“Hacks” is, and has always been, a relationship comedy. The HBO Max series from Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky takes an exhaustively progressive Gen Z comedy writer and pairs her with a legendary stand-up comic whose worldview has become as stale as her jokes. The first season harvested humor from their prickly interactions, as both Ava (Hannah Einbinder) and Deborah (Jean Smart) felt each other out while finding a working rhythm. In Season 2, they took their show on the road, driving their fragile yet fruitful new connection toward a creative explosion or a close-quarters’ flare-out.
Ava and Deborah’s relationship is strictly platonic — Deborah’s running jokes about Ava’s “huge” hands negate any romantic assumptions, which the show itself has also acknowledged as a sneaky running joke of its own — but they’re not without romance. “Hacks” fits the comfortable mold of a romantic-comedy. “Hacks” is back — and better than ever! Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the Max comedy’s triumphant return and Emmy hopes.
After missing eligibility last year, “Hacks” dropped the first two episodes of its nine-episode third season on Thursday. While the show has also skipped a year in the narrative with a one-year time jump, it has not skipped a beat in quality. The jokes are still hilarious, the season-long storyline clicks, and Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder are on fire. But will Emmy voters embrace the show again?

At the end of its second season, “Hacks” seemed to have written itself into a corner. On the heels of a hit special, veteran stand-up Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) fired Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder), the young writer whose perspective helped push Deborah out of a yearslong creative rut. While harsh, the move was uncharacteristically selfless on Deborah’s part, cutting Ava and her valuable advice loose in an act of tough love. But even as forcing Ava to step out of her shadow showed Deborah’s growth, it also broke up the professional partnership that helped define the Max comedy and propel “Hacks” to acclaim.

You would be forgiven for mistaking Hannah Einbinder for Ava Daniels, the character she plays on HBO’s Hacks. The actor shares certain similarities with the comedy writer she’s portrayed for two seasons now, like their dry delivery, which leaves you less than 100 percent sure of whether they’re fucking with you until they crack a smirk and let you in on the joke. That’s not all, though.
“We’re both the same age, and we have the same face and body, of course,” Einbinder shares. “She looks exactly like me.

Some categories are competitive this Emmy season and some categories are not. Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series certainly qualifies as the latter. Assuming there are only five nominees as in 2023 (although six is theoretically possible), the field already has three close to locks in last year’s winner in Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), the Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series winner Ayo Adebiri (“The Bear”), and the 2021 and 2022 winner Jean Smart (“Hacks”).

It’s been nearly two years since viewers saw the working relationship between comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) unravel following the launch of Deborah’s standup special in Hacks Season 2. Now, the series is revisiting their dynamic in Season 3, and a lot has changed for the ladies. “We meet Ava and Deborah a year-ish later after some time has passed, and they’re both respectively in good places,” Einbinder shares. “I mean, as good as they can be without each other.” As fans have come to learn over the seasons, Deborah and Ava have become pretty reliant on one another when it comes to their creativity in comedy. Max As Einbinder puts it, “Ava’s working, she’s got a great job. She’s got this live-in girlfriend. She’s doing really well, and Deborah’s obviously basking in the success of her latest special,...

With the May 31 Emmys eligibility cutoff almost exactly one month away, Emmys-related action is picking up.
On April 22, Ryan Seacrest, Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan came out for a screening and reception in Hollywood on behalf of ABC’s American Idol. Meanwhile, in New York, Peter Morgan, creator and principal writer of Netflix’s The Crown, was feted at the opening of his new Broadway play Patriots. And that same night, FX’s Shōgun had a well-received series — or season? — finale. A great buddy comedy that bridges its generation gap with smart show-business satire, Hacks’ worth-waiting-for third season (delayed a year by the Hollywood strikes) finds new purpose in the undying ambition of its leading lady, legendary comic Deborah Vance. Though she cut loose her young comedy-writer protégée Ava (Hannah Einbinder) a year ago for their own professional good, Deborah reels Ava back into her glamorous orbit when an opportunity arises: a late-night talk show gig for which she was passed over 40 years ago. “I need to be sharper and funnier than I’ve ever been,” Deborah declares. And because they somehow can’t quit each other despite their temperamental, sartorial and demographic differences, Ava puts just about everything on hold—a relationship, a dream writing job at a Last Week Tonight–style political comedy show—to support her idol, who’s also her tormentor. Deborah is one demanding piece of work,...

While the idea of comedy on television has been warped by the Emmys, some shows can deliver the joke factories that once littered the TV landscape. Three-camera sitcoms may be out of vogue, but Hacks takes the best bits of those shows and applies them to a single-camera setup. Hacks shines as the best of both worlds with withering jokes and incredible performances. It’s among the most poignant and topical shows of the moment while laying track that will allow it to hold up in the decades to come. It does not hurt that Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder are two of the funniest people on television.
Hacks Season 3 Plot
Deborah Vance (Smart) continues to dine out on the success of her special. She’s the toast of the comedy world, no longer confined to Las Vegas. Meanwhile Ava (Einbinder) succeeds away from Deborah. As a producer on a John Oliver-esque show,...

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit comedy as “Hacks” returns with its third season on May 2.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’ve circled back around to the 2024 Emmys comedy category — a genre we’ve paid little mind to so far because it seems obvious “The Bear” will sweep through the ceremony again. I love being a contrarian whenever possible — or, at least, speaking truth to power and groupthink — but even I’m not here to type about potential upsets, particularly with “The Bear” Season 3 set to debut in June, again, right when academy members are sitting down to vote. But in the interest of keeping things interesting — and because it’s probably now the best continuing show with “Succession” off the air (remember when we had it so good?...

