Take a look at a full Season recap of the 1930’s-era Brit gangster series “Peaky Blinders” (named for the razor blades in their hat brims), with production now prepping for a September 2024 start on a wrap-up feature film, starring Oscar winner Cillian Murphy reprising his role as gang-leader ‘Tommy Shelby’ based on a real post-War gambling/booze outfit from England:
"...set in Birmingham, England, the series follows the exploits of the 'Shelby' crime family in the direct aftermath of the 'First World War'. led by 'Tommy Shelby' (Cillian Murphy). The gang comes to the attention of 'Major Chester Campbell' (Sam Neill), a 'Detective Chief Inspector' in the 'Royal Irish Constabulary' (Ric) sent over by 'Winston Churchill',
"Series One concludes on 'Black Star Day' where the 'Peaky Blinders' plan to take over betting at the 'Worcester Races'.

There’s something about a doppelganger that feels uniquely cinematic. A person who looks like you, thinks like you, and maybe even lives like you has always been a subject of fascination and dread in literature and philosophy, a concept that raises questions about individuality and the collective. But on the screen, seeing the effect of one person mimicked and duplicated proves all the more uncanny and unnerving. Science fiction, horror, and a multitude of other genres have used duality as a means to terrify, unsettle, and provoke.
And then, of course, there’s the acting challenge. For an experienced actor or an up-and-comer alike, playing dual roles is the ultimate flex, a way to show your range in a single project. Whether playing twins or identical strangers, an actor who takes on a dual role has to manage the trick of being both an individual and a duo, of...

Life is finding a way to fill the cast of the new Jurassic World sequel from the original Jurassic Park co-writer David Koepp. The new film has been courting actors like Scarlett Johansson, and recently, it is being rumored that Dev Patel and Colman Domingo are being sought out for roles. It’s a new era for dinosaurs. Jurassic World: Dominion concluded the sequel trilogy and in their alternate universe, humans and Earth’s prehistoric creatures are now living side-by-side in the modern world. But hey, at least we don’t have to worry about locusts anymore, right?
Sources have recently told Deadline that Jonathan Bailey, known for projects such as Bridgerton and Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, is currently in talks with Universal about possibly taking the lead role in the popular dinosaur franchise. Universal is looking to stay in business with Jonathan Bailey, one of the stars of its upcoming Wicked films. Bailey is in early talks for a leading role in the studio’s new take on Jurassic World, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Scarlett Johansson is already on the call sheet for the feature, which has Gareth Edwards directing and a script form Jurassic Park scribe David Koepp. Amblin Entertainment is partnering with Universal on the movie, which continues the world created by novelist Michael Crichton and originally adapted for the big screen by Steven Spielberg in 1993’s Jurassic Park. With Scarlett Johansson now in talks to star in the new Jurassic World movie, scooper Daniel Richtman has added a couple more casting rumours to the fire. According to Richtman, Colman Domingo (Euphoria) and Dev Patel (Monkey Man) are being eyed to star in the Jurassic World relaunch.
There’s no information on who Dev Patel might play in the Jurassic World movie, but Richtman added that Colman Domingo is being eyed to play the villain. Take all this with a grain of salt for now, but Patel and Domingo would make for excellent additions to the cast.

The Jurassic Park films, especially the first, are one of Steven Spielberg’s most acclaimed feats that pushed the boundaries with what one could do with visual effects. The director managed to bring dinosaurs to life in such a lively and entertaining way and the effects still stand up to this day. The franchise spawned a new trilogy in the 2010s with the Jurassic World trilogy.

John Carpenter's 1992 film "Memoirs of an Invisible Man" was a departure for the director. Throughout the 1980s, Carpenter directed many notable genre films that affected a direct and guileless style that roped in many fans and critics. His 1980s "hot streak" included "Escape from New York," "The Thing," "Christine," "Starman," and "Big Trouble in Little China." Although his 1987 film "Prince of Darkness" was nonsensical, it has many defenders, and his 1988 film "They Live" is now considered a seminal anti-establishment punk-rock text of the Reagan era.
That streak seems to have ended with "Memoirs," however. Although the film is slick, entertaining, and boasts some excellent special effects, many Carpenter fans felt a little off-put by the director's attempts to helm a comedic Chevy Chase vehicle. In "Memoirs," Chase plays a stock market guy who is accidentally exposed to an invisibility experiment. The film follows his travails as he adjusts to his lack of opacity,...

