Buddy Adler was just two years into his brief reign as the Head of Production for 20th Century Fox in 1958 when producer Walter Wanger brought him an epic project that could potentially pull the then-struggling studio out of its box office slump. The film wound up soaring so far over budget that Fox would be forced to sell 180 acres of its Los Angeles backlot to Alcoa just to stay financially afloat.
Had Adler made "Cleopatra" on his own terms, the title role would've been a sensibly priced production toplined by one of the studio's affordable contract stars (e.g. Joan Collins or Joanne Woodward). Wanger, however, had outsized dreams. He saw the historical drama as a Hollywood epic for the ages. He believed in its potential to dominate the box office and win scores of Academy Awards. He wanted Elizabeth Taylor, arguably the most popular movie star on the planet,...

For Starwoids, the scene is immutable gospel: Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is taken by the old sage Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) into a rundown, sleazy cantina in the city of Mos Eisley on the planet Tatooine. They know they can find an off-the-books pilot-for-hire there, hoping to deliver an important message to a distant world, a message that could conceivably take down the entire evil Empire that rules the galaxy. Scanning the room, Luke and Obi-Wan find Han Solo (Harrison Ford), a ne'er-do-well smuggler who is in debt to the mob, but claims to have the fastest starship in the galaxy.
Luke is out of his element in the cantina. He's young and inexperienced in the realm of vice and crime. Obi-wan famously described the cantina as a hive of scum and villainy. Because Han was in his element in this bar, he was most assuredly a scummy villain. It...

Kim Gwizdala and Nikka Markarian have driven four hours to be here today. They’ve dressed in Dallas-style outfits (cropped jackets and black suede cowboy boots) and are sporting Reagan-era ’dos (blown out and heavily feathered). And now, these best friends from Las Vegas, both 32, will spend several more hours in line at a hotel in Burbank, waiting to meet the 83-year-old actress who, decades ago — before Gwizdala and Markarian were even born — played J.R. Ewing’s long-suffering wife. The character who tried to buy a baby on the black market, spent the better part of a season locked away in a sanitarium and whose sister shot her husband.
“Linda Gray!” they chime in unison, as if reciting a holy incantation.

Soap alum Jacob Young is set to star in and co-direct “Murder Between Friends,” an independent film about a legendary TV star who tries to solve a murder that occurred at her countryside estate. Joan Collins leads the cast, which also includes “Days of our Lives” alum Nadia Bjorlin (ex-Chloe Lane).
“It’s very Agatha Christie, sort of ‘Knives Out’ without having a hundred million dollars to shoot it, but still will be a lovely film nonetheless,” Young told Michael Fairman TV last month while out promoting another film he recently starred in called “Four For Fun.” Jason Cook directed that film, which also stars Brytni Sarpi.
Other actors set to appear in “Murder Between Friends” include British soap star Toby-Alexander Smith, Jim Borstelmann, Espen Hatleskog and Czech actress Hana Vagnerová. “All My Children” alum Trent Garrett (ex-Asher Pike) is reportedly set to co-direct alongside Young, with the film based...

What's the best "Star Trek" episode? Of the 79 produced in "The Original Series," the most highly-regarded is often season 1, episode 28, "The City on the Edge of Forever." We at /Film named it as the best "Star Trek" episode and we're not alone.
Here's the premise; the Enterprise is exploring a planet home to the Guardian of Forever, essentially a sentient time portal. Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) is accidentally injected with the fictional drug Cordrazine and leaps through the portal, disrupting the timeline and the main characters' present. So, Kirk (William Shatner) and Spock (Leonard Nimoy) follow McCoy, winding up in New York City during the Great Depression.
There, they meet Edith Keeler. Keeler is an idealistic woman who runs a soup kitchen and preaches pacificism; Kirk falls in love with her. Unfortunately, Spock discovers that unless Miss Keeler dies, she'll grow to become an influential activist who delays U.S.

