“You’ve been making women feel bad about themselves since you were invented,” the hip teen Sasha (Ariana Greenblatt) tells the stereotypical Barbie standing before her. “You represent everything wrong with our culture: sexualized capitalism, unrealistic physical ideals.” Stereotypical Barbie is horrified: “No, no, no, you’re describing something stereotypical,” she insists.
Margot Robbie spent much of Barbie proving why the doll she portrayed wasn’t the sexist object that girls like Sasha see. The Aussie actor has a much more difficult task ahead of her if she’s going to do the same thing in her upcoming project Avengelyne. Everything about Avengelyne screams mindless sex and violence—which is why Robbie is the perfect choice. Hold on, let us explain…

Before The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, Six Feet Under, The Wire, or any of the other popular HBO shows, there was Oz. The one-hour drama chronicled the lives of the staff and inmates at the Oswald State Correctional Facility, a maximum security penitentiary home to the most violent offenders in the state. It’s been over twenty years since the series concluded, but creator Tom Fontana is back with an Oz short film starring Lee Tergesen as Tobias Beecher and Dean Winters as Ryan O’Reily.
Titled Zo, the short film actually premiered at the Atx Festival in 2021, but few people were able to see it. Thankfully, Zo will premiere on YouTube on May 1st, giving fans around the world the chance to finally see it. According to Kirk Acevado, who starred in Oz as Miguel Alvarez, it could even lead to a sequel series if the short film gets enough buzz.

A dozen years have gone by since the release of director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 classic The Thing (watch the prequel Here). Looking back at the project now, van Heijningen has some regrets over the way the special effects were handled on the film, and that he was never able to make the sequel they had plans for.
Directed by van Heijningen from a screenplay written by Eric Heisserer and based on the short story Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell (using the pen name Don A. Stuart), The Thing 2011 has the following synopsis: After Norwegian researchers discover an alien ship buried in the ice, paleontologist Kate Lloyd joins the team at the isolated Arctic outpost to investigate. She finds an organism that appears to have perished in the crash eons ago but, in fact, is about to awake. Freed from its icy prison,...

Anyone who knows and loves a theater kid understands that they can be… a little much. To their credit, theater kids accept and embrace this reputation. Both the excessiveness of theater kids and their willingness to celebrate their extremities can be seen in the comedy Theater Camp, directed by Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman. After winning over critics and earning a strong, if limited, return in theaters, Theater Camp has come to Hulu.
Based on a short film that Gordon and Lieberman made with Ben Platt and Noah Galvin, Theater Camp features a group of theater kids trying to save their camp from the founder’s jerky son, who wants to sell it off for something more profitable. Both self-aware and sincere, Theater Camp is a love letter to the over-the-top nerds who can sing every word of A Chorus Line and know that Andrew Rannells was in Street Sharks.

The seven-year-long soap opera about David Ayer and his ‘Suicide Squad’ movie just got a new episode. As we all remember, Ayer wrote and directed the first ‘Suicide Squad’ movie, which was released in 2016 as a part of the original plan for DC Extended Universe. Although the movie achieved great commercial success, it received negative reviews for its screenplay, direction, villains, and action sequences, although Margot Robbie received praise for her portrayal of Harley Quinn.
We all know what happened next after Joss Whedon, with the studio’s blessing, reshot the majority of ‘Justice League’ after Zack Snyder left the project. The butchered movie was released in theaters and turned out to be a box-office disappointment.

