The Terrifying 1973 TV Movie Don’T Be Afraid Of The Dark is now Available on Blu-ray from Warner Archives
An old house…a mysterious locked room…a terrifying secret. Elements that make a horror movie memorably chilling get a taut, spooky reworking in Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. Kim Darby (True Grit)and Jim Hutton (The Green Berets) star as Sally and Alex, young marrieds who inherit a crumbling mansion. Despite warnings to leave well enough alone in her new home, Sally unlocks the mysterious room, opens a bricked-up fireplace…and unleashes a horde of hideous whispering, murdering minidemons only she can see and hear. This is the original TV movie that inspired the 2010 theatrical movie starring Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce.

We're back with the horror highlights of Day 2 of this year's Sdcc, and you better rest up! On tap are "The Walking Dead," "Bates Motel," "Sleepy Hollow," Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, Scream Factory, and More!
What you'll find below is just the tip of the iceberg (and it does include a few "fringe" panels that we thought might be interest). Be sure to visit the official San Diego Comic-Con 2014 website for the full lineup.
Day 2: Friday, July 25, 2014
10:00 Am - Publishers Weekly: Behind the Digital Line
As digital comics have become a driving force of the medium, more publishers and creators have launched digital first lines of comics. How do publishers and creators deal with the unique properties of the web and tablet? How do readers react? Are they an evolution from webcomics or their own medium? And how will technological evolution affect storytelling as more choices arise? Pw's...

Labeling the just released CD soundtrack for the indie horror hit I Was A Teenage Werebear as “sexually and morally offensive”, eBay has removed it from sale, the film’s director, Tim Sullivan, reports.
Writing on Facebook, Sullivan said:
“Yes it is True ! eBay has banned the sale of the personally autographed Teenage Werebear CD and 8×10 on its site, deeming it “sexually and morally offensive”. I Kid You Not!
Rather than fight an uphill battle with the fine folks in eBay’s ‘safety & trust” department, I have decided to offer an alternative to those wishing to indulge in the apparently corrupt delights of the Werebear World”
Booted from Ebay
An homage to the drive-in movies of the 50’s and 60’s, Chillerama is a comedy-horror anthology comprised of four vignettes from some of contemporary horror’s biggest filmmakers. I Was A Teenage Werebear is Sullivan’s contribution to the project.

Mayan prophecies notwithstanding, terror will be coming to video stores nearly once every three weeks. The following titles are just but a taste of the mainstream releases. Valentine’s Day, however, will offer North American audiences a hint of what may be a very controversial title for some, and a godsend to others just because of the subject matter:
(Jan 3) – Guillermo del Toro’s remake of Don't Be Afraid of the Dark gets dibs as one of the many titles to be released first for 2012. This video release will offer a three part, making-of documentary: "The Story," "Blackwood's Mansion," "The Creatures." The Blu-ray edition will include a conceptual art gallery.

For an early or late Christmas present, "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark: Blackwood's Guide to Dangerous Fairies", by Del Toro, can be a great accompaniment prior to rewatching the film again. This...

Okay, this is odd. This is the first M.O.D. I've ever gotten a second edition of. Yes, Warner released Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (1973) about a year ago in the manufacture on demand format and now they've gone back and released it again in a nicely remastered special edition with an audio commentary. But hey, who's complaining? This is truly a better visual experience and it's clearly motivated by the release of the new film. Purists look out. The commentary by Steve 'Uncle Creepy' Barton (Dread Central), screenwriter Jeff Reddick (Final Destination, Day of the Dead) and Fangoria's Sean Abley, though full of solid info about the film, is a little irreverent. The bottom line is that Kim Darby is still out there,...

Jason Paul Collum is the genre director of several films and was featured as Bachelor of the Month in Instinct magazine. He is mentored by legendary scream queen Brinke Stevens who starred in two of his more popular efforts October Moon and its sequel November Son. Both of these films were refreshingly different films in the genre as they were gay psychological horror thrillers. We had the chance to ask him a few questions about his career and these films. Here is what he had to say:
For horror fans who may be unfamiliar with you, who is Jason Paul Collum and what is he all about?
I'm a guy with my hands in a lot of pots. I write, direct, produce and very occasionally act (a loose term) in mostly low-budget, independent films. I've worked on projects with budgets as low as $500 and as high as $150,000. I even worked...

