U.S. producer E. Bennett Walsh, who has made films including Mortal Kombat, Meg 2: The Trench and The Kite Runner across the Apac region, says he’s got his eye on Japan and Korea as the next hot destinations for footloose Hollywood productions.
“I think the opportunity in Asia is in Korea and Japan,” said Walsh. “Tokyo Vice recently had a great experience in Japan and there are more opportunities for productions like that. Some pieces of the Marvel movies have filmed in Korea, but that was just scratching the surface.”
Japan recently introduced an official production incentive to fund up to one half of the qualifying Japanese spend of international productions, while Korea has been operating incentives for several years. In addition, Japan’s largest studio Toho recently formed a joint venture production services outfit with established Japan-based producer Georgina Pope.

German filmmaker Wim Wenders is to be the president of the jury that decides the main competition prizes later this year at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
Wenders has frequent connections with the Japanese capital and last year shot his “Perfect Days” film in the city. The film recently appeared in competition in Cannes and earned Yakusho Koji the best actor prize.
The Tokyo festival confirmed plans to host a celebration of Japanese director Ozu Yasujiro, who was born 120 years ago and died exactly 60 years later. Wenders previously shot 1985 documentary “Tokyo-ga” as a tribute to Ozu.
“For this festival happening 60 years after the death and therefore 120 years after Ozu’s birthday, my declared master, makes the occasion very special to me,” said Wenders.

Adeline Rudolph, best known for her role in Netflix’s “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” is set to play Kitana in New Line’s upcoming “Mortal Kombat 2,” according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
The upcoming film is a “Sabrina” reunion of sorts as Rudolph will be joining Tati Gabrielle, her costar on the Netflix series, in the sequel to the 2021 “Mortal Kombat” film, based on the blockbuster video game franchise.
Rudolph joins Karl Urban who will play Johnny Cage, which TheWrap previously reported. Gabrielle is set to play Jade.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina actress Adeline Rudolph is going from Riverdale to Outworld for New Line‘s Mortal Kombat 2. Rudolph is the second Chilling Adventures cast member to sign on for the Mortal Kombat sequel after Tati Gabrielle announced she’s in talks to play Jade in the follow-up to director Simon McQuoid’s 2021 smash. McQuoid directs the sequel, featuring Karl Urban as the fast-talking Hollywood misfit fighter Johnny Cage.
Written by Jeremy Slater, Mortal Kombat 2 continues the story established in the McQuoid reboot, focusing on an eclectic group of fighters pulled into a contest of champions for the fate of Earthrealm against the sinister forces of Outworld. New Line’s Mortal Kombat was released at the onset of the pandemic in theaters and on HBO Max, becoming one of the streaming platform’s most significant hits.
Rudolph plays Kitana in the sequel, my favorite character from the famed fighting game franchise.

“Mortal Kombat 2” will follow the example of its 2021 hit predecessor and film in Australia. But production will relocate to Gold Coast, Queensland, from Adelaide in South Australia.
The New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures title is based on the iconic video game by Ed Boon and John Tobias. Filming will begin at Village Roadshow Studios from June.
“Mortal Kombat 2” is written by Jeremy Slater and will again be directed by Australian Simon McQuoid. The film will be produced by James Wan’s Atomic Monster and Todd Garner’s Broken Road Productions.
The production was lured by the Queensland Government via Screen Queensland’s Production Attraction Strategy. It will also be eligible for the Australian federal government’s recently-revised offset scheme.
“With an estimated local spend of more than $68 million, Mortal Kombat 2 is a heavy hitter for the state’s economy, creating at least 560 jobs for Queensland cast and crew,...

Big screen shark attack sequel Meg 2: The Trench will be swimming into theaters on August 4, 2023, and today the film has received its official rating from the MPA.
Like the previous film, Meg 2: The Trench has been rated “PG-13” for…
“Action/violence, some bloody images, language and brief suggestive material.”
Last week’s bloody official trailer suggested that Meg 2 could potentially be going a bit harder on the violence than the disappointing 2018 movie, but there was realistically no way Warner Bros. was going to risk potentially cutting into the sequel’s box office profits with an “R” rating.
The good news? As the trailer suggests, there are a lot of gruesome ways a massive shark can eat people – and other monsters, including a T-Rex this time around! – while still sticking to that PG-13 rating. After all, the three Megalodon sharks in the upcoming movie are so large that they’re literally swallowing humans whole,...