It’s a well-documented fact that writer/director David Ayer wasn’t happy with the cut of his DC Comics film adaptation Suicide Squad that Warner Bros. released back in 2016, and he and many DC fans are hoping the “Ayer Cut” will someday be sent out into the world. Now, during a conversation with Jon Bernthal on the podcast Real Ones, Ayer has admitted that the experience of working on Suicide Squad “broke” him.
Ayer told Bernthal (as reported by Variety), “Hollywood, I tell people, is like watching someone you love get f*cked by someone you hate. The big one is Suicide Squad. That shit broke me. That handed me my ass. Come right off (the 2014 war movie) Fury, right? I had the town in my hand — could’ve done anything, and I did do anything. And go on this journey with [Suicide Squad]. Marlowe is a movie directed by Neil Jordan starirng Liam Neeson. With Diane Kruger and Jessica Lange. It is based on a novel by John Banville.
Marlowe is one of those films that probably shouldn’t have been made, and let me explain why: the main character has all the connotations of a classic that has reached a “sacrosanct” status and is probably the one of the most untouchable characters in the history of cinema, then played by the greatest star in the zenith of the golden age the seventh art – Humphrey Bogart.
About the Movie
Whether it was well-made, brilliant, or even if Orson Welles had directed it, I would have reason to be a bit reticent with this film. And, indeed I am, for the obvious reason that it dares revisit an untouchable classic.

[This story contains spoilers to the finale of season two of The Bear.]
Like so many people, The Bear was Molly Gordon’s favorite show of 2022. Unlike most people, she got to join her favorite show when it returned for its sophomore season. Gordon, who played Triple A in Booksmart and starred alongside Rachel Sennott in Shiva Baby, joined the Emmy-winning ensemble series as Carmy’s childhood friend Claire; the two reconnect after a chance meeting in a bodega and as they fall in love, Carmy questions whether he has the capacity to successfully open a restaurant and be happy. “I was very affected by it,” Gordon says of watching the second season for the first time. “I ate it up like candy, even though I was also sobbing. I’m so sad that it’s done, and between this and Succession being over, I don’t really know what to do.”

A new book has shed some light on what went down behind the scenes of ABC’s smash series Lost, with executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse direct targets of what has been described as a “damaging and toxic” culture.
The reports stem from Maureen Ryan’s forthcoming book Burn It Down: Power, Complicity, and a Call for Change in Hollywood, excerpts of which Vanity Fair published on Tuesday. According to the book, Lost was flooded with toxic behavior from core crew members, who made certain thoughts about race and sex clear to others.
Monica Owusu-Breen, who only co-wrote one episode of the third season and described herself as “half-Spanish, half Ghanaian,” said toxic and racist behavior from the likes of Lindelof and Cuse while making Lost slowed down her output. “All I wanted to do was write some really cool episodes of a cool show. Vanity Fair has published an excerpt from a new book examining Hollywood’s corrosive culture rips the lid off “Lost”, revealing a shocking pattern of toxic behaviour behind the scenes of the hit series.
In a chapter from the upcoming book Burn It Down: Power, Complicity, and a Call for Change in Hollywood, Vanity Fair contributor Maureen Ryan spoke with writers and cast members across all six seasons, including cast member Harold Perrineau and writer Monica Owusu-Breen, both of whom are Black.
According to a “Lost” writer, members of the writing staff were instructed to focus on the “hero characters,” who were Locke (Terry O’Quinn), Jack (Matthew Fox), Kate (Evangeline Lilly) and Sawyer (Josh Holloway) — all white characters. When Perrineau questioned his character’s storyline in relation to the white characters, he claimed that a “Lost” producer told him, “Well, this is just how audiences follow stories,” and those characters were “relatable.

A new book by Maureen Ryan that seeks to expose “patterns of harassment and bias in Hollywood” takes aim at the writers room of Lost, where executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse are accused of maintaining a culture of toxicity on the hit ABC drama.
In an excerpt from Burn It Down, Power, Complicity and A Call For Change in Hollywood (out June 6) in Vanity Fair, Ryan interviews several people from the long-running drama that aired from 2004 to 2010. Those who did speak on the record, including writer Monica Owusu-Breen, recalled an environment rife with bullying and inappropriate comments about race.
“All I wanted to do was write some really cool episodes of a cool show. That was an impossibility on that staff,” said Owusu-Breen, who worked on Lost’s third season. “There was no way to navigate that situation. Part of it was they really didn’t like their characters of color.

