M. Night Shyamalan would have done things differently with The Last Airbender if it was entirely under his control. Released in 2005, the American animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender became a huge hit, with fans showering the series with love and appreciation. From then on, the demand for the show went on increasing, and adaptations of it came into existence.

There have been numerous instances when the screen adaptation has failed to hit the same mark as the original work (case in point: 2019’s Cats). The Last Airbender is no exception. The 2010 family-action movie, The Last Airbender was a complete disaster. However, it is really unfortunate that Shyamalan had to take all the blame.

Netflix’s live-action “Avatar: The Last Airbender” series is undergoing a change in leadership.
Variety has learned that Albert Kim, who developed the series and served as showrunner on Season 1, is stepping down. Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani will lead the show as executive producers going forward. Netflix has already announced the show has been renewed for two more seasons, concluding with Season 3.
Boylan served as co-executive producer on Season 1 of “Last Airbender,” while Raisani was an executive producer, director, and a VFX supervisor. Kim will remain onboard as an executive producer for Seasons 2 and 3. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Kim wanted to explore new opportunities following the multi-year development process on “Last Airbender” and has signed a deal with Disney to work as an executive producer on the “Percy Jackson” series while also developing new projects for that company.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is heading into its second season with its third showrunner at the helm.
Showrunner Albert Kim, who replaced creators Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, is also exiting the Netflix live-action series. Co-executive producer Christine Boylan and exec producer Jabbar Raisani — both of whom were hired by Kim — will take over as the drama’s third showrunners for the previously announced second and third seasons.
Sources say Kim’s intention was to lay the foundation for season one of Avatar: The Last Airbender after stepping in for the beloved franchise’s creators. Given the long turnaround time in crafting the series — Netflix ordered it in 2018, the creators left in late 2020 and the show didn’t debut until February 2024 — sources say Kim was ready to move on to new opportunities.

There is no denying that no other kids’ show will ever be able to match the magic of the Emmy Award-winning animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. The 2005 premiere of Nickelodeon’s animated fantasy action TV series marked the beginning of Aang and lasted until 2008. Netflix has also attempted to create a live-action adaptation, developed by Albert Kim.
Now, returning to the Nickelodeon show, we know that some characters have the ability to ‘bend’ or control any of the four elements: earth, fire, water, and air. Children, teenagers, and adults all enjoyed Avatar: The Last Airbender because of its well-developed world, exquisitely rendered characters, and mature writing. Of course, it contributed to its enormous critical and commercial success.

Netflix is doubling down on Avatar: The Last Airbender.
The streamer has renewed the lavish live-action adaptation of the Nickelodeon series for two more seasons.
The order will conclude the story of Aang’s journey to become the Avatar in fantastical world.
Since the show’s Feb. 22 debut, the series has been Netflix’s top English-language TV show with 41.1 million views, according to the streamer.
While the first season was eight episodes, there’s no word yet on the episode count of the final two seasons. Netflix has done double-season renewals before (on shows like Emily in Paris and Stranger Things), but this might be the first time the streamer has ordered two seasons to close out a series. The Avatar animated series likewise told its story across three seasons.

Avatar: The Last Airbender, the anime-inspired live-action series, will be able to tell the story of the four nations: Water. Earth. Fire. Air after Netflix renewed it for a further two seasons.
The streamer has handed the show a two-season renewal order to conclude the story of Aang’s journey to become the Avatar.
It comes after the show premiered on Netflix on February 22 and recorded 41.1M views in its first 11 days, topping its TV list for the last two weeks and being on track to enter its top ten most-watched list over its first three months.
The plan is to film these two seasons – Seasons 2 and 3 – in close succession in order to mitigate the fact that child actors tend to grow up quickly.
The series comes from Rideback, whose boss Dan Lin, an exec producer on the series, was recently named Netflix’s new film chief, replacing Scott Stuber.

‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Star Kiawentiio Says Netflix Adaptation “Took Out How Sexist Sokka Was”
Kiawentiio is teasing the live-action Netflix adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender and is revealing some key changes to Sokka.
When adapting the animated series into live-action, the writers chose to remove the “sexist” elements of the character portrayed by Ian Ousley.
“There’s more weight with realism in every way,” Ousley said in an interview with EW about the remake, with co-star Kiawentiio chiming in and adding, “I feel like we also took out the element of how sexist [Sokka] was. I feel like there were a lot of moments in the original show that were iffy.”
Ousley continued, “Yeah, totally. There are things that were redirected just because it might play a little differently [in live action].”
The publication noted that there are Reddit threads that are dedicated to pointing out Sokka’s sexist remarks with the character saying things like, “Girls are better at fixing pants than guys, and guys are better at hunting and fighting.

Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender series isn’t the first time the iconic animated show has made the leap to live-action. M. Night Shyamalan previously adapted the series with The Last Airbender in 2010, but Avatar fans have been eager to forget that it even exists.
Albert Kim, the showrunner behind the upcoming Netflix series, told Entertainment Weekly that he has actively avoided watching Shyamalan’s Avatar movie. “I’ll tell you something, I never watched the Shyamalan movie,” Kim said. “There was a period of time where I thought I should watch it, but then I thought, I don’t really want those images in my head as I start to go forward with our version of this project. So I avoided it purposefully.“