The BBC have launched this year’s Comic Relief appeal, while Lenny Henry has also confirmed that he will step down as host.
Comic Relief launched in 1985 with a telethon that has since become embedded in British culture. Known as Red Nose Day, on account of the red noses sold as part of the appeal, over the years this has led to many classic comic moments, from The Young Ones singing Livin’ Doll with Cliff Richard, to Johnny Depp and Sting appearing in The Vicar Of Dibley, to Billy Connolly running naked through Trafalgar Square and Mr Bean infiltrating both Blind Date and a Torvill and Dean dance routine.
The BBC have launched this year’s appeal with a sketch featuring Alex Jones, Alison Hammond, Davina McCall, Gemma Collins, Dame Joan Collins, Jonathan Bailey, Nick Grimshaw, Rosie Jones and Simon Cowell, which you can see below:

A documentary series about Elizabeth Taylor is in the works at the BBC, with Kim Kardashian among the producers.
Elizabeth Taylor is undoubtedly one of the most iconic film stars of her era. By the mid 1960s, she was the highest paid film star in the world.
There have been copious books written and films made about the star too – Taylor has been portrayed by Helena Bonham Carter, Lindsay Lohan, Sherilyn Fenn and Louella Parsons among others; a biopic called A Special Relationship starring Rachel Weisz and written by Simon Beaufoy was announced in 2019, but there has been no news since then.
Now though, the BBC has commissioned a three part documentary, Elizabeth Taylor: Rebel Superstar, which will be executive produced by Kim Kardashian, Kari Lia and Hamish Fergusson.

Kim Kardashian is set to both executive produce and feature in an upcoming docuseries about Elizabeth Taylor.
Commissioned by the BBC, the three-part documentary — given the working title “Elizabeth Taylor: Rebel Superstar” — is coming from the Oscar-winning “Searching for Sugar Man” production house Passion Pictures, behind the recent Sundance hit “Super/Man” about Christopher Reeve.
The series will take a deep dive into Taylor’s craft and technique as an actor — one who mesmerized cinema-goers, but also changed the relationship between audiences and stars — showing how she reinvented the nature of fame, even as she smashed the glass ceiling in Hollywood, before going on to become a billion-dollar businesswoman, activist and advocate. Fremantle will be shopping the doc series globally.

Actors and actresses might approach red carpet dressing with all sorts of mindsets — nervous and unsure, risk-averse or highly opinionated, for example — but Wayman + Micah say Taraji P. Henson falls into a client category every stylist should love.
“We started working together last April when we started promoting The Color Purple, and it’s been an amazing partnership ever since,” says Wayman Bannerman, who alongside partner Micah McDonald also counts Niecy Nash-Betts, Colman Domingo and Da’Vine Joy Randolph among their starry client roster. “We have had such a blast being creative over the exciting and extensive press tour. [Taraji] has a great personal sense of style and loves to dress up, so we are always excited to show her new pieces, because she gets so excited.”
Taraji P. Henson hits the carpet at the Emmys, where she took the stage to present alongside Joan Collins for outstanding limited or anthology series.

There’s some obvious good news about this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards. The show, hosted by Anthony Anderson, and dedicated to celebrating 75 years of television for the 75th annual Emmy ceremony, was about as solid and entertaining as modern awards telecasts get: lots of nostalgia, lots of reminders of why we love the medium being honored, and a minimum of prolonged comedy bits that don’t work. It wasn’t perfect, but it had energy and strong feelings for nearly all of its three-hour running time.

Four months late and coming off the heels of two strikes, an awkward Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards, there perhaps weren’t many expectations leading into the 75th Primetime Emmys. When actor Anthony Anderson was announced as the host, it seemed like a safe albeit humdrum choice — until news of past sexual assault allegations against the actor began to resurface and go viral, and what had seemed tame became something more unsettling. Yet despite the Anderson controversy, the Television Academy surprised viewers and attendees by delivering a delightful Emmys, honoring classic TV and its legends, while celebrating the shows we love and revere now.
Anderson opened the Emmys with a clever spoof of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” and honored several shows and their iconic theme songs — practically a lost art in television today. The “Black-ish” and “Law & Order” alum hit the nail on the head in a pleasingly...

