“The primary thing when I talked to Donald Glover at the start of this was, he said that the show is about trust,” reveals”Mr. and Mrs. Smith” composer David Fleming. For our recent webchat he adds, “trusting your professional partner, trusting your romantic partner; it really was trying to tell those two stories, of their relationship as spies and their blossoming romance as one story and the music had to serve both purposes.” We talked with Fleming as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2024 awards contenders. Amazon Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” is taking this Emmy race seriously.
With stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine leading the charge, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” which draws inspiration from the 2005 movie featuring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, is set to compete in the drama categories at this year’s awards ceremony.
Crafted by Glover and Francesca Sloane, the show’s debut season stretches across eight episodes, centering on John and Jane Smith, secret agents who pose as a married couple while working for a shadowy corporation. Its blend of comedy and drama offered the potential to categorize it in either genre for awards consideration.

The Oscars added a category for casting, and it’s about damn time.
The announcement of the new category, slated to debut in 2026 for films released in 2025, has been warmly received on social media by awards aficionados. Many consider it a long-overdue acknowledgment, especially since the Casting Directors Branch was established over a decade ago in 2013. However, this raises questions about future categories and if, when, and how they will be accommodated in an awards ceremony that aims to stay under three hours.
It’s important to note that the Academy has yet to commit to featuring the best achievement in casting award during the televised ceremony. Details regarding eligibility and voting for the inaugural award will be disclosed in April 2025, alongside the complete rules for the 98th Academy Awards. The presentation method will be determined by the Academy’s Board of Governors and its administrative leadership at a later date.

Pedro Pascal almost joined the HBO family years prior to “The Last of Us.”
Before Pascal’s TV rise with “Narcos,” “Game of Thrones,” “The Mandalorian,” and most recently, “The Last of Us,” Pascal was approached to join the ensemble cast of the 2014 show “Looking” that focused on a friend group of gay men in San Francisco.
Casting director Carmen Cuba told GQ in a 10-year anniversary piece that Pascal was considered for a role; Cuba later cast him in “Narcos” after meeting.
“Especially in TV, you meet a lot of people,” Cuba said. “Pedro Pascal was someone we met [for a role on ‘Looking’] and from that, I put him on ‘Narcos.’ The thing with Pedro, it was like he was testing on a million things. So many of these things, as you know in casting, it’s just like scheduling. Does scheduling work? Does the group? Because in this, we were really casting a group.

Karina Manashil, the executive producer of Netflix’s animated film “Entergalactic,” says that the project was not initially intended by Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi to be animated. “In terms of creating a holistic visual interpretation of his music, there wasn’t really an opportunity to do that. So ‘Entergalactic’ was really birthed out of this idea of how do we create a holistic experience,” Mahashil tells Gold Derby during our recent Meet the Experts: TV Animation panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).

There is nothing on television quite like Swarm. This ultraviolent fever dream of a series, from the Atlanta team of Donald Glover and Janine Nabers, tells the tale of a tormented young Black woman, Dre (Dominique Fishback, outstanding), who idolizes Ni’Jah, the world’s biggest pop star — or at least the one with the most militant fanbase, who call themselves the Swarm and drown out any and all online detractors with bee emojis. If this all sounds familiar, it should: the series is directly inspired by Beyoncé and her Beyhive,...

The cast and creatives behind Swarm, a mesmerizing TV series that premiered at SXSW ahead of its March 17 debut on Prime Video, have taken pains to avoid the elephant in the room: Beyoncé. It’s an odd predicament given that the form-breaking show is absolutely littered with references to the music icon. Ni’Jah is a pop star hailing from Houston, Texas. Her recent album is complemented by Afrofuturist visuals, and she has a talented younger sister who attacked her cheating spouse in an elevator. Dre (Dominique Fishback) is Ni’Jah’s most hardcore fan.

The Casting Society of America’s annual Artios Awards, which recognize superior achievement in the casting of film, TV and theater projects, has announced the nominees for its film categories, which range from 200 million blockbusters to low-and-micro budget titles.
Anticipated Oscar darlings such as “Elvis,” “Tar,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “The Fabelmans” and “Glass Onion” are present along with juggernauts “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “The Batman.” “Top Gun: Maverick” is strangely absent.
But the real surprises are the smaller titles that have gotten little awards attention in races so far such as “Bros,” “Emily the Criminal,” “Armageddon Time” and “Spoiler Alert,” along with streaming titles such as AppleTV+’s “Cha Cha Real Smooth” and “Causeway,” Netflix’s “Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical” and “White Noise,” and Amazon’s “Emergency” and “Catherine Called Birdy” among them.

