My guest this week is Rebecca Ferguson. She recently reprised her role of Lady Jessica with Dune: Part Two, and plays the lead role in Silo, Apple TV+’s dystopian series about a community gone underground following an apocalyptic event. Ferguson stars as Juliette, an engineer-reluctantly-turned-sheriff, who uncovers alarming secrets while investigating a mysterious death.
Here, Ferguson describes the “intoxicating” experience of making the show, working with showrunner Graham Yost and her EP role, plus the elaborate and stunning sets and VFX work that went into it all.
As for Season 2 plans, how close will the show adhere to Hugh Howey’s original book series, on which it’s based? “I couldn’t possibly say,” Ferguson laughs, “but can you guess? No, don’t guess!”
Ferguson also addresses whether her character of Ilsa Faust would ever make a posthumous appearance in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two…

“I was blown away from the first script I read,” admits triple threat Oscar, Emmy and Grammy winner Common about his initial reactions to the labyrinthine plot and setting of sci-fi drama “Silo.” For our recent webchat he adds, “I was like, ‘thank you God that they are even considering me for this role.’ And when I got to meet with Graham Yost and then eventually got the call that I was chosen for the role of Sims, I was like really in gratitude. This is one of the best characters that I will ever play,” he says, explaining further that “the crew we have, from hair and makeup to our camera crew to obviously set design, costume design. Man, I was like, ‘I am working with excellence!’ I don’t think I’ve been on a on a film or TV project where I looked everywhere, and it was just excellent,...

“This is not just a film that I’ve created a character and done and left. It’s a show that I am so involved in that I love it beyond anything and everyone,” says Rebecca Ferguson at Deadline’s Contenders TV panel for Silo. “It’s really thought-provoking, philosophical, psychological.”
She added: “We had one day where we weren’t really figuring out a scene … and we just stopped the shooting for 15 minutes … and we just talked it through, because we’re not rushing anything. This is the essence of this show. We get to the core of what we’re doing and why we’re doing it, in the most phenomenal setting.”

With Dune: Part Two’s success, Rebecca Ferguson’s filmography—which features a lead in a highly regarded sci-fi series currently airing on Apple TV+—has garnered more recognition. Yes, we are discussing Graham Yost’s science fiction dystopian drama TV series Silo. The Swedish actress expertly donned the role of Juliette Nichols, who is entangled in a web of mystery spanning the past and present.
Having said that, she obviously had to put in a lot of work to deliver a strong and complex performance. If you were to find out that she had “studied trauma” in order to assume this role, how would you respond? Well, she actually did this.
Critics gave the series favorable reviews, praising Ferguson’s performance and the production design. However, the actress has not gotten the recognition that her stellar performance so richly merits.

Walton Goggins appeared in several roles when he was in Georgia before he starred in the FX series The Shield, which was aired from 2002 to 2008. His next role was that of Boyd Crowder in the neo-Western crime drama TV series Justified, which aired for six seasons between 2010 and 2015.

Masters of the Air is the newest tribute to World War II veterans from Spielberg and Hanks. All of their projects on the subject, including Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers and The Pacific, concentrate on different aspects of the Great War and make for good viewing companion pieces. As the new series follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany, the review from our own Alex Maidy spoke highly of the show. He stated, “It is unlikely that any series will equal the acclaim that Band of Brothers achieved. Still, the blend of feature film directors and a cast of actors more than up to the task, Masters of the Air is a powerful companion to that HBO series and ranks slightly higher than The Pacific.

“Masters of the Air” launched with more viewers in its opening weekend than any Apple TV+ series ever has in its first season, according to the streamer. Though an exact number of viewers was not made available, that puts the epic war miniseries launch above other high-profile original titles like “Hijack,” “The Morning Show” and “Severance.”
Remarkably, following the premiere of “Masters of the Air,” viewership across all of Apple TV+ climbed by 65% worldwide when compared to the previous seven-day period. The streamer also maintained double-digit growth across more than 100 territories.
“Masters of the Air” is currently debuting new episodes, with its sixth installment premiering on Friday, Feb. 23. The finale will bow on the streamer on March 15.

Variety’s annual Showrunners Dinner presented by A+E Studios on Thursday night gathered writers recognized on the publication’s annual TV Producers Impact List, as well as several of this year’s Emmy nominees. In addition, megaproducer Chuck Lorre was honored with Variety’s first Norman Lear Award.
Held at Merois, on the rooftop of the Pendry West Hollywood, the Variety Showrunners Dinner included a very funny acceptance speech by Lorre, who pointed out some of the similarities — but more humorously, the differences — between the two icons.
“I think everyone here understands the enormity and significance of Norman Lear’s body of work,” Lorre began. “So in accepting this award, I don’t think it’s false modesty to take a moment and focus on the very large differences between his career and my own. For starters, Norman Lear began his career writing for Hollywood legends like Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.

Apple TV+ taketh away, but Apple TV+ also giveth in spades. It's been over a decade since production on the war epic "Masters of the Air" began, but the Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks-executive produced limited series follow-up to "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific" is almost here. Originally developed as a project for HBO, "Masters of the Air" jumped over to Apple TV+ in 2019 as the first in-house production for the studio. Of course, filming a sweeping WWII drama with explosions and flight scenes will take a bit more time than, say, a relatable dramedy like "Shrinking" (not to mention the necessary delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic), but the newest trailer for the highly-anticipated series signals that our wait has not been in vain.

