When former HBO executive Kary Antholis convinced veteran British producer Jane Featherstone to board a project about the Chernobyl disaster, the prospect of such an undertaking was far from a “slam dunk.”
“It had to be pushed over the line,” says Featherstone, “and that was with everybody supporting it.” But in the end, the historical drama from “The Last of Us” showrunner Craig Mazin was, as the producer puts it, a “lucky, lucky call” — and one that richly paid off.
The 2019 HBO and Sky miniseries about the 1986 nuclear catastrophe in Ukraine starring Jared Harris and Emily Watson won multiple Emmy and Golden Globe Awards, and put Featherstone’s new venture, Sister Pictures, on the map.
Few in Britain were surprised when, later that year, the production company expanded into a global studio simply titled Sister. Featherstone, who spent the previous 16 years with the Kudos production banner, partnered with Shine Group...

Exclusive: Taron Egerton and the creators behind Apple TV+’s lauded drama Black Bird are re-teaming on crime series Firebug, inspired by events surrounding notorious California arsonist John Leonard Orr.
Black Bird creator Dennis Lehane, star and executive producer Taron Egerton, and executive producers Richard Plepler, Kary Antholis, Bradley Thomas and Imperative Entertainment’s Dan Friedkin will re-team on the Apple Original series.
Written by Lehane and inspired by true events, Firebug will follow a troubled detective and an enigmatic arson investigator (played by Rocketman star Egerton) as they pursue the trails of two serial arsonists.
Former American firefighter Orr was an arson investigator for the Glendale Fire Department in Southern California. Initially hired to understand and track down cases of arson, he became a convicted serial arsonist himself. He was found to be the cause of a spate of high-profile fires across California in the 80s and 90s that...

Spoiler Alert: The following story contains details from Friday’s Black Bird series finale.
When Apple TV+’s six-episode psychological thriller Black Bird reached its conclusion on Friday, one of the criminals at its center was redeemed—the other, condemned.
The episode titled “You Promised” finds drug dealer turned FBI informant Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton) getting increasingly aggressive, in his quest to get answers out of Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser)—the serial confessor revealed to be a serial killer, who won’t reveal where his bodies are buried.
In a bid to get home to his ailing father Big Jim (Ray Liotta), who in this episode is seen suffering a stroke, Jimmy looks to use Larry’s ego against him via a bit of reverse psychology. Larry, he says, is a liar—a teller of tall tales full of rapes and murders that he hasn’t, in fact, committed.

Apple TV+ has released a trailer for its limited series Black Bird, which features Ray Liotta in one of his final roles.
The six-episode drama, which premieres July 8, centers on Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton), the son of a police officer who’s convicted of a crime and sentenced to 10 years in a minimum-security prison. He’s given a choice by prosecutors, however: Serve the full term without possibility of parole or transfer to a maximum-security facility for the criminally insane and befriend a suspected serial killer (Paul Walter Hauser) in hopes of getting him to confess to more crimes.
Liotta, who died in late May at age 67, plays Big Jim Keene, Jimmy’s father. He’s featured at the beginning of the trailer telling his son, “I never wanted this for you. I wanted a totally different life — a steady paycheck, kids, a family.

Gerda Weissmann Klein, who as a teen survived the Holocaust before becoming an author, activist, Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient and subject of a 1995 Oscar-and-Emmy winning film, died yesterday according to that film’s director, Kary Antholis. She was 97.
Born in 1924, Weissmann Klein was sent to Nazi forced-labor camps after the Germans occupied her native Poland. Shuffled through three different camps, she almost died from overwork. As Allied troops advanced, Weissmann Klein was one of 4,000 women sent on a forced death march away from liberation. The group marched through Poland, Germany and what is now the Czech Republic. While she survived the war, both of her parents and her brother died during the Holocaust.
Weissmann Klein was eventually liberated by American forces. She married Kurt Klein, a soldier, and emigrated to the United States. They had three children.

When the initial announcement was made that eight categories would be pre-taped and then edited into the 2022 Oscars broadcast, we all knew the short film categories — Best Documentary Short, Best Live Action Short and Best Animated Short — would be the first on the chopping block. While these projects are the least seen of all the Oscar nominees, the categories have given us some amazing moments over the years. So rather than wallow in our sadness about not seeing these doled out live, let’s take a look back at five of the best speeches from past Best Documentary Short winners. Hopefully the academy realizes soon that the short categories are something special and should be left alone.
As a reminder, the five Best Documentary Short nominees at the 2022 Oscars are: “Audible” (Matt Ogens and Geoff McLean), “Lead Me Home” (Pedro Kos and Jon Shenk), “The Queen of Basketball” (Ben Proudfoot...

We hear that the latest HBO project from The Wire’s EP David Simon and producer George Pelecanos is finally coming together with the premium network recently quietly greenlighting the project and casting already underway. The duo are working on a limited series based on the Random House book We Own This City: A True Story of Crime, Cops and Corruption by investigative journalist Justin Fenton. Simon and Pelecanos are writing and executive producing We Own the City. HBO’s former President of Miniseries Kary Antholis also executive produces through his Crime Story Media. Pelecanos told us back in October 2019 during The Deuce series finale, that their “next project is set in Baltimore, a miniseries for HBO. We rounded up the old (writing) crew from The Wire” and that the new show wasn’t a spinoff of that two-time Emmy-nominated series. We Own the City is set in Baltimore 2015. Riots...

HBO is in development on a limited series based on the third season of Sarah Koenig’s podcast “Serial,” with LeBron James among the executive producers.
The series will examine the criminal justice system at work in Cleveland, Ohio. Following a young cop and the man he’s accused of beating, it illuminates the deeply flawed inner workings of a middle-American courthouse and how the system impacts every person it touches: cops, lawyers and citizens accused of and victimized by crimes.
James is a native of nearby Akron, Ohio, and played 11 seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Shola Amoo will write and direct the series, with Koenig executive producing as well. Other executive producers include Emmanuel Dzotsi and Alissa Shipp of Serial Productions, Maverick Carter, Kary Antholis for Crime Story Media and Eric Oberland and Jamal Henderson from The SpringHill Company.

HBO is developing the third season of the hit podcast “Serial” as a limited series, with LeBron James onboard the project as an executive producer.
The potential series will examine the criminal justice system at work in Cleveland, Ohio. Following a young cop and the man he’s accused of beating, it dives into the inner workings of a middle-American courthouse and how the system impacts every person it touches: cop, lawyer, and citizens accused of and victimized by crimes.
Shola Amoo is attached to write, direct, and executive produce. James will executive produce under his SpringHill Company banner along with Maverick Carter, Jamal Henderson, and Eric Oberland. Sarah Koenig, Emmanuel Dzotsi, and Alissa Shipp of Serial Productions will also executive produce alongside Kary Antholis for Crime Story Media, LLC.
Should the project go to series, it would not be the first time that “Serial” has been brought to HBO.