The infamous Satanic Panic is often referred to as the 20th century equivalent of the Salem Witch Trials, with innocent heavy metal fans and Dungeons & Dragons players being accused of worshipping Satan while apocalyptic conspiracy theories about the rise of the Antichrist and the supposed “Mark of the Beast” ran rampant amongst radical believers. However, what a lot of people don’t know is that horror cinema played an accidentally crucial role in inspiring this regrettable era of prejudice and misinformation.
In fact, there are a handful of specific horror films that informed most of the fears we now associate with the Satanic Panic, with some of the most influential being Richard Donner’s 1977 classic The Omen and its numerous follow-ups. Damien Thorn is the antichrist, and the trilogy that tells his unholy tale remains popular almost fifty years later. Indeed, while putting together this Omen movie ranked list and revisiting the original franchise, I was surprised at how well the old movies held up. Omen fans will be happy that the series has been restarted in a pretty interesting way this weekend, with The First Omen a surprisingly excellent prequel to the original trilogy (check out our interviews with the director and cast here), even if it takes one large liberty involving Damien’s birth that some fans may have an issue with. So, how do the Omen films rank against each other? Let’s take a look, but remember that the Fox TV movie, Omen IV: The Awakening, is not included, as I’m sticking with feature films.
The Omen (2006):

This article contains major spoilers for "The First Omen."Hello folks! Welcome back to Nunsploitation 2024: Battle of the Babies.
When last we left the saga of Damien Thorn, it was 1981, and Damien was played by the devilishly handsome Sam Neill in "The Final Conflict." In that film, the Antichrist nearly fulfilled his evil purpose in halting the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, but was foiled by his one-time lover, journalist Kate Reynolds (Lisa Harrow), who through the grace of God and her own strength was able to fatally stab Damien with the magical dagger of Megiddo, the weapon that poor Robert Thorn (Gregory Peck) failed to use against his adopted son Damien (Harvey Spencer Stephens) when he was a child in 1976.
If a 33-year-old Damien in 1981 seems implausible given that the first film sees Damien as merely five years of age and the 1978 sequel, "Damien: Omen II" follows the...

What to expect when you’re expecting … the Antichrist?
Filmmaker Arkasha Stevenson delivers her gleefully gruesome answer to that increasingly popular question in 20th Century’s terrifying and triumphant “The First Omen.” It’s a nominally named soft franchise reboot and the vastly superior (if accidental) answer to Neon’s “Immaculate” with Sydney Sweeney, also in theaters now.
Yes, both horror films explore what happens when a child of Christ is involuntarily forced to carry a demon baby to term. And yes, both movies have some merit; trite but true, Damien just doesn’t have that “Cassie from ‘Euphoria’” pull. But only Stevenson’s spin on “The Omen” can tie its borderline Nc-17 terror to a multi-decade genre legacy suddenly feasting on noticeably improved visual artistry and a narratively satisfying revamp of stale IP.

In what feels like a (brief) return of twin films — two movies with very similar plots released at the same time, like "Deep Impact" and "Armageddon" — we now have "The First Omen" and "Immaculate" bringing Catholic horror and nunsploitation back to the big screen.
"The First Omen" takes us back to a sweet time in the '70s when everyone was obsessed with religious horror, thanks in no small part to the monumental success of "The Exorcist" and "Rosemary's Baby." The film is a prequel to Richard Donner's 1976 film "The Omen," about the coming of the Antichrist that also plays very much like a Catholic take on "Final Destination" — with photos that show the order and the gruesome manner in which several characters in the film will die.