Joshua Grannell. known to many by his alter-ego Peaches Christ, has just completed his directorial debut, All About Evil, Alan tracks him down for a chat...
Joshua Grannell is better known as 'Peaches Christ', the host of the hugely successful Midnight Mass in San Francisco, which used to be a regular event that always featured an astonishing line-up of guests, including cult favourites like John Waters, Linda Blair, Mink Stole, Edie McClurg and Elvira, The Mistress of the Dark!
In Joshua Grannell's All About Evil the shy and retiring Deborah (Natasha Lyonne) inherits her father's movie house. The drawback to her inheritance is that The Victoria Theatre is in financial jeopardy. The situation serves as the catalyst for Deborah's more mercurial and murderous talents to come to the surface and her snuff movies become massively successful on the San Francisco B-movie circuit, garnering thousands of gore-crazed fans.

I first became aware of Joshua Grannell and his alter ego, Peaches Christ, on a trip to San Francisco in 2000, maybe 2001? I was dating a guy who had moved down from Sf to Los Angeles, and on one of our many trips up north we took in a screening of Showgirls at the Midnight Mass summer film series. Peaches was the host of the evening, and the show opened with a re-enactment of both the “Goddess” number and the “Nomi F-s Zack in the pool” scene with drag queens (and one drag king playing “Zack.”) I was hooked.
Over the years I would try and catch Midnight Mass screenings whenever I was up in Sf. I found out that Peaches was actually Grannell who was actually a manager at the Bridge, the theater in which the madness took place. Grannell programmed the series, and created unique pre-shows with his drag...

December 1 is World AIDS Day, and I have the pleasure of knowing someone HIV+ who is both connected to the horror/sci-fi world and a huge fan, actress Alexandra Billings.
I met Alexandra ages and ages ago, right around when someone invented fire. We were both eyeballs deep in the Chicago theater community, doing show after show, sometimes two or even three different plays a night, with the energy only a 20-something possesses. We worked together, became friends, and eventually both moved to La around the same time. You can read a fairly detailed account of her Chicago days (through my eyes) including a lot of info about her transgender journey in my other blog here: http://zombietruckstop.livejournal.com/2006/12/01/ - and of course on her own website.
After so much theater, Alexandra now swims around the Los Angeles on-camera, TV and film pool, slowly but surely convincing forward-thinking casting...

What can I say about Sybil Danning that would be a surprise to anyone? Gorgeous, talented, fun to watch. In whatever project she appears, Danning is always completely committed. Watching her as I have over the years, I see not only chops, but a healthy sense of humor as well. I feel like she “gets it,” if that makes any sense. (And after this interview, I’m even more of a fan.) Courtesy of friend Fred Olen Ray, Danning joins all the vampire fun on The Lair in this third season.
Sean Abley: We’ve actually met very briefly—I moderated the Lair panel for the Fangoria Weekend of Horrors in La months ago. I was incredibly intimidated by meeting you. You’re Sybil Danning! The Guilty Pleasure Fairy visited me in my sleep recently and left The Lair: Season Three under my pillow. Woo-hoo! The Fred Olen Ray vampire-sex-club soap opera is back—now with 100 percent more Sybil Danning! Courtesy of the friendly folks at here! TV (I really wish they’d just break down and capitalize “Here”—seriously), which is currently airing the series on-demand, I had a chance to chat briefly with a few of the stars of this new season.

As an Irishman who’s never set foot in Ireland, I’m sort of obsessed with all things Irish. So I was ecstatic to find out I Sell The Dead was written and directed a real, live Irishman, from Ireland, with the accent, the pale (I call it “royal”) complexion, and the Guinness addiction—Glenn McQuaid. Let the stalking begin!
The press has had a field day with McQuaid’s film (including Fangoria; you can watch a nice “Making of…” feaurette and read a “Director’s Statement” here) McQuaid and the film are basically omnipresent in the horror and mainstream press at the moment, which is awesome…

In a interview I did with Sean Abley, writer, producer, & actor from 'Socket' for the 1st issue of Nowhere 2 Be Found Magazine coming out in January. He talked a little about the upcomming sequel. ..."The plot starts about a month after the end of the first film, with Matthew Montgomery's character waking up from his coma. We find that one of the characters from the first film has involved herself in the electric "reasearch", and together they figure out a way to make it even more twisted." They are currently searching for funding "I really hope we can start it soon" he said.

