It took a village to bring Amazon’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” to life and into homes.
The Middle-earth fantasy drama wowed Emmy voters with its craft- work, scoring nominations in main-title design, prosthetic makeup, fantasy/sci-fi costumes, sound editing, special visual effects and original main-title theme music. Set thousands of years before the Third Age of the Peter Jackson-helmed “The Lord of the Rings” film trilogy, the first season introduced viewers to elves, dwarves, orcs and Harfoots (one of three hobbit races) during a time of prosperity and relative peace.
Costume designer Kate Hawley and her team built more than 2,000 outfits. By using vegetable dyes as well as berry stains, she achieved unique shades and tones for her costumes.

James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” swept the 21st annual Ves Awards Wednesday night in an unprecedented wave of dominance in every category, winning nine of its record-breaking 14 nominations, including the top photoreal feature, and the newest category, The Emerging Technology Award, for its innovative water toolset.
Although the prestigious visual effects honorary society has not been a reliable Oscar bellwether in recent years — picking the VFX winner only twice in the last six years — this now looks like a lock for the “Avatar” sequel.
Hosted by Patton Oswalt at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” (from Netflix) — the favorite to win the Best Animated Feature Oscar — won the top animation trophy and took home three awards; Amazon’s “Thirteen Lives” snagged the supporting prize, and Amazon Prime Video’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” grabbed the episodic prize and also took home three awards.

“Avatar: The Way of Water” came out on top at the Visual Effects Society’s 2023 Ves Awards, held Wednesday evening at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
The James Cameron epic set a Ves record this year with 14 nominations in nine different categories, and it set a record for wins by coming out on top in every category in which it was nominated. By contrast, the original 2009 “Avatar” received 10 nominations and won five awards. The previous record for wins by a film was set by “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” at the first Ves Awards in 2003, when it won eight awards. (The show had fewer awards then than it does now.)

Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power blasted off its PR tour at San Diego Comic-Con and it’s winding it down at New York Comic-Con with the streamer dropping a season one finale trailer, that episode dropping on Friday, Oct. 14 at 12 am Edt. A majority of the trailer has footage from the first seven episodes.
Coming away from an episode 7, “The Eye”, which finds the Queen-Regent Míriel blinded, and the Southlands getting erased off the map and renamed Mordor as the orcs settle into their new homeland. Also in Ep. 7, King Durin III steps in between the bromance of Elrond and Durin, given his distrust of elves, declaring that elves won’t be helping the dwarves out with any resources. The trailer teases the arrival of Sauron, the forging of rings, as well as “Mordor will rise, heroes will fall, and all will be revealed...

For the unprecedented VFX demands of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” producer Ron Ames (who oversaw VFX and post-production) devised a new cloud-based processing system, leveraging tech from Amazon to wrangle the work of more than 20 visual effects companies and 1,500 artists around the globe (led by Industrial Light & Magic and Wētā FX). This allowed them to quickly and efficiently handle such epic sequences as the Sundering Seas storm in Episodes 1 and 2 and the cataclysmic destruction at the end of Episode 6.
“We had to build a new industrial system and put together teams that would allow us to do eight hours of content, 70 visual effects,” Ames told IndieWire. “We probably had 9,000 to 9,500 shots at any one time in flow somewhere in the pipeline for a final 6,500 shots.” Managing the daily workflow and shot review was VFX supervisor Jason Smith, who was referred to as “ubervisor” for his unconventional role.

The visual effects process for "Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" is endlessly interesting, and I say this as someone whose typical response to VFX talk is of the "old man yells at clouds" variety. CGI-heavy stories too often look very bad, unreal and distracting, and dull all at once. But so far, that hasn't been the case with "The Rings of Power," and it's clear why: The cast and crew has emphasized again and again in interviews how thoughtful the production's approach to digital effects has been, using practical whenever possible and making sure they have the best technology they can find in order to make the digital aspects of the show look seamless.
The "Rings of Power" effects team also, apparently, did a lot of integration between real shots of on-set stunts and CG scans of actual footage that couldn't be shot simultaneously for reasons of safety or practicality.

You shall not pass ... unless you've seen the latest episode of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power." Spoilers within!
Viewers following along with "The Rings of Power" may have noticed that, like any adaptation, certain liberties have been taken from the J.R.R. Tolkien-authored source material in order to tell a complete and engaging story. Some have become caught up in utterly harmless changes and departures from established lore such as, uh, the mere existence of non-white characters. Other (much more reasonable) fans, however, have taken note of the most intriguing additions -- like the character of Adar and his newly-unveiled scheme, for example -- that help enrich and set this take on Middle-earth apart from any other.
But amid all the epic battle sequences and apocalyptic imagery stuffed into the latest episode of the series, one key creative choice ought not to go overlooked. Thanks to...

