It’s hard to escape all the news reports and late-night pundits discussing the fact that the nominees for President this year are elderly. Joe Biden is 82; Donald Trump is 77 but will be 78 by the time of the election. Let’s face it, Washington, D.C. has become “No District for Old Men.”
But do you know which best director Oscar nominee is in his 80s? Martin Scorsese. He’s 81 and still on the top of his game earning his 10th nomination for best director for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” But instead of being a punchline on late night TV,...

Christopher Nolan and Michael Caine are a duo who have frequently collaborated together for several years in Hollywood. From The Dark Knight trilogy to Interstellar, Caine was an integral part of Nolan’s films until Oppenheimer.
Since the duo had worked together for several years, Michael Caine joked that he would not like to work in Oppenheimer and would like to sit this one out. In response, Christopher Nolan stated that he needed 7 different actors as replacements for Michael Caine’s absence in Oppenheimer!

What, exactly, was Albert Einstein’s involvement in the creation of the atomic bomb — and how did the world’s most famous physicist grapple with the morality of that work? The existential threat posed by nuclear weapons has resurfaced in popular culture in large part due to Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-nominated Oppenheimer, in which Einstein (played by Tom Conti) is depicted advising J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist who played a pivotal role in the development of atomic weapons.
In reality Oppenheimer and Einstein likely only met a few times — their relationship has been described as “cordial and complicated” — and, ultimately, Einstein’s contributions to Oppenheimer’s work were theoretical and indirect. However, the foundation of Einstein’s work undeniably influenced all scientists’ understanding of physics moving forward, and those foundations are explored in Einstein and the Bomb, a new docudrama from director Anthony Philipson. “Oppenheimer” was notably marketed in the press as the sixth collaboration between director Christopher Nolan and star Cillian Murphy, who was finally getting his chance to lead a Nolan movie after five supporting turns in films such as “Batman Begins” and “Dunkirk.” Nolan has another longtime collaborator in Michael Caine, who got a special shoutout when the filmmaker accepted the BFI Fellowship this week at the British Film Institute chairman’s dinner (via The Independent).
Nolan, who many awards pundits agree is the BAFTA and Oscar frontrunner for best director and best picture thanks to “Oppenheimer,” remembered Caine joking to him about not being able to star in the atomic bomb epic.
”Okay, enough is enough,” Caine told his frequent collaborator.
“I had to go off on my own,” Nolan said about his reaction to Caine sitting “Oppenheimer” out. “So, okay, I haven’t got Michael Caine, I’d better get Matt Damon,...

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was the surprise warm-up act at a prestigious film industry event in London on Wednesday night that saw Oppenheimer director — and BAFTA and Oscar front runner — Christopher Nolan receive the British Film Institute Fellowship Award for his outstanding contribution to cinema.
The premier hailed Nolan — whose credits also include the Dark Knight trilogy, Inception and Dunkirk — as “undoubtedly one of our preeminent filmmakers.”
However, before doing so, he delivered quips with an aplomb that had guests seated in the ballroom of London’s Rosewood Hotel in stitches.
“Politics is showbusiness for ugly people,” Sunak declared. The room liked that one, even though the line’s a golden oldie.
“So, I was pleasantly surprised,” he continued, “when I was recently mistaken for Timothée Chalamet.”
Then with a well-timed pause, he added, “At least, I think that’s why they were shouting ‘Wonka’ at me.”

Robert M. Young, the adventurous director who called the shots for Edward James Olmos in The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez, Farrah Fawcett in Extremities and Tom Hulce and Ray Liotta in Dominick and Eugene, died Feb. 6, his son Andrew announced. He was 99.
After getting his start in educational and documentary films, Young also directed the 1969 Peabody-winning CBS telefilm J.T., written by Jane Wagner. Revolving around a Harlem youngster (Kevin Hooks) and an alley cat, it bowed on a Saturday afternoon and was repeated in primetime as the network preempted its most popular show, Gunsmoke.
Young also served as cinematographer, producer and co-writer with director Michael Roemer on the critically acclaimed drama Nothing But a Man (1964), featuring Ivan Dixon and jazz vocalist Abbey Lincoln as a struggling young Black couple in Alabama.

