After 60 years, Alvin and the Chipmunks are, as their catchy TV theme song perpetually promises, coming on stronger than ever before.
Late last year, the harmonizing rodents with a penchant for hula hoops and harmonicas celebrated their sixth decade since their breakout hit “The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late)” — a novelty tune crafted by the inventive music producer Ross Bagdasarian Sr. — put them on the pop culture map in 1958. Over the years the Chipmunks, as with the greatest pop artists, would successfully reinvent themselves — as animated TV characters, movie stars and masters of virtually every musical genre.
That enviable track record has finally earned a star on the Walk of Fame for Alvin, Simon and Theodore, something that resonates deeply for Ross Bagdasarian Jr. and his wife, Janice Karman, the keepers of the Chipmunks’ creative flame since Bagdasarian Sr.’s death in 1972.

Even as a novelty act, Alvin And The Chipmunks were pretty thin gruel. Created by Armenian-American songwriter (and Rear Window bit player) Ross Bagdasarian under the Anglicized pseudonym “David Seville,” the Chipmunks were a spin-off from Bagdasarian’s first big novelty hit, “Witch Doctor,” which featured Bagdasarian spouting gibberish at double speed in its chorus. After that song reached No. 1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts, Bagdasarian figured he had a winning idea on his hands, and decided to repurpose the song’s high-pitched recording technique from kitschy racial stereotypes to cuddly anthropomorphism. Thus, Alvin, Simon, and Theodore and their manager/dad Dave—all voiced by Bagdasarian—were born.

Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Road Chip is crashing into theaters a little early this Christmas.
Alvin, Simon and Theodore are very pleased to now be opening on December 18th, 2015.
When asked if it concerned them their Road Chip adventure was opening on the same weekend as a certain other giant mega movie, Alvin simply responded, “Do or do not. There is no try.” No one was quite sure what he meant.
In addition to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Universal Pictures’ Sisters will also debut on December 18.
Through a series of misunderstandings, Alvin, Simon and Theodore come to believe that Dave is going to propose to his new girlfriend in Miami…and dump them. They have three days to get to him and stop the proposal, saving themselves not only from losing Dave but possibly from gaining a terrible stepbrother.

Following the exciting presentation at CinemaCon last week, 20th Century Fox released some new details for their upcoming releases. Check out the official synopses along with some photos for all their 2015 and 2016 films.
The highlight of the event was the must-see film of 2015 – Ridley Scott’s The Martian.
During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, Nasa and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold,...

Paris-based brand manager Pgs Entertainment has clinched worldwide media rights, excluding the U.S. and France, for the upcoming Alvinnn!!! and The Chipmunks TV series -- the three critters' first small screen foray in 20 years. The 52-episodes show from husband-wife producing team of Ross Bagdasarian and Janice Karman will be presented for the first time in CGI and feature the Chipettes with all new, original songs. The Bagdasarians -- one of the few remaining independent families of children's program creators -- will voice the characters; Karman will even sing some of the songs. The family that owns rights to Alvin and the Chipmunks has defeated a Fox motion that would have trimmed its lawsuit over the enormously successful Squeakquel. Instead of contracting the claims, a judicial referee is allowing the plaintiff to expand the scope of the lawsuit. Bagdasarian Productions, run by Ross Bagdasarian Jr. (whose father created the franchise in 1958), has been fighting with Fox for years over the hit film which grossed more than $443 million at the box office. The lawsuit covers a lot of ground. Story: Fox Takes Exclusive 'Alvin and the Chipmunks' Merchandise to Walmart Tied to DVD Release For instance,

Hoping for an Alvin and the Chipmunks-free 2015? Well, tough. In accordance with ancient prophecy (and Cartoon Brew), 2015 will see the debut of a brand new CG TV show featuring the brothers Alvin, Simon, and Theodore, currently known by the working title Alvinnn!!! and The Chipmunks.
Seeing a gap in the market where more Chipmunk hi-jinks could be implausibly squeezed, show-creators Ross Bagdasarian Jr. and his wife Janice Karman have been working on the TV show since 2010, when it was known as The Chipmunks and Chipettes. If Alvinnn!!! and The Chipmunks follows the same lines as predecessor The Chipmunks and Chipettes, it would seem that there will be a much-needed expansion of the cast, leading to interesting love triangles, botched drug deals, and maybe a murder or two.
Will 2015 be the year of the TV’s first gay chipmunk?
Given that the movies proved incredibly popular with the public-at-large, if not the critics necessarily,...