For Variety’s latest issue, we asked the Duffer Brothers to write a tribute to Maya Hawke, one of 53 people to make our New Power of New York list. For the full list, click here.
“A young Janeane Garofalo.” That’s how we originally pitched the character of Robin in “Stranger Things.” But that’s about all we had. Well, that and two short scenes where Robin hands out ice cream with Steve Harrington. We just didn’t really know who Robin was — what made her interesting, what made her stand out. That is, until our casting director, Carmen Cuba, gave us the three-word answer: “She’s Maya Hawke.” “Who?” we asked. “Just … trust me,” she said.
Fast-forward six months, and we’re shooting in that ice cream shop, and Maya pulls us aside and asks, “So … are you guys basically just writing … me?” We had to laugh, because the answer was,...

How does one prepare to play a pop icon? According to Evan Rachel Wood, it’s all about the facts.
Wood plays Madonna in the Roku Channel’s “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” opposite Daniel Radcliffe as the parody singer himself. The film premiered at 2022 TIFF, where Wood exclusively told IndieWire that meeting Madonna over the years helped prepare her for the role.
“I love Madonna,” the “Rising Phoenix” activist said. “I’ve met her before. We’ve been very friendly. So I think we’re cool. I’m hoping we’re cool.”
She added, “The good news is nothing in this movie actually happened, so I’m a little safe there.”
Plus, Wood is doubtful that Madonna will address her portrayal of her short-lived romance with Weird Al, who co-wrote and produced the film. “I don’t think she’s going to respond at all,” Wood said. “She has...

“Stranger Things” is nominated for 13 Emmy Awards including Best Drama Series, so we convened a special roundtable panel with seven nominees behind Netflix’s sci-fi/horror series: casting director Carmen Cuba, music supervisor Nora Felder, prosthetics designer Barrie Gower, hair department head Sarah Hindsgaul, stunt coordinator Hiro Koda, production designer Chris Trujillo and editor Dean Zimmerman.

The series takes place in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, where a portal is opened into a parallel world known as the Upside Down. And in season four the creature who emerged from that dark dimension was Vecna, who psychically cursed his victims. He’s played by Jamie Campbell Bower, and casting him was “challenging for multiple reasons,” remembers Cuba. The actors on Stranger Things are household names now—but it all started with a first audition. When the Netflix sci-fi series started in 2016, nobody had ever heard of Hawkins, Indiana and the Upside Down sounded like a pineapple dessert. For casting director Carmen Cuba, the process of finding the right actors to inhibit the roles was a monumental task. Cuba and series creators Matt and Ross Duffer knew that the show needed some heavyweight child actors, so she knew approaching unknowns wasn't going to cut it. "This was not going to be that. It was going to be such hard work. It was going to be months on end and very specific dialogue," Cuba revealed to Vanity Fair. "That...

Madonna is “Hung Up” on perfecting the script to her life story.
The multi-hyphenate pop icon is writing and directing her own musical biopic from a script co-written with Erin Cressida Wilson. Yet the screenplay editing process has been no “Holiday.”
“I have a very long script that is really hard for me to make shorter,” Madonna told Variety. “I’ve been whittling away at it, but it’s like hacking off my limbs.”
Julia Garner was offered the role of playing the “Like a Virgin” singer, with Julia Fox being rumored to portray Madonna’s longtime friend and fellow actress Debi Mazar.
Madonna continued, “I’ve had an extraordinary life, I must make an extraordinary film. It was also a preemptive strike because a lot of people were trying to make movies about me. Mostly misogynistic men. So I put my foot in the door and said, ‘No one...

Julia Garner is certainly one lucky star.
Madonna has offered the “Inventing Anna” and “Ozark” actress the lead role in her own biopic. Garner is rumored to have endured a “grueling” audition process to beat out Florence Pugh, “Euphoria” star Alexa Demie, Odessa Young, and Emma Laird, who were also on the shortlist to portray Madonna.
The Grammy winner and pop icon Madonna is directing her own life story for the big screen, from a script co-written with Erin Cressida Wilson. Amy Pascal is currently on board to produce the Universal Pictures musical biopic.
Garner’s team is said to be reviewing the offer and is considering accepting. Universal confirmed to IndieWire that the film remains in active development but that Garner is the choice to play the role.