It seems like it was just yesterday that the harfoots were singing while they hiked, and today, Mount Doom is exploding in the faces of our elven heroes. No matter how much educated prognostication Tolkein fans did ahead of this week's episode of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power," nothing could've prepared viewers for the last five minutes of "Udûn." That is, of course, by design, as the volcanic explosion that blindsided warrior-mode Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and the people of the village caught in its crosshairs.
It's easy to guess where the writers and filmmakers behind "The Rings of Power" got inspiration for this surprise natural(ish) disaster, yet hearing about it is nonetheless sobering. During an interview with /Film's Vanessa Armstrong, series VFX producer Ron Ames explained that the scene was designed after the explosion at Pompeii, a real-life tragedy that took place in Italy in 79 Ad.

Warning: spoilers ahead for "The Rings of Power" episode 6.
"The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" was all action this week with an episode that saw our Middle-earth heroes engage in not just one major battle, but several. "Udûn" starts with a looming orc army and ends with the epic eruption of Mount Doom, and every moment between brims with either action or the anticipation of action. The episode was directed by Charlotte Brändström, who has previously helmed episodes of "Outlander" and "The Witcher," and it includes some of the show's most impressive visuals and strongest emotional beats to date.
It also, apparently, includes a surprise connection to another major franchise. In an interview with /Film's Vanessa Armstrong, VFX producer Ron Ames revealed that the episode got a boost from an unlikely hero: Indiana Jones.
"In this particular case, everything was completely planned," Ames says of the battle sequences' use of special effects,...

If you've been watching "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power," you know that the show is expansive in scope, and that we see several major areas in Tolkien's world in full glory on screen. Creating these fictional fantastical places is a group effort of several different departments, not least of which is visual effects. "All of it is a construction, carefully crafted between props, set deck, set, and visual effects," explains the series VFX producer Ron Ames in an exclusive interview with /Film. "They're all one thing."
I talked with Ames about his work on the series, particularly about some sequences we see in the latest episode, "Udûn," that are certainly massive in scope. Read on for that discussion though be warned:

The showrunners of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power promise their fantasy drama for Prime Video will feature all new stories and is not “a reboot or a retread” of what J.R.R. Tolkien fans saw in the movies.
“This is a new story for most who are going to be watching it. We weren’t interested in a nostalgia play,” showrunner Patrick McKay said Friday at the TCA summer press tour. “We felt that this show had to earn its place on the start, rise or fall on its own merits. There are different stories that you’ve seen before.”
“This is before Frodo, before the rings, the time during which the rings of power were forged,” showrunner J.D. Payne added.
Premiering September 2, the series is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth — thousands of years before the events of the Lord of the Rings films and novels.

As San Diego Comic-Con gets underway, the fan boy crowd can revel in Amazon Studios confirming what Deadline told you a long time ago: Howard Shore, 3-time Oscar winner for his work on The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, has returned to compose the original main title theme for its blockbuster 465 million series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. At the same time, Emmy-winner Bear McCreary has composed the full episodic series score.
McCreary is known for his world-building scores and use of innovative musical approaches in the worlds of television, film, and video games. He turns that toward a series that Amazon describes as the Second Age of Middle-earth as written in the novels by J.R.R. Tolkien. Over the past year, McCreary has recorded and composed hours of music for the score, weaving together his original themes into a sonic tapestry for a full symphonic orchestra,...

Middle-earth is coming to Amazon Prime Video, and while all seems at peace, a gathering storm threatens to lay it all to waste.
That’s the general vibe for the latest teaser trailer for “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” which the streamer released on Thursday, giving viewers a more detailed look at Prime Video’s highly anticipated series set within J. R. R. Tolkien’s beloved fantasy world.
The two-and-a-half-minute preview focuses primarily on the two characters who also appear in Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” film trilogy from the 2000s: Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Elrond (Robert Aramayo), as they debate Galadriel’s dogged belief that a shadowy enemy believed to be vanquished is still very much a looming threat. As Galadriel is considerably older than Elrond (he eventually marries her daughter), she does not find his assurances that he knows from darkness to be all that comforting.