Explosive ‘Lost’ Expose Details ‘Nakedly Hostile,’ ‘Abusive,’ ‘Racist’ and ‘Sexist’ Work Environment
According to an explosive upcoming book by Maureen Ryan, the behind-the-scenes environment on “Lost” was just as dramatic, toxic and cutthroat as the ABC series itself. Ahead of the release of “Burn It Down,” Vanity Fair shared an excerpt highlighting racist comments and behavior as well as the “abusive” environment of writers, cast and crew, as recounted by those who worked on the show.
While conducting interviews for her book, Ryan kept a word cloud for descriptions of the work environment. The words “cruel, brutal, destructive, racist, sexist, bullying, angry, abusive and hostile” all appeared.

“Lost” co-creator Damon Lindelof is addressing allegations of racism during the six seasons the ABC series ran.

Because did you know that today’s film actually won an Academy Award? “Snowfall” star Damson Idris will appear opposite Brad Pitt in a new Formula One racing film from “Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski. The untitled movie is being made by Apple Original Films and will be produced by Jerry Bruckheimer Films and Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment.
Kosinski will produce the feature alongside seven-time Formula One champion Sir Lewis Hamilton under his Dawn Apollo Films banner, and Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman of Jerry Bruckheimer Films. Ehren Kruger, who did similar honors on “Top Gun: Maverick,” is writing the screenplay.
The racing feature stars Pitt as a former driver who returns to the sport. Idris will play his teammate. Aside from that, engines will be revved, finish lines will be crossed, cars will collide… Ok, we really have no idea what happens on or off the track. There was a time in which actors were unable to alternate between film and TV projects. But as TV has become more cinematic, and blockbuster films have become more serialized, the two art forms have essentially met in the middle. As such, many fans of Michelle Rodriguez might forget she appeared in a key role on the ABC drama Lost. As it turns out, Rodriguez joins much of the show’s fan base in being disappointed with the way it ended.

Liam Neeson has now starred in 100 films, only a quarter of which are "Taken" sequels. I kid, I kid! Even 15 years into his surprising late-career run as an action star (going back to the original "Taken" in 2008), the Irish thespian retains an eclectic body of work under his belt. Since he started acting in the late 1970s, Neeson's starred in high-art dramas, auteur-driven period pieces, raunchy burlesques, pulpy blockbusters, classic literary adaptations, cheeky animated films, and, yes, more action movies about deadly old-timers than you can shake a stick at. Also, he played Jesus once. Twice, if Aslan from "Chronicles of Narnia" counts.
"Marlowe," which officially gives Neeson 100 movies to his name, casts the actor as Raymond Chandler's famous hard-boiled private eye Philip Marlowe in a story based on John Banville's 2014 novel, "The Black-Eyed Blonde." Neil Jordan's new detective movie "Marlowe," starring Liam Neeson, is the director's first since "Greta" in 2018. Jordan may be one of the moodiest filmmakers working, and the smoky mysteries of film noir seem especially suited to his skills. "Marlowe" does indeed feature the famous P.I. created by Raymond Chandler in his 1939 novel "The Big Sleep," but it is not based on any of Chandler's works. Instead, the screenplay, by William Monahan ("The Departed") is based on a spinoff Marlowe novel called "The Black-Eyed Blonde" by John Banville. True to the genre, "Marlowe" is about the eponymous detective's search for the ex-lover of a rich heiress (Diane Kruger). A notable piece of trivia: "Marlowe" constitutes Neeson's 100th official screen credit.
As of this writing, "Marlowe" is not enjoying the best reviews (it currently has a 23 approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes), but fans of film noir would do well to...