Herman Raucher, the best-selling author and screenwriter who earned an Oscar nomination for the coming-of-age classic Summer of ’42 and wrote the script for the thought-provoking Watermelon Man, has died. He was 95.
Raucher died Thursday of natural causes at Stamford Hospital in Stamford, Connecticut, his daughter Jenny Raucher told The Hollywood Reporter.
Raucher, who started out in live television, penned the screenplays for two Anthony Newley-starring films: Sweet November (1968), directed by Robert Ellis Miller and also featuring Sandy Dennis, and Can Heironymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness? (1969), featuring Joan Collins.
He also was given inspiration from Bobbie Gentry’s 1967 hit song to write the screenplay to Ode to Billy Joe (1976), a love story that starred Robby Benson and Glynnis O’Connor and was helmed by Max Baer Jr.

The image of Santa Claus has been curated over the years to become wholesome and a symbol of happiness. In the past, he had been seen as a representation of Saint Nicholas or Father Christmas. In the 80s, he seemed to take a darker turn as horror filmmakers decided to use his visage to corrupt the viewer’s expectations. This sweet and gentle man would now be a killer. Multiple films decided to use this idea, and a whole sub-genre of horror films was born. Which ones are the best killer Santa movies?

Exclusive: Tony- and Olivier Award-winning actor Bertie Carvel, who portrays Tony Blair opposite Imelda Staunton’s Queen Elizabeth II in the final season of The Crown, remembers meeting the the real Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace “and nearly head-butting” her “in my attempt to try not to be too obsequious, but to follow the right form.”
He still has a photo of him being introduced to the monarch at an event nine years ago. “I look like the Mr. Bean sketch where he bows and knocks her out. I’m so towering over the queen and I look like I really should have gone to the barber, and I was red-faced and hairy.”
Well, The Crown’s crack hair and makeup team led by designer Cate Hall has ensured that he’s respectfully coiffured to portray Blair.

Every Sex and the City fan will instantly recognize two high-wattage looks up for sale in the latest event presented by Julien’s Auctions — one piece worn onscreen by series star and executive producer Sarah Jessica Parker — as they’ve transcended the function of costumes or fashion to become part of the show’s enduring iconography.
“Unstoppable: Signature Styles of Iconic Women in Fashion” is indeed an apt title for an upcoming auction that includes the three-tiered belted tutu skirt worn by Parker in Satc‘s opening credits (and again in the 2008 movie). The skirt was famously purchased by the show’s costume designer, Patricia Field, who discovered the piece in a $5 bargain bin and fashioned it into one of the most-recognized looks in the series.

The British studios, which filled screens with bloody fangs, gothic monsters and heaving bosoms, have been resurrected for the 21st century
Think of a classic horror film with an archetypal character such as Frankenstein or Dracula, or a movie with a name that does what it says on the tin, like Tales from the Crypt or Beyond the Grave, and the chances are you are thinking of a product by one of the “twins of evil”.
Hammer and Amicus were the studios that defined British horror cinema and bestrode the 1960s and 1970s, employing a wealth of British acting talent including Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. Casts included names such as Michael Gough, Ralph Bates, Ingrid Pitt, Patrick Magee and Joan Collins.

Joan Collins steps out of the chauffeur-driven limo – white frock, wide-brimmed white hat, huge shades, rocks on her fingers. Even if she wasn’t Joan Collins, you would stop to look. Some people just have the air of a star. At 90, hers shows no sign of waning – although, as she reminds me a number of times, we don’t discuss age in Dame Joan’s world.
This is one of her favourite restaurants, close to her home in south-west London. We are here to talk about her new one-woman show and book, called Behind the Shoulder Pads. The head waiter directs us to our table in the corner. He is delighted to see Collins. And Collins is delighted to be here.

