Hello again, and welcome to the recently resurrected Panel Discussion. I’m Kieran, and every week I’m going to go through some of the best comics of the week to give you an idea what you should pick up that you might have missed. This is another stacked week with some fantastic first issues and great jumping on points for books you might be behind on, so let’s take a look at what’s on offer.
Marvel’s most-recent X-Men relaunch has been a big hit, at least for me, and its the ancillary titles that are really standing out ahead of the main two flagship books. This week’s Iceman #1 by Sina Grace and Alessandro Vitti is a great introduction to a character that people have known all their lives coming to terms with his new status quo. It gets a bit bogged down in X-Men continuity...

I will keep telling you to read John Allison’s comics until either you do so or you stop listening to me entirely. So take that part as read — like Scarygoround and Bad Machinery , Giant Days is a lovely mix of smart dialogue and real characters and quirky situations. Though Giant Days, being set away from Tackleford, those quirky situations are less likely to involve dimensional portals and selkies and alien potato creatures. (At least so far….)
Volume Two finishes up the first term at an unnamed British University for our three main characters — Susan and Daisy and Esther — who have a big formal dance, and a big visit back to Susan’s hometown during the break, and the big finals, and then…um…a big new boyfriend for Esther? (Parallelism can only go so far, it seems.)
These four issues also see the big art hand-off, as original artist...

It has now been two years since Jonathan Glazer unleashed his brain peeling "Under The Skin," and while he hasn't yet mounted a new feature, he has been keeping busy, knocking out some beautiful, strange, and surreal brand identity tags for the U.K.'s Channel 4. And they are big-screen worthy. Read More: Director Jonathan Glazer: His 10 Best Commercials The idea behind the branding relaunch was to take Channel 4's classic block construction logo, reinvent it, with Glazer shooting a variety of landscape and nature-driven sequences (another tradition for the network) to be paired with it. “From the very start, we wanted whatever we did to be real and to be tactile, because if you look at a lot of other branding out there, it’s very shiny and CGI-led," John Allison, head of Channel 4's in-house creative agency 4Creative, told Creative Review. “As a channel and a brand,...

Join us for a rundown of all the biggest comics stories from the past seven days:
Is there a ban on new Spider-Man characters?
Spider-Gwen artist Robbi Rodriguez revealed during an interview with the Superior Spider Talk podcast that there is a "big rule" that his team couldn't create any new characters for their comic - apparently due to Sony controlling the Spider-Man film rights.
Soon enough, he was on Newsarama explaining that it had been a "misunderstanding", presumably in a voice like the brain slug victims in Futurama.
Black Knight
Joining the list of surprising All-New All-Different Marvel solo titles is Black Knight, with Dane Whitman rolling over a region called New Avalon on Weirdworld.
Writer Frank Tieri (New Excalibur) is returning to the character with artist Luca Pizzari (Red Skull).

Giant Days #5
Written by John Allison
Art by Lissa Treiman
Colors by Whitney Cogar
Published by Boom! Studios
It’s Hall Ball (The British university equivalent to prom or homecoming in this story), and Esther, Susan, and Daisy have put on their prettiest dresses and are ready to have fun. But as usual in the topsy turvy world of Giant Days, drama ensues. On the surface, John Allison’s plot seems like soapy melodrama, and on some level it is. But he and artist Lissa Treiman infuse this college slice of life story with a dose of cheeky humor and adorable/hilarious facial expressions. Treiman also unleashes her inner 80s teen film director and draws a nine panel grid dance floor scene that acts as a climax for the issue while giving all the main characters various epiphanies. It’s a real artistic grace note for the series. While this is going on,...

It's been a long Election Night.
From a BBC political editor soldiering on in spite of illness to a political stalwart whose hat became the butt of many a joke, it was quite a surreal evening on all accounts. As always, we at Digital Spy are here to curate everything through the weirdness that was Election Night.
1. Liberal Democrat stalwart Paddy Ashdown and his hat
Forget about Nick Clegg, clearly the Liberal Democrats' loser of the night was party chair Paddy Ashdown. Paddy offered the following gem when presented with disappointing exit poll figures: "If that exit poll is right, I'll eat my hat." Oh Paddy, don't tempt Twitter....

