Is Whoopi Goldberg returning to Star Trek? Her The View co-host Joy Behar seems to think so, at least. As captured by Twitter user Kyle Arking, during an appearance by Zoë Saldaña and director Marco Perego on the talk show to discuss their upcoming film The Absence of Eden, the conversation turned to the latest announcement of a fourth Star Trek film starring Saldaña and her crewmates from the 2009 J.J. Abrams reboot film. Saldaña was asked if she had any updates herself, prompting Behar to advise Goldberg, "don't tip your hand yet" and not to "let them know you got the job." Saldaña was enthusiastic about the prospect of Goldberg's return to the role of Guinan, but for her part, Goldberg denied everything.

As Benjamin Franklin famously wrote, “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”
The horror genre offers a controlled environment in which viewers can reflect on their own morality, whether it be via catharsis or escapism, but a personal loss can complicate one’s relationship with horror. Even the most hardened of fans may struggle to find comfort in the genre after experiencing the death of a loved one.
45 years ago today, Phantasm helped viewers confront death head-on while subtly exploring the grief that accompanies it. In the film, 13-year-old Mike (A. Michael Baldwin) convinces his older brother-turned-guardian Jody (Bill Thornbury) and their affable neighborhood ice cream man, Reggie (Reggie Bannister), to investigate a mysterious mortician dubbed The Tall Man (Angus Scrimm).

Abrams should consider revisiting his 2011 hit Super 8 for a sequel to mend recent franchise issues and showcase his storytelling abilities. Super 8 was a success financially and critically, offering a nostalgic and emotional sci-fi plot that can be expanded upon in a sequel. Returning to Super 8 would be a safer bet for Abrams compared to tackling another risky Star Trek or Star Wars project.
Famed director J.J. Abrams hasn't released a new film since 2019, and though there have been talks of him making a fourth Star Trek movie, the project he really should dedicate his time to is a sequel of one of his greatest sci-fi hits. Since 1990, J.J. Abrams has been at the forefront of sci-fi and fantasy films and television. In 2009, he famously took on the reboot of Star Trek, and a few years later, he directed two Star Wars movies. However, after what happened to J.

Star Trek 4 gets new screenwriter for "final chapter" of Kirk's crew after 8-year hiatus. J.J. Abrams' alternate timeline Enterprise team may reunite in long-awaited upcoming movie. Promising news for fans as Steve Yockey pens the new script, signaling potential return to big screen.
Star Trek 4 may finally take flight as a new screenwriter is penning what is billed as "the final chapter" of the Starship Enterprise crew led by Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk. The J.J. Abrams-produced and Justin Lin-directed Star Trek Beyond was the last Star Trek movie to hit theaters in the summer of 2016. Now 8 years later, this is the longest time there hasn't been a Star Trek movie in theaters since Star Trek: The Motion Picture launched Gene Roddenberry's 1960s TV series as a film franchise in 1979.

When a franchise has lasted for upwards of half a century and is still going strong, the decision-makers in charge will inevitably run into one pressing question above all others: Where do we go next? "Star Trek" became a beloved institution among the nerdiest of fans for a pretty good reason, largely because of its wholesale commitment to treading new ground and envisioning a new future. But with the franchise firing on all cylinders these days and no signs of slowing down anytime soon, writers have become increasingly hard-pressed to boldly go where no others have gone before ... literally speaking, that is, since recent "Star Trek" shows like "Strange New Worlds," "Lower Decks," "Discovery," "Picard," and more have filled in all sorts of gaps in the official canon.
It's no secret that Paramount is eager to get back in the big-screen business for "Trek," however, and one of the more...

“I can’t believe I get to play the captain of the Enterprise.”
Anson Mount is sitting across from me on one of the Toronto soundstages for the Paramount+ series “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” which is set in the years when his character, Capt. Christopher Pike, led the legendary Federation starship with a young Spock and Uhura. We’re speaking on the sleek Enterprise bridge, and Mount is recounting the out-of-body experience he had the first time he sat in the iconic captain’s chair. “I had this immediate flashback to playing ‘Star Trek’ as a kid,” he says. “I don’t think a day goes by where I don’t at some point stop and think to myself, ‘I’m on fucking “Star Trek.”’”
“Strange New Worlds” is the 12th “Star Trek” TV show since the original series debuted on NBC in 1966, introducing Gene Roddenberry’s vision of a hopeful future for humanity.