It’s hard to believe, but this weekend will be the fourth four-day weekend in the past two months as the nation celebrates Presidents Day, and schools and government workers get another Monday off. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The big movie this weekend, opening in over 4,300 theaters, is Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” starring Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Kathryn Newton, Michelle Pfeiffer, Michael Douglas, Bill Murray and Jonathan Majors as the MCU’s latest big bad, Kang the Conqueror.
The previous Ant-Man movies didn’t do nearly as well as other solo MCU movies from pre-pandemic, maybe because the character wasn’t as popular as Iron Man, Captain America and Thor, but this time around, “Quantumania” is setting up Phase 5, which will lead up to “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” in three years. The key to understanding the new Philip Marlowe film is being aware that it’s not based on an actual novel by Raymond Chandler but a 2014 exercise by Irish mystery writer John Banville to replicate the style of that legendary author. This picture, somewhat of a beguiling genre experiment that seemingly nobody asked for, initially seems like a bad throwback, but in its game of telephone through adaptation ends up, actually, something of a moderately funny joke.
It’s hard to totally pin down Marlowe’s reason for being; a post-modern Irish exile from Hollywood movies (sinister backlot goings-on supporting this reading) or maybe some kind of elaborate tax shelter plot? It’s as if director Neil Jordan and star Liam Neeson committed to making a noir throwback right after L.A. Plot: In 1939 Los Angeles, hard-boiled private detective Philip Marlowe (Liam Neeson) is hired by the daughter (Diane Kruger) of a legendary silent star (Jessica Lange) to find a prop man who went missing. Marlowe quickly finds himself embroiled in a case involving drugs, murder, and secrets that the powers-that-be in Hollywood would like kept secret.
Review: With Marlowe, Liam Neeson finds himself stepping into the shoes of perhaps the most iconic film noir hero of all time. Writer Raymond Chandler’s books were big favourites in Tinseltown in the forties, with Dick Powell (Murder My Sweet), Humphrey Bogart (The Big Sleep) and many more playing Philip Marlowe during the peak noir era. In the seventies neo-noir revival years, the character once again became hip, with Robert Mitchum playing an older Marlowe in Farewell My Lovely and a remake of The Big Sleep. Too earnest to be a parody and lacking the point of view to be revisionism or even homage, “Marlowe” merely cosplays a 1930s detective movie, taking us from two-fisted private dick to icy rich client to corruption among the powerful as though we hadn’t seen all of this countless times before.
With the slightest flick of the wrist, director Neil Jordan and screenwriter William Monahan – adapting an “approved by the estate of Raymond Chandler” novel from 2014 – could have turned this movie into a prolonged “Carol Burnett Show” sketch or, in the other direction, a haunting contemplation of societal rot in 1939 Los Angeles.
Instead, it’s a parade of curvy sedans, snappy fedoras, cigarette lighters and dialogue that only a cast this talented could deliver with a straight face.

Legendary characters don’t die. They keep getting reinvented. If they exist in fiction, new authors come along to create new adventures for them. And if they exist onscreen, you can bet that a remake or reboot will come along every generation or so in hopes of recatching that lightning in a bottle.
And often both happens, as is the case with Philip Marlowe, the iconic hard-boiled detective invented by Raymond Chandler and portrayed onscreen over the decades by actors including Dick Powell, Humphrey Bogart, Robert Montgomery, James Garner, Elliott Gould, Robert Mitchum and probably others I’ve forgotten.
The latest tough guy actor to don the fedora is Liam Neeson, in director Neil Jordan’s new film based on a 2014 novel by John Banville, writing under the name Benjamin Black. Suffice it to say that the results won’t erase anyone’s memories of The Big Sleep or The Long Goodbye.

February might be the shortest month, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be packed. This year brings the expected rom-coms, internationally traveling strippers, and a bear on cocaine. And that’s just on the movie front. There’s plenty to watch on TV, too (though nothing with cocaine bears). But first, the month kicks off with a chiller from M. Night Shyamalan.