Giant Days #2
Written by John Allison

Published by Boom! Studios
Who knew that a comic about getting the flu could be so fun? Giant Days #2 follows the college adventures of housemates Daisy, Esther, and Susie as they deal with one of the worst things about living away from home: getting sick for the first time. However, writer John Allison and artist Lissa Treiman make this mundane immensely fun and entertaining while adding depth to the main characters and their flaws and foibles. Allison structures the plot nicely as each girl deals with a different variant of the flu that’s been going around, and they get their own subplot before dovetailing towards the end.
Even though Allison has a crackling, witty voice, most of the comedy comes from Lissa Treiman’s exaggerated, occasionally dream-like art. Giant Days #2 can go from Daisy, Esther,...

Channel 4 has its eye set on the future in its new promo for All 4.
Alan Carr, Spencer Matthews and Jon Snow appear in the 60-second futuristic film for the new digital service, which replaces 4oD.
In 2120, Carr remains a Chatty Man presenter for the channel but in alien form, while laboratory-grown Matthews clones appear almost naked in Genetically Engineered in Chelsea.
Snow on the other hand is now merely a head atop spinning ties and is busy presenting Channel 4 News' coverage of a royal wedding where two gay newlyweds share a kiss on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.
Elsewhere, an armour-clad jockey and red-eyed racehorse prepare for the Grand National 2120.
4Creative heads John Allison and Chris Bovill said: "We are continually bombarded with depressing, post-apocalyptic, dystopian visions of the future where we are hunted by machines or probed by aliens.

Channel 4 aims to challenge preconceptions of what constitutes a modern pop artist during the X Factor final this weekend.
The broadcaster will introduce viewers to Viktoria Modesta - a singer and model with a prosthetic limb - during an advert break on the ITV talent series.
An edited version of the lower leg amputee's music video for her track 'Prototype' will air as part of Channel 4's 'Born Risky' brand campaign.
Channel 4 explained: "The promo presents Viktoria, every inch a new contemporary artist... but with a difference that sets her apart from the idealised form of a pop artist. A prosthetic limb.
"It is a difference too far for the music industry to date, and the reason why Channel 4 has given her this important platform."
Modesta added: "For a long time, pop culture closed its doors on me as an amputee and alternative artist. I think people...

This week the Tweeks are giddy over the release of the third volume of John Allison’s Bad Machinery. In Bad Machinery: The Case of the Simple Soul, the kids from Tackleford, England attempt to solve some wacky mysteries (barn fires for the boys and a troll make-over for the girls). Already big fans of the series (watch their review of the 1st two volumes!), Maddy & Anya couldn’t help getting silly over this new release from Oni Press. It’s full of LOLs over trolls.

Today's animated short film is called "It's Payback Time," and it features a society of blob-shaped beings that have been hit with a nightmarish epidemic that is causing them to explode in a mess of blue goo. The characters are terrified beyond belief, and no one knows how to stop it. One thing is for sure is that they really do all deserve to die.
Their world is in the grip of a lethal outbreak. A mysterious blue substance is leading to catastrophic destruction. Who is behind it all?
The short was directed by Chris Bovill and John Allison for Nexus, and it is an ad for UK's arm of Stand Up 2 Cancer, which is a fundraising effort to help find a cure for the disease.

Channel 4 premiered the advert for its Crabbie's Grand National coverage on Friday night (March 21).
The 90-second trail, produced by 4Creative, shows riders battling through woods and clearing burning haystacks, recreating the world's first recorded steeplechase. Watch below:
The action moves through the centuries before ending with jockeys AP McCoy and Richard Johnson heading out to race in the present day.
Filmed over five days, the advert was shot in locations across the UK.
The first recorded steeplechase is reported to have taken place in 1752 as a result of a wager between Cornelius O'Callaghan and Edmund Blake.
James Walker, Channel 4 head of marketing, said: "The Grand National was a great success for us in 2013 and we want to build on The Original Extreme Sport strategy in 2014.
"Last year we focussed on the 'extreme' by showing a street race in Liverpool and this year we are bringing out the 'original'...

