Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal headline the first of two 2025 releases from Guy Ritchie: In The Grey. More here.
Busy times in the life of Guy Ritchie. He’s currently doing promotional work for his incoming film, The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which is landing over the coming weeks. Yet even as he’s talking about that, he’s already in post-production on his next project, due from Lionsgate early next year.
Things we already knew: Ritchie has written the script as well as directing, while the cast features Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaall, Eiza Gonzalez, Carlos Bardem, Fisher Stevens, Jason Wong, and Rosamund Pike.
It was revealed too that it was an action film, one that shot in the Canary Islands last autumn. In terms of further details though, they were on the scant side, and we didn’t even have a title.
Now we have a title. And...

Deadline reports a new sports documentary is being planned for kickboxing champion and martial arts movie star Benny “The Jet” Urquidez. The names associated with the production almost seems like a bingo announcer called out randomly drawn names from my favorite childhood movies. Keanu Reeves, who himself is no stranger to the martial arts world and action genre, has partnered with Fisher Stevens, who is known for projects like Short Circuit 1 & 2 and Hackers, to produce the documentary on Urquidez, whom I’ve talked about before on my Dragons Forever retrospective.
The documentary, which is titled The Jet, is currently in production with the Emmy-nominated sports documentary editor turned filmmaker, Jennifer Tiexiera, directing the film. Tiexiera has most recently also directed a three-part series for HBO called Unveiled: Surviving La Luz del Mundo, which has also recently been nominated for an Emmy in the catagory of Outstanding Crime and Justice Documentary.

“The Crown” is gearing up for its last hurrah at the SAG Awards, an organization that has bestowed a number of prizes onto the Netflix regal show over the years. It claimed the highly coveted TV drama ensemble prize twice (2019 and ’20), while individual winners through the years were Claire Foy (2016 and ’17), John Lithgow (2016) and Gillian Anderson (2020). Now the sixth and final season is hoping to prevail for a third time, which would tie it with “Downton Abbey” in this category at three total wins.
Season 6 faces off in the TV drama ensemble race against fellow nominees “The Gilded Age,” “The Last of Us,” “The Morning Show” and “Succession.” Elizabeth Debicki is “The Crown’s” only solo acting nominee this year, with her co-nominees in the TV drama actress category being Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) and Sarah Snook (“Succession”).

"This is an unsanctioned, unauthorized mission." Lionsgate has revealed an official trailer for Guy Ritchie's new WWII action film titled The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, arriving in theaters this April. Ritchie already deliver another war film last year with The Covenant, and also has The Gentlemen series coming up, now he's heading back to WWII to tell the origin story of covert Black Ops missions. The British military recruits a small group of highly-skilled soldiers to strike against Nazi forces behind enemy lines. Billed as a true story about a secret British World War II organization: the Special Operations Executive. Founded by Winston Churchill, their irregular warfare against the Nazis helped to change the course of the war and gave birth to modern black operations. The massive ensemble cast features Henry Cavill as Gus March-Phillips, with Eiza González, Alan Ritchson, Henry Golding, Alex Pettyfer, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Babs Olusanmokun,...

Has anyone told Guy Ritchie that it's totally okay to take a nap, get some water, or slow down before he burns himself out? The prolific English film director, producer, and screenwriter has been firing on all cylinders for the last 25 years, churning out thrillers, action comedies, spy dramas, and even a live-action Disney movie to boast one of the most impressive filmographies of any director working today. Last year saw the release of both "Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre" and "Guy Ritchie's The Covenant," with the latter hitting theaters in April. Now, Ritchie's next film is slated for release almost a year later to the day with "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare." I say this with the utmost love and respect — that's a title that sounds like the result of a "Guy Ritchie Movie" movie title generator. This is to say, I'll absolutely be there on opening night to catch this nonsense.

This year’s SAG Awards nominations for drama ensemble run the gamut in terms of total cast members nominated. You have “The Gilded Age” on one side with a jaw-dropping 34 people represented. And then you have “The Last of Us” on the other side with just two — hi, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey! HBO’s zombie apocalypse series has now tied the Screen Actors Guild record with “Key and Peele,” which was the first TV show to nab an ensemble citation with just two stars: Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.
The “Key and Peele” funny duo lost to “Orange Is the New Black” for comedy ensemble in 2016, which had a whopping 34 cast members nominated that year. Hmm, a two-person cast losing to a 34-person ensemble? Might SAG Awards history repeat itself? “The Last of Us” competes this year against “The Gilded Age” (34 cast members), “Succession” (18), “The Crown” (15) and “The Morning Show...

