With Dune: Part Two’s success, Rebecca Ferguson’s filmography—which features a lead in a highly regarded sci-fi series currently airing on Apple TV+—has garnered more recognition. Yes, we are discussing Graham Yost’s science fiction dystopian drama TV series Silo. The Swedish actress expertly donned the role of Juliette Nichols, who is entangled in a web of mystery spanning the past and present.
Having said that, she obviously had to put in a lot of work to deliver a strong and complex performance. If you were to find out that she had “studied trauma” in order to assume this role, how would you respond? Well, she actually did this.
Critics gave the series favorable reviews, praising Ferguson’s performance and the production design. However, the actress has not gotten the recognition that her stellar performance so richly merits.

Jodie Foster is having a good year. The two-time Oscar winner returned to the attention of the academy for the first time since 1995 with a nomination for “Nyad.” Now, she and showrunner Issa López have revamped HBO’s flagging “True Detective” with the best entry since the show’s first season.
“True Detective: Night Country” stars Foster as an acid-tongue, spiky police chief who is tasked with investigating the disappearance of eight men in the spooky, fictional town of Ennis, Alaska. Playing a detective will naturally harken viewers’ minds back to her turn as Clarice Starling in “The Silence of the Lambs,” the film for which she won her second Best Actress Oscar (“The Accused” being the other). It’s her meatiest role in years and Foster devours it.
Brian Tallerico (Roger Ebert) observed: “Our unsteady guiding hand through this darkness is Liz Danvers, played with icy perfection by Jodie Foster.

Robin Hood was a disappointment critically and commercially, but it still has elements worth appreciating.

Gerard Butler is reprising his role of Stoic the Vast in the upcoming live-action How to Train Your Dragon movie, begging the question of whether others will do the same. Cate Blanchett could reprise her role as Valka, bringing a sense of familiarity and continuity to the new film opposite Butler's Stoic. Kit Harington as Eret could seamlessly transition into the live-action adaptation, while Djimon Hounsou could take his amazing villain - Drago - and make him just as threatening in the remake.

Cate Blanchett and her producing partner Coco Francini told IndieWire the tagline for their new diversity grant program should be “Intensely Practical.” Ok, so it was at least partially a joke based on an off-the-cuff remark by Blanchett, but it’s also not a bad differentiator between their incubator and others.
Blanchett through the Proof of Concept Accelerator is offering eight filmmakers $50,000 to make short films from their unique POVs. The real value however may be in her selection committee: Chloé Zhao, Emma Corrin, Eva Longoria, Greta Gerwig, Jane Campion, Janicza Bravo, Lily Gladstone, and Lilly Wachowski.
The money (and the mentorship) is definitely practical, sure, but “intensely”? No one is more intensely practical than USC’s Dr. Stacy Smith.
Through her Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, Smith has studied diversity in entertainment for more than 20 years. She’d like to say the industry has changed before her very eyes, but it hasn’t.

Isabelle Huppert is open to expanding her already storied filmography to potentially even include one of the world’s biggest franchises: Marvel.
The Oscar winner said she would love to join the ranks of fellow Academy Award winners Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett as Marvel baddies, telling The Guardian that she would “love to” join a genre project, including the MCU, as a “real villain.” Even though it’s not like she hasn’t played malevolent women before.

School of Rock vet Jack Black shared one of his conditions for making the long-awaited sequel to the iconic 2003 music comedy.
During a recent interview with Joe, Black once again expressed his desire to star in a potential School of Rock sequel. "I wish there’d be a School of Rock 2: Electric Boogaloo," he said as he referenced the 1984 sequel to Breakin'. "I'm ready." Black believes that the project could only be possible if Emmy winner Mike White returns to write the screenplay. "You know Mike White wrote the first one, and he’s a genius," he continued. "And we’d have to have Mike White back in the saddle, but he’s real busy right now with White Lotus, the best show on TV."