It can be said that Christopher Nolan has always known how to end a movie. From Leonard Shelby concluding his journey where it began and asking “now where was I?” in Memento to the topper that wouldn’t stop spinning in Inception, this is a filmmaker who looks for the most potent image that will burrow its way into audiences’ heads.
Yet the final scene of his most ambitious film to date is something more impressive, if altogether disquieting. Oppenheimer definitely implants a grim idea in the viewer’s mind, but it does so by giving the uncanny impression that we are seeing it through J. Robert Oppenheimer’s eyes first. Standing by the duck pond that Albert Einstein (Tom Conti) has been consigned to by posterity, and where Oppie will be joining him in exile sooner than he realizes, the man credited with fathering...

In Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," Albert Einstein (Tom Conti) only briefly appears. The famous scientist shares a few scenes with Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) himself, but these interactions are pivotal to the Manhattan Project, and the haunting realization about the world's future towards the end. There seems to be a misunderstanding regarding the involvement of the real Einstein in the creation of the atomic bomb — while the scientist's popular E = mc^2 equation does explain the theoretical nitty-gritty of the massive energy released by an atomic bomb, it does not provide any instructions for actually building one. Einstein was, in fact, denied security clearance to be involved with the Manhattan Project, and did not have a close relationship with Oppenheimer until the last decade of his life.

Last awards season, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” won almost everything at the 29th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. Its four victories were for actress Michelle Yeoh, supporting actress Jamie Lee Curtis, supporting actor Ke Huy Quan and best ensemble cast. While the scope of the sweep surprised many, the film’s triumph in the top category was widely expected.
This year, it doesn’t appear likely that any film will match the unprecedented SAG Awards feat achieved by “Everything.” However, I do think that current Gold Derby frontrunner “Oppenheimer” will maintain its lead, and ultimately will win the guild’s prestigious best ensemble prize. Here are five reasons why.
1. It boasts a cast filled with heavyweights.
In addition to the title role portrayed by Cillian Murphy, “Oppenheimer” features a roster of highly respected industry talent. That includes previous SAG Award champions Robert Downey Jr. (TV’s “Ally McBeal”), Emily Blunt...

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss Best Supporting Actor, where four spots feel secure.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday, and we’re Kenough? One week after typing about the truly unhinged race for Best Supporting Actress, we’re back to put some words on the page about Best Supporting Actor. Fortunately, this category feels a little more firmed up — with four actors heavily predicted by experts, pundits, and regular folks. It starts with Robert Downey Jr. for “Oppenheimer,” the favorite here, and with good reason. He’s a huge star whom everyone loves and he’s in the biggest movie that’s the Best Picture frontrunner and his performance is amazing. That doesn’t mean Downey will win, but as we talked...

To celebrate the release of Mark Cousins’ new documentary The Storms of Jeremy Thomas, a portrait of the Oscar-winning producer responsible for bringing to life films by David Cronenberg, Jonathan Glazer, Jim Jarmusch, Bernardo Bertolucci, Nagisa Ôshima, Jerzy Skolimowski, and many more, NYC’s Quad Cinema is fittingly paying tribute to his career with a fantastic retrospective.
“Jeremy Thomas Presents” kicks off today and runs through September 28 at Quad Cinema, with The Storms of Jeremy Thomas opening this Friday, September 22. As the retrospective commences, we’re pleased to exclusively share the trailer along with comments directly from Thomas looking back at the making of these iconic films.

I was sent a script with a Jonathan Glazer attached, called “Sexy Beast”. It was on a Friday night, and I read it over the weekend. The screenplay was brilliant, and on the Monday I bought it before anyone else could.