Here’s hoping the most hilarious moments aren’t in the over-the-top, action-packed trailer for Warner Bros. Pictures’ Meg 2: The Trench. The stunts have a Fast and Furious feel – they are implausible yet impressive – and the plot surpasses the first film, The Meg (2018), in terms of megalodon encounters. In the original movie, Jason Statham battled a colossal sea creature, but in the sequel, there are not one, not two, but three Megs for Statham and crew to take on.
Statham’s joined in this wild adventure by Wu Jing, Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Skyler Samuels, and Cliff Curtis.
The original The Meg was directed by Jon Turteltaub, but it’s Ben Wheatley who takes over the reins for the sequel. The Meg‘s Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, and Dean Georgaris wrote the screenplay, based on Steve Alten’s novel The Trench. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Belle Avery serve as producers,...

The previous film was a new adaptation of the popular video game franchise that offered a grittier, more violent take on the material than the 1990s films. It was released in April of 2021 both in theaters and on HBO Max, and was an early pandemic hit for distributor Warner Bros., ranking as one of the top feature titles on HBO Max since the streaming service debuted.
Jeremy Slater is writing the screenplay for the sequel, and news of his involvement was first revealed in January.
“Mortal Kombat” marked McQuoid’s feature directorial debut, and the film ended with a clear path forward for the franchise as the titular challenge does not occur within the events of the first movie. A post-credits scene also teased the inclusion...

Exclusive: After the most recent Mortal Kombat pic overachieved at box office, New Line is ready to get back in to the arena on a sequel. Sources tell Deadline that Simon McQuoid is set to return as director for the follow-up to the 2021 action-adventure hit.
Mortal Kombat was McQuoid’s feature directorial debut and was released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max during the pandemic in April 2021.

An 80-foot prehistoric shark is returning to the big screen with “The Meg 2,” and Warner Bros. has hired “Rebecca” filmmaker Ben Wheatley to direct.
Development of the sequel comes two years after “The Meg” took in an impressive $530 million worldwide. That film revolved around the monstrous megalodon emerging from the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the world’s oceans in the Pacific.
Jason Statham is expected to reprise his role from the first movie, in which he portrayed a U.S. Navy diver sent to rescue other divers from a shark attack. Statham was a world-class diver on the British Commonwealth team before becoming an actor.

Joe Taslim has signed on to star as Sub-Zero in “Mortal Kombat” for New Line Cinema.
Taslim broke out in the 2011 Indonesian actioner “The Raid.” He appeared in “Fast and Furious 6” and “The Night Comes for Us,” and currently stars in the Cinemax series “Warrior.”

Indonesian actor/martial artist Joe Taslim has been cast as Sub-Zero in New Line Cinema’s epic-action film “Mortal Kombat.” The film is set to shoot in South Australia later this year, an individual with knowledge of the project tells TheWrap.
The film, produced by “Aquaman” director James Wan and based on the hugely successful video game franchise, will hit theaters on March 5, 2021. Simon McQuoid will direct in his feature directorial debut. The current screenplay is by Greg Russo.
Developed by Midway Games in 1992, “Mortal Kombat” is a series of horror/fantasy-themed fighting games in which a group of martial artists (and a God) are assembled to compete in a series of fights against demonic opponents in order to prevent the destruction of earth. “Mortal Kombat 11,” the franchise’s latest installment, was released in April and has become the most successful launch in franchise history.
The first game was notorious for its depiction of extreme gore, especially via finishing moves called “fatalities,” in which fights were ended by actions like ripping a beating heart from an opponent’s chest or pulling their head and spine from their body, among others.
The fatality feature was expanded upon in subsequent games escalating both the gore and the black comedy, and fatalities remain a staple of the series. Since 1992, 24 games have been released.
“Mortal Kombat” will be the franchise’s third live-action adaptation, following 1995’s “Mortal Kombat” and “Mortal Kombat: Annihilation” in 1997. The franchise also spawned a direct-to-video animated prequel, “Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins,” in 1995, as well as a stage show.