The first Floodlight Summit will take place from Nov. 30 to Dec. 3 in Cartagena, Colombia. The event, curated and organized by Philippa Kowarsky and Alesia Weston, is a one-of-a-kind pilot for a long-term alliance that seeks to connect investigative journalists and their reporting with the film and television industry.
The event has been established by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (Occrp) and the Gabo Foundation as part of both institutions’ public interest focus. It will attempt “to nurture a symbiotic relationship between investigative journalism and fiction filmmaking that will result in storytelling that entertains, educates, and inspires,” according to a press statement. “Investigative journalists can help adapt their extensive reporting about organized crime and corruption into new formats to reach more audiences while filmmakers can pull from a wealth of content and expertise across subjects to inform their projects.”

It seems to tickle Graham Yost when people refer to Silo as a sci-fi drama.
Though the Apple series is as high-concept as it gets—the adaptation of Hugh Howey’s novels is about a futuristic community that exists in a massive underground vault with 144 floors — there are no spaceships in Silo. And there are certainly no lasers.
“It’s not science heavy,” says Yost, the clever mind behind FX’s Justified, who created the Rebecca Ferguson starrer for the streamer. “For me, it’s fantasy, it’s whatever. It’s alternate reality, all that stuff. But the key is to make it feel real and lived-in. I mean honestly, if you pick at the science too much, it falls apart.”
Several studios tried to pick apart Howey’s tomes before Silo finally became a small-screen reality. After Howey self-published Wool, the first book in his dystopian series in 2011, 20th Century Fox...

“Ultimately, this is a mystery show, grounded on characters in a world that we could believe in,” declares “Silo” creator and showrunner Graham Yost. For our recent webchat he adds, “What is real and what isn’t? Who controls the knowledge? And then the big thing for me is, why is this happening? Why are they living underground? That kept me going through the three books,” he says, adding with a knowing smile, “buy the books, but don’t read them until the entire television series is over, because we’re going to veer in some ways and stay close in others. But mostly we want to get the fun of revealing the answers to the mysteries!” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

“If you see the opening title, you see just echoes of people,” explains Morten Tyldum about the mystery that imbues every level of the behemoth silo structure that sustains thousands of human beings in a post-apocalyptic world. Apple TV+ this morning dropped the first teaser trailer for its highly-anticipated nine-part, fact-based, World War II limited series “Masters of the Air,” based on the Donald L. Miller book of the same name and emerging from the same executive producing team of Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman that made the multiple Emmy-winning, HBO WWII miniseries “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” Premiering January 26, 2024, the wartime drama, scripted for streaming by writer John Orloff, stars 2023 Oscar nominees Austin Butler (“Elvis”) and Barry Keoghan. Watch the teaser trailer above.
The epic “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the so-called “Bloody Hundredth”) between 1942 and ’45 as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet. Apple TV+ is shifting up its rollout strategy for Slow Horses Season 3, and it means we'll be getting new episodes sooner.
As revealed Tuesday morning, the highly-anticipated next chapter of the Gary Oldman drama will now premiere on Wednesday, November 29, 2023.
It was previously revealed that new episodes would air beginning December 1, 2023, so we're getting them two days earlier.
Apple TV+ has been experimenting with rolling out shows earlier in the week, and it worked very well for Ted Lasso Season 3, so we're inclined to believe this will be a good thing for this hit drama series.
We also got our first look at Slow Horses Season 3 today, with Apple TV+ sharing the official trailer.

“I need a team of good agents, but I just have the Slow Horses,” laments slovenly senior agent Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), who never misses a chance to crack wise, even when lives are on the line.
Later in the clip, River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) calls from a besieged warehouse to tell Lamb, “There are men outside with guns. Some backup might be handy.”
Lamb’s nonchalant reply, “Well, I’m busy.”
Responds a frustrated Cartwright, “Ok, thanks, I’m sure the situation will resolve itself.”

“The Americans” showrunner Joel Fields slammed the Writers’ Guild of America for its failure to condemn Hamas’ attack on Israel.
“The Writers Guild has failed us deeply,” he said Wednesday during a panel at Variety’s Hollywood & Antisemitism Summit. “For an organization that constantly puts out statements to make sure that it’s on the right side of history, it has sadly issued its statements through its silence.”
The latest criticism of the WGA’s response to Israel follows an open letter signed by a group of screenwriters, which included Fields, Eli Roth, Graham Yost, Amy Chozick, Jerry Seinfeld, Steven Levitan, Scott Frank, Amy Sherman-Palladino, among others.
“When it comes to taking a stand, the Writers Guild of America has always led by example. When employers sought to exploit our work, the Guild bravely spoke up. When the BLM movement took flight, the Guild rightfully spoke up. When the #MeToo...

Over a week after Israel was brutally attacked by Hamas terrorists, a number of showrunners today publicly called out the Writer’s Guild for their silence on the matter.
Today, in an open letter posted to Medium, senior showrunners expressed disappointment that the WGA has not spoken.
“When it comes to taking a stand, the Writers Guild of America has always led by example. When employers sought to exploit our work, the Guild bravely spoke up. When the BLM movement took flight, the Guild rightfully spoke up. When the #MeToo reckoning came and Hollywood needed to change, again the Guild spoke up.
“But when terrorists invaded Israel to murder, rape, and kidnap Jews… the Guild stayed silent.”
The letter was signed, “Writers Speak Out” and attached signatures from more than 60 prominent showrunners, including Eli Roth, Gideon Raff, Amy Chozick. Ellen Rapoport, and Graham Yost, among others.

Apple TV+ announced a January 26, 2024 premiere date and unveiled the first look at the highly-anticipated nine-part, fact-based, World War II limited series “Masters of the Air,” based on the Donald L. Miller book of the same name and emerging from the same executive producing team of Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman that made the multiple Emmy-winning, HBO WWII miniseries “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” The wartime drama, scripted for streaming by writer John Orloff, stars 2023 Oscar nominees Austin Butler (“Elvis”) and Barry Keoghan.
Portraying the emotional and psychological toll paid by these young men as they helped to destroy the horror...