You'd think a movie starring Marlon Brando at the height of his young-firebrand sex appeal, written by Nobel laureate John Steinbeck, and directed by the great Elia Kazan, would be better remembered today. Yet "Viva Zapata!", released exactly 60 years ago (on Feburary 7, 1952), is all but regarded as a footnote in the careers of Brando, Steinbeck, and Kazan. That's a shame, since it's at once a terrifically exciting action film, a heroic biopic, and a penetrating political study. Of course, even then, it was an odd one -- a movie about legendary figures in Mexican history portrayed by an almost Mexican-free cast; a movie about a pro-peasant revolutionary hero made at a time of anti-Communist hysteria in Hollywood. That it got made at all was remarkable, given the battles over censorship and casting, not to mention the battles between Brando and co-star Anthony Quinn, whose bitter tension often erupted into elaborate pranks and practical jokes.

David Cross isn’t being sent out to sea without a life raft by the producers of Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, despite his statements in recent interviews in which he has described his experiences while filming the kiddie threequel as “miserable,” “unpleasant,” to downright “awful.” On Monday night, the comic urged Conan O’Brien’s audience not to see the film — which has grossed $112.4 million so far — and crudely disparaged an anonymous producer of the film with a bigoted remark, causing some insiders to speculate he was referring to Janice Karmen or Ross Bagdasarian Jr.

Two days after David Cross's casual "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" smackdown, he took to his Facebook page to apologize.
The star appeared on "Conan" Monday night and explained that filming the third "Chipmunk" movie was "the most miserable experience I've ever had in my professional life." Cross then made an anti-semitic jab at one of the film's producers, describing her as "the personification of what people think about when they think negatively about Jews." (Talk about a banger in the mouth!)
Tail between his legs, Cross issued an apology to "Chipwrecked" producers Janice Karman and Ross Bagdasarian, Jr. -- who, incidentally, is the son of the "Alvin and the Chipmunks" creator.
"To any and all who are aware of my 'Conan' appearance in which I disparaged a particular producer on the movie 'Alvin and the Chipmunks - Chipwrecked,' I would like to clarify the following; the...

From the 1920s to the 1960s there were always novelty songs on the air and in the hit parade such as "Yes! We Have No Bananas" and "Mairzy Doats and Dozy Doats" and "Get Out of Here With Your Boom-Boom" (aka "The Thing"). In the 1980s, Margaret Thatcher picked Lita Roza's 1953 hit "(How Much Is) That Doggie in the Window?" as her all-time favourite single. Such innocent numbers were largely swept away in the 1960s by the second great wave of rock'n'roll.
One of the last novelty successes came when Ross Bagdasarian fiddled around with a tape machine and came up with the "The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)" at Christmas in 1958. Featuring three chirpily rasping woodland creatures subsequently christened Alvin, Simon and Theodore, the record became a massive hit. It launched a major industry involving radio, TV and the cinema and now managed by Bagdasarian's son, Ross.

Ah, what Hollywood will do in the pursuit of family movie box office bucks. The studio executives love pre-sold properties, so for the past several years the rights to the Saturday morning superstars of yesteryear have been scooped up to attract not only the small set, but their parents who have nostalgic memories of wolfing down their sugar-blasted cereals in front of the old, glowing cathode tube babysitter. For most of these trips down memory lane, the classic characters are rendered in CGI alongside live actors, perhaps to set these new efforts apart from their limited cell animation roots. This may have begun with Casper, who frolicked with Christina Ricci and Bill Paxton, and continued with Scooby Doo ( and a CGI Great Dane ), Yogi Bear, this past Summer’s smash The Smurfs, and now the third of the movie series, Alvin And The Chipmunks : Chipwrecked. While they might be...

Janice Karman, writer and daughter-in-law of the characters' late creator, claims 20th Century Fox failed to pay her for work on the screenplay for Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel
Last year's Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel may have had critics chirping with horror, but it was one of the biggest blockbusters of 2009, with a haul of $442m (£291m) worldwide. Now, a firm that represents the family of the series' creator is suing 20th Century Fox for half of all profits from the film, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
In a lawsuit filed at the Us district court in Los Angeles, Bagdasarian Productions says Fox failed to recompense its writer Janice Karman, daughter-in-law of Chipmunks' late creator Ross Bagdasarian, for substantial work she carried out on the screenplay of the second film in the series. Lawyers also claim that the studio breached an agreement to fully exploit commercial tie-ins for the brand.

