Updated: Cecchi Gori, the movie company that once dominated Italy’s film industry and collapsed in the mid 1990s, is being revived by a group of Italian investors that are backing a partial relaunch of the storied brand behind Oscar winners “Life is Beautiful,” “Mediterraneo” and “Il Postino.”

Plans are under way for an ambitious new Italian studio complex comprising nine soundstages and two water tanks to be soon built in the Southern Italian region of Apulia.
The Apulia Studios, as the planned facilities are known, are being launched by Italian entrepreneur Antonio Albanese with two former Apulia Film Commission executives, Silvio Maselli and Daniele Basilio, on board as consultants.
Albanese has acquired a former aquatic theme park on a 450,000-square-meter (122 acre) lot in the province of the port city Taranto. The plan is to convert this space into a sprawling state-of-the-art studio by 2021.
“We saw something unique in this site that stems from the location,” said Basilio, who noted that being on the site of a former theme park is an advantage because the park’s pools that can be converted into water tanks. “Right now anyone who needs to shoot in a water tank in Europe has to go to Malta,...

A classic Italian children’s book from 1945 gets an update in master illustrator Lorenzo Mattotti’s feature debut, “The Bears’ Famous Invasion of Sicily.” Beautifully drawn with bold colors and appealing shapes, the film’s style is classic animation at its best, clear and pleasing, calculated to charm children and adults alike. The revised storyline, however, about how bears and humans clash, make amends, and then realize they’re too different to live together, can lead to unfortunate and inadvertent interpretations neither Mattotti nor the original author Dino Buzzati intended. In addition, the narrative’s pace, whizzing by from one scene to the next, frustrates an adult’s desire to relish the often-striking images, making the film most suitable for kids incapable of critically engaging with metaphor.
“The Bears’ Famous Invasion” first appeared in print toward the end of World War 2, written and illustrated by the multi-talented Buzzati, whose novel...

After some hestitation if Quentin Tarantino would finish Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in time for a Cannes premiere, the festival announced today that his 1969-set film would officially be ready to have its world bow there. Set to screen in 35mm, it clocks in at 2 hours and 45 minutes, but it’s not the longest film added to the competition line-up. The festival will also premiere Abdellatif Kechiche’s sequel Mektoub, My Love: Intermezzo, which runs a whopping four hours.
It’s also not the only Tarantino update we got this week. Speaking to /Film about his re-edited Netflix version of The Hateful Eight, he revealed that his rumored director’s cut of the Django Unchained is a reality and it’s coming sooner than we thought. “I’ve actually cut a director’s cut of Django. Emerging Pictures recently announced “Cinema Made In Italy,” a major new initiative between Istituto Luce- Cinecittà, the Italian Trade Commission and Emerging Pictures that will pro-vide distribution and marketing support to five major Italian films with the goal of broadening the audience for Italian cinema in the United States. Emerging will oversee the initiative and distribute Gianni Amelio’s L’Intrepido, Marco Bellocchio’s Dormant Beauty, Bernardo Bertolucci’s Me And You and Valeria Golino’s Honey in 2014.
These four recent Italian works will receive marketing and distribution support from a fund created by Istituto Luce- Cinecittà and the Italian Trade Commission. The first film in the series was Paolo Sorrentino’s masterful Academy Award nominated The Great Beauty. Since it was released by Janus Films with support from the Cinema Made In Italy program, it has become one of the most acclaimed foreign language films of the year. It also won the Golden Globe, European Film Award and is nominated for the BAFTA and Film Independent Spirit Award for Best Foreign Film.
All five films will receive a nationwide release. Theaters will be announced shortly. Each of the films will have a full marketing and publicity campaign overseen by Emerging Pictures and supported by Istituto Luce-Cinecittà and the Italian Trade Commission.
Ira Deutchman, Managing Partner of Emerging Pictures, said, “Italian cine- ma has always captured the imagination of American audiences since the hey-day of Fellini, Pasolini, Visconti, De Sica and Rossellini. Our goal is to create a marketing and distribution initiative that will allow new Italian films to regularly enter the marketplace with a presence and to help create an ongoing new audience. We’re thrilled to be working with Istituto Luce-Cinecittà and the Italian Trade Commission to create this truly groundbreaking program.”
“Luce Cinecitta' is proud to test this new way to promote Italian cinema abroad,” said Istituto Luce-Cinecitta’ Chief Executive Officer Roberto Cicut- to. “Thanks to the funds provided by the Ministry of Economic Development and The Italian Trade Commission (Agenzia Ice) in addition to those provid- ed by the Ministry of Culture in partnership with Emerging Pictures, we will be able to give the largest theatrical distribution to recent Italian titles direct- ed by very prestigious auteurs. Italian cinema is well known worldwide for its glorious past and for such great contemporary directors as Bertolucci, Bellocchio, Moretti, Sorrentino, Garrone, Amelio and others. This new platform will give our movies the chance to be seen in a wide array of theaters throughout the U.S., and not just in specialized art houses in a few big cities. The recent outstanding success of Sorrentino's ‘Great Beauty,’ a Janus release, with our support, shows there is great potential here for Italian cinema. We look for- ward to increasing the availability of Italian films to our American friends.”
Dr. Carlo Angelo Bocchi, Trade Commissioner, Italian Trade Commission, said, "We have been working in the past two years with all the institutions mentioned by Roberto with two main goals: to get the Italian movie industry as the most important made-in-Italy tool for the commercial promotion of our country in the U.S., to try to reach the widest possible audience for viewing Italian movies. The support of different public institutions was central to building a project that was from the outset commercial: the movie industry is quintessentially important to promoting wine, food, fashion, design, technology, tourism and Italian style, together with the expression of our cultural values, trends and innovations. Italian cinema provides a single, comprehensive tool for achieving that meaningful goal. With ‘The Great Beauty,’ our first film, Cinema Made in Italy makes its debut in 25 cities, in more than 100 theaters in 15 states. This far-reaching exposure is exactly what we were searching for in our partnership with Emerging Pictures, and we are very happy that this first film in our Italian movie series is already appearing throughout the United States.”