Reimagining Hollywood classics – no happy endings allowed
Happy endings are over-rated. Sure, it's nice to walk out of a cinema with a smile on your face and a song in your heart. But isn't it much more fulfilling to stumble out of a cinema shaken to your very core, dumbstruck by the cavalcade of bleak events a film-maker has served up in the name of 'entertainment'? Right?
A bleak ending can so much more memorable than a happy one – and it's not hard to see where Jane Campion's coming from when she says she wishes she'd stuck with her plans to give The Piano a much more downbeat ending than the final version.
With that in mind, we took to Twitter to gather suggestions for other films that could be improved with a bleaker ending. Here's a handful – share yours in the comment thread below, or tweet us @guardianfilm with the hashtag #bleakerendings.

I’m a big comic book fan, but I’m pretty much a mainstream sort of guy, so when I heard that the Nation of Shopkeepers on Cookridge Street would be hosting the 4th Leeds Alternative Comics Fair on Saturday 28th April, I imagined a group of drug addled student types trying to sell badly written, drawn and photocopied “comics” heavily influenced by episodes of The Mighty Boosh and William S Burroughs. I couldn’t have been more wrong!
The Leeds Alternative Comics Fair takes place in the laid back Nation of Shopkeepers, a food serving pub just behind Leeds Art Gallery, so attendees can start or end their visit with a pint and a quirky pub meal. Due to the limited space exhibitors are by invitation only, although there was a communal table where other creators could exhibit their wares in return for helping to man it. Entry was free,...

The mission and purpose of the Dark Bridges Film Festival in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan is a simple one. It brings quality genre fare to a market that has little to no chance of ever seeing any of these films in a theatrical release. Director John Allison and his team of dead sexy programmers have done a dandy job bringing together a lot of festival favourites. The Festival opens with Oscar Nominee for Best Foreign Language Film Bullhead, moody vampire flick Midnight Son, 80s VHS culture homage Manborg, the Canadian Theatrical Premiere of the very Coenesque Aussie flick Crawl, the effed-up hitman flick Kill List, cult car flick Blood Car, the supernatural family drama from Sweden Marianne, the fantastic horror comedy Some Guy Who Kills People, the Canadian cannibal comedy...

I actually went light on the Steve Jobs retweets today. By now everyone knows the news about him resigning as Apple's CEO. However, you may have missed a few of the zingers that got tossed around the feed this morning and last night.

We shouldn't be surprised that comic book creators continue to adore "Captain America: The First Avenger." However, it seems that some of them are having a tough time finding a screening. If you have any tips, you should pass them on to Mr. Bryan Hitch.

The wildest week on the comic book industry calendar is officially underway in San Diego right now. Opening night tweets percolated out of Comic-Con International last night, featuring fear, costumes and even some humility (for charity) from Brian Michael Bendis.

His thoughts, Dan Slott on "Captain America: The First Avenger" and Matt Fraction's space shuttle contemplation ranked atop our list of favorite tweets list after the jump.

If there's one thing that heavy movie-watching Internet users cared about on the Internet yesterday, it was Netflix's announcement that they would be overhauling their payment and service plan models. Costs may go down or up, depending on what your habits are, and Brian Denham and Stephen Colbert expressed their own unique frustrations regarding the changes.
Matt Fraction, meanwhile, experienced some all-caps excitement talking about his hopes for Jason Statham in "Crank 3." You may feel similar adrenaline levels when you see Duncan Fegredo's Hellboy commission that he shared this morning. There's a link below, along with a couple of Google+ assessments and Hellboy drawing advice from none other than Chris Burnham.

Are you getting a little impatient waiting to find out what's up with J.J. Abrams' second "Star Trek" film? Well, Simon Pegg says you need to be patient. He won't say what's up, but he's sure that the gears are busy behind the scenes.
Something you aren't likely to see in theaters, meanwhile (unfortunately, because I'd go see this), is a "Green Lantern" movie starring Chloe Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. I'm not sure this would have to be a Hal Jordan or Guy Gardner story, but if a ring happened to fall into the plot of "Kick-Ass 2," it could be fun. Mintz-Plasse pondered such developments last night. See the retweet for yourself and check out some Harry Potter marketing confusion down below.
I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is the Twitter Report for July 7, 2011.
@simonpegg Please be patient about the next Star Trek. No one's twiddling their thumbs. These things take a little prep.