Lawyers also claim that the studio breached an agreement to fully exploit commercial tie-ins for the brand.

Hard as it may be to believe, someone really wants credit for writing Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. Oh, and half of all profits from the hugely successful film.Bagdasarian Prods, run by the family of the critters’ creator, Ross Bagdasarian, is suing 20th Century Fox over multiple issues, most pointedly that of screenplay work by Janice Karman (who happens to be married to Ross Bagdasarian Jr) and the question of merchandising. The family’s lawsuit claims that Karman wrote a script for the movie, which was then re-written, before Fox brought her in to polish the final version. She’s pointing to several scenes that prove she’s co-owner of the final script and therefore entitled to half of all the profits (not sure quite how they figure that given the usual treatment of writers in Hollywood, but then she is part of the family that owns the rights).Plus,...

Alvin And The Chipmunks follow-up The Squeakquel is at the centre of a legal battle - the family which owns the rights to the franchise is demanding bosses at 20th Century Fox hand over half the profits from the film.
Executives at Bagdasarian Productions, along with writer Janice Karman, allege "substantial copyrighted" portions of a screenplay Karman wrote were used in last year's Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel without permission.
The lawsuit claims Karman, who is married to the son of late Chipmunks creator Ross Bagdasarian, Sr., penned a screenplay for the film and was offered a compensation fee from the studio, which she turned down as insufficient.
The family's complaint reads: "Karman's provision of her screenplay writings to Fox was conditioned upon the payment of adequate compensation for those writings and her attendant services, which Karman never received."
But Fox studio executives are planning to battle the suit, calling it "completely without merit".
A statement from Fox adds, "We look forward to resolving our differences and, in the meantime, we are continuing to move forward with this franchise."
The plaintiffs want Karman to be made a co-owner of the script, and argue she should receive half of all profits "attributable to The Squeakquel's screenplay". The animated movie raked in more than $442 million (£295 million) at the worldwide box office, reports Reuters.

Since they were created in 1958 by actor/songwriter Ross Bagdasarian, Sr, Alvin and the Chipmunks have endured as a beloved mainstay of pop culture. And even after decades of record sales and a hit Saturday morning cartoon in the '80s, the anthropomorphic trio of Alvin, Simon, and Theodore show no signs of slowing down. 50 years after their inception, the characters are as popular as ever: their 2007 foray into live action film impressively hauled in over $360 million worldwide, and their 2009 follow-up Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, which re-introduced the Chipmunks' female counterparts, the Chipettes, and thrust the furry brothers into the unfamiliar landscape of high school, eclipsed that total by surpassing $440 million.

An Education: "The dilemma at the center of Lone Scherfig's British coming-of-age drama, An Education (2009), is quite simple. Jenny (Carey Mulligan) is an attractive, incredibly smart, and witty 16-year-old growing up in a drab suburb of London in 1961. Judging from the lifestyles of the female role models around her, her future can be narrowed down to two options: housewife or schoolmarm. In order to meet the requirements of one of those employment opportunities, Jenny's caring but overly concerned parents (Alfred Molina and Cara Seymour) and school teacher (Olivia Williams) forcefully suggest an education at Oxford. In order to market herself as a valuable candidate, Jenny must ace English, Latin, French (hence the title), and show cultural breadth (her "hobby" is the cello). Yet, if all goes according to plan, Jenny will meet a similarly cultured wealthy man and will no longer need to do any of those things.

If Alvin and the Chipmunks was, as I stated in 2007, "inevitable," then its $217 million domestic gross ($360 million worldwide) firmly established that a sequel (which I refuse to refer to by its "proper" name) was as unavoidable as catching rigor mortis from tap dancing in heavy traffic. In this second feature film, the three rodents of doom--Alvin (Justin Long), Simon (Matthew Gray Gubler), and Theodore (Jesse McCartney)--are back to trip the light fantastic upon our own rotting corpses. This time around, though, Ross Bagdasarian Jr. is not merely content to drag his father's creations into CGI hell, but also enlists the Chipettes (created by Janice Karman) to up the annoyance factor. Parents will be relieved to know that, in the sequel, nobody eats anyone else's poop, but there is a fetching dutch oven joke and plenty of butt references to feed those with bodily function fetishes. However, the undeniable "zip...

