Television shows seem well-organized and choreographed. Yet, not everything about them always goes according to plan.
For example, an incidental character sometimes steals a scene and creates memorable television history.
Then, there are the characters who take things a step further by stealing scenes repeatedly until they become the stars themselves.
Particular characters, such as Dr. Gregory House on House, are often created to be standouts. Yet, occasionally, those main protagonists are entirely overshadowed.
In rare instances, characters who were supposed to be incidental became regulars and took over entire shows.
The Fonz on Happy Days (1974-1984)
Happy Days underwent several changes, including the recasting and eventual disappearance of Chuck Cunningham's character, but Arthur (The Fonz) Fonzarelli's addition most dramatically altered the show's trajectory.
Initially, Happy Days focused on the Cunningham family, especially teenager Richie (Ron Howard). The Fonz (Henry Winkler) was a side character. However, the motorcycle-riding, leather jacket-wearing greaser soon took over.

James Van Der Beek and Kerr Smith are looking back at filming Dawson’s Creek and recalled some death-defying experiences they had on jet skis at the time.
This week, the two actors told People magazine at 90s Con in Hartford, Connecticut, that things would sometimes get a bit wild behind the scenes of the hit teen drama when they were filming in Wilmington, North Carolina.
“A couple of the guys on the crew had boats and you know we had the guest stars come in and the writers come in every episode and we would take them out on the water on the weekends,” Smith, who played Jack McPhee, recalled. “We’d stop and eat crab in the morning yet. And we’d fill up the boats with whatever we needed. We would barbecue out on the island. We all had jet skis.”

We Are Family viewers showed concern when the game show’s usual host was missing from the finale, as he was in the emergency room a month ago.
Actor and comedian Anthony Anderson has hosted the game show since its Fox debut.
The multi-time Primetime Emmy nominee typically appears along with his mother, Doris Anderson, and they’ve been well-received as a duo.
Doris was there, but her son was noticeably absent from the big episode on Wednesday evening, as fellow actor, comedian, and host Joel McHale filled in.
The game show’s season finale was “Joel Control” ahead of the Season 2 premiere of his new comedy series, Animal Control, which arrives on Fox on March 6.
It was also another hosting gig for Joel, who previously filled in for Ken Jeong on Fox’s I Can See Your Voice.

SiriusXM and Stitcher will not have to face a lawsuit from former Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek accusing them of reneging on a $700,000 podcast deal.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Robert Broadbelt, in a tentative order issued on Friday, dismissed the suit, finding that the audio giant “did not enter into a contract” with the actor since they didn’t finalize the agreement.
Van Der Beek said he reached a deal over email with executives from SiriusXM to host 40 episodes in exchange for a $700,000 minimum guarantee and a 50 percent cut of the net ad revenue. He sued in 2022 after the company walked away from the agreement.
Ruling in favor of SiriusXM on summary judgment, the court concluded that the two sides aren’t bound by an April 2022 document outlining the terms of the deal. It pointed to the first page of the proposal, which states that it’s for “discussion purposes only,...

Anakin Skywalker was the most sought after role in film back at the turn of the century. Totally Killer director Nahnatchka Khan has quietly become one of the preeminent comedic voices in town.
As the creator of Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 and Fresh Off the Boat, Khan took her sensibilities to feature films in 2019, helming the well-received Netflix romantic comedy Always Be My Maybe. The rom-com, which starred Khan’s frequent collaborators Ali Wong and Randall Park, was embraced by 89 percent of critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and managed to make an impact in an overcrowded streaming market. Keanu Reeves’ role as a version of himself and his subsequent kiss-blowing meme certainly factored into Always Be My Maybe’s success, and it’s become one of the go-to examples of how Netflix has kept the rom-com alive in an era where the major studios no longer prioritize the genre.

James Van Der Beek has became the talk of Fox News after posting a viral rant on TikTok in which he slammed the Democratic National Committe (DNC) for not planning to host a debate between Joe Biden and his Democratic opponents once his bid for presidential re-election in 2024 is announced (via The Daily Beast). The DNC’s decision has been condemned by both media figures such as Joe Rogan and some of Biden’s Democratic challengers, including Robert F. Kennedy and Marianne Williamson.
Fox News’ Steve Doocy, who co-anchors the network’s morning show “Fox & Friends,” praised Van Der Beek for “ripping into” the DNC, saying, “I watched this video and I was like, ‘This guy deserves to be sitting on a panel analyzing everything that’s going on right now.”