It is 2023, and streaming services are constantly in our faces and on our TVs and devices. Whether it be Max (or The Artist Formerly Known As HBO Max), Apple TV+, Disney+, Paramount+, or old stalwarts like Netflix, Hulu, and Prime Video, it seems like we have unlimited options for content.
But even with genre-specific services like Shudder and Screambox, free-services full of movies like Tubi, or deep cut catalogs like The Criterion Channel or Arrow Player, there are still many movies which are not currently available on any service, so we have to call physical media in for the rescue.
Here are 5 excellent horror movies that are not available to stream, rent, or buy on any digital service, but do have excellent physical media Blu-ray and 4K Uhd releases.

Christopher Nolan directed the epic biographical thriller film ‘Oppenheimer’ which is adapted from Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s biography ‘American Prometheus’.
The plot focuses on the early studies of Oppenheimer and how he directed the Manhattan Project during WWII and his fall from grace owing to his security hearing in 1954.
When Has ‘Oppenheimer’ been Released?
Director Sam Mendes expressed interest in adapting Bird and Sherwin’s biography ‘American Prometheus’ following its publication in 2005.
But during the next fifteen years, the authors grew pessimistic about a film adaptation of their work which caused the project not to be materialized.
Finally, in September 2021, it was announced that Christopher Nolan would write and direct the biographical film with Cillian Murphy in negotiations as a lead cast member.
It is the sixth collaboration of Nolan and Murphy and the first one in which Murphy starred as a lead.

So we watched Oppenheimer on IMAX Laser. After writing a vast amount of articles dealing with the cinematography aspects of the film, we didn’t imagine how great the sound is. Indeed, the sound is brilliant and layered by the outstanding score composed by Ludwig Göransson. That was combined extremely well with the IMAX closeups.

“Oppenheimer” is one of Christopher Nolan‘s best movies according to both critics and audiences. While the film’s script, technical achievements, and directing are all being praised, however, it’s the cast that makes the film pop. Simply put, it is one of the most stacked casts in cinema history outside of, say, “Avengers: Endgame.”
Cillian Murphy leads the line in the titular role of Robert J. Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, while “Endgame” actor himself, Robert Downey Jr., portrays political player Lewis Strauss and Emily Blunt is Oppenheimer’s wife, Kitty. Matt Damon, Kenneth Branagh, Tom Conti, Florence Pugh, and Alden Ehrenreich also appear. As such, our odds charts are currently predicting that “Oppenheimer” will land not one acting bid, not two acting bids, but three nominations for its cast. Here’s the rundown.
Best Actor — Cillian Murphy
This is the obvious one and for good reason.

This article contains spoilers for "Oppenheimer."
Part of what makes "Oppenheimer" such a rewarding experience is the chance to see Robert Downey Jr. act again. His 13-year run as Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe ultimately subsumed his career during the 2010s — and his first post-Marvel project was the ill-advised "Dolittle." With this career trajectory, it's easy to forget Downey isn't just a charismatic movie star: he's a really skilled actor, one who hasn't gotten to stretch his muscles in over a decade. "Oppenheimer," his first and hopefully not last movie with Christopher Nolan, finally grants him that opportunity.
Downey plays Lewis Strauss, the man who destroyed Oppenheimer's reputation. From the beginning there's contempt in their relationship; Oppenheimer mispronouncing Strauss' name is the first of indignities that the latter takes too personally. To reflect how their lives intersected, the film employs two framing devices. One, Oppenheimer's security clearance hearing...

To reflect how their lives intersected, the film employs two framing devices. One, Oppenheimer's security clearance hearing...