Image created by Shutterstock Generate. When Sam Neill made Jurassic Park, it was an entirely new experience for him. Prior to that, he’d never been in a movie that was driven by special effects to the extent that Jurassic Park was. Of course, in 1993, computer graphics for film were still in their infancy, so a lot of Jurassic Park’s effects were practical, including many of the dinosaurs seen in the movie. At the time the film was released, Neill talked to us about what it was like to act in the presence of dinosaur and to see the finished film for the first time. Two-time Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson is in talks to join the Gareth Edwards-directed Jurassic World reboot at Universal.
This has been out there in the ether for some time, but it’s looking quite solid. This puts Johansson in business with another major movie franchise following her Black Widow days at Marvel, which resulted in the star suing Disney over the 2021 pandemic release of that movie, which the studio opted to go day-and-date on Disney+, thus siphoning box office grosses. The two sides ultimately settled.
Universal is assembling the project quickly for a July 2, 2025, release. David Koepp, who adapted the first Jurassic Park from Michael Crichton’s classic novel, is penning the latest iteration of Jurassic World.

The Ides of March were marked this year by a three-way race among high profile filmmakers – Peter Farrelly, Doug Liman and Guy Ritchie – with original streaming film and TV series debuts across Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. But the sleeper success story of the week belonged to Netflix’s Lindsay Lohan rom com movie “Irish Wish.”
Ritchie made a splashy debut on March 7 with Netflix’s “The Gentlemen,” an eight-episode TV heist drama delivered in the director’s signature style. In its second week, “Gentlemen” had solid hold with a modest 30% decline to 1.3 billion minutes watched during the March 15-21 frame, according to original streaming content ratings calculated by Luminate.

The Series Mania Festival’s top prize for best series went to Rematch, a French-Hungarian drama about the historic match between chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov and Ibm’s Deep Blue computer.
The best actress prize went to Annette Bening for her role in Apples Never Fall, the first major TV role up from the five-time Oscar nominee. Kamel El Basha won best actor for the Australian drama House of Gods, in which he played the charismatic head cleric of a big city mosque.
In the Apples Never Fall adaptation, based on the novel by Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty, Bening plays Joy Delaney, family matriarch and patient wife to the irascible former tennis pro, Stan (Sam Neill). When Joy disappears, the four adult Delaney children are forced to reassess everything they thought they knew about their parents and their family history. It has been a while since “The Queen’s Gambit,” but as proven by “Rematch,” viewers’ love for chess is certainly not diminishing.
The show, dedicated to confrontation between famous chess player Garry Kasparov and Ibm’s supercomputer Deep Blue, was named the winner at Series Mania.
A somewhat lukewarm reception of “Apples Never Fall” didn’t stop Annette Bening from being crowned as best actress. The Peacock offering, also featuring Sam Neill and Alison Brie, is the latest adaptation of “Big Little Lies” and “Nine Perfect Strangers” scribe Liane Moriarty. Now showing a perfect family who, following its matriarch’s disappearance, needs to face some uncomfortable questions. Including this one: Did their beloved father have something to do with it?

Across Sam Neill’s illustrious career, the actor has worked with animatronic dinosaurs for “Jurassic Park” and led iconic horror films like “Possession” and “In the Mouth of Madness.” But for “Apples Never Fall,” Neill had a career first: working with a tennis pro to well, play a tennis pro.
Neill admitted that he “needed a lot of help” to convincingly portray tennis coach Stan Delaney.
“I needed a lot of help and I got a lot of help, which is just as well. I’m not the world’s most naturally athletic guy,” Neill told IndieWire. “It’s important for the story that this with an alpha male guy who dominates everyone on the court and requires his children to do the same that he looks like a killer on the court and elsewhere, actually. Exclusive: Apples Never Fall is off to a strong start on Peacock.
The series debuted on March 14 and, in its first weekend on the platform, it racked up 400M minutes watched, according to Nielsen data.
That’ll place it at No. 5 among streaming originals on the upcoming Nielsen streaming charts. The series is also the No. 3 streaming original drama series in the U.S.
The Nielsen charts won’t be publicly available for another month, so it’ll be quite a while before there’s more details on how it stacked up against competitors’ streaming originals.
Since only four days of viewing were captured in this measurement interval, it’s possible that the series will maintain this spot or even move higher in its first full week of availability. It’s worth noting that all seven episodes were released at once, which usually means a series will fall off the...