The spinoff of ABC’s “The Rookie,” which was renewed for a sixth season, stars Niecy Nash-Betts as Simone Clark, the oldest rookie in the FBI Academy. The procedural was introduced as a two-part event during the current fourth season of “The Rookie,” where Officer John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and the LA division of the FBI enlist the help of Simone when one of her former students is a suspect in a terror attack.
Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter are co-creators, co-showrunners and executive producers. Mark Gordon, Niecy Nash-Betts, Nathan Fillion, Michelle Chapman, Bill Norcross, Corey Miller, Michael Goi and Bibby Dunn are executive producers. "Avatar: The Last Airbender" is one of the most beloved American animated shows ever. This is a show that voice actor Mark Hamill once considered "too smart" to be a success, yet it was not only successful enough to get three seasons, it also got a popular sequel series. "The Last Airbender" gave young audiences an anime-inspired show that told a serialized story while still having standout standalone episodes. It introduced kids to a vast and rich fantasy world with lore and history on the level of big franchises like "Star Wars" and "Lord of the Rings."
It also managed to end on its own terms, with a masterpiece of a series finale that paid off details planned from the very beginning, without giving fans a clean and overly explained ending. The sequel, "The Legend of Korra," doubled down on the complex themes of "The Last Airbender" and used complex...

Now McKendry has made another “supernatural happenings in a confined location” horror film called Elevator Game, and it’s going to be released through the Shudder streaming service very soon… just not as soon as we had previously heard. Elevator Game was once set to start streaming on August 11th, but its release date has since shifted back to September 15th. And with that date just over a month away, a trailer has arrived online. Members of the Directors Guild of America have until Friday to vote on their new contract, and those contacted this week by Variety were overwhelmingly voting yes.
In interviews, members noted the contract includes significant gains in residuals, creative rights, safety provisions and working hours.
But several also indicated that they have no interest in compounding Hollywood’s labor strife. Most directors and below-the-line DGA members have been out of work since the Writers Guild of America strike began on May 2.
“I’ve been around long enough that is a pretty good deal, and I’d like to get back to work,” said Matt Rebenkoff, who has worked as a first assistant director on “Don’t Look Up,” and “Jumanji: The Next Level.”

ABC still has some decisions to make on its scripted slate.
The network has yet to make final calls on renewals for comedy Home Economics and The Rookie: Feds as well as The Good Lawyer, a backdoor pilot spinoff of The Good Doctor.
It comes after ABC passed on four of its pilots: Anthony Anderson-fronted Public Defenders and Ellie Kemper-led Keeping It Together, which is a remake of British comedy Motherland, as well as dramas The Hurt Unit, starring Melissa George and Ben McKenzie, and Judgement starring Sex/Life’s Sarah Shahi.
Deadline understands that ABC is unlikely to make all of these decisions until the writers strike is over and the future of the fall season is clearer. A decision on Home Economics may come first out of the three.

Exclusive: With the Writers Guilds strike now in its second day, negotiations for a new Directors Guild contract are now just one week away. And like the WGA, streaming residuals are on the DGA’s bargaining agenda when its contract talks start May 10.
And while the DGA has struck only once in its history – for three-plus hours back in 1987 – a directors strike cannot be ruled out this time. The DGA’s current film and TV contract expires June 30.
“Residuals are one of the most important benefits of being a DGA member,” the DGA said in a recent message to its members. “Residuals tie you to the economic success of your work, they provide a safety net between jobs, and they are a major funding source for our Pension Plan. For over 60 years, residuals have helped provide a secure future for our members.”

Last year, director Rebekah McKendry impressed our reviewer Tyler Nichols with the horror film Glorious, which took place in a rest stop bathroom. (You can read Tyler’s 8/10 review at This Link.) Now McKendry has made another “supernatural happenings in a confined location” horror film called Elevator Game, and Deadline reports that Elevator Game is going to be released through the Shudder streaming service, just like Glorious was!
Elevator Game will be available for Shudder subscribers in the US, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand to stream as of August 11th. It will also stream on AMC+ in some areas.
Michael Goi (Megan Is Missing) was originally attached to direct the film, but by the time production began McKendry was at the helm. Exclusive: AMC Networks’ horror streamer Shudder has acquired the supernatural feature Elevator Game. The Rebekah McKendry-directed flick will stream on Shudder beginning August 11, 2023 in territories including the U.S., UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. It will also stream on AMC+ where available.
Based on the online phenomenon of the same name, Elevator Game is penned by Travis Seppala (Captive). It follows socially awkward teenager Ryan, who ingratiates himself into a group of recent high school graduates that run an online web series debunking urban legends to find his sister, who disappeared months earlier, probably while taking the dangerous challenge. Playing the game involves riding the elevator in a specific sequence to invoke a supernatural creature called “The 5th Floor Woman.”
“It was several years ago when I first read about ‘The Elevator Game‘ online, and I was immediately intrigued by the rules, curse, and ‘The 5th Floor Woman,...

Hannes Hirsch’s debut feature, coming-of-age film “Drifter,” fresh off its world premiere at the Berlinale, will close the festival. Tünde Skovrán’s documentary “Who I am Not,” a portrait of the lives of two intersex South Africans and the challenges they face navigating binary sex and gender systems, will be the centerpiece presentation. Thanks to the runaway success of The Blair Witch Project in 1999, found footage movies quickly became the hottest thing in horror. By relying on camcorders, surveillance footage, and other unlikely camera sources, filmmakers could not only add some verisimilitude to their stories but could also do it on the cheap. But just as quickly, found footage became the most hated subgenre, as fans and critics decried its rigid constraints, laughing at the ridiculous ways characters justified recording when they should be running.
Just as the subgenre died, a new and more relevant approach emerged: desktop movies taking place entirely on computer screens, using webcams, streaming video, and recordings to tell their stories. Not only do desktop movies offer more variety in visual style, but they also better reflect our actual lives, as we spend a lot of time staring at computer and phone screens.