Fast & Furious and Star Trek: Beyond director Justin Lin is reportedly among the names sought by Marvel and Sony to direct Spider-Man 4.
Director Justin Lin has plenty of experience when it comes to action and special effects-filled franchises, given he’s made several entries in the Fast & Furious franchise. But he also has form when it comes to taking up the reigns of a film series from a departing director; in 2016, he took took over from JJ Abrams to direct Star Trek: Beyond.
We bring this up because, according to a report from Hollywood industry gossip wizard Jeff Sneider (via The Playlist), Lin is among the directors said to be ‘in contention’ to take over the Spider-Man franchise. The rumour goes that Lin has joined Drew Goddard, who made the cult horror Cabin In The Woods, as a potential director for what we’ll call Spider-Man 4 for now.

Reviews for The Phantom Menace were, it’s fair to say, mixed. Looking back on it, that’s understandable. It’s a mixed film. After a lot of excitement and hype for the return of the game-changing franchise, some anti-climax was inevitable. 133 minutes and countless midi-chlorians later, a sense of disappointment gave way to rage for some.
Attack of the Clones had an improved, if not stellar, critical reception and Revenge of the Sith continued this trend to be recognized as the best of the three. That said, despite the upward trajectory there was a sense that these films would never recover from their initial mauling and that their lasting legacy would be their failure to recapture the magic of the Original Trilogy in a sustained way.

Speed Racer star Emile Hirsch recently reflected on the 2008 sports movie becoming a cult classic years after it flopped at the global box office.
Looking back, Hirsch, who played the title character in Speed Racer, revealed to MovieWeb that he shouldn't have been surprised that the feature-length adaptation wasn't an immediate hit with audiences. "What's interesting about Speed Racer is that the trajectory that it took, weirdly, is similar to the cartoon," he shared. "The cartoon only had like two seasons, maybe three. And that's not very much for a huge children's show. These cartoons go forever. So it had kind of a relatively short run. But over the years, it just gained this cult following."

J.J. Abrams rebooted Star Trek in 2009 with a new USS Enterprise crew and the creation of the Kelvin Timeline. George Kirk, Winona Kirk, and Jaylah are key characters introduced into the franchise by Abrams. Abrams' Star Trek Kelvin-universe movies prioritize character and crew-based tension, with notable character developments and impactful villains.
Star Trek (2009) introduced the much-loved franchise to a new audience with a successful reboot. Director J.J. Abrams’ initial space-faring feature film launched a new, superbly recast Star Trek: The Original Series crew and introduced the anything-goes alternate Kelvin Timeline. Initially introducing origin stories for the movie’s leading characters, James T. When J.J. Abrams' 2009 film "Star Trek" was first announced, it caused something of a fanboy firestorm online. "Star Trek" was largely moribund in the 2000s, presenting the franchise's least popular film, "Star Trek: Nemesis" in 2002, and its least popular series (to date) in "Star Trek: Enterprise." The former only made $67.3 million, and the latter was canceled after four seasons. The world had shifted from gentle stories of futuristic diplomacy to colorful, fantastical post-9/11 revenge fantasies.
Then along came Abrams with his declaration that he'd reboot "Star Trek" with a new cast playing younger, hotter versions of characters Trekkies have loved since the 1960s. His new "Star Trek" was to be supra-high-octane, tripling down on action and drama, and actively eschewing the morality, optimism, and cerebral elements the franchise had previously been known for. Questions immediately began to arise as to whether or not that counted as "proper Star Trek,...

James Gunn teases Justice League Dark by posting a Deadman image on Instagram, fueling fan speculation about a potential new Dcu project. Deadman, a supernatural DC character, may join Justice League Dark in a live-action movie in the future. Gunn's interest in lesser-known DC characters and roots in horror suggest that his probing of Deadman for Dcu purposes is not without significance.