★☆☆☆☆ Italian director Gianni Amelio returns to the fray with the hugely disappointing L'intrepido (A Lonely Hero, 2013), a hopelessly drab character study and alleged social satire. Celebrated comic actor Antonio Albanese plays Antonio, a Milanese Jack of all trades who subs for other workers when they need a few hours (or, indeed, a day off). One morning he can be found driving a tram, the next working the fish market, or in construction, or in a machine shop He's a fast learner and his gouty Mafioso fixer keeps the work rolling in - though he isn't quite as quick with paying Antonio his wages.
Antonio is divorced from his wife but has a loving son, Ivo (Gabriele Rendina), a saxophonist who's struggling with his musical career between the conservatory and nightclub gigs. Antonio also connects with a young woman, Lucia (Livia Rossi) - whom he meets in an exam and then...

Director Gianni Amelio introduces the new profession of “replacement,” through the character of Antonio Pane: who does nothing but take the place of someone who has absented himself from his official job. Antonio is content with little, contrarily to his son, a saxophone player who suffers from stage fright and his young friend Lucia who is affected by mal de vivre. Antonio shows that no matter how hard times can affect our lives, it’s important to always look for the silver lining. Actor Antonio Albanese discusses his “intrepid” role: Your character does all it takes to survive, do you think that new generations aren’t ready to do the same? Absolutely, [ Read More ]

Going by the off-putting English title A Lonely Hero, Gianni Amelio’s Intrepido is a likable if mostly local-interest attempt to tackle the unsexy subject of working class unemployment. It marks a rare excursion into quasi-comedy for a usually deadly serious director, whose interests have always gravitated to political topics, from Italy’s Red Brigades (Blow to the Heart, 1982) to modern-day China (The Missing Star, 2006). Casting popular Italo comic Antonio Albanese as an unemployed man who does temp jobs as they arise, Amelio takes his best shot at popularizing his social concerns while showing how the

L’intrepido is the latest project from Italian director Gianni Amelio, which has been selected to compete for the Golden Lion prize this month at the 70th Venice Film Festival. Described as a comedy with a tragic heart, the movie stars Antonio Albanese as a middle-aged unemployed man in Milan, who doggedly tries to get by in an unfeeling city while trying to retain his dignity and his passions. Looks interesting, head inside to check him out… Amelio wrote the screenplay especially for Albanese who, as we said, plays a middle-aged, “substitute” worker living in Milan, who moves with agility, ease and bemusement among a succession...