Actor Liam Neeson is set to portray the iconic character Philip Marlowe in the upcoming film, Marlowe. But he is hardly the first. Neeson has become known in recent decades for his leading roles in action movies like The Grey and Taken.
In Marlowe, he’ll go noir as he attempts to fill the shoes of one of the most storied private eyes in history: a character who’s been played by some of the biggest actors in Hollywood history.

The period Los Angeles film noir makes a return courtesy of director Neil Jordan. Liam Neeson makes a turn as Raymond Chandler’s famous gumshoe detective, Philip Marlowe, in what initially looks like a slight departure from his second career as an action star. However, this detective can still scrap with the best of Neeson’s other characters with a particular set of skills. The trailer has just been unveiled via the production company Open Road. Neeson is joined by an all-star cast including Diane Kruger, Jessica Lange, Alan Cumming, Danny Huston, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Colm Meaney.

Off to solve another mystery. Open Road Films has revealed an official trailer for a film titled Marlowe, a gripping noir crime thriller set in late 30s Los Angeles. It's opening in US theaters in February after initially premiering at the San Sebastian Film Festival last year in the fall. The classic noir plot follows a brooding, down on his luck detective who is hired to find the ex-lover of a glamorous heiress. He soon discovers that underneath the missing man's disappearance lies a web of corruption that puts him right in the crosshairs of several of the city's richest, and most dangerous constituents. Liam Neeson stars as the detective Philip Marlowe, who's also joined by Diane Kruger, Jessica Lange, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ian Hart, Colm Meaney, Danny Huston, and Alan Cumming. This looks like a clever, captivating noir yarn with an old timey Neeson having fun romping around all the...

The extraordinary saga of Lyra and Will has finally come to an end.
On His Dark Materials Season 3 Episode 7, the Kingdom of Heaven comes to Asriel's Republic, and a great battle ensues.
This finale was an epic of war and love that gave us much-needed, satisfying closure.
Asriel finally admitted he was wrong and realized he would not live to see his glory but had to do it for Lyra.
Mrs. Coulter also knew she would never see her daughter again but understood the part she had to play in the endgame.
The juxtaposition of Mrs. Coulter and Asriel in their meetings with Metatron was so telling of both their characters.
I have devoted my entire life to science and the pursuit of truth. I swore blind that prophecies are merely stories concocted to control the credulous, and yet, here I stand, unable to avoid the prophetic truth in front of me.

When Philip Pullman published The Amber Spyglass in 2000, it was hailed as a landmark of children’s literature. The 500-page tome was the first novel for children to be longlisted for the Booker prize; a remarkable recognition of what the author had achieved with the His Dark Materials trilogy, which ended with that book. Now it arrives on screens as the third and final part of the BBC’s adaptation of the series, complete with metaphysical musings on life and death, heaven and hell.

Much like Philip Pullman's original novel trilogy, "His Dark Materials" started off playing things close to the vest, so far as it concerns Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) and his endgame. Come season 3, however, the show is done hiding Asriel's true mission and its actual plot behind vaguely religious metaphors. Lyra's bad dad is on a mission to literally slay God in a retelling of John Milton's "Paradise Lost" that features angels, weapons capable of cutting the very fabric of reality, and, most importantly of all, talking polar bears.

The stakes have never been higher as we begin the final season of this epic fantasy saga.
On His Dark Materials Season 3 Episode 1, the stage is set for an adventure that will span many worlds.
It has been two years since the cliffhanger ending of Season 2.
When we last saw Lyra, she had been abducted by her mother, Mrs. Coulter. Now, Lyra is being held against her will, drugged.
Mrs. Coulter will never win mother of the year, but she will do all she can to protect her daughter -- and only her daughter -- from the Magisterium.
All these men after you, I tell you, it’ll never change.

Ruth Wilson has always been an indomitable force as Mrs. Coulter. She's a deeply repressed woman. Notice how her daemon cannot (or will not) speak to her.