Paula Cole isn’t the only one who doesn’t want to wait, as Dawson’s Creek fans have been hoping for a reunion for some time. And now that such fare is more popular than ever and this marks the 20th anniversary of the series finale, talk has again emerged from the creek.
During a discussion at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Joey Potter herself, Katie Holmes, addressed the idea of a Dawson’s Creek reunion. Unfortunately for fans of the teen drama, Holmes isn’t all that confident, despite some minor chatter. “There have been many discussions over the years. We all loved the experience…We’ve often talked about it…For now, we kind of just keeping saying that until there is a real reason to do it, it hasn’t been something where people have said, ‘This is the take on it.’”

Katie Holmes confirmed during an interview as part of the Kering Women in Motion talks at Cannes that multiple discussions have taken place about rebooting “Dawson’s Creek,” the teen drama series that ran for six seasons on The WB and made stars out of Holmes and her co-stars James Van Der Beek, Michelle Williams, Joshua Jackson and more.
“There have been many discussions over the years. We all loved the experience,” Holmes said. “There’s a protection that comes along with the discussion. The show was a time capsule. To put it into today’s world might tarnish it a little bit. It was right before everyone had a phone and social media and all of that, so there was an innocence that was there between the characters that was one of the things I think people liked about the show. Exclusive: Vince Vaughn will return to star in (and likely produce) a sequel to his hit 2004 comedy, Dodgeball, scripted by Jordan VanDina (The Binge), which is in early development at 20th Century Studios, Deadline has learned.
While Rawson Marshall Thurber wrote and directed the original film for 20th Century Fox, it’s not yet clear whether he’ll be involved in the sequel, and who, if not Thurber, would direct. Equally uncertain is who will join Vaughn on screen, though there’s certainly a deep bench of talent to pull from in looking back to Dodgeball‘s stacked ensemble, which included Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor, Justin Long, Stephen Root, Alan Tudyk, Joel David Moore, Chris Williams, Missi Pyle, Gary Cole, Jason Bateman and William Shatner, as well as the late Rip Torn.

Two all-new celebrities in disguise took on the reigning champ, Dandelion, for “Masked Singer in Space” on Wednesday’s “The Masked Singer.” After a performance of “Venus” by Bananarama, Lamp advanced to the Battle Royale where she got her lights cut off by UFO. The disguised celebrity pulled off her mask to reveal actress, director and author Melissa Joan Hart. The clues were obvious to all of the panelists except for Ken Jeong, who incorrectly guessed Oscar nominee Michelle Williams.
“This was something that I wanted to do for my kids,” Melissa told host Nick Cannon during her unmasked interview. “I wanted to overcome something. I have never sang in front of people before. It is terrifying to me! This is like overcoming a fear and, I did it, guys! I didn’t fall. I didn’t vomit.” She then confessed, “The lamp was sort of a giveaway too. Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched the Season 9, episode 9 of “The Masked Singer,” which aired April 12 on Fox.
It was “Masked Singer in Space Night,” but “The Masked Singer” could have also been celebrating “’90s Night.” That’s because the two celebrities unmasked on Wednesday’s episodes were both TV stars from that era: Melissa Joan Hart (of “Clarissa Explains It All” and “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” fame) and Alicia Witt. Hart was revealed to be Lamp, while Witt was Dandelion.
Witt had won the previous week as Dandelion, but her journey ended here. For Dandelion, panelist Ken Jeong guessed Witt right. Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg thought it was Milla Jovovich. Robin Thicke went with Sara Bareilles and Nicole Scherzinger named Zooey Deschanel.
For Lamp, McCarthy Wahlberg, Thicke and Scherzinger all got it right with Hart. Jeong went rogue with Michelle Williams.

