- Brother of Alain Sarde, they are the sons of soprano Andrée Gabriel.
- According to Bertrand Tavernier, Marco Ferreri based some of the eccentricities of the characters in The Big Feast (1973) on Sarde. Gluttony was not one of them, however: always changing his mind about his order in restaurants, the table would soon fill up with several uneaten dishes.
- Bertrand Tavernier also credits Sarde with helping him restructure the editing of sequences in many of his films. "He's a magnificent spectator. He knows how to see a film, analyse it, and make judgements that are precise and warm. He immediately gives a sharp look at the bones of a film, or just a simple sequence, and he puts his finger on what's wrong. On several occasions he's caused me to simplify a construction.".
- Member of the 'Official Competition' jury at the 41st Cannes International Film Festival in 1988.
- He co-founded the Studio Philippe Sarde with William Flageollet.