I met Armando Muñoz at the Los Angeles Weekend of Horrors after moderating the panel on The Lair. He approached me in the dealer’s room and we had a nice chat. I left with one of his films in hand and was soon watching one of the more twisted shorts I’ve seen in a long time.
A week later I had the complete Armando Muñoz collection in my hands – Killer Krapper, Mime After Midnight, Panty Kill, The Terrible Old Tran, Pervula and They Have No Shame. Each one more twisted than the next.
When I first started writing this blog, I vowed I would write about people and films that I found interesting, regardless of whether or not they were well known. With that in mind, I present should-be-better-known, out, underground filmmaker Armando Muñoz.

One of the nice things about being a gay horror filmmaker is, after you hang around awhile, you realize you’re part of a nice little club. And eventually, it feels like you all know each other.
I first met Jeffrey Reddick at a cast and crew screening of one of my films. Paul (Hellbent) Etheredge-Ouzts brought his friend “Jeffrey” to the screening, and we chit-chatted a bit afterward. On the way home my brain added up all the stuff we talked about, and suddenly it clicked—Was that the writer of Final Destination?
Since then we’ve become friends and, in the grand tradition of Hollywood, mainly see each other at screenings and conventions. He’s a busy guy, and kinda sorta has that career that many of us indie flick filmmakers dream of—access to the people who make it happen, and big(ger) budgets.

Sean Abley is about to scare you again.
The director of the recent Sf/horro themed Socket has produced a new twisted tale of pain, dread, death -- and porn. Directed by David Kittredge, who edited Abley's Socket feature, Pornography is, according to Abley, a "paranormal thriller set in the world gay adult video."
“It’s about what happens when a porn star disappears in the ’90s," Kittredge explains. " 15 years later, two guys try to figure out what happened. The mystery of what occurred kind of recedes as they search, and the obsession with finding out what was real and what was fantasy about pornography in general, and how they blur, becomes the real journey. It’s kind of about searching for something that you don’t really want to know the answer to, but you have to keep probing.”

On the previous Gay Of The Dead interview with Alan Rowe Kelly, we talked about his first two features, gender identity and killing kids. In this second half of our chat, we touch upon his latest endurance test, A Far Cry From Home, androgyny, the upcoming Don’t Look In The Basement remake and feeling guilty about finding white-trash-gay bashers hot.
Sean Abley: I loved your most recent film A Far Cry From Home especially for its uncompromising themes and execution. If “gay horror” as a genre truly exists, the films would have to be about something that is terrifying to the Glbt crowd, (e.g., people wanting to kill them because they’re queer)—which is what Far Cry is about. What was the genesis of this film?

Presented by the San Francisco Independent Film Festival, the line-up for the 6th annual Another Hole in the Head Film Festival (“Holehead 2009”)—running June 5-18, 2009 at the Roxie Film Center—has been officially announced. Let’s tackle that quartet first.

I had never seen any of Alan Rowe Kelly’s films until he contacted me—literally moments after posting my first Gay Of The Dead blog. And yes, that is Alan in the photo to the left. Don’t worry, we’ll get to that later.
Kelly’s opening salvo to me was the grisly, intense and controversial A Far Cry From Home segment from the recently wrapped Gallery Of Fear anthology, which he co-wrote, co-directed and produced for his Southpaw Pictures. From there I jumped back to his first feature, I’LL Bury You Tomorrow, a loopy, sprawling, bloody feature that manages to wind storylines of seven main characters into one big crazy fest. After that, I popped in The Blood Shed, which starts off with a preteen kid being yanked in half and just gets more insane (see: awesome) from there.

When Tony asked me to moderate a panel on The Lair for at the Los Angeles Weekend of Horrors, I was thrilled. I participated in a bunch of panels at Gaylaxicon a couple years ago and had a ball because, let’s face it, I’m a bit of a ham. So the opportunity to be on a panel at a Fango con was an automatic, “Yes!”
As the date approached, I started to feel more and more nervous. I wondered if anyone would actually show up for this panel. I mean, The Lair is a fun show, but it’s on a Pay-Per-View network, and I would guess that ninety percent of its audience is more camp enthusiast than horror fanatic. Would there be any fans of The Lair actually attending the con? And more importantly, would there be any Glbt horror fans attending the con? Okay, yes, obviously...
As the date approached, I started to feel more and more nervous. I wondered if anyone would actually show up for this panel. After a year of planning, the schedule for the West Coast edition of Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors convention is ready to be unveiled. The event will to be held this coming April 17-19 (three monstrous days and over 100 guests!) at the Los Angeles Convention Center (1201 South Figueroa).
All guests/events listed here are tentative. More stars are still joining the fun at this late stage, so expect lots of surprises all weekend long. And for the first time ever, we’ve added a second track of programming that will take place concurrently with the main track on Saturday and Sunday! Be sure to note which rooms your favorite panels will be held in. Details for the jam-packed film schedule, including several world premieres and more unannounced bonus guests, can be found here. For additional information and tickets to the Weekend of Horrors, produced by Creation and Fangoria Entertainment, go here.