How did Katie Holmes pass the time at home during the pandemic? By rewatching "Dawson's Creek" with daughter Suri Cruise, apparently. During a recent interview with Variety, Holmes shared rare insight into her relationship with 16-year-old Suri, whom she shares with ex-husband Tom Cruise. "She has seen 'Dawson's Creek,'" the actor confirmed to the outlet. "I think it's probably weird since she's a teenager. I'm not like, 'You need to watch mommy's work.' But during the pandemic, we had a good laugh about it." We have so many follow-up questions to this revelation: How long did it take them to binge all six seasons? Is Suri Team Pacey or Team Dawson?
Holmes added, "It's wild to have a daughter who's almost the same age as I was when I began all this." The star was 18 years old when she first graced our screens as Joey Potter and...

Boy bands are powerful. They've stood the test of time, staying endlessly relevant and fascinating, and have dominated pop culture discourse no matter the decade. Whether it be The Beatles or One Direction, we've at least once dreamed of following a boy band we've been obsessed with while they're on tour. And now, eOne is making a movie about it.
Titled "Rock The Boat," the female-driven boy band comedy stars queen of comedy Rebel Wilson, Leslie Mann, and James Van Der Beek. Here's everything we know about it.
Everything We Know About The Story Of Rock The Boat
As per Deadline, the film is being described as a "female-driven comedy" that borrows inspiration from the real-life phenomena generated by boy bands such as "Backstreet Boys" and "New Kids on the Block" during their reunion tours aboard luxury cruise ships. Fandom can be a viciously opinionated part of pop culture. Make us fall in love with a franchise and quickly watch as we designate ourselves as the chosen experts of everything about it. This passion often means we hold strong opinions about the way things should play out on screen, but rarely do we ever get the chance to make our versions of the story come to life.
Fandom also has a tendency to latch onto moments in movies or shows that seem drastically overdone or out of place. We love ridiculous scenes that we can quickly turn into fodder for the meme mill. James Van Der Beek ugly crying on a dock in "Dawson's Creek," Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson screaming at each other in "Marriage Story," Joaquin Phoenix dancing down the stairs in "Joker," and if you really want to dive deep into the meme world, Robert Pattinson...

When Kevin Williamson set out to make “Dawson’s Creek,” he had no idea what to expect. He definitely didn’t picture it becoming one of the biggest teen dramas of all time. In fact, in 1996, he had just sold “Scream” and didn’t even think of making a story based on his own childhood. But when it came up in a pitch meeting, “Dawson’s Creek” was born.

Hard as it may be to believe, the teens of Dawson’s Creek would be in their 40s and old enough to have high schoolers of their own by now. The hit WB teen drama debuted 25 years ago, launching the careers of James Van Der Beek, Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, and Michelle Williams. Airing for the first time on January 20, 1998, Dawson’s Creek followed initially four teenagers — nerdy filmmaker Dawson (Van Der Beek), his wisecracking friend Pacey (Jackson), tomboy next door Joey (Holmes), and New York City emigré Jen (Williams) — and their family members in the fictional town of Capeside, Massachusetts. Springing from the mind of Scream creator Kevin Williamson, Creek was more self-aware than your typical teen drama — and “show[ed] teens a reflection of how they want to be seen: witty, urbane, and always armed with a perfectly barbed, sarcastic comeback,” as Entertainment Weekly’s Chris Nashawaty wrote in 1997. If you...

"The Fabelmans" is a semi-autobiographical film by legendary director Steven Spielberg. It's his most personal creation, giving a dramatized account of his childhood love for filmmaking, his family, and how he tried to find truth and understand their problems through a camera lens. It also gives us insight into his family members who either encouraged his talent or looked at it as a hobby.
Michelle Williams plays Mitzi, the analog for Spielberg's mother Leah Adler, who supported Sammy (the Spielberg analog played by Gabriel Labelle) and his ambitions, finding her own path along the way. It's a profoundly personal film for Spielberg, who told The Hollywood Reporter in late 2022:
"My life with my mom and dad taught me a lesson, which I hope this film in a small way imparts. Which is, when does a young person in a family start to see his parents as human beings? In my case,...

From 1998 through 2003, Michelle Williams played Jen Lindley on the TV series "Dawson's Creek." It's where most of us first saw her; for some people, it was a formative part of their teenage years. Jen Lindley appeared on the scene in season 1, a girl from the small town of Capeside who had gone to New York City and had a rough time with drugs and sex. When she returns, judgments are made, she's part of a love triangle between Dawson (James Van Der Beek) and Joey (Katie Holmes), and she has a problematic relationship with her conservative Christian grandmother, aka Gram (Mary Beth Peil). Through the seasons (and Williams appeared in all of them), Jen became a beloved character right up until the tragic end.