With the rise of the encroaching Toronto, the domestic competition offered by Rome and a hugely successful Cannes this year, the 70th Venice Film Festival - which begins on 28 August - is facing some pretty stiff competition. The lineup, however, is on the face of it relatively low-key, though there are some very interesting possibilities and potential surprises. Regular attendee George Clooney opens proceedings with Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity, whilst in the main competition lie a mix of old hands - Errol Morris with his Donald Rumsfeld documentary, Hayao Miyazaki's last fable - along with fresh talents such as Kelly Reichardt (Night Moves) and Jonathan Glazer (with his Birth follow-up, Under the Skin).

Following something as successful as Midnight in Paris — which became both a Best Picture nominee as well as the highest-grossing picture of Woody Allen’s career — was never going to be easy. Allen struck gold in that one, finding an ideal surrogate for himself in Owen Wilson and allowing everyone, for the time being, to repress the fact that his recent output has been so erratically scattershot. Unfortunately, his latest Eurotrip, To Rome with Love, brings those memories back in a hurry, with the narrative-vignette approach ultimately revealing a desert-dry uncertainty rather than a purposeful overriding agenda.
Let’s start with the strangest and, even if it doesn’t make good on its promise, most potentially illuminating of these threads. Woody Allen's To Rome with Love is great at moments, good in others and, at times, tedious. In all it's a testament to the lesson that less is more as he's loaded this thing with so many storylines, had the lesser of the bunch been excised he just might have had something to talk about as a solid follow-up to last year's hit and Best Picture nominee, Midnight in Paris.
As the film opens we're introduced to a series of characters beginning with an American tourist (Alison Pill) who falls in love with a Rome native (Flavio Parenti). The two spend a whirlwind summer together and decide to get married. Her parents (Allen and Judy Davis) fly in to meet him and his family and her father, an ex-music producer, takes an interest in his father's (Fabio Armiliato) singing voice.

Alessandra Mastronardi is beaming like a kid on Christmas morning, and can’t stop laughing. But then again, why not? The 26-year-old actress has a lot to be happy about, after all, having snagged a plum role in filmmaker Woody Allen’s latest movie, “To Rome With Love.” She’s presently in Los Angeles, accompanying the movie for its premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival. In it, she plays Milly, a small town girl who, during a trip to Rome, leaves her husband Antonio (Alessandro Tiberi) for a hair appointment, gets lost in the city, and ends up getting romanced by a famous movie star (Antonio Albanese). Cate Blanchett in Joe Wright’s Hanna In the last few weeks, Cate Blanchett’s name has been mentioned in connection to Woody Allen’s next film not to be shot in Copenhagen. According to Forbes.com, Allen has indeed made offers not only to Blanchett, but also to Sally Hawkins, best known for almost getting an Academy Award nomination for her Berlin Film Festival hit Happy-Go-Lucky. The Forbes article adds that "there’s no word at all" on Bradley Cooper. The Hit and Run / The Hangover star had been rumored as another possibility for Allen’s film. Still untitled (as usual), Allen’s next will be shot in San Francisco and New York City. Allen’s latest, To Rome with Love, took in $3.7 million in Italy this past weekend, topping the box-office chart in that country. It opens in the Us on June 22. Roberto Benigni, To Rome with Love According to English-language reports, Italian critics have given a mixed reception to Woody Allen's To Rome with Love (formerly known as Nero Fiddled and Bop Decameron, and currently known as A Roma con amore in Rome itself). They've reportedly complained that writer-director Allen presents a view of Rome and Italians that is both idealized and stereotyped. At the To Rome with Love press conference held earlier today, Allen provided quite a bit of idealization ("Rome is a city unlike any other in the world…"), while one of the film's stars, Roberto Benigni, provided a defense of the filmmaker's portrayals. As an example of how real-life Italians are just like Italians in American movies, Benigni claimed that during the shoot, an ambulance whizzing by came to an abrupt halt. Its occupants got out, asked to pose for pictures with Benigni, and then rushed out...