The life of American theoretical physicist J Robert Oppenheimer, the most respected leader of the Manhattan Project, which developed the atomic bomb during World War II, has been the subject of a number of biographies, but history hasn’t been kind to him. His story still needs to be chronicled. Oppenheimer is an epic biographical drama written and directed by Christopher Nolan.
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J Sherwin, the film chronicles the life of J Robert Oppenheimer, a theoretical physicist who was pivotal in developing the first nuclear weapons as part of the Manhattan Project, and thereby ushering in the Atomic Age. ‘Oppenheimer’ gives us a fatalistic view of nuclear weapons, and the trauma that they entail.
During World War II, Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves Jr. appoints Oppenheimer, along with a team of scientists, to work on the top-secret Manhattan Project.

There are some films where words cannot accurately describe the experience. This is a film with constant dialogues, on different themes, with different characters that keep appearing. Just like life is, with constant changes, constant relationships, and constant experiences. An astonishing and relentless film, it weaves through different points in time, filmed alternatively in color and contrasted with stunning black and white imagery. The only place to watch this film is on the biggest screen possible as it is filled with sweeping cinematography, career-defining performances, and surreal visual effects which will blow you off your seats and leave you speechless as the credits begin to roll.
Christopher Nolan tackles one of the most divisive scientific achievements in human history–the invention of the atomic bomb–through the lens of its chief creator, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and the resulting fallout coupled with the emotional ordeal this achievement had on Oppenheimer himself.

[Editor’s Note: This post contains minor spoilers for “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.”]
In April 2022, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” film, an adaptation of the iconic Mattel doll line starring Margot Robbie, set its release date for July 21, 2023. The date, as many immediately pointed out, was already the release date of Christopher Nolan’s next film, “Oppenheimer,” a biopic of the creator of the atomic bomb, featuring Cillian Murphy in the title role.
Both films had already been linked together for some (specifically the very online); during the early months of 2022, when they were finalizing casting, it became a Twitter joke that pretty much every performer in Hollywood was in one of the two film’s gigantic ensembles. Add in some real-world drama involving Nolan’s messy split from Warner Bros., the same company releasing “Barbie,” and soon “Barbenheimer” was born: a jokey rivalry between the two very different features, which eventually evolved into a viral trend of people booking themselves...

The ticking time bomb is one of cinema’s most familiar tropes. Ten seconds until detonation, a big red button, our heroes fate precariously in the balance. All of this features in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, except this is real. Usually the hero has to save the day, to stop the aforementioned bomb from untold damage, more often than not preventing the explosion with just a single second to go. But in this instance, the hero of the piece created the damn thing.
J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) was a visionary; a theoretical physicist who wasn’t restricted in conventional thinking, with a keen fascination into quantum mechanics. His progressive, unorthodox teaching methods caught the attention of the army, as Leslie Groves (Matt Damon) headhunted Oppenheimer to oversee the Los Alamos project, with the intention of creating and building an atomic bomb, before the Nazis do, in a bid to...

Both a probing character study and a sweeping account of history, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is a brainy, brawny thriller about the man who led the Manhattan Project to build the bomb that ended World War II. To dispense with the inevitable weapon of mass destruction metaphors, it’s more slow-burn than explosive. But perhaps the most surprising element of this audacious epic is that the scramble for atomic armament ends up being secondary to the scathing depiction of political gamesmanship, as one of the most brilliant scientific minds of the 20th century is vilified for voicing learned opinions that go against America’s arms-race thinking.
Chiseling Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherman’s whopping, definitive biography, American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, from 700-plus pages into a three-hour screenplay, Nolan hasn’t entirely streamlined the dense plot.

The very online showdown between Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” all started with a date: July 21.
It’s not uncommon for studios to counterprogram films in different genres on a big weekend, but the stark differences between an intense, serious-minded picture about the man who oversaw the development of the atomic bomb and a lighthearted, candy-coloured anthropomorphizing of a childhood doll quickly became the stuff of viral fodder.
There’s even some disagreement over whether it’s “Barbieheimer” or “Barbenheimer” or “Boppenheimer” or yet another tortured portmanteau — a phenomenon on which the AP Stylebook has yet to offer guidance, but for the purposes of this article will be “Barbenheimer.”
It didn’t hurt that both Nolan and Gerwig have very passionate and very online fandoms eager to join in. Never mind that many of those fans overlap — the memes, allegiances, and T-shirts were just too fun.

