At long last, Jigsaw returned in Saw X. Set between the events of Saw and Saw II, the tenth installment is a gruesome fan-pleaser led by a franchise-best performance from Tobin Bell as John Kramer.
Along with a six-part making-of documentary and more, the film’s home video release features an audio commentary by director-editor Kevin Greutert, cinematographer Nick Matthews, and production designer Anthony Stabley.
Here are nine things I learned from the Saw X commentary…
1. Kevin Greutert was unsure about the concept until he read the script.
Greutert — who edited six previous Saw films and directed Saw VI and Saw 3D — is one of the few Saw creatives to return for Saw X, but he wasn’t sold on the initial concept.
“I’d heard about it years before, what the concept of the movie was, and I was like, ‘I don’t know. Really? Cancer?’ I just wasn...

What Halloween would be complete without a little "Saw"? After the ninth chapter in the 2000s horror mainstay, "Spiral: From the Book of Saw," opened in May 2021, this year's "Saw X" saw the series return to a far more traditional, scary season-adjacent launch date in late September. The move paid off at the box office, with "Saw X" scoring the franchise's strongest box office debut in over a decade and very nearly taking the number one spot if it hadn't been for those snoopin' Paw Patrollers (I guess #SawPatrol became a real thing after all). Now, the film is headed to Premium Video on Demand and Premium Electronic Sell-Through just in time for your All Hallows' Eve watch party on October 20, 2023, with its release on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital to follow a month later on November 21.

Franchise veterans John “Jigsaw” Kramer (Tobin Bell) and Amanda Young (Shawnee Smith) are back in action in the milestone sequel Saw X (our review), playing in theaters now. The sequel blends the old with the new, including relocating the lethal terror to Mexico. Bloody Disgusting spoke with director Kevin Greutert and production designer Anthony Stabley about how the Mexico setting informed the traps and new batch of survivors.
Watch the video interview below, where Stabley reveals what mythology he drew from when creating the production design, and how actor Paulette Hernandez‘s intensity set the bar high for the scenes that followed.
Director Kevin Greutert, the franchise’s long-term editor since 2004’s Saw, helms the tenth installment from the screenplay by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger.
Greutert, Bell, and Smith aren’t the only returning franchise vets either; producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules launched the franchise in 2004 alongside James Wan...

“Saw X” begins with the kind of reverse time jump that only a horror franchise on its tenth film would dare to attempt. After the previous eight sequels advanced the story of John “Jigsaw” Kramer and his many imitators in a relatively linear fashion — while relying heavily on flashbacks to keep including Tobin Bell after his character’s early death — “Saw X” takes place in 2004, just three weeks after the events of the original film.
John Kramer is still alive in the new movie, battling a deteriorating cancer diagnosis that simultaneously serves as his motivation and an explanation for why he appears to have aged 20 years in three weeks. When his prognosis looks bleak, he travels to Mexico City to participate in an experimental treatment program that offers him a new lease on life. But when he finds out that the costly procedure was a scam and his cancer wasn’t actually cured,...

When you think of Sundance movies, you usually think of quirky, optimistic or melodramatic coming-of-age stories. Films like “Manchester by the Sea,” “Coda” or “The Big Sick.” But the movie that spawned the most successful franchise from its Sundance debut is none of those things. In January 2004, Sundance audiences were knocked on their collective butts by “Saw,” an out-of-nowhere horror flick from two unknown Australian filmmakers.
Director James Wan and screenwriter Leigh Whannell’s “Saw” offered a deceptively simple premise of two desperate men chained together in an empty room with little idea of how they got there or how to get out.
Starring Cary Elwes and Danny Glover, Monica Potter and a pre-“Lost” Michael Emerson, “Saw” inspired a new wave of grindhouse horror, films that reveled in old-school gore and a certain Rube Goldberg mentality to the kills beyond just attractive teenagers being picked off one by one.