Amazon now runs through Middle Earth.
The trailer for “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” debuted on Sunday during the Super Bowl, revealing for the first time how the wildly ambitious new series for Amazon Prime Video is bringing the world of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth to life.
The 60-second teaser for the show, set thousands of years before Peter Jackson’s six feature films adapted from Tolkien’s novels, opens with the kind of awestruck, yearning dialogue familiar to anyone who has seen or read either: “Haven’t you ever wondered what else is out there? There’s wonders in this world beyond our wandering. I can feel it!”
The words appear to be spoken by a harfoot — an ancient ancestor of hobbits — played by Markella Kavenagh (“True History of the Kelly Gang”). The rest of the teaser unfurls at a brisk clip, presenting a dizzying procession of images.

One of the biggest productions to hit the U.K. in years is gearing up to film outside London next spring, Variety can reveal.
Season 2 of Amazon Prime Video’s “Lord of the Rings,” which grabbed international headlines when the streaming player moved locations from New Zealand to the U.K., has set its first filming locations. The move — which was a major upset for the New Zealand production sector — is especially momentous given the U.K relocation marks the first time any of the modern “Lord of the Rings” live-action, on-screen projects have been produced outside of New Zealand, including “The Hobbit” trilogy.
Sources close to production say Bray Film Studios and Bovingdon Airfield will be the initial production facilities used to film the big-budget series. Pre-production is set to begin in the second quarter of 2022.

New Zealand Film Commission (Nzfc) CEO David Strong has expressed regret that Amazon Studios’ untitled The Lord of the Rings series will not return to the country to film season two, but remains confident of attracting other international productions.
Amazon announced today that it would relocate filming on the project to the UK as part of a strategy to expand its production footprint and invest in studio space there.
Post-production on season one will continue in Nz through to June 2022, and pre-production on season two will begin concurrently in the UK after January 1.
Strong said while the production would have been welcomed back for season two, its departure opened the door wider to others to come in.
“We’re an easy country to do business in and New Zealanders have a reputation for being highly skilled, innovative and creative,” he said.

The world’s most ambitious corporation is making the world’s biggest TV show. Amazon is hard at work on “The Lord of the Rings,” the series adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendary epic fantasy franchise, which was previously adapted into the equally beloved “Lord of the Rings” film trilogy and the “Hobbit” trilogy, as well as many other adaptations. This will be the first time “Lotr” is being made into an ongoing TV series. It’s going to be a big deal. And by “big deal,” we mean “cost over a billion dollars to make.” Amazon paid $250 million for the rights alone, in a deal the attorney who negotiated it called “the most complicated deal I’ve ever seen.”
The show was announced in 2017. The eight-episode first season is in production now, and the second will start shooting soon after. The series is expected to run for five seasons.

The first season of “Lord of the Rings” will cost Amazon a lot of castar. The retail giant will spend around $465 million to film the first season of its upcoming fantasy drama based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s books.
That figure comes courtesy of New Zealand’s Minister for Economic Development and Tourism Stuart Nash. Amazon is filming the series in the Kiwi country, using the same location as Peter Jackson’s popular film trilogy.
“Amazon is going to spend about (Nz)$650 million in season one alone,” Nash told New Zealand’s “Morning Report,” which translates to roughly $465 million U.S. dollars. That spending amount will trigger a tax rebate of Nz$160 million ($114 million U.S.).
“This is fantastic, it really is,” Nash continued. “This will be the largest television series ever made.”
Amazon declined to comment. An individual with knowledge of the production confirmed that figure is correct.

The upcoming “Lord of the Rings” series at Amazon has unveiled the show’s official synopsis.
The epic series is described as follows:
“Amazon Studios’ forthcoming series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth.

“His Dark Materials” star Morfydd Clark has landed a lead role in Amazon’s upcoming “Lord of the Rings” series.
She joins a cast that includes Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle and Maxim Baldry. This would mark one of the first major characters from the book or film announced for the show.
Amazon declined to comment. Reps for Mawle did not immediately respond to Variety’s request for comment.

Will Poulter will not be appearing in Amazon’s upcoming “Lord of the Rings” series after all, Variety has learned exclusively.
According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, scheduling conflicts will prevent the “Bandersnatch” and “Midsommar” actor from joining the show based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Variety had exclusively reported on Poulter’s involvement with the series back in September. The exact nature of the role Poulter was to play remains a mystery, but the search for a replacement is now underway. Other actors reportedly attached to star in the series are Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle, Maxim Baldry, and Ema Horvath.
