The first look of the show was unveiled on Instagram on Thursday by showrunner and director Nikkhil Advani, who captioned Gandhi’s quote, “Jawahar and Sardar will be like two oxen yoked to the government cart. One will need the other, and both will pull together.”

In his over half-a-century-long Hindi film career, he sang more than a thousand songs, but just three serve to demonstrate his position in the industry’s scheme of things – the madcap “Ek Chatur Naar” where Kishore Kumar beats him; the enchanting qawwali “Na to karvaan ki talash hai” where Mohammed Rafi emerges triumphant eventually; and the classical contest “Ketaki gulab juhi”, where he beats Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.
This was part of the misfortune of Prabodh Chandra ‘Manna’ Dey, born on this day (May 1) in 1919 in Calcutta. His classical training, innate talent, and “masculine” voice made him perfect for all shades of songs – romantic (including those for the vintage-aged), folk ballads, philosophical musings, and more, but he was never deemed a top-notch singer.
A nephew of gifted blind singer-composer Krishna Chandra Dey, who paved his way into music and films, Manna Dey’s forte was challenging, classical-based songs, especially those that his contemporaries considered difficult,...

New Delhi, May 1 (Ians) More than three decades before Aamir Khan’s train stunt in “Ghulam” (1998), this actor, renowned for his natural performances, had already done such a hazardous exploit, not just a daredevil challenge on the screen, but to inject reality into the scene and save the filmmaker the “bother of back projection”.
Balraj Sahni also involved Meena Kumari in his risky ruse in “Pinjre ke Panchhi” (1966), which — in another strange resemblance with Aamir’s film — was shot at Khandala. The scene had her walking on the rail tracks in a bid to commit suicide, even as he ran after her and managed to pull her aside from the rushing train at the last minute.
The filmmaker only wanted shots of him running after her and pulling her away; those of the were to be juxtapositioned. Sahni, however, knew that a train would pass the spot soon, and if they moved fast,...

The delayed release of Indian feature film The Sabarmati Report has placed new scrutiny on Bollywood’s relationship with the country’s political machine, as elections in the world’s largest democracy enter their second week.
The political movie about the disputed 2002 Gujurat riots was due to be released early next month, right in the midst of the six-week election period, but it has been pushed back to August 2. Local reports have cited fears around inciting communal tensions as voters head to the polls.
The world’s most populous country has an extensive election process, which is running until June 1. By June 5, the world will have discovered whether controversial Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (Bjp) has been given a third term — a result widely expected coming as his tenure at the very top enters its second decade.

Michael Jackson‘s Bad includes many of his most impressive songs. The writer of one of the album’s songs said it came from God. That’s fascinating, considering that the music video for the tune includes images of some of the most famous religious leaders who ever lived.
Michael Jackson knew a song from ‘Bad’ came from God even though nobody told him that
“Man in the Mirror” was co-written by Siedah Garrett. Grett might be most known for duetting with the King of Pop on his hit ballad “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You.” During an interview with Blue Railroad, she said “Man in the Mirror” came from God. Despite this, she didn’t directly tell Jackson about its origins.
“My answer to him was that ‘I asked for it,'” she said. “I didn’t mention God because I didn’t know where he was as far as religion goes.

Mumbai, April 2 (Ians) Auteur Imtiaz Ali is one of the rare filmmakers who strikes a perfect balance between philosophy and entertainment in his stories.
While his earlier works like ‘Socha Na Tha’ and ‘Jab We Met’ were more on the entertaining side, films like ‘Love Aaj Kal’ (2009), ‘Rockstar’ and ‘Tamasha’ have aged like a fine wine and have cultivated a new fan base which craves for deeper meaning to a story as much as the entertainment.
The filmmaker is now gearing up for his ninth film, the biopic based on the highest selling Punjabi musician of all times, ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’.
“There are a lot of ‘9’ happening,” Imtiaz told Ians as he seems in a quirky mood.
“Nine is my favourite number, A.R. Rahman (his music composer) also loves nine, he has made ’99 Songs’ and ‘Chamkila’ is my ninth film”.