David Robert Mitchell (It Follows) is at the helm of a mysterious new genre movie for Bad Robot and Warner Bros., starring Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathaway. Per Variety, Sundance breakout star Maisy Stella (My Old Ass) has nabbed the third lead role.
Maisy Stella joins previously announced cast members Ewan McGregor (Doctor Sleep) and Anne Hathaway (Colossal).
Plot details remain tightly guarded since the project was announced, but the movie is categorized as a thriller. Considering Bad Robot is behind the Cloverfield films, Overlord, Super 8, and more, it feels safe to presume the untitled project will be a genre thriller of some sort.
Originally reported by Jeff Sneider and John Rocha on their show “The Hot Mic” last year, the mysterious new project is reportedly set in the 1980s… and features dinosaurs?! If so, Hathaway’s turn in Colossal might make her well poised to take on the prehistoric beasts.

Apollo Global Management, a major private-equity firm, has submitted an $11 billion bid to acquire Paramount Pictures and the Paramount TV studios group, according to a published report.
The Wall Street Journal, citing anonymous sources, reported that Apollo Global offered $11 billion for Paramount Global’s film and TV studio business. That would apparently not include CBS, Paramount Global’s cable networks like BET, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and MTV, or the streaming business unit that includes Paramount+ and Pluto TV.
Apollo’s reported offer for Paramount’s studio operations is greater than the market capitalization of Paramount Global in its entirety ($7.3 billion as of March 19). The proposed transaction may include some assumption of Paramount Global’s long-term debt (which stood at $14.6 billion at the end of 2023).
Shares of Paramount Global closed up 11.8% Wednesday on the Journal report, to $12.51/per share, boosting its market cap to nearly $8.7 billion. The stock remains well below its 52-week high of $24/share.

In an interesting turn of events, “Star Wars” creator George Lucas publicly supports Disney CEO Bob Iger and the Walt Disney Company board against the activist investor groups trying to obtain board seats. This is highly ironic given that George Lucas was very vocal about how he felt betrayed by Bob Iger. Iger himself even talked about how Lucas felt betrayed in his book.
Now, George Lucas has seemingly put out this statement saying, “Creating magic is not for amateurs. When I sold Lucasfilm just over a decade ago. Actor Tim Russ humorously explains Star Wars in a video, highlighting the playful rivalry between Star Trek and Star Wars. J.J. Abrams has directed two movies in both the Star Trek and Star Wars franchises, exemplifying the links between the two. Gene Roddenberry and George Lucas shared a mutual admiration, showing the positive impact of the friendly rivalry between the two sci-fi franchises.
An old clip of Star Trek: Voyager's Tim Russ hilariously explaining Star Wars to the uninitiated has resurfaced on social media. Star Trek and Star Wars have always had a friendly rivalry, riffed upon by comedians for decades. The comically exaggerated rivalry is likely rooted in Star Wars and Star Trek being the biggest science fiction franchises. However, there's an affectionate back and forth between both franchises, exemplified by the many connections between them.
The most obvious connection between Star Trek and Star Wars is director J.

J.J. Abrams reinvigorated Star Trek with the Kelvin Universe, introducing an alternate timeline and respectfully preserving the franchise's legacy. The movies offered character origin stories, significant character development across the cast's main USS Enterprise crew, and action-packed drama. The reboot influenced later shows, leading to a new era of "Modern Star Trek."
J.J. Abrams' Star Trek (2009) rebooted the stalled science fiction franchise and cleverly introduced a new alternate timeline as part of Star Trek's multiverse. Establishing the Kelvin Timeline alongside Star Trek's Prime and lesser-seen Mirror Universes, Abrams intelligently sidestepped the issue of inevitable predictability while preserving Star Trek's already established and canonical legacy. Minor changes to the characters and their respective inherent behaviors echoed grander, more-encompassing divergences in the Kelvin Timeline's course, with many of the original facets somewhat reversed. The movies made respectful reference in multiple ways to the franchise's other shows, movies, and series,...

It’s been eight years since the release of the last Star Trek movie, which, believe it or not, is actually the largest gap between movies since the franchise first hit the big screen in 1979. There have been several potential Star Trek movies in the works during those years, but they have either been scrapped or stuck in development hell. We still don’t know exactly what the future will bring, but Paramount apparently has “a plan” for the franchise’s return to theaters.