Cillian Murphy’s Oscar win won’t stop the six seasons and a movie push for “Peaky Blinders.”
The beloved BBC and Netflix series, which concluded in 2022 after Season 6, is set for a film adaptation. Creator Steven Knight told Birmingham World that Murphy will “definitely” be back for the “Peaky Blinders” movie. Murphy starred on the series as gangster Tommy Shelby; the period piece also starred Anya Taylor-Joy, Adrien Brody, and Sam Neill, among other actors.
“He definitely is returning for it,” Knight said of Murphy. “We’re shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth [in Birmingham].”
Murphy recently won the Best Actor Oscar for “Oppenheimer.” Murphy previously played a decade of supporting roles in other Christopher Nolan films. “Peaky Blinders” had been among Murphy’s few lead performances ahead of “Oppenheimer.”
The actor previously told Rolling Stone UK in 2023 that he would “love to do” a “Peaky Blinders” movie,...

Structurally, it was a brilliant conceit having six of the seven episodes of the “Apples Never Fall” limited series (currently streaming on Peacock) revolve around a different family member in this twisted jigsaw puzzle of a mystery. Score one for showrunner Melanie Marnich, who had a lot of bitter-tasting family dynamics to work with in adapting Liane Moriarty’s (“Big Little Lies”) page-turner novel. It’s about the tennis-obsessed Delaneys, who unravel when matriarch Joy (Annette Bening) suddenly disappears and hot-tempered patriarch Stan (Sam Neill) becomes the prime suspect in what eventually becomes a murder investigation.
As a result, their four adult children — Troy (Jake Lacy), Amy (Alison Brie), Logan (Conor Merrigan-Turner), and Brooke (Essie Randles) — are forced to confront their dysfunctional upbringing, competitive natures, and toxic relationships in realizing that they function more like a South Florida cult than a loving family.

Peacock’s Apples Never Fall, which is based on Liane Moriarty’s bestselling novel, tells the story of the seemingly picture-perfect Delaney family. However, when Joy (Annette Bening) goes missing and dark secret after dark secret is revealed, we quickly see just how twisted this competitive family truly is. While it is in our nature as an audience to attempt to put the puzzle pieces together until the very end, this series gives us the answer fairly quickly, hiding it in plain sight as it throws other suspects in the path to distract us.
Why do we choose to ignore what’s clearly wrong right in front of us? It’s not only a question that the members of the Delaney family, specifically the kids, should be asking themselves when Joy does return, but the audience as well. While we could not...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the Apples Never Fall finale.] Apples Never Fall spent seven episodes unraveling the mystery of Joy Delaney’s (Annette Bening) disappearance, and as it turns out, no one’s theories about whodunnit were right. In fact, the explanation was overwhelmingly simple. Each episode of the Peacock melodrama focused on a different member of the Delaney family. It featured flashbacks from “then” and “now” to show how the family’s rift happened, how it led to Joy going missing, and the aftermath. While her absence caused shockwaves and was splashed across the news, the truth was ultimately pretty anticlimactic. Joy wasn’t dead; she just left. Finding out why she left answered every lingering question the series posed. By the time we got to Sam Neill‘s Stan-focused Episode 6, everyone in the family and the court of public opinion (including the West Palm Beach police) believed he was responsible for her disappearance.

Author Liane Moriarty writes twisty thrillers centered on complex female experiences within distinct socio-cultural settings, and her books have proven to be perfect for small-screen adaptations. The Liane Moriarty cinematic universe has now come to Peacock, but how does one adapt the author behind “Big Little Lies” and “Nine Perfect Strangers” work for the screen?
“Apples Never Fall” showrunner Melanie Marnich told IndieWire that maintaining beloved novelist Moriarty’s “page-turner energy” was key for adapting the twisted family drama starring Annette Bening and Sam Neill.
“The pacing of those kinds of moments was to make the TV show have the same page-turner energy of the book,” Marnich said. “It was something I had to really be aware of. In the writer’s room, we worked really hard to craft the sort of constant turn of the story. It was so juicy. I’m a huge fan of Liane. I really, really worked to capture that same page turner energy in the show to keep things moving, but also never at the sacrifice of character development.”