Best known for his Punjabi films ‘Anhe Ghore Da Daan’ and ‘Chauthi Koot’ which premiered at Venice and Cannes Film Festivals respectively, filmmaker Gurvinder Singh is all set to make a web series on revolutionary Bhagat Singh.
Stressing that he is still relevant and will continue to remain so, Singh said, “The revolutionary’s character has always fascinated me owing to the multiple layers he boasted of. Not many people have explored him completely. Yes, he was a revolutionary but also had a great sense of humour.”
The series will dwell upon how Bhagat Singh and his comrades ‘used’ the trial to amplify their ideas of independence.
While many other films have been made on Bhagat Singh, including ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh’, the filmmaker points out that in most films, the narrative was very linear.
“Not one spelt that he was an atheist,” says this Film and Television Institute of India (Ftii) pass-out.

Fighter Enjoys Higher Viewership Than Dunki & Salaar In Its Opening Week(Photo Credit –Facebook)
Hrithik Roshan’s Fighter, after its theatrical run has ended, is making noise on the Ott platform. The film was touted to be a big money spinner at the box office, and though it did reasonably well, it wasn’t up to the mark considering the scale and cost. Thankfully, it is now reaching more audiences on the small screen, and in fact, it has defeated Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki and Prabhas’ Salaar with its debut numbers.
Hrithik & Siddharth Anand’s combo failed this time!

Kannan Iyer‘s sophomore, Ae Watan Mere Watan, currently streaming on Prime Video, narrates the tale of a courageous young girl in pre-independent India when the British government controlled all the newspapers and private radio stations. It was done with the sole intention of manipulating the perceptions of the Indians to suit their cruel and deceptive agenda. Most of the freedom fighters and political leaders were in jail. Those who were not arrested went underground. The situation was both intimidating and dangerous, and the government has partially curbed the freedom movement. In response to this despot approach, the protagonist and her friends embark on a bold endeavor. They aim to inspire and unite fellow Indians in their struggle against the empire and liberate the nation from the fetters of slavery. While the premise holds promise, the film serves as another example where a potential concept doesn’t always ensure an equally engaging output.

Is there a more underrated actor in Indian cinema than Randeep Hooda? Opportunities to prove his heavy mettle seldom come his way. But when given a meaty role, Hooda lets us know what divides the men from the boys.
In Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, Hooda not only proves himself an able if somewhat self-indulgent director, but he also portrays one of the unsung founding fathers of Azad Bharat, the man and leader who dared to call out Mahatma Gandhi for his sometimes-myopic view of secularism.
Indeed, one of the highlights of this remarkable bio-pic are the dialogues between a benign Gandhi (played with a slightly smug self-love by Rajesh Khera) and an aggressive Savarkar. Gandhians may not agree with the portrayal of Gandhi as an incorrigible peacenik. Good films do that: they force open uncomfortable debates.

Politically-inspired biopic of Indian politician who opposed Gandhi’s non-violence is hamstrung by its own lack of action
Of all the hot takes you expect to see when you go to the cinema, the suggestion that Mahatma Gandhi was overrated is perhaps low down the list. But this Hindi biopic of Hindu nationalist leader Vinayak Damodar Savarkar argues exactly that, although it’s careful to have Savarkar note: “I don’t hate Gandhi, I hate non-violence.” Okay then. In general, the stance across the nearly three-hour runtime is that, in contrast to the famous maxim, the sword is in fact mightier than the pen, with Savarkar exhorting followers to “get rid of your pen and arm yourselves”.
What is odd is that the film doesn’t make more use of its own subject’s principles. Much ink has been spilled over the issue of whether on-screen violence is too glamorous,...

Actors are drawn to biopics like moths to a particularly bright, often gold-tinted flame because it allows them to test their impressionistic mettle, to inhabit the real life of someone who’s often larger than life, to chart how an extraordinary human being is transformed into an emblem of their moment. Audiences are drawn to biopics because we love actors, or at the very least we like seeing them trying to fill the shoes of these renowned figures and find the person beneath the symbolic purpose, shouted slogans, and prosthetic schnozzes.