ScreenRant spoke with Roddenberry Entertainment COO Trevor Roth, who assured fans that there is a plan in the works. While I might be tempted to say that it feels like Paramount is just throwing things at the wall to see what sticks, I would love to see a proper Star Trek movie once again.

Star Trek: The Next Generation and Lost share a connection through actors appearing in both iconic shows. Both series feature characters navigating strange occurrences and mysterious phenomena in their respective universes. From renowned guest stars to memorable roles, these actors brought their talent to both Tng and Lost.
Star Trek: The Next Generation and Lost may not seem to have much in common beyond being science fiction television shows, but several actors appeared in both shows. Following the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the USS Enterprise-d, Tng picked up about a century after the events of Star Trek: The Original Series. Although Tng got off to a bit of a rocky start in its first two seasons, it would go on to produce some of the best science fiction television of all time. Over the course of seven seasons, the Enterprise-d explored the galaxy, encountering numerous strange aliens and unexplainable anomalies.

Shaun and his best mate Ed are in trouble. They’ve discovered two zombies in their garden, and the lumbering flesh-eaters show no signs of stopping. However, Shaun and Ed have found one way of slowing the approach: throwing records.
And so, as the two zombies grow closer, Ed and Shaun rustle through the latter’s collection. “Sign o’ the Times … Purple Rain,” Ed suggests as projectiles, only to have Shaun tell him no. That is until Ed reaches a low point in Prince’s discography, the Batman soundtrack. “Throw it,” Shaun commands, striking a blow against the living dead.
The above scene is just one instance of the humor and horror that director Edgar Wright and his co-writer Simon Pegg bring to the RomZomCom Shaun of the Dead, released twenty years ago. Shaun (Pegg) and Ed (Nick Frost) spend a lot of time discussing their pop-cultural interests, even in the most dire situations.

On Oscar night, details matter. Who are you wearing? What are you nominated for? Who won? Just don’t expect everyone to know the answers.
“What movie won?” Rick Hilton asked as he and wife Kathy Hilton assumed position at the end of a glamorous queue to get into Vanity Fair’s 30th anniversary Oscar party in Beverly Hills on Sunday after 10 p.m. They asked their son, Kathy says, but no clue. Fortunately, a gentleman standing directly in front of the couple had the answer. “It was Oppenheimer,” he said, not mentioning the awkwardness of Al Pacino’s best picture reveal. Some details can be saved for Monday morning. Plus, there are more rapid-fire questions to field.
What movie is that? Is it based on a true story? Who was the emcee?

Daisy Ridley faced a temporary slowdown in job offers after Star Wars, but external factors played a role too. Covid-19 affected Ridley's career in 2020, not just the response to the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Ridley's return to the Star Wars universe is a testament to her portrayal of Rey, despite past challenges.
In a recent interview, Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley explained that after her appearance as Rey Skywalker in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, she wasn't getting many job offers. The Star Wars sequel trilogy is considered controversial, in part because many viewers were highly critical of the direction the movies took with new characters like Rey and fan-favorite mainstays like Luke Skywalker. Now, Ridley is entering a brand-new era of Star Wars in Rey's upcoming Star Wars movie, and her career outside the franchises has grown considerably, but it seems the actress had a few roadblocks at first.

Star Trek: Voyager follows a familiar formula of sci-fi exploration, akin to The Original Series, focusing on episodic tales of unknown alien encounters. Commander Chakotay actor Robert Beltran critiques Voyager's lack of deeper serialization, missing the opportunity for more compelling storytelling. The routine bridge scenes criticized by Beltran are integral to Voyager's comforting appeal, following Star Trek's tradition of solving insurmountable problems.
Star Trek: Voyager's Commander Chakotay actor, Robert Beltran, has strong opinions about the problems with Voyager, but Beltran's issues seem to be rooted in a fundamental misunderstanding of the type of show that Star Trek is in general, and that Voyager is in particular. The inaugural villains, the Ferengi, flopped (to the point actor Armin Shimmerman felt the need to repair their reputation when he returned to play Quark on the spin-off "Deep Space Nine"). So, the writers dug up some old foes with a storied history -- the Romulans. The Romulans returned in the season 1 finale, "The Neutral Zone," and became enduring enemies of the Enterprise-d.
The Romulans were once Vulcans but split off centuries ago after rejecting the path of logic and serenity. As a result, the Romulans share most of their cousins' physical features, such as pointed ears. In "Reunification," a two-part episode in "The Next Generation" season 5, Spock (Leonard Nimoy guest-starring) is working on Romulus to bring the Romulans and his people back together.
However, upon the Romulans' reintroduction in "The Neutral Zone," make-up Michael Westmore gave them some cosmetic surgery,...