Pierce Brosnan could finally have his big break with spy movie "Black Bag," casting him alongside top actors and directed by Steven Soderbergh. Soderbergh's success in the spy genre makes Brosnan's involvement promising, especially after previous unsuccessful attempts to replace James Bond. Despite a previous flop in the spy genre, Brosnan's charm and spy movie experience make him a good fit for a potential James Bond follow-up.
Pierce Brosnan may have just found his James Bond replacement with Black Bag, a whole decade after his last attempt to replace Bond ended in a box office disaster. Brosnan recently joined the cast of Black Bag, directed by Steven Soderbergh and due to begin production in May. After years of failing to secure a suitable replacement for the James Bond series, including a notable $34.8 million flop, this could be the big break Brosnan has been looking for.

“Mary & George” is the delicious new historical drama from British playwright D.C. Moore, who swaps out stuffy history lessons for a raucous, bawdy ride that fans of “The Favourite” will love. Like that Oscar-winning movie, this limited series on Starz focuses on an era of British royalty that is little-known to American audiences.
Julianne Moore plays the Countess of Buckingham, who groomed her son (Nicholas Galitzine) to seduce King James I (Tony Curran) in an attempt to curry favor, power, titles, and riches in 1600s England. In the titular role of Mary, Moore delivers another powerhouse performance. She owns every scene she’s in and proves once more why she is one of the best actresses working today. Critics agree, “Mary & George” is the Moore show.

The delicious “Mary & George” may well serve up a feast of Emmy nominations. This limited series on Starz stars Julianne Moore as the Countess of Buckingham, who groomed her son, George Villiers (Nicholas Galitzine), to seduce King James I (Tony Curran). The Countess uses her son as a pawn to scheme her way to riches, titles, and influence in 1600s England.
The series, adapted by award-winning playwright D.C. Moore from Benjamin Woolley’s bestseller “The King’s Assassin,” is a sumptuous period drama. The show is in the same vein as Yorgos Lanthimos‘ Oscar-winning “The Favourite,” swapping out the usual stuffy nature of such fare for a raucous, romp through history.
Moore, who won the Best Actress Oscar in 2015 for “Still Alice,” is on reliably good form here. She chews up every scene and commands the screen with authority. Galitzine, meanwhile, proves he is more than just the most...

One of the world’s most beloved fashion figures announced Tuesday that he’s stepping down from his eponymous brand. Belgian designer Dries Van Noten, 65, made the announcement in a letter sent to friends of the label.
“In the early 80’s, as a young guy in Antwerp, my dream was to have a voice in fashion,” Van Noten wrote. “Through a journey that brought me to London, Paris … that dream has come true. Now I want to shift my focus to all the things I never had time for.” This means his exceptionally well-reviewed fall 2024 women’s collection, shown in Paris weeks ago, will be his last. Anne Hathaway and Sandra Bullock appeared together in 2018’s heist comedy movie Ocean’s 8 directed by Gary Ross. The movie was the fourth installment and a spin-off from Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s series. The ensemble cast also included Mindy Kaling, Cate Blanchett, Sarah Paulson, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, and Awkwafina alongside Hathaway and Bullock.
The power-packed female-led movie received a positive response from the audience upon its release. It was however stated at the time that the movie wasn’t as smooth as its predecessors but the cast and their chemistry together blended well enough for the audience to enjoy. During the promotion of Ocean’8, the cast came across a host whose comments sickened the actresses.

Since the inception of the Academy Awards, the U.S.-based organization behind them has always strived to honor worldwide film achievements. Their extensive roster of competitive acting winners alone consists of artists from 30 unique countries, three of which first gained representation during the 2020s. The last full decade’s worth of triumphant performers hail from eight countries, while 42.1% of the individual actors nominated during that time originate from outside of America.
The academy’s history of recognizing acting talent on a global scale dates all the way back to the inaugural Oscars ceremony in 1929, when Swiss-born Emil Jannings (who was of German and American parentage) won Best Actor for his work in both “The Last Command” and “The Way of All Flesh.” Over the next three years, the Best Actress prize was exclusively awarded to Canadians: Mary Pickford (“Coquette”), Norma Shearer (“The Divorcee”), and Marie Dressler (“Min and Bill...