Hindi cinema is filled with movies that delve into the Indian freedom struggle and other events that occurred in India post-Indian independence. The makers of such movies go ahead and take all the cinematic liberties they need to tweak the story and rely a lot of the narrative on jingoism. Just last week, there was Yodha, a movie about a soldier trying to avert the possibility of a conflict between India and its neighboring country. That film, incidentally, was produced by Dharma Films. Directed by Kannan Iyer, Ae Watan Mere Watan is the story of two freedom fighters who dared to make a difference for the sake of their motherland. The movie is based on two real-life freedom fighters who put a lot at stake to make sure their country received independence.

Kannan Iyer has done an excellent job adding another patriotic film Ae Watan Mere Watan to the list. The amazing cast of the film has won us over with their brilliant on-screen presence. This film talks about the sacrifices that the revolutionaries made to see a free India. Sara Ali Khan has left us speechless, playing the role of Usha Mehra, an unsung hero who has sacrificed her life to propagate Congress Radio to influence the people and push them to seek freedom during the Quit India Movement. The film brings to the forefront the undying will of the revolutionaries, whose sacrifices have ensured our freedom.

Ae Watan Mere Watan
It is strange, but director Kannan Iyer has directed just one other film in his entire career. Ek Thi Dayan in 2013 featured Konkona Sen Sharma as a, ha ha, witch. Which, if you think about it, is just the antithesis of what Sara Ali Khan plays in Iyer’s second film.
Ae Watan Mere Watan warmly embraces all the shining trophy-like atrophied tropes of desh-bhakti films, and yet succeeds in being a trifle removed from its flag-waving origins.
Sara Ali Khan, so far known for making faces on camera, withdraws into a quietly assured space to play Usha Mehta, a fierce nationalist who combated colonialism in her own way by manning an underground radio station propagating the views and ideology of Mahatma Gandhi while he, the Mahatma, was jailed.
Uniquely, the character Usha Mehta’s fight for freedom is in-sync with the actress’ flight into freedom.

Sara Ali Khan will be seen shortly in the upcoming Amazon Prime Video presentation, ‘Ae Watan Mere Watan’, which is based on the life of the young Gandhian, Usha Mehta, and her Congress Radio, which became the voice of the 1942 Quit India Movement.

The other day I was attending a marriage function in Bangalore. In one of the rooms where I was sitting with the guests, a radio was humming in the background, though there was a DJ music being played and all the guests on the room where glued to music on their mobiles. However, this radio was humming on, playing Binaca Geet Mala. I asked the owner why he was still playing the pocket radio when music was now available in different forms and that too in customized format in the cloud. He said radio was a part of his growing up and it was a manifestation of nostalgia, which no other format could replace, and the present mode of communication via Radio does not have that engaging aura that Ameen Sayani used to hold and continues to hold through archives.

In imagining a world where Gandhi and his killer learned to get along, Rajkumar Santoshi simplifies differences that remain perilous for India
On 30 January 1948, Mahatma Gandhi’s murder at the hands of Hindu nationalist Nathuram Godse sent shockwaves through the still nascent democracy of India. Reimagining an alternative reality where Gandhi survives the attack, Rajkumar Santoshi’s latest film purports to offer an unbiased debate of the conflicting ideologies between the non-violence advocate and his killer. Such a premise is already attracting its share of controversy: with the rise of Hindutva-inspired violence, many fear that the film is yet another attempt to reclaim Godse’s image as a patriot.
Despite being surrounded by such fervent discourse, Gandhi Godse Ek Yudh is, at the end of the day, a mediocre effort. Deepak Antani’s Gandhi and Chinmay Mandlekar’s Godse do share a startling resemblance with the real historical figures, but...

The motion poster of director Rajkumar Santoshi’s upcoming film ‘Gandhi Godse Ek Yudh’ was unveiled on Tuesday. The video depicts the war of ideologies between Mahatma Gandhi and Nathuram Godse. Nathuram Godse is the one who shot Mahatma Gandhi in broad daylight on January 30, 1948.
It starts off with Nathuram Godse saying that he always wanted to kill Gandhi and would still kill him if he got the chance. To which Gandhi says that a bullet can only kill a person and not the ideas propagated by them as they continue to inspire generations long after they’re gone.
Gandhi then asks what kind of war Godse thinks he is fighting against him, to which Godse says it’s the war of ideologies. Gandhi then goes on to say in the video that to fight an ideological war one doesn’t need weapons but the ideas as the ideological warfare tests the strength of ideologies.