Daisy Ridley hasn't read the script for Rey's new Star Wars movie yet but hints at the title New Jedi Order. Filming for Rey's movie was delayed due to the writers' strike but is expected to start early 2025. Rey's new Star Wars movie will explore the post-Skywalker Saga era, potentially including her own Jedi Order.
In a recent interview, Daisy Ridley, who portrayed Jedi Rey Skywalker in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, addresses rumors about Rey's upcoming Star Wars movie. Although it's one of the most exciting projects among Star Wars upcoming movies, little is known about this project beyond that it will be set approximately 15 years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. While there have been a handful of updates on Rey's new Star Wars movie, it seems that even Ridley herself doesn't know much about the plot.

12 2-part episodes of Star Trek: Voyager were feature-length adventures that embraced cinematic storytelling. The series introduced new adversaries like the Borg and the Hirogen through riveting 2-part episodes. Star Trek executive producer Brannon Braga aimed to make Voyager a big, expansive show with "high concept" ideas.
Every 2-part episode of Star Trek: Voyager was "great," says Star Trek executive producer Brannon Braga. Multi-part episodes were nothing new to Star Trek by the time Star Trek: Voyager aired. Star Trek: The Next Generation broke new ground with Tng season 3, episode 26, "The Best of Both Worlds", which aired the first part of a 2-part episode as a season finale cliffhanger, before airing the second half as the next season's premiere episode. Star Trek: Voyager continued the tradition started by Tng with its first cliffhanger ending in Voyager season 2, episode 26, "Basics".
In total, Star Trek: Voyager had twelve 2-part episodes, 4 of which were feature-length episodes,...

While Marvel has won many hearts and box office records, the studio has rarely been the favorite of award shows such as the Oscars and Golden Globes. These awards are mostly reserved for films that go beyond genre tropes and have elements of arthouse. Marvel’s Black Panther is the only film that was nominated for Best Picture.
However, the prestigious Saturn Awards have constantly honored the franchise as they focus on sci-fi, horror, and fantasy genres. Marvel has dominated the Saturn Awards for Best Comic-to-Movie Film category, which is widely regarded as the ‘Oscars for Superheroes’. Ever since it was established in 2013, only one DC film has had the honor of receiving the award, and it is not Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel.

David Carson's 1994 film "Star Trek: Generations" has a farfetched premise, even by Trek's own outlandish standards. It seems there is a mysterious energy ribbon called the Nexus that periodically floats through the galaxy. The Nexus destroys any starships it encounters but also sweeps living beings into its own mysterious pocket dimension. The Nexus' pocket dimension is essentially Heaven, where its victims live out their happiest memories. Time also stands still in the Nexus, allowing its inhabitants to remain there eternally.
The physical existence of Heaven, one might think, would be a heady concept for a humanist franchise like "Star Trek." How would the universe react if Heaven was in a physical location one could visit? One might think there would be a mad dash to get there as soon as possible, rapidly depleting the galaxy's population.
Sadly, "Generations" sidesteps any interesting ideas in favor of a useless "pass the...

Back in 2003, when the original Star Wars trilogy began airing on TV in Chile, broadcasters opted to edit the commercials in instead of cutting to them. The result is a hilarious and beer-filled experience of the iconic trilogy.
One X user first posted the clip which shows ads for “Cerveza Cristal” – a Chilean beer company that has been around since 1850 – edited right into scenes from A New Hope. For longtime fans of the original trilogy, it’s equally bizarre and gut-achingly funny to see scenes that look totally familiar suddenly be interrupted by an ad for Cerveza Cristal. The ads are going viral with fans calling for Lucasfilm to "release the Cerveza Cristal cut."
Around 2003 in Chile, when the original trilogy of Star Wars began airing on television there, they did this funny thing to avoid cutting to commercial breaks. They stitched the commercials into the films themselves. Here is one of them,...