The International Documentary Association (IDA), Cinema Eye Honors and Gotham Awards have delivered their verdicts on the top feature docs of the year. And, for the streamers, it’s a grim result.
Absent from the Gothams’ doc feature selections, the Cinema Eye’s top feature and director noms and the IDA’s 17-title shortlist are titles from Netflix, Prime Video and Apple TV+.
The lists read, in the words of one leading awards publicist, “like a giant fuck-you to Netflix.” And with Oscar campaigning in high gear, they pose the question: Is a streamer backlash brewing?
The Gotham noms are mostly non-u.S. productions, including Kino Lorber’s Four Daughters, PBS’ 20 Days in Mariupol and Cinema Guild’s Our Body. Likewise, the IDA’s shortlisted titles included Morocco’s The Mother of All Lies, Colombia’s Anhell69, South African artist portrait Milisuthando, the CBC-backed Twice Colonized and the BBC-backed,...

The 80s. It has given us so much in pop culture. From the best Saturday Morning Cartoons, the greatest action figure series of all time, and some of the most quotable movies. You can’t talk about 80s films without thinking of movies like Back To The Future or The Breakfast Club. If someone says, “Goonies never say die,” then you know it’s someone you can hold a conversation with.
The flip side of this is that over the last 40 years (gulp!), society has changed. Somewhat for the better, but there are still downsides. Now, when you look back at some of your favorite 80s films, you might find that maybe they haven’t aged as well as you had hoped. What childhood memories can we ruin by figuring out which 80s movies haven’t aged well?

David Beckham did not watch his Netflix documentary until it premiered, the streamer’s head of unscripted has revealed.
Brandon Riegg used the revelation to talk up how Netflix retained editorial control on the series, speaking to a debate in the docs world that has caught fire since last year’s Harry & Meghan documentary.
The former football star’s Studio 99 outfit produced the hit series but Riegg said “we did not give away full editorial control and retained the final cut.”
“We talk to all partners and want them to feel invested but also understand that our job is to tell the best version of that story,” said Riegg at Content London. “It’s no different to any relationship, you build up trust over time. Franchising is basically the bread and butter of the horror genre. It doesn't matter what critics think. It doesn't even matter if the iconic central villain is killed at the end of the movie. Where there's a will, there's a way -- and writers can always be persuaded to come up with new explanations for why their characters are put back in similarly horrific scenarios.
Within the genre, you could make the argument that sequels are the rule rather than the exception, and even subpar horror films often end up becoming franchises, whether their follow-up films are given a theatrical release or not. (Direct-to-video sequels are also a long-term staple for scary movies.) This is especially true for teen horror movies, since younger audiences have always been a target demographic for these types of films.
But every once in a while, you get a teen horror flick that's one-and-done, without a sequel on the horizon.

Almost two weeks ago, Netflix dropped its Beckham docuseries — giving viewers perhaps the most access ever to the soccer star subject. That has less to do with the project’s four-plus-hour runtime, however, than it does with the fact that David Beckham, for all of his fame, has never been much of a talker.
“I don’t think the guy ever sat for more than 20 minutes in his life and talked about himself,” Fisher Stevens tells The Hollywood Reporter. The documentarian (The Lincoln Project, Bright Lights, Before the Flood) and actor (Succession, Asteroid City), who directed and produced the instantly popular series that still sits atop the streamer’s global Top 10, spent days with David Beckham to coax out some candor on his complicated career and personal life. Produced by Beckham’s Studio 99 and Ventureland, the second episode in the series also performed well, netting nearly 2.9M viewers.
The figures only include people watching on television sets, meaning that viewing on mobile devices does not feature in the numbers.
The two Beckham episodes occupied positions 18 and 39 respectively in Barb’s list of the most-watched UK shows in the week to October 8.

“The Fall of the House of Usher” opened in second place the Netflix Top 10 English-Language TV chart during the Oct. 9-15 viewing window as it conjured up 6.3 million total views in its first four days of availability. Hailing from “The Haunting of Hill House” creator Mike Flanagan and based on the writings of Edgar Allen Poe, the chilling limited series was undoubtedly pushed by the spooky season as viewers watched the Usher family dynasty rise and crumble.
David and Victoria Beckham’s Netflix docuseries continued to remain in the No. 1 spot this week, pulling 11.6 million views in its first full week of availability. From director Fisher Stevens and producer John Battsek, the documentary offered an intimate look at the soccer phenom, telling his fans who he truly is behind closed doors. Urban legends are mostly just that, the stuff of legends. They can inspire some people to do horrifying things and create urban legends of their own. Very often, these stories get the movie or show treatment whether they hue close to anything factual or not. One of the most famous examples of this urban legend which has a serial killer acting out some of the most famously told tales. Often movies that use the “inspired by” tag don’t have much to do with their source material like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre being merely inspired by Ed Gein. What happens when a legend inspires a movie and then the real story comes out years later?...