As shown by an MCU fan on Reddit, every MCU movie released so far features at least one Oscar winner, except for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Robert Downey Jr.'s 2024 Oscar win retroactively gives Avengers: Age of Ultron its only Academy Award winner. The MCU continues to attract top-tier actors, with upcoming Phase 5 projects featuring Oscar-nominated performers such as Hugh Jackman, Harrison Ford, Florence Pugh, and Mahershala Ali.
A surprising MCU statistic shows the impressive amount of A-list talent Marvel Studios has amassed throughout the years, revealing how every movie in the franchise has had at least one Oscar winner, except for one Phase 5 installment. Throughout the McU's 16-year history, dozens of accomplished performers have joined the franchise, including multiple actors who have won Oscars for Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor, either before or after their MCU debut. Oscar winner Cate Blanchett is lending her voice to a Netflix nature docuseries highlighting species surviving amid the climate crisis.
Four-part Netflix series “Our Living World” hails from Freeborne Media and Wild Space productions, the Emmy-winning team behind “Our Great National Parks.” The series uses cinematic wildlife photography, macro close-ups, underwater tapestries, and digital effects to capture the tallest and oldest tree in the forest to the smallest egg in a salmon’s spawning pool and every organism in between. Cuttlefish, beavers, rhinos, crabs, dragonflies, flying foxes, and more are featured in nature action shots.
The official synopsis reads: “Spanning continents and oceans, fueled by wind and water and fire, this network allows the densest forests to impact the coldest glaciers, and the deepest oceans to feed the hottest deserts. But with Earth now changing at unprecedented speeds due to human activity, our living world’s network is malfunctioning – and it will take all creatures,...

“House of Gods,” a Matchbox Pictures six-part series, boasting an entirely Arab Australian cast, presents a perspective seldom seen on screen, a Muslim community in Fairfield, Australia.
“You can’t manufacture authenticity. Audiences are so intuitive and adept, they can smell if something is off a mile away. So for us, having actors who understood the idiosyncrasies of Arab/Muslim culture added an intangible layer of soul to the show,” explained Osamah Sami, co-creator and one of the stars of the show.

Immigration often reinforces our desire to cling on to our motherland customs even tighter” Shahin Shafaei co-creator shared with Variety. “As storytellers, we have both previously highlighted the lived experiences of our community in film and theater. The significance of "The Two Towers" title in The Lord of the Rings film series remains a mystery to fans and even the author, J.R.R. Tolkien. Towers such as Orthanc and Minas Morgul play a crucial role in the narrative, holding vital objects and serving as key locations in the story. Tolkien initially intended The Lord of the Rings as one book, but due to paper shortages after WWII, he divided it into three books, leading to the title dilemma.
The Lord of the Rings is one of the greatest and most highly regarded franchises of all time, having produced six phenomenal films and a fairly enjoyable TV series set before the events of The Hobbit. Even though it has been more than two decades since the first The Lord of the Rings film was released, fans find ways to revisit the classics, as they should, given the amount of...

Many may not know the name Shirley Chisholm, but it is not for lack of Hollywood trying to keep her flame alive. The seven-term Brooklyn congresswoman, who became the first African American woman elected to Congress when she won in 1968, also became the first woman and first African American to seek the nomination for President of either major party when she ran for the Democratic nomination in 1972. She defined the word “trailblazer” and her story is indeed inspiring, if also frustrating for all the obstacles she had to overcome in a male-dominated business of governing. Uzo Aduba won an Emmy for her supporting role as Chisholm the 2020 limited series Mrs. America, even as the series itself was focused on conservative gadfly Phyllis Schaffly played by Cate Blanchett. That series touched on the 1972 campaign and thus Chisholm as well, but now, after 15 years of trying, Regina King has realized a longtime...

With just a touch of camp, Blanchett plays an imperious nun imposing Christianity on Indigenous orphans in Warwick Thornton’s enjoyable, enigmatic drama
Usually a director’s cut makes the film longer. Not this time. When Warwick Thornton’s new movie premiered at Cannes last year it ran at 116 minutes. Now, in time for its UK release, Thornton has reduced it to just over an hour and a half, removing a substantial 20 minutes. The effect is to sharpen focus and tighten up the final act – which is where I felt it sagged the first time around – and create a greater emphasis on the narrative give-and-take between Cate Blanchett’s antiheroine and the Indigenous Australian boy that she comes to care for. Yet for me there is still something a bit soft-edged about the drama, which doesn’t punch as hard as Thornton’s other films. And there’s a touch of camp – not un-enjoyable,...