A brand new trailer for “Oppenheimer,” the upcoming film from director Christopher Nolan, was released Monday by Universal Pictures in anticipation of the feature’s July debut.
Set to a dramatic score from Ludwig Göransson, the newly-dropped teaser offers closer looks at the key players of the Manhattan Project, as portrayed by a star-studded cast including Cillian Murphy, Florence Pugh, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Leslie Groves Jr. and Tom Conti, who appears briefly as a somber looking Albert Einstein.
“Oppenheimer” centers around the legacy of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Murphy), who is credited as the inventor of the atomic bomb. Based on the biographical novel “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer,” the film follows the physicist as he works alongside a team of government scientists to develop nuclear weapons in the early 1940s.

Richard Loncraine’s The Haunting of Julia is something of a film maudit. Adapted from Peter Straub’s first horror novel, the film was shot around London in late 1976 under the title Full Circle (as its title card still reads), then made the festival rounds throughout 1977, before barely being released in England in 1978. It belatedly turned up in the U.S. three years later, boasting the more genre-friendly title The Haunting of Julia but still failed to find much of an audience. A lot of this has to do with some significant stylistic differences between Loncraine’s film and the wave of slasher movies that dominated the horror market at the time: Above all, its unhurried pace and relatively restrained depiction of violence stand in stark contrast to the slasher’s relentless plotting and unfettered brutality.

With a long and successful career spanning genres, Mia Farrow may not be considered a horror icon, but she’s certainly deserving of the title in terms of quality over quantity. The two genre efforts in which she starred are exemplary horror movies of their respective eras; while Rosemary’s Baby has been widely lauded since its release in 1968 (Roman Polanski’s personal life controversies notwithstanding), The Haunting of Julia – known internationally as Full Circle – is a hidden gem ripe for rediscovery.
Based on Peter Straub’s 1975 novel Julia, the 1977 British film is directed by Richard Loncraine and written by Dave Humphries (Quadrophenia), with Xtro filmmaker Harry Bromley Davenport receiving a “based on an adaptation by” credit. Although ostensibly a haunted house tale, its ambiguity also allows it to be viewed as a dramatic character study. Scream Factory shines a well-needed light on the atmospheric chiller with a new 4K Uhd + Blu-ray edition.

Ahead of Horror Channel’s UK TV Premiere of Peripheral, director Paul Hyett talks about directorial ambitions, twisted technology, and why aliens aren’t interested in us.
How did you become attached to Peripheral?
The producer Craig Touhy and I had been friends for a while and we’d nearly done another movie together. He’d liked the claustrophobia and tension of The Seasoning House so we met up to discuss Peripheral. When he pitched it to me, very much a low budget, contained movie, in one apartment. I must say I was a little hesitant. I wanted to broaden my directing and do bigger scope. Craig persuaded me to at least read it. I did and loved the script. The story, the character of Bobbi, of this writer blocked, being forced to adjust to what is wanted of her, and having to succumb to a technology that ultimately fucks...

Herbert F. Solow, a longtime television executive who pitched the original “Star Trek” series to NBC while he was at Desilu Studios, along with “Mission Impossible” and “Mannix,” died on Thursday, his wife, Dr. Harrison Solow, confirmed. He was 89.
In later years, he and his wife wrote several books on the “Star Trek” series, including “Inside Star Trek: The Real Story” and “The Star Trek Sketchbook.”
Solow was brought in by Lucille Ball after her divorce from Desi Arnaz to help revive Desilu Studios, where he helped develop and sell “Star Trek” to NBC — after CBS originally turned it down because it already had “Lost in Space” — as well as “Mission: Impossible” and “Mannix” to CBS.
Solow helped guide “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry on their pitch to the network, and continued to champion the series until Ball herself got behind the effort.