Moviegoers are truly living in the golden age of post-credit scenes. What was once considered something of a novelty has been rendered a necessity in an era when the Marvel Cinematic Universe and other film franchises are expanding faster than Dwayne Johnson’s biceps in a 5 a.m. weight session. However, the concept’s origins date back further than the dawn of the superhero movie era or anything equally fast and furious. Back in 1966, in fact, Dean Martin was proving to the world that not all heroes wear capes or drive ludicrously fast cars; some prefer a suave suit and a scotch. He may have been known as a crooner, but in the 1960s, Martin also played the part of Matt Helm, a U.S. government counter agent in a series of films based on books by author Guy Hamilton.

Few things in life are as enticing as Tom Hiddleston in a suit, so for some viewers, that might be reason enough to check out the second season of Marvel’s time-traveling series “Loki,” which returned this week and finds the God of Mischief teaming up with Mobius (Owen Wilson) and B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku) to save the Tva after Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) killed He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors) at the end of the first season. But we can give you a few more reasons to check out the exciting Season 2 premiere, which is now streaming on Disney+.

My first introduction to David Beckham was the infamous Argentina versus England round-of-16 match in the 1998 FIFA World Cup. That was my first tryst with international football, and I also became an Argentina fan just because the majority of my family were Brazil supporters, and I had to be a rebellious kid. So Beckham, as I heard, was the biggest threat to my team. Argentina won that match on penalty, but more importantly, Beckham had to leave the field in the forty-seventh minute of the game after getting a red card. The red card was a farce. Even the man who was fouled by Beckham, Argentine midfielder Diego Simeone, says so in the Netflix documentary series. The Fisher Stevens docuseries highlights the infamous incident, along with all the other significant moments of David Beckham’s life, in the span of four hour-long episodes.

In “Beckham,” the new Netflix docuseries chronicling the famous footballer’s life and career, David Beckham and his wife Victoria Beckham, aka Posh Spice, each tell their respective sides of their love story. But one particular interview with Victoria caused David to step in and set the facts straight.
In the series’ first episode, Victoria explains what initially drew her to David, saying: “I think also we both come from families that work really hard. Both of our parents work very hard, we’re very working class.”
David then pops his head in the door from the other room and sternly tells Victoria: “Be honest!”
“I am being honest,” she replies. But David counters, “What car did your dad drive you to school in?”
Though Victoria says “it’s not a simple answer” and “it depends,” David insists and she eventually relents, admitting: “Ok, in the ’80s my dad had a Rolls Royce.

This morning, Netflix dropped its four-part docuseries Beckham, about the life and times of British footballer and pop-culture icon David Beckham. Directed by Fisher Stevens, the docuseries primarily explores Beckham’s time on the pitch playing for England (and losing in the World Cup), Manchester United, and Real Madrid. Rather puzzlingly, the elements that transformed Beckham into a global superstar off-field, like his modeling career or the film Bend It Like Beckham, are largely ignored. It’s essentially his The Last Dance — an athlete-sanctioned docuseries that delves only into the...

There’s no better way to encapsulate David Beckham’s unbridled star power than the story of how Fisher Stevens ended up directing his Netflix docuseries “Beckham.”
“I got a call from Leo DiCaprio’s office,” recalls Stevens, who directed the DiCaprio-produced 2016 climate change film “The Flood.” “Leo and David were hanging out, and David [had] been looking for a director of his documentary — and Leo suggested me.”
The anecdote doesn’t end there. Stevens, a multi-hyphenate who won an Oscar for producing the 2009 dolphin documentary “The Cove,” and appeared on three seasons of HBO’s hit series “Succession” as Waystar Royco publicist Hugo, wasn’t sure he wanted to take on the job directing the Beckham project. “I didn’t really know much about him other than, you know, he was kind of a good-looking brand guy married to a Spice Girl,” he tells Variety.

The result is an intimate portrait of a man as well as a chronicle of late-modern sports and celebrity culture.