A Twitter exchange between actress Bethany Anne Lind and Tara Feldstein, the latter a principal at powerful southeastern U.S. company Feldstein|Paris Casting, has ignited a heated discussion on social media, releasing years of pent-up anger and frustration among actors in the region.
Some of the rancor has been addressed at Feldstein|Paris, accusing them for not negotiating fair pay for Southeast-based talent, but many of the comments also focused on the inequality built into the current Hollywood system that allows for actors in places like Atlanta to be paid significantly less than their counterparts with similar bodies of work based in Los Angeles or New York, and to never be offered more than the bare minimum “scale” rate regardless of experience.
Following backlash, Feldstein took her Twitter feed private, but the situation, which flared up early last week, continued to escalate to a point where Feldstein|Paris principal...

The time-travel premise of the new Netflix movie “The Adam Project” concerns a man traveling back in time and interacting with his younger self. But when casting Ryan Reynolds as the lead of the film, the prospect of finding a pre-teen performer capable of, frankly, keeping up with Reynolds and nailing his specific mannerisms and inflection seemed nearly impossible.
What Reynolds and director Shawn Levy didn’t know, however, was that in casting newcomer Walker Scobell to play the younger version of Reynolds’ character Adam Reed, they had hired one of the world’s biggest “Deadpool” fans.
“In the same way that you can’t direct someone to be funny, you also can’t direct someone to be more Ryan Reynolds-ish,” Levy candidly told TheWrap in a recent interview. “Here’s where I lucked out: I hired Carmen Cuba, who cast ‘Stranger Things’ for us, so I knew that I...

“The Adam Project” is not the first time-travel movie to tell the audience they shouldn’t bother trying to work out the rules of the science behind the premise, but it is unabashed in its focus on emotion over the cerebral nature of the sci-fi plot. And as director Shawn Levy told TheWrap in a recent interview, that was the entire reason he wanted to make the movie in the first place.
A version of “The Adam Project” has been in development for nearly a decade, with Tom Cruise at one point attached to star in the story of a man who travels back in time and teams up with his childhood self and his since-departed father to save the future. When asked what finally shifted this project out of development hell with Levy at the helm and Ryan Reynolds in the starring role, the filmmaker was candid.

Madonna is looking for one “Lucky Star” to play her in an upcoming biopic.
The Grammy winner is set to direct her own life story for the big screen, from a script co-written with Erin Cressida Wilson. The Alliance of Women Film Journalists has announced the 2021 AWFJ Eda winners for its 15th season. This year’s most-nominated film, “The Power of the Dog,” swept the awards with wins in 11 out of 25 categories including best film, best director for Jane Campion, supporting actress for Kirsten Dunst and adapted screenplay.
“Although our beloved film industry was plagued by the pandemic, 2021 turned out to be a rather magnificent year for movies — especially for films made by and about women,” said AWFJ president Jennifer Merin. “We at the Alliance of Women Film Journalists are delighted to note that last year’s crop of brilliant femme-helmed and femme-centric films are getting the awards recognition they deserve — as shown in our list of Eda Award winners, and in films and talent on our roster of nominees, as well as in awards presented by other film critics’ groups.”

Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” led the nominations from the Alliance of Women Film Journalists (AWFJ). The emotional western was nominated for best film, director, adapted screenplay, and in acting and craft categories.

Rebecca Hall’s “Passing” was the second most-nominated film, landing nine nominations, and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Lost Daughter” scored eight.

Spoilers Ahead! As the second part of my Fear Street special feature, I had the opportunity to catch up with Julia Rehwald, who played Kate in 1994 and Lizzie in 1666. It's not often that actors have the opportunity to continue in a franchise even after their character dies, but that's exactly what Julia Rehwald did and we discussed all the hard work that went into Kate's very memorable death scene, along with preparing for the roles, and her love of horror movies:
How did you first get involved with the Fear Street trilogy and what made you want to take on the role of Kate?
Julia Rehwald: I first found out about the project through Leigh Janiak, because I was involved with a pilot that she directed before she did Fear Street. She ended up having me send a self-tape audition to submit for the roles of Kate and Lizzie. I...

Indie moviemaker Amy Seimetz pulls off the ultimate heist in “No Sudden Move.”
Though relatively unknown to most viewers, Seimetz slyly steals the star-studded film out from under the likes of Don Cheadle and Benicio del Toro with her portrayal of a housewife who gets caught up in a dangerous plot to steal a priceless document.
The Steven Soderbergh film is now streaming on HBO Max, and Seimetz is nothing short of a revelation. Her character, Mary Wertz, is kidnapped by a group of small-time crooks who want to force her philandering, auto executive husband (David Harbour) to break into his office safe in order to give them some trade secrets. Just as she finds herself and her children staring down the barrel of a gun, Mary also discovers that her marriage is a sham when one of the robbers casually notes that her husband is sleeping with his boss’ secretary.
