The 2023 writer’s strike wreaked havoc on daytime and primetime scripted TV shows. Dool head writer Ron Carlivati promises more drama, more surprises and more romance once his scripts are airing amid the writer’s strike. Keep reading for more about what to expect.
Writer’s Strike Impact On TV
In May 2023, members of the Writers Guild of America went on strike. Many of the scripted shows for the spring TV season had already been written and filmed ahead of the season finales. However, daytime soap operas run year-round. As the strike dragged out, the networks brought in temporary writers, known as “scabs.”
After 148 days days, the strike finally ended in September 2023. While the writers were back in the writing room, many networks were forced to push back their primetime shows until January 2024 due to lack of scripts.
NBC’s Days of Our Lives was among the scripted shows affected by the strike.

Dool fans are bracing themselves for the emotional funeral of Doug Williams after Bill Hayes’ passing. But will the show bring back Doug’s daughter Hope and her beloved Bo for the tribute?
Dool To Mourn Doug Williams, Celebrate Bill Hayes
Daytime television lost one of the greats in early 2024 when actor Bill Hayes passed away at the age of 98. He played Doug Williams on Days Of Our Lives for over 50 years. His real-life wife, Susan Seaforth Hayes, played Julie Williams, Doug’s wife.
The characters became the show’s matriarch and patriarch after the passing of Alice and Tom Horton (Frances Reid and Macdonald Carey.)
Days of Our Lives plans to kill off Doug Williams to pay tribute to both Bill Hayes and the character at the same time. The soap films months in advance, which means the funeral won’t air until December.

After a three-year absence, Melissa Reeves is returning to Dool as Jennifer Rose Horton for a special reason. And she’s not the only alum coming back to Salem. Keep reading for all the details.
Why Melissa Reeves Left Dool
Melissa Reeves joined the NBC soap Days of Our Lives in 1985 as Jennifer Rose Horton. Jennifer eventually paired with Jack (Matthew Ashford) to become one of the mega-popular soap super couples of the decade. Melissa Reeves played the character off-and-on before leaving the show in 2020. She said at the time that she didn’t want to travel from her home in Tennessee to California during the pandemic.
The network brought in soap vet Cady McClain, who famously played Dixie on All My Children. Melissa Reeves did make a brief appearance in 2021, but Cady McClain resumed the role in 2022 for a major storyline involving the death of Jack and Jennifer’s daughter Abigail (Marci Miller.

Longtime “Days of Our Lives” icon Peter Reckell spoke out on Wednesday about the accusations of workplace misconduct against the show’s longtime co-executive producer, Albert Alarr.
“We have learned disturbing news about the environment at [‘Days of Our Lives’],” Reckell wrote on Twitter. “It’s shocking to all who care deeply about the show, it’s [sic] legacy, and the audience who love it so much. With quick resolution, I hope to see a return to its past values of family and respect for all.”
Reckell first joined the soap in 1983, playing Bo Brady, wayward son of the Brady family who returns to the show’s fiction city of Salem after several years away. Alongside co-star Kristian Alfonso, who portrayed Bo’s love interest, Hope, he starred in the show’s defining romantic storyline during the 1980s. It was a busy television season when it came to departures and exits.
We lost many beloved characters in various ways, but a consistent pattern was for those departures to be underwhelming, disappointing, and downright offensive.
Whether the reasonings didn't make sense, the behavior felt "out of character," or the methods lacked originality, our TV Fanatics had much to say about their worst character departures of the 2022-23 season.
So check out our list below, and hit the comments with your reactions!
1. Helen Ghosts Max Via Letter - New Amsterdam It felt like New Amsterdam Season 5, the final season of the series, did everything in its power to assassinate the character of Helen Sharpe, starting with her ghosting Max. Instead of showing up for their wedding, she sent him a "Dear, Max" letter apologizing and saying that she wasn't coming back and couldn't do any of that anymore, leaving him and Luna in the lurch.

Megan wasn't kidding when she said it was time she became a full-fledged Dimera.
The long-presumed-dead former Miss Hathaway is proving herself to be the biggest badass in Salem.
She's the supervillain I didn't know I needed. Too bad certain other villains ruined her triumph on Days of Our Lives during the week of 5-29-23 by wreaking unnecessary havoc elsewhere.
The Dimeras have spawned a few great villains. Stefano is the most infamous, but Andre is a close second, combining class and charm with a cold ruthlessness and determination to get whatever he wants, other people's well-being be damned.
Megan has the same classiness to her. She dresses like a diva, speaks softly but with calculation, and has planned her next fifteen to twenty moves before uttering a word. Like her father, she has a chess player's sense of strategy, making her a formidable opponent.

Days of Our Lives has had a balance problem for a while.
It often seems like there are too many stories and characters, and some get lost in the shuffle. Some characters and storylines dominate available airtime, while others vanish for weeks.
The off-kilter pacing of some stories can kill viewer interest or make fans feel like the writers are playing favorites. The way the Bo storyline played out on Days of Our Lives during the week of 3-27-23 is a great example, as the old-school adventure dominated the days it aired while other stories felt like they were left in the lurch.
The Bo/Hope reunion story was initially pitched as Beyond Salem 3, and it shows. When this story airs, it often takes up most of the hour, leaving little room for stories in Salem proper.