Alvin and the Chipmunks 2: The Squeakquel is the second installment in the “Chipmunks” franchise. This movie hits it’s target market right where they intended, but, grown ups may not be so entertained.
When we catch up with our favorite talking rodents they are traveling the world on tour. Alvin, voiced by Justin Long, is the center of his own universe. While Simon, voiced by Matthew Gray Gubler, and Theodore, voiced by Jesse McCartney, are happy in the background playing the teammate’s roles. Dave, played by Jason Lee, is at his wits end with Alvin and is trying to calm down his showboating when he’s thrown across the stage and seriously injured.
Having to rest, Dave plans for his boys to go home and be taken care of by his aunt. While Dave rests the boys are set to lead a normal life that includes going to school…...

Just in time for the holidays comes the latest animated movie featuring the furriest pop sensations of the last 50 years, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. Based on characters created by Ross Bagdasarian, Sr. in 1958, the singing group consists of three chipmunk brothers: Alvin, the lead of the group and the head troublemaker; Simon, the bespectacled nerdy intellectual; and Theodore, the chubby and gullible brother. The group is managed by Dave Seville, who also acts as a father figure to the young chipmunks.
In Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, an unfortunate accident leaves Dave(Jason Lee) laid up in Paris, so Alvin (Justin Long), Simon (Matthew Gray Gubler) and Theodore (Jesse McCartney) are left in the care of Dave Seville's twenty-something gamer nephew Toby (Zachary Levi).

"Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel" will see the harmony singing chipmunks going to school and trouble coming in the form of the Chipettes. Talking to MTV News on Wednesday, November 12, co-producer Ross Bagdasarian Jr. reveals that the boys will get one interesting "out of water" experience. "The boys will wind up going to school for the first time," so he says.
Admitting that the sequel will present a different part of the boys, the son of the man who created the famous singing chipmunks further adds on what the boys will be dealing with in school. "They go to a combined middle school and high school, so there's all kinds of [human] kids around them," he explains. Jason Lee has signed on to star in Fox 2000 Pictures and 20th Century Fox Animation's live-action/CGI animated Alvin and the Chipmunks. Lee will play the Chipmunks' dad, Dave Seville, while chipmunks Alvin, Simon and Theodore will be computer generated.
The project, one that has long been gestating within Fox's ranks, marks the first to move forward under the leadership of Fox Animation's new head, Vanessa Morrison. The studio has set a Dec. 14 release date.
Tim Hill, who directed Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties for Fox, will helm the project, based on a screenplay from veteran TV writer Jon Vitti. Alvin enters production at month's end.
Alvin will center on Seville and the chipmunks, focusing on the trio's origins as singing sensations. Janice Karman and Ross Bagdasarian Jr., the son of Alvin creator Ross Bagdasarian Sr., will produce. Karen Rosenfelt and Michele Imperato Stabile will executive produce.
Erin Cohen will oversee for Fox 2000. John Cohen, who originally brought the project into Fox Animation in 2004, will supervise for Fox Animation.

Hard as it may be to believe, those cute little singing rodents known as The Chipmunks just keep coming back. Soon to celebrate their 50th anniversary, Alvin, Simon and Theodore are heading for their biggest project yet.
Alvin and his brothers debuted back in 1958 on novelty records and are the creation of singer/songwriter and sometime actor (the frustrated songwriter in Rear Window) Ross Bagdasarian. Bagdasarian played the chipmunks' father figure Dave Seville, as well as voiced the three chipmunks via sped-up audio. (Incidentally, Alvin and brothers are actually named after the executives of the group's original record label, Liberty Records.)
The Chipmunks won two Grammy Awards (for Engineering) and had several hit songs including the chart-topping The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late). When Bagdasarian died of a heart attack in 1972, son Ross Jr. and daughter-in-law Janice Karman took over the furry singers.

Alvin and the Chipmunks might be singing their famous tunes on the big screen very soon. Fox 2000, 20th Century Fox Animation and Bagdasarian Prods. have teamed to develop a live-action/CGI feature film based on the popular characters, which have appeared on the radio, the small screen and numerous albums. The Fox divisions acquired the feature film rights from the estate of Ross Bagdasarian Sr., who created Alvin and the Chipmunks in 1958. His son, Ross Bagdasarian Jr., and Janice Karman will produce. A writer and director are being sought to bring the property to life onscreen. Similar to what the studio recently did with the summer release Garfield: The Movie, the role of Dave Seville, the Chipmunks' adoptive father and musical coach, will be live-action, with the Chipmunks -- Alvin, Simon and Theodore -- to be computer-animated.