For November Son (available on DVD April 14), the sequel to the gay thriller October Moon, writer/director Jason Paul Collum worked with both ends of the genre spectrum, the seasoned vet (Brinke Stevens) and the first-film newbie (Sacha Sacket).
Stevens, who reprises the role of “Nancy” in November Son, has over 100 acting credits. If you are a fan of the genre, you know Stevens even if you’ve never seen one of her films. By all accounts one of the nicest and most accommodating actresses to work with, Stevens weathered the “Girl in the Shower” storm of her early films and has come out the other side with nuanced performances in films like Mommy and October Moon. At an age when most B-movie queens fade into real estate careers, Stevens keeps racking up the roles, and she doesn’t have to take off her top to do it.

The word “notorious” can be loosely tossed around when describing a filmmaker that veers even slightly outside of mainstream cinematic confines, but when applied to Bruce Labruce, the term couldn’t be more accurate. Scenes of hardcore gay porn, Nazi fetishism and explicit gore, either separately or brazenly combined, are just a few of the subjects Labruce explores in films like No Skin Off My Ass, Skin Gang, Super 8 1/2, Hustler White and The Raspberry Reich.
Labruce’s latest film, Otto; Or, Up With Dead People, is a meditation on homosexuality, cinema and intimate relationships through the filter of a zombie flick. The first of his films to employ a full-on horror convention (zombies), Otto furthers Labruce’s boundary pushing reputation. And yet, mainstream audiences have taken the bait. Yes, it’s true—Otto is the first zombie film with hardcore gay porn scenes to screen at Sundance.

If his career keeps moving in the same direction, Matthew Montgomery may end up being the gay Parker Posey. Having played leads in at least seven independent features in just five years, plus another handful of supporting roles, he has established his indie street cred at a time when gay cinema seems to be exploding. Fans of gay cinema will probably remember Montgomery from Gone, But Not Forgotten, Long-term Relationship and the supernatural-tinged Back Soon.
Getting his start in Reign Of The Dead, a living dead short lensed in and around “Zombie Ground Zero,” Pittsburgh, he’s made his way up the indie food chain and appeared in other genre films, including Socket (which I wrote and directed, natch), Fear House and the upcoming Pornography.
But Montgomery isn’t just an actor in horror and sci-fi flicks; he’s a fan of them as well. A professed sci-fi nerd, Montogmery...

As a sidebar before we jump into today’s topic, I want to keep my promise that this blog won’t just be about politics, or even gay horror. Sometimes it will just be about hot guys. Case in point: Todd Farmer, screenwriter of Jason X (with my favorite in the series after the original) and My Bloody Valentine 3D (with Zane Smith), which I saw on opening weekend and absolutely loved.
I (briefly) interviewed Farmer for a project called “Expanded Books” (formerly “Book Look”) when my friend Peter Bracke’s Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History Of Friday The 13th had its release party. At the time I thought, “Uh…he cute.”
Cut To: My Bloody Valentine 3D. I go see the flick with a gaggle of homos and what are we treated to? Naked Todd Farmer! Ok, more like naked Todd Farmer’s ass, but still! As much...

Fangoria.com has launched Gay Of The Dead, the first-ever gay horror blog to be featured on a major non-gay horror website. The blog is written by out filmmaker Sean Abley, who helmed the critically acclaimed gay sci-fi/horror flick Socket.
“I want my blog to not only be the place to find out all about the burgeoning gay horror genre, but also to explore the good and bad in mainstream horror from a gay fan’s perspective,” Abley says. “I think it will be interesting to any horror fan, gay or straight. And hopefully it will be more of a big conversation than just a blog: I plan on responding to as many comments as I can.”
“I am thrilled to have Sean doing a Bloody Blog for Fangoria.com,” says Fangoria editor Tony Timpone. “With gay horror and gay characters/themes in straight horror becoming more popular and interesting than ever before,...