There are some times that you really just have to pinch yourself to make sure you’re not dreaming, and I had one of those moments as I stepped onto the infamous bathroom set of Saw. Set up at the Saw Experience in Las Vegas, it was a pleasure to get to talk all things Saw in a place straight out of that universe. While we obviously couldn’t get into spoilers producers Mark Burg, Oren Koules, director Kevin Greutert and production designer Anthony Stabley were an absolute pleasure to chat with. We went over some of the traps of the film as well as just how great it was to see John and Amanda up on film together again. Our review drops tonight, but we did post a quick reaction yesterday – check it out here. And yes, there were some very slight sequel talks so if you’re a fan of the series,...

Saw X, the tenth film in the Saw franchise, is set to reach theatres on September 29th. With just one week to go before Jigsaw returns to the big screen, a featurette has arrived online to give us a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Saw X, with comments from director Kevin Greutert, producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules, cinematographer Nick Matthews, production designer Anthony Stabley, and cast members Synnøve Macody Lund (Ragnarok), who plays new character Cecilia Perderson, and Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith, who reprise the roles of John “Jigsaw” Kramer and his protégé Amanda Young. For the first time in franchise history, Saw X will actually establish the location it is set in and director Kevin Greutert is opening up about setting the horror film in Mexico.
“There’s such a mythology, the city is so amazing, and we can’t speak enough about it,” Greutert said during a fan Q&a session, according to The Direct. “And just that, there’s a certain creepiness to it and a certain history, and it just absolutely worked for us… It is the first time that, I’m sure you all know, but it’s the first time we’ve ever said where we are in a movie. And we kind of really leaned into that…”

Long before M3GAN danced into our lives, one of the creepiest little automatons in horror was Billy the Puppet, star of the "Saw" movies. Less than two decades after James Wan's twisted tale brought Billy into the world, the perennially successful franchise has reached its tenth installment -- and Lionsgate has now dropped the first trailer for "Saw X."
In keeping with the series' tradition of ping-ponging around its own timeline, "Saw X" takes us back to just past the beginning. It's set between the events of "Saw" and "Saw II," which means that Tobin Bell is back as the whispery-voiced villain/god of the Jigsaw realm, John Kramer. Per the official synopsis, "Saw X" follows John as he "travels to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure in hopes of a miracle cure for his cancer." When he learns that "the entire operation is a scam to defraud the most vulnerable,...

Timothy Tracy accused by officials of paying right-wing groups of provoking post-election unrest on behalf of Us intelligence
An American film-maker was formally charged late Saturday by Venezuelan officials who accuse him of paying right-wing groups to foment post-election unrest on behalf of Us intelligence.
The federal prosecutor's office said Timothy Tracy, 35, of West Hollywood, California, was charged with crimes including conspiracy, association for criminal purposes and use of a false document.
On Thursday, President Nicolas Maduro said he had personally ordered Tracy's arrest on suspicion of "creating violence in the cities of this country" in the wake of a 14 April presidential election narrowly won by the hand-picked successor to Hugo Chávez.
Opposition candidate Henrique Capriles contends the election was stolen from him by fraud, setting up post-election tensions and bitter accusations between Venezuela's government and opposition.
Friends say Tracy is an innocent, self-funded documentary film-maker with no political aims or government ties.

Chuck Workman’s documentary Visionaries continues to receive mixed and muted reviews, but it’s really great to see the underground being discussed in such various venues. Wfmu has the best review I’ve read so far, written by someone who really knows and understands underground film history. This is this week’s must read link. It was also fun to read a review-slash-interview with Workman on Hollywood business-oriented website The Wrap. Of course, articles on websites like these don’t include links to references on its subjects — e.g. Mekas, Anthology, Anger, et. al. — so uninformed readers can learn more. C’est la vie. But Workman says something I truly believe and is a guiding principle behind Bad Lit these days: “there’s an audience among people who don’t know experimental film, but would enjoy it if they saw it.” A couple websites posted up late reports from...