Gail Simone's been plotting her approach to writing for the Marvel Universe one character at a time this week. Recently, she's sounded off about Thor and Wolverine, and today she questioned why Namor's smell doesn't play a more prominent role in his stories.
Bryan Lee O'Malley, meanwhile, would like someone to map out the X-Mansion in a clear way, and Chris Eliopoulos tried to assess Bristol Palin's income in easy-to-understand terms. Find out what he thinks after the jump, along with what David Mack's been watching while working on a Captain America cover.

I could not be more excited to see this film, the final product of a project that nerds who appreciate Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have been hearing about for years. On purpose I’ve been trying to avoid anything and everything about this movie but it’s been hard because it has been everywhere. An alien, Comic-Con, a road trip, Jason Bateman, the laundry list of good things brewing within this movie’s run time is just scrumptious.
So, if you live in the Phoenix area and can make it to a screening on March 15 then send me your name to Christopher_Stipp@yahoo.com and I’ll get you entered to win a pair of passes to see this before everyone else.

Love was in the air for Valentine's Day this morning, as was the burning wreckage of discussion from last night's Grammy Awards. Brian Michael Bendis and Laurenn McCubbin stuck up for Lady Gaga, while Ryan Stegman laid out his high expectations for Best New Artist nominee Justin Bieber.

Hey! Saskatoon! Yeah you! In the province in the middle of the country there! Whatever plans you have booked for the night of December 11th they are officially cancelled and replaced with a screening of the Australian horror flick The Loved Ones at the Roxy Theatre.
The Dark Bridges Film Festival is presenting this screening and festival founder and director John Allison, writer over at RowThree and a damned good friend of ours here at Twitch, works pretty freaking hard to get good genre cinema to come to your city.
Do not miss this night! I will find you!

Penthouse founder and publisher Bob Guccione may not have been someone that comics creators talk about every day by name, but everyone seemed to know who he was this morning in the Twitter Report feed. Guccione reportedly died of cancer, as did former singer for the Slits Ari Up, who also showed up in today's posting, where they're commemorated by Ande Parks, Chris Onstad and John Allison.
On lighter notes, Apple's press conference yesterday had a lot of people speculating about the company's next operating system. Reactions to the Emmy Awards ceremony last night were enthusiastic and varied in the Twitter Report feed. Warren Ellis wished Jay Leno had had something else to do, while Nathan Fillion wished he could have received a little more attention and Mark Brooks made a "True Blood" discovery.
Big topics in comics were brought up as well, as Eric Powell made a historical claim to using zombies before they were cool, and Christos Gage felt left out when he realized he doesn't have a nemesis in the industry. Find out if you can help him out with his problem below where you'll also find some articulate opinions about "Mad Men" and "Glee."

You know how some people collect Silver Age Superman appearances, rare Alan Moore works or first appearances of Iron Man armors? Well, I collect tweets, and given the runoff and leftovers that were all over my Twitter Report feed after the new "Iron Man 2" trailer premiered Sunday night, it seemed only natural that I should gathering them up like a nicely stacked pile of signed Marvel Masterpieces and show you exactly how the comics industry took to the herald of Jon Favreau's new blockbuster.
As it turns out, Joe Quesada believes it may soil your undergarments, and Brian Michael Bendis enjoys pouring gasoline on the fires of envy that burn inside all of our hearts (because of his advance "Iron Man 2" and "Thor" knowledge). Chris Ryall isn't above complimenting his competitors' new movie, either. Jump on down and you'll find out who loved it, who didn't get it,...

Jon Favreau and Edgar Wright both had their upcoming comic book movies on their minds this morning. Favreau made some calls on "Iron Man 2" special effects, and Wright just wants to see a few good animated Gif files come out of his hard work on "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World."
Elsewhere, Mike Deodato posted a pic of himself hooked up to some tubes. It sounds like he's doing just fine, and I hope that's the case, because I'm really looking forward to "Secret Avengers" in a few months. The post is retweeted after the jump along with a confession by Todd McFarlane, John Allison's thoughts on Michael Chabon's "The Yiddish Policemen's Union" and some thoughts on signed comics.