Five years after he had won Best Director at the 1978 Cannes Film Festival for “Empire of Passion” Japanese auteur Nagisa Oshima would return to the cinema with “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence”, a film based on the works “The Seed and the Sower” and “The Night of the New Moon” by Sir Laurens van der Post. In his books, he reflects on his time as a prisoner of war after he had been captured by Japanese forces in 1942, and in Oshima’s, film the character played by Tom Conti bears much resemblance to the author, especially because of his knowledge of the Japanese language and culture. Apart from Conti, Oshima managed to assemble quite an interesting cast for this war drama consisting of musicians David Bowie and Ryuichi Sakamoto along with Takeshi Kitano as Sergeant Hara.

Jenkins’ former clients included Tom Conti, Gemma Whelan and Richard Glover.
London-based talent agent Janie Jenkins has passed away following a sudden, acute heart attack at her home on October 29.
Jenkins was born in Milton, Cambridge in 1963 to Judy and Terry Jenkins and entered the industry in the costume department at The Cockpit Theatre, Marylebone.
She started working as a talent agent with Mike Leigh Associates, championing writer-performers; sketch comedians; up-and-coming actors and established talent.
In 2009 she moved, with a clutch of clients, to Pbj Management. Here, assisted by Marina Campbell-Gray, she strengthened the acting department, which included Tom Conti,...

"Finish the book, Bobbi!" Amp International has unveiled a teaser trailer for a wickedly weird sci-fi horror thriller titled Peripheral, from director Paul Hyett. The film is about a young writer named Bobbi Johnson struggling to finish her second novel. She installs an artificial intelligence into her home to help her finish, but it takes over her mind and manipulates her work to suit its own nefarious ends. Hannah Arterton stars as Bobbi, along with a smaller cast including Tom Conti, Rosie Day, Jenny Seagrove, and Elliot James Langridge. I honestly don't even know what to make of this - there's so many weird things happening and so much funky imagery in this trailer it's hard to make sense of it. But I guess I will admit: I am curious about this. A little bit, perhaps? Have a look for yourself. Here's the first teaser trailer (+ poster) for Paul Hyett's Peripheral,...

The esteemed Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto was back in the news over the summer, when the New York Times reported that he was so irked by the song selection at a favorite Manhattan restaurant, he politely wrote to the chef and offered to take charge of the playlist. Something about the story felt typically Sakamoto: the confidence, the sensitivity, the unswerving belief that music demands to be taken a little more seriously.
The 66-year-old is being honored as Asian Filmmaker of the Year at Busan, in recognition of a soundtrack oeuvre stretching back to Nagisa Oshima’s “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence” in 1983. He’s the first composer to receive the prize, and it’s hard to argue with the choice. Other Asian film composers may have amassed larger bodies of work, but few can rival Sakamoto’s international clout, cultivated over a career that’s embraced pop stardom, avant-garde experimentation and political activism.

It’s rare for a sequel to outshine its predecessor, but Paddington 2 succeeds admirably. The loveable bear with the blue duffel coat and red hat returns to the big screen in a funny, charming, and occasionally emotional adventure that gives audiences more of what they loved in the first installment…and then some. 2018 has begun well.
Paddington 2 opens with a brief prologue showing baby Paddington rescued by his bear Uncle Pastuzo (Michael Gambon) and bear Aunt Lucy (Imelda Staunton), who permanently postpone a visit to London to take care of him. Jump ahead a couple of decades and Paddington (voiced by Ben Whishaw) is now a permanent resident of Windsor Gardens in London with his adopted family, the Browns (Sally Hawkins, Hugh Bonneville, Julie Walters, Madeleine Harris, and Samuel Joslin – all returning from the 2014 original). The bear is searching for the perfect gift for cherished Aunt Lucy’s...