2023 was a miraculous year for German actress Sandra Huller. Not only did she receive critical acclaim for her riveting portrayal of a woman on trial for murdering her husband in France’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” she was also praised for her role as the wife of a Nazi commander in the United Kingdom’s German-language “The Zone of Interest.” Indeed, there was much interest in Huller and her two films. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for “Anatomy.” And both “Anatomy” and “Zone” landed slots for Best Picture, as well as Best Director bids for Justine Triet and Jonathan Glazer, respectively.
As I was speaking to academy members ahead of last Sunday’s ceremony, I detected a surprisingly robust amount of support for Huller. And many of those who had voted for her mentioned her work in “The Zone of Interest.” It really did seem...

The 96th Academy Awards were a resounding success this year. Anatomy of a Fall was one of the films to be nominated for Best Picture. Even though it eventually lost to Christopher Nolan’s magnum opus, Oppenheimer, the French film left its mark.
The writers of the film, the French duo Justine Triet and Arthur Harrari, became the talk of the town during the awards season. Not only did they win big at the Oscars, but the grapevine suggests that Hollywood heavyweights are trying to do all they can to collaborate with Triet and Harrari.

Seeing as Cate Blanchett has been one of the most respected actresses for more than a quarter-century now, it’s best not to set her off. But it’s possible. And while Lydia Tár has her own musings on life, technology and Bach, what might get Cate Blanchett showing disgust than anything is trigger warnings.
Speaking with The Times, Cate Blanchett noted that difficult conversation is necessary in our society but is so rarely implemented, adding that so-called trigger warnings aren’t helping. “Culturally we are terrified of tough conversations. Boss to employee. Employee to boss. Friend to friend. But we need them. We talk about radical candour, but when there’s a trigger warning in front of something you are implying that there is a lack of mutual respect or that the subject hasn’t been properly interrogated.” Oh, we can just hear those words coming out of the mouth of Lydia Tár.

It's become something of a tradition here at Tfe to guess which just-celebrated actor will be back soonest for another Oscar season. Last year at this time you (collectively) guessed that Cate Blanchett (29%), Michelle Williams (15%), Paul Mescal (15%) and Barry Keoghan (9%) would be the quickest to return. Nobody returned immediately but of those four only Barry Keoghan (Saltburn) seemed like a real possibility this time around. But his film and even his performance were divisive so that happens.
Time to vote again, which of the 20 stars recently celebrated will be back shortly? Make your case in the comments section.

If Jennifer Lawrence can do it, why can’t Sydney Sweeney? We’re talking about digging into the archives of luxury brands — many of which have Met Costume Institute-sized archives of looks from the past 70 years or so.
For Vanity Fair‘s 2024 post-Oscar party, Lawrence ditched the polka dot Dior couture she wore to the Academy Awards, changing to a 1996 cream Chantilly lace puff sleeve dress by Givenchy, a slightly more revealing Bridgerton-style gown. Recycling ’90s styles has been a hot trend for more than a moment, but now it’s reached fever pitch.

Also for Vanity Fair‘s shindig, Sydney Sweeney dug deep into New York designer Marc Bouwer’s archives and plucked out the very same white satin gown that Angelina Jolie donned attending the 2004 Oscars.

Ceasefire pins among Oscar guests and nominees were numerous on this afternoon’s red carpet with Poor Things actor Ramy Youssef, Oscar nominated supporting actor Mark Ruffalo from that pic, as well as Barbie “What Was I Made For?” songwriting team Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell donning them.
Youssef told Deadline, “This is for Artists for Ceasefire” about the pin.
“We have a growing list of so many artists who want a permanent immediate ceasefire in Gaza,” the actor added.
“To get really universal about it, it’s about stop killing kids,” he continued.
“We’re using our voices to speak to people’s hearts,” he added, “we want people to have safety and justice.”
“It’s obvious something a lot of people have a lot of opinions about, and I think there can be a place and time to process feelings,” Youssef said, speaking about the divided political situation in Israel and Gaza.