Everyone has done jobs they're not particularly proud of in their past. For actors, any of these past works are in the public eye, even if some go on to be largely forgotten. This includes the fan-favorite horror genre, from cheap, grindhouse and direct-to-video schlock to big-budget misfires. Beyond the quality of the movies, some actors just didn't have particularly pleasant experiences behind-the-scenes, leading them to distance themselves from their projects after completion. Every actor has a handful of films that they wish they hadn't signed on for, and with the benefit of hindsight, several have gone public with their regrets.
From established genre icons disappointed at their respective franchise returns to newcomers trying to get their start, horror has no shortage of movies Hollywood stars want off their resume. In a particular instance, one actor's horror movie experience led them to not only regret their participation, but quit acting altogether.

The finale of “Apples Never Fall” on Peacock fills in all the gaps left behind by the six episodes before it by pulling back the curtains of what happened to missing matriarch Joy Delaney (Annette Bening) from her own perspective.
After Joy, mother and core of the Delaney family, goes missing, her husband Stan (Sam Neill) and four children — Amy (Alison Brie), Troy (Jake Lacy), Logan (Conor Merrigan Turner) and Brooke (Essie Randles) — are forced to hash out long-simmering resentments and regrets while trying to figure out where Joy went.
The series is divided into standalone episodes through each family member’s perspective, with Stan and Joy’s episodes being the climactic final two as the mystery finally comes together.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains major spoilers for “Apples Never Fall,” now streaming on Peacock.
Known for her twisty and darkly humorous thrillers, Liane Moriarty is the author behind the source material for TV hits like HBO’s “Big Little Lies” and Hulu’s “Nine Perfect Strangers.” Like many of her stories, the newest Moriarty adaptation — Peacock’s “Apples Never Fall” — is centered on a suspenseful mystery, but showrunner Melanie Marnich was just as interested in what the author had to say about the complexities of family dynamics.
“You have to know these people love each other, otherwise they can’t cause each other pain,” Marnich told Variety at an early screening event for the series. “There’s a phrase in [Moriarty’s] book that’s something like: ‘You can love somebody and hate somebody. Both things can be true.’ You can look across the table at your husband, your wife or...

Alison Brie’s character Amy in “Apples Never Fall” does not operate like your typical eldest sibling. She lacks a steady source of income, is emotionally erratic and her housing situation is one shared with a group of graduate students.
But as the Peacock limited series’ third episode shows, she’s also perhaps the only Delaney with a healthy amount of emotional intelligence.
In the TV adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s 2021 novel of the same name, Joy Delaney (Annette Bening), matriarch of a competitive brood of tennis players, goes missing, prompting the four children and their father to revisit old wounds and unearth family secrets.
Episode 3, “Amy” serves as a bottle episode for the eldest daughter — following the structure lined up with episodes for Logan (Conor Merrigan Turner), Brooke (Essie Randles), Troy (Jake Lacy) and patriarch Stan (Sam Neill). In retracing her steps before her mother’s disappearance, one major...

Australian author Liane Moriarty is known for her layered characters, complex family dynamics, and intriguing mysteries. After the success of her book-to-screen adaptation of Big Little Lies on HBO in 2017, she's been in high demand.
In 2021, Hulu adapted another novel, Nine Perfect Strangers, which expanded on the characters' arcs from the book. It became a hit because of the humor in the series.
Peacock's Apples Never Fall combines the best of both, but it was most like the book and a fun, binge-worthy watch. I couldn't stop watching because I couldn't wait to see the next twist.
Apples Never Fall explores the complexities of marriage and family when you peel back the layers. This isn't a cookie-cutter happy family. The Delaneys are raw and honest, but they love each other deeply.

At Tuesday night’s premiere, Bening, Sam Neill, Jake Lacy and more shared their favorite memories from shooting the series in Australia and how they got into their respective characters.
Based on “Big Little Lies” author Liane Moriarty’s novel of the same name, “Apples Never Fall” follows former tennis coaches Stan (Neill) and Joy (Bening) Delaney, who sell their tennis academy and hope to spend more time with their adult children. But things take a turn when a mysterious young woman knocks on their door and enters their lives.