True crime is getting more and more entertaining by the day and I don’t if that’s a good thing or a bad one. We have another brilliant true crime drama series, Under the Bridge, created by Quinn Shephard. Based on a 2005 book of the same name by Rebecca Godfrey, the Hulu series is set in 1997 and it follows the murder case of a 14-year-old girl which we see through the eyes of local police officer Cam Bentland and the author Godfrey. Under the Bridge stars Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough in the lead roles with Virtika Gupta, Chloe Guidry, Javon “Wanna” Walton, and Izzy G starring in supporting roles. So, if you love the thrilling and dreadful story of Under the Bridge, here are some other shows that have similar tone and story elements that you should check out next.

Delta Burke was once addicted to crystal meth as a way to lose weight.
Speaking with Chelsea Devantez on her Glamorous Trash podcast, Burke – who played Suzanne Sugarbaker on sitcom Designing Women – talked about her falling out with series creator Linda Bloodworth-Thomason and subsequent drug abuse.
“It got ugly and very sad,” said Burke. She worked with Bloodworth-Thomason on the sitcom Filthy Rich before Designing Women, and claimed she viewed her as a mentor.
“We do Designing Women, and I’m so happy to be there,” she said. “I love everything. But then things started to change, which I won’t go into. But that, combined with becoming famous, I simply couldn’t cope with.”
“I wanted to leave,” she added, “and I wasn’t allowed to leave. I don’t know what would have happened to me if I had been allowed to leave. Staying gave me an amazing character to get to play…...

Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder) are right back where they started in the Hacks season three trailer.
After Deborah let Ava go as a way for her to spread her wings and grow as a writer, Ava finds herself unable to move on without her mentor.
Since viewers last saw Deborah, her special has become a smash hit and she’s become a bigger star than she ever was. “Your career has never been hotter. Did you ever think you’d be back on top?” asks a reporter on a red carpet. Deborah, who has reclaimed her diva status, not-so-humbly responds, “Yes.”
When Ava realizes she’s at the same event as Deborah, she’s informed by agent Jimmy LuSaque (co-creator Paul W. Downs, who was promoted to a series regular for season three) that Deborah has not just hired a new writer — she’s now employed two to replace Ava.

“Hacks” is back on Max for Season 3 on May 2, and the streaming service released a new trailer for the Emmy-winning comedy on Tuesday.
In Season 3, Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) reunites with Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) after Deborah fired her at the end of Season 2 so Ava could pursue her own dreams. Now, after months apart, they’re both at different places in their careers – with the success of her special, Deborah is back on top, while Ava has enough self-respect to demand that Deborah not make fun of her appearance (yeah right) – and they’re going to try to take advantage of their momentum. “Anything I want to do, I have to do them now,” Deborah tells Ava. She has to strike while the curling iron is hot.

‘Hacks’ stars and producers prep for show’s overdue Season 3 return by defending why women are funny
At last, our long national nightmare is nearly over.
It only seems like the much-decorated Max comedy “Hacks” has been away forever. It’s actually been less than two years. Overcoming strikes by writers and actors and a health crisis involving star Jean Smart – who won the Emmy for Best Comedy Actress in each of the show’s first pair of seasons – the series returns for Season 3 on May 2. The streamer will roll out two episodes on May 2, 9, 16 and 23 before running the finale of the nine-episode season on May 30.
“Hacks” was something of an Emmy juggernaut in 2021 and 2022 before going Awol due to a 10-month production delay in 2023. It earned 15 nominations in its first season and 17 in its second. It converted six of those 32 nominations (which included a pair of Best Comedy series bids) to wins, including the two for Smart as well as for the show’s writing and directing.

Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back to type about comedy — and not the comedy of seeing Tom Ripley try to dodge a runaway motorboat. Two years ago, in the Season 2 finale of “Hacks,” it appeared that Deborah Vance and her protégé Ava Daniels had reached the end of the road. Deborah (Jean Smart), a jaded Las Vegas comic, and Ava (Hannah Einbinder), the young and eager joke writer she’d hired, had together crafted a TV special that showcased Deborah’s wit and her willingness to change with the times. It was a perfect merging of what Deborah brought to the table and what she’d learned, at times unwillingly, from her young partner — and, having decided they’d done all they could together, Deborah fired Ava.
What a surprising place to arrive, after the rollicking two-year journey these characters had undergone! But there was a problem with a finale this satisfying. “People are like, ‘It felt like it could have been the end,’” recalls co-creator Jen Statsky. “And you’re like, ‘No! No!

Jill Biden and Halle Berry at A Day of Unreasonable Conversation
Through thought-provoking discussions, impactful performances, and, at times, emotional conversations, A Day of Unreasonable Conversation surfaced new perspectives on today’s most complex topics to an audience of television writers, showrunners, and executives. Speakers were vulnerable in sharing stories that often do not get heard and urged the audience of TV creators to incorporate these experiences into their work.
First Lady Jill Biden and Halle Berry candidly discussed formerly taboo women’s health topics such as menopause, emphasizing the need for a new approach to women’s health research. Berry shared a personal story about how she realized that she was going through perimenopause, bringing forth blushes and laughter from the audience.