Do you want to know how stir up some animosity and snark in the comics community? Announce that Alan Moore's "Watchmen" is getting a sequel. Mark Waid, Ande Parks and Brandon Jerwa all had responses to the rumors, and there aren't too many creators out there who seem to be excited about the idea.
And speaking of franchises that went overboard on sequels, some pretty awesome Star Wars homage artwork has been showing up on "Mouse Guard" creator David Petersen's Twitter account, and I highly recommend giving that a look. The links are retweeted after the jump along with Jamal Igle's thoughts on Batman porn, Rob Liefeld's Oscar predictions and the one DC Comics book that Mike Choi wants to draw.

As 2009 draws to a close, it's time to look back on best and brightest comics, comic book movies, comic book swag and, well — everything else that found its way into our bookshelves and longboxes this year. Over the next few days, we'll be rolling out a trio of "Best Of 2009" features, starting with today's list of the best comics in print and digital form released in '09.

'Thor' Meetings, 'Kick-Ass' Chatter, And 'Inglourious Basterds' Screenings In Today's Twitter Report
Brian Michael Bendis reaffirmed his hope for the "Thor" film yesterday with some high expectations coming out of a mystery meeting. Director Jon Favreau, meanwhile, has been getting out more now that shooting for "Iron Man 2" has wrapped, and went out to see "District 9." You can check out his reactions below.
In other comic-based movie news, "Kick-Ass" cast members Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Chloe Moretz exchanged tweets yesterday about their upcoming release based on the Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. series of the same name. Sadly, the Twitter Report feed also picked up a tweet from webcomic marathoner John Allison, who finished drawing the last installment of his long-running series "Scary Go Round."
Check out what they all had to say, who went to a midnight screening of "Inglourious Basterds," and much more. It's in the Twitter Report for August 21, 2009.
@Brianmbendis very very very encouraging Thor movie meeting today.

Thanks to the fine folks at Anchor Bay Canada and Modern Cine, we’ve had five copies of chilling first person horror flick Home Movie to give away and the time has come to announce our winners! And these five people knew it: Chris Jones, Ray Salem, John Allison, Jessica Webster and Kate Wright.

The films of Jim Jarmusch are the type of movies that epitomize the tagline around here, “Strange little films from around the world.” Toying with genre conventions without ever losing site of the characters and blending cross-culture themes with a chameleon yet nevertheless recognizable style, Jarmusch has yet to make a bad film. His latest, The Limits of Control, features regular collaborating actor Isaach De Bankolé as “a mysterious loner, a stranger in the process of completing a criminal job.” And for one reason or another these clips appeared exclusively on the films Facebook page earlier in the weekend.
The first clip is De Bankolé‘s meeting Bill Murray in a sound proof room (“I used my imagination”). The second is De Bankolé not quite following a white-wigged Tilda Swinton when she speaks Spanish references Hitchcock.
The Limits of Control is opening in a couple of the larger American cities on May 1st.

Despite our own mixed review that came in from John Allison at Tiff this year, I'm still looking forward to finally getting a chance to wallow in the period horror of The Burrowers. I highly doubt it'll hit my burb when it's finally released on its limited theatrical run but word is that Lionsgate plans to release it on DVD in April '09.

I've seen the film, and I'm apparently in the minority as I loved it, but anyways, GO HERE for the teaser. Here's John Allison's review from TIFF. "Exploring an abandoned sanatorium while ditching school, two high school burnouts discover a girl strapped to a gurney in a secluded chamber. Debut directors Gadi Harel and Marcel Sarmiento craft a new breed of teen angst drama set against a backdrop of humor black enough to make John Hughes retreat to a fetal state. Both directors will be in attendance to present the film."...

Recently screened at TIFF, and a winner at the Moscow International Film Fest, Javor Gardev's neo-noir flick Zift looks fantastic, not that I've had a chance to see it yet, but our boy John Allison has. In doing a little research on a film called Zincograph, I discovered Gardev is behind this as well as one other film in development which sound like great genre fare. Javor calls Zincograph a "political psycho-thriller." In his own words: "The premise is simple -- what would happen if a maniacal former agent of the communist secret police takes a proactive approach, starts to "recruit" unsuspecting people to spy on each other and thus develops his own network of informants, strictly private and invisible for the institutions? This is a farcically sinister story driven by the workings of the mind of a former agent turned psychopathic schemer, who pulls a roguish act on...