“She immediately hit me with the cry face,” Van Der Beek laughed. “I thought, ‘That’s aggressive.’”

Lord Sugar is attracting crticism for saying people should be “paid less” for working at home.
The Apprentice star and business tycoon responded to a Good Morning Britain segment about how the cost of living crisis will affect those who no longer work in an office following the pandemic.
Sugar, 75, wrote on Wednesday (31 August): “@Gmb are saying people who work from home should be paid more to keep warm as companies are saving money while the worker are away. Rubbish.”
He continued: “They have to pay rent, heating and rates with or without a full work place. People should be paid less they are saving travel costs. [sic]”
Following his post, many called the business tycoon out for his words, and questioned his persistence in criticising those who work from home despite its benefits.
“People should be paid their worth and what their job is worth,” commenter @Crim_sol_PH said,...

James Van Der Beek has sued SiriusXM over a failed podcast deal.
The Dawson’s Creek alum filed a complaint for breach of contract in Los Angeles, claiming that SiriusXM agreed to a deal worth a minimum of 700k (£599k) for 40 podcast episodes.
According to Van Der Beek, the podcast would have explored his life as an actor and father.
Other financial terms outlined by the lawsuit, which was obtained by Entertainment Weekly, include a 153k (£130k) production budget and 50k (£42.7k) marketing budget, both recouped against revenue.
“The agreed-upon deal even provided [SiriusXM] with a first look so that [Van Der Beek] could not work on any other podcasts,” the suit reads. “Yet, after the project was green lit and several subsequent actions had been taken by [SiriusXM] to set the podcast up, Sirius and Stitcher reneged on the agreement and told [Van Der Beek] that they would not perform.”

Former Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek has sued SiriusXM and Stitcher for breach of contract over a podcast agreement allegedly worth at least 700,000.
According to the suit, filed in Los Angeles on Aug. 26, Van Der Beek reached an agreement over email with executives from the audio giant to host 40 podcast episodes, to be released weekly, in exchange for a 700,000 minimum guarantee and a 50 percent cut of the net ad revenue. Other financial terms outlined by the lawsuit include a 153,000 production budget and 50,000 marketing budget, both recouped against revenue.
But around July 8, SiriusXM ultimately backed away from the deal despite previous communications over email dating back to April that the company was “ready to call terms officially closed,” according to the suit. As a result, Van Der Beek has accused SiriusXM of reneging on its agreement after he had already “stopped negotiating...

People say never to judge a book by its cover, but when it comes to TV shows, sometimes it's just as important not to judge them by their titles. "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," for example, doesn't exactly sound like the groundbreaking and celebrated hero's journey that it is. Other shows like "Selfie," "Cougar Town," and the eventually mercifully renamed "Scrotal Recall" (it's called "Lovesick" now) are also way better than their titles would lead one to believe.
The same is true of 2012's short-lived ABC comedy "Don't Trust the B----- in Apartment 23," an outrageous, surreal, fast-paced sitcom starring Krysten Ritter, Dreama Walker, James Van Der Beek, and Eric Andre. Whereas some other titles oversell the wackier aspects of the shows in question, though, "Don't Trust the B" simply can't be tamed or contained by something as simple as a title.
This show by Nahnatchka Khan is an even wilder...

The Disney+ premiere of Dancing With the Stars is just around the corner. Airing live on September 19, Season 31 marks the first-ever live reality series on a streaming service. Disney+ shared the first Dancing With the Stars Season 31 trailer on Monday, August 22, and it showcases emotionally charged moments from contestants on past seasons. Janel Parrish, James Van Der Beek, Bindi Irwin, and JoJo Siwa are just some of the handful of past participants sharing the meaning of their time on the competition series. Irwin gets a lot of screen time as clips from the episode about her late father, Steve Irwin, roll. “This whole experience has changed me so much,” Siwa says. “For me, dance is always about the emotion. He is so proud of you,” a tearful Carrie Ann Inaba tells Irwin about the tribute to her father. With the emotional confessionals from past competitors, it seems the trailer is...