Joan Collins, now 90, has had a storied movie and television career. She rose to fame in 1952 after appearing in the British film I Believe In You. Collins moved her career to the United States, believing that after several years in the British film industry, she had a handle on how the business worked. After a serendipitous meeting with Marilyn Monroe over martinis, Joan Collins learned she had underestimated just how predatory Hollywood was. In a recently published essay, Collins recalled the chance encounter with Marilyn Monroe and how she warned her about the dark side of Hollywood.
Joan Collins said Marilyn Monroe warned her about the Hollywood ‘wolves’
Joan Collins penned an article for The Daily Mail earlier this month. In the article, the starlet opened up about the predatory nature of Hollywood and exactly how she learned about it. She said she met Marilyn Monroe when she was new to the scene.

Dame Joan Collins is set to play Wallis Simpson in a new biopic. The 90-year-old actress revealed she is hoping to play the late Duchess of Windsor - who died in 1986 aged 89 - in 'In Bed with the Duchess', which will cover the last 15 years of the American divorcee's life.Joan said of Wallis - whose marriage to King Edward VIII caused him to abdicate - in an interview with The Sunday Times magazine: "I’ve read so much about her. She was feisty and she was peppy. She was extremely well dressed. She was great company. "She was never a b****, but people think of her as the worst woman who ever lived. I’ve been so fascinated by that because it just goes to show how you can be tainted by everybody’s opinion, even when it is wrong. In fact, she begged the Prince of Wales not to marry her.

Captain Kirk goes back in time and has a powerful romance that ends in tragedy, a choice made for the greater good. Yes, that synopsis does describe the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds episode “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow,” in which La’an and an alternate version of James Kirk share an adventure and a kiss in 21st-century Toronto before that Kirk dies in action.
But Star Trek fans may also recognize that synopsis as a description of one of the best episodes of the Original Series, “The City on the Edge of Forever.”
Written by Harlan Ellison, “The City on the Edge of Forever” finds Spock and Kirk traveling to 1930 to rescue an insane and time-displaced McCoy. Along the way, Kirk befriends a social worker and peace activist named Edith Keeler (Joan Collins) and quickly falls for her. But when Spock discovers that McCoy’s arrival prevented Keeler’s accidental death,...

In some ways, "Strange New Worlds" has emerged as the true successor to "Star Trek: The Next Generation," despite the fact that the recently ended "Star Trek: Picard" actually featured the core cast of "The Next Generation" in its third and final season. For one thing, "Strange New Worlds" is lit better; no longer are we aboard the bridge of a shadowy starship. In both color and tone, the series embraces the bright optimism and humanism that was once central to the "Star Trek" ethos. It's also less of a legacy sequel — wedded to a warehouse of Easter eggs and recycled old plotlines — and more of a legacy prequel.
"Strange New Worlds" takes place before "Star Trek: The Original Series," and it's set aboard the same ship, the USS Enterprise (Ncc-1701), where new versions of familiar characters like Spock (Ethan Peck) and Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) find themselves getting caught...

Whether it is because of chemicals in the water, scientific experiments gone wrong, or mother nature taking revenge, animals running amok has provided cinema with an endlessly entertaining series of films over the years. The hilarious hit comedy horror Cocaine Bear, inspired by the true story of a bear going on the rampage in the Chattahoochee National Forest after ingesting a stash of cocaine, might just be the craziest yet.

It was the U.K.’s first coronation in 70 years — a cause even Hugh Jackman, Tom Cruise and Pierce Brosnan had to celebrate.
A star-studded lineup for King Charles III’s Coronation Concert took to an enormous stage on Windsor Castle grounds, the historic building a shimmering backdrop for a crowd of 20,000 on Sunday night.
The polished gardens — tidy from the monarch’s “7 a.m. weeding,” joked Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville, who served as host for the event — were a sea of red, white and royal blue as fans across the country gathered to toast to the king and queen.
In and among performances from Katy Perry, Nicole Scherzinger and Lionel Richie (the latter managing to tempt the king out of his seat for some bobbing to All Night Long) were video messages of congratulations and “Did you know?” facts about Charles from Hollywood royalty.