Woody Allen’s next film, heretofore known as ‘Nero Fiddled’, was officially re-titled yesterday and given a new name that should see it resonate better in its international territories, and so from here on out we’ll know it as ‘To Rome With Love’.
We now have the first eleven images to share with you, some images of the film itself and others including Allen on set, as well as the full cast line-up (which is excellent) and the full soundtrack details (which are just a little bit impeccable).
The romantic-comedy is made up of four vignettes, two of which revolving around American characters and two around Italian characters, with the main cast including the likes of Allen himself, Alec Baldwin, Penélope Cruz, Ellen Page, Jesse Eisenberg, Roberto Benigni, Judy Davis, Greta Gerwig, and Alison Pill.

With a new geographically-specific title and a summer release just announced, Woody Allen's latest Euro-flavored venture, "To Rome With Love," is just around the corner. Looking to replicate the success of "Midnight In Paris," a career-best box office hit that won Allen his first writing Oscar since 1987 for "Hannah And Her Sisters," details of his latest film are being kept under wraps. Luckily, we now have a better look at what's to come as a host of photos from the project have been unveiled.
While there's no sign of young stars Greta Gerwig or Ellen Page amongst the pics, there's certainly no lack of star-power with our first glimpses at Penelope Cruz, Jesse Eisenberg, Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Alison Pill, Judy Davis and even Allen in his first acting role since 2006's "Scoop." The images also feature Allen's army of lesser-known Italian stars including Monica Nappo, Flavio Parenti, Alessandra Mastronardi,...

The production of Woody Allen's »The Bop Decameron« started as planned on July 11 in Rome, Italy. Ellen arrived in the country of pizza, pasta and amore on July 18 and was initially spotted on set towards the end of the week. Most scenes were shot outside at highly frequented locations including: Rome's longest and most popular beach Ostia, the Roma Termini train station, the daily farmer's market of Campo de' Fiori, the Spanish Steps, the Colosseum and the main shopping avenue Via del Corso. It was only a matter of time until the first paparazzi shots turned up on the Internet. I could easily add a hundred of them to the gallery, but I won't do it for the following reasons. It is and has always been the policy of this website to ignore and not repost such photos. Although filming outdoor scenes in Italy's capital is kind of a...

While I have a great appreciation and respect for Woody Allen‘s earlier work, I had stopped paying attention to what he was crafting next after a string of disappointments and half-baked projects. That’s just changed for me, however, as I was lucky enough to see Midnight in Paris on Saturday. Thanks to this viewing, I am now firmly back on his side. If you haven’t checked it out yet, please do so — it’s easily one of his best movies in several years (even if that doesn’t sound like much).

In a press release I just received, the full cast of Woody Allen's upcoming Rome-set feature The Bop Decameron has been revealed. Previously we already learned the cast would include Jesse Eisenberg, Ellen Page, Penelope Cruz, Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Riccardo Scamarcio and would even have a part for Allen himself.
Today we learn the above names have been joined by Judy Davis, Greta Gerwig, Alison Pill, Antonio Albanese, Fabio Armiliata, Alessandra Mastronardi, Ornella Muti, Flavio Parenti and Alessandro Tiberi.
It's exciting to see Gerwig, who has an upcoming role in Whit Stillman's Damsels in Distress, as a member of the cast, she seems like an actress perfectly suited for Allen's films along with the likes of Page and Pill. Of course, Eisenberg is also a bit of a no-brainer and it will be fun to see what kind of dialogue Baldwin will be given the opportunity to chew through.
