There have been numerous medical dramas on television, and 10 years ago, on May 27, 2014, The Night Shift joined that list. The NBC drama, with a cast including Eoin Macken, Jill Flint, Ken Leung, Brendan Fehr, Robert Bailey, Jr., Jeananne Goossen, and Scott Wolf, ran four seasons and for three of them was a welcome addition to the summer lineup (the second aired in the spring). Created by Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah, the drama followed the lives of the staff who work the late night shift in the emergency room at San Antonio Memorial Hospital, and according to Macken, who was last seen on La Brea (which ended after three seasons on NBC), that’s not the only thing that made it stand out. “What Gabe and Jeff did was everyone that came onto that show in any capacity in every episode they knew or worked with usually, or if there...

Henry Selick's 2009 film "Coraline" was unique in the history of animation in that it was the first stop-motion feature to use 3-D printers to construct its maquettes. For Selick's 1993 hit "The Nightmare Before Christmas," each character's individual face had to be hand-sculpted separately, requiring boxes and boxes of various Jack Skellington heads. 3-D printing for "Coraline" sped up the process and allowed the animators a wider variety of faces for the titular bratty girl and the terrifying adults in her life.
The story of "Coraline" was taken from Neil Gaiman's 2002 children's horror novel, itself heavily cribbing from Clive Barker's 1992 novel "The Thief of Always." In the film, Coraline (Dakota Fanning) moves with her parents to a remote house out in the middle of the woods. Coraline makes no mystery of how much she hates the move, how...

You never know where footage will be found; and this time around, it’s hitting Malibu, California – well, some spooky caves on the outskirts of town, at least. The upcoming Malibu Horror Story has gotten its first trailer, with a release date set for October 20th.
The trailer sets up some standard tropes such as mysterious markings on rocks and forbidden entryways that we all know will only bring about trouble (have these guys not seen The Descent?) before showing that Malibu Horror Story will try to play with the found footage subgenre by bouncing around in the timeline. As the vigils and searches continue, we’ll also find out exactly what happened to the high schoolers as their night wore on…

This Is Us star Chris Sullivan will not be returning to broadcast television just yet as ABC has passed on The Son in Law, a comedy pilot starring the Emmy-nominated actor. According to TV Line, the network will not be moving forward with Sullivan’s comedy pilot, which was set to revolve around Jake (Sullivan), a divorced, working-class plumbing contractor, and his 21-year-old daughter. The show would see Jake finding new love with a woman named Asha, who is basically South Asian royalty — but he would find resistance from Asha’s controlling parents, who do not approve of the match. In addition to Sullivan, the cast also included Reema Sampat, Meera Simhan, Evangeline Young, Anupam Kher, and Robert Bailey Jr. The pilot was written and executive produced by Ajay Saghal, alongside Jake Kasdan and Melvin Mar, who also served as exec producers. Adding to the bad news, ABC has also...

ABC has opted not to move forward with two of its remaining pilots.
The single-camera comedy “The Son-in-Law” and an untitled drama series from Kay Oyegun have both been scrapped at the broadcast network. Both were picked up as part of ABC’s initial pilot season slate and were in contention for midseason orders as part of ABC’s year-round development cycle. Both were also produced by 20th Television.
With the news, ABC has now only ordered one new comedy to series for the 2022-2023 broadcast season. That is the single-cam “Not Dead Yet” starring Gina Rodriguez, which was ordered to series in May.
On the drama side, ABC is still considering the espionage series “The Company You Keep” starring Milo Ventimiglia as well as “Will Trent,” based on the novel series by Karin Slaughter.

When the pandemic hit it was Steven Soderberg’s Contagion rather than M Night Shyamalan’s The Happening that people wanted to revisit. Perhaps Mark Wahlberg running away from the wind wasn’t the vibe people were looking for. Revisiting this much maligned but secretly wonderful curio in light of where we are in the world now, though, throws up some interesting parallels. The big difference between the way the characters in The Happening dealt with their pandemic and what’s going on in the world now is lockdown. What the characters battling the airborne infection in The Happening should have done is self isolate….
M Night Shyamalan’s eco-horror was released in 2008 after his declining run of hits, which began with The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs (pretty well liked), The Village (opinion is divided) and The Lady in the Water (bad).

There are fewer “Lost”-alikes nowadays than there used to be: Given how frequently hour-long puzzle-box shows seeking to draft off of the ABC smash’s success were met with utter indifference, the networks, give or take an occasional attempt like NBC’s “Manifest” moved on to attempting to copy the “This Is Us” formula. So it’s actually a bit charming to see “Emergence,” a new network show that puts forward a big supernatural-adjacent mystery expanding outward into potential conspiracy or mysticism. It’s the sort of show that they don’t much make anymore.

This is not your typical drama.
Emergence, starring Allison Tolman, is a brand new genre thriller which has had a long and winding road to the screen.
It started its life as a pilot at NBC but was produced by ABC Studios. While NBC apparently liked the show, it never made the cut for a series order.
That's when ABC stepped in, handed out a series order, and even put it on the fall schedule.
It's amazing how the TV industry works, right!

NBC executives explained how their Allison Tolman drama pilot, “Emergence,” ended up being ordered to series ABC.
“We had an abundance of choice,” Paul Telegdy, co-chairman, NBC Entertainment, told TheWrap during a conference call with reporters on Sunday. “‘Emergence’ is a great show, but one that we couldn’t find a home for at NBC. We’re delighted it’s found a future at ABC.”
“Emergence” was surprisingly picked up to series by ABC on Saturday, joining the network’s other new series “The Baker and The Beauty,” “For Life,” “Mixed-ish,” “United We Fall” and the Untitled Cobie Smulders Project. The drama, which comes from ABC Studios, stars Tolman, Alexa Swinton, Ashley Aufderheide, Robert Bailey Jr., Zabryna Guevara, Donald Faison and Clancy Brown. It is from Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, with Paul McGuigan on board as director.

In one of the biggest twists this upfront season, NBC’s genre thriller drama pilot Emergence, starring Allison Tolman, was picked up to series by rival network ABC.
During the NBC upfronts press call Sunday, the network’s executives were asked about the decision not to go forward with the project, produced by ABC Studios, and what they thought of ABC’s move to pick it up to series.
“We had an abundance of choices,” NBC Entertainment co-chairman Paul Telegdy said. “Emergence is a great show, one that we couldn’t find a home for on NBC. We are delighted it has found a future on ABC.”
This is the second consecutive year an NBC drama pilot passed on by the network has landed a series pickup elsewhere. Last year, it was The Bad Boys offshoot L.A.’s Finest, which is launching as the first Spectrum original series this week.

The drama pilot “Emergence” has been ordered to series at ABC, though the project had originally been developed at NBC.
The series, which hails from ABC Studios, centers around a police chief (Allison Tolman) who takes in a young child (Alexa Swinton) that she finds near the site of a mysterious accident who has no memory of what has happened. The investigation draws her into a conspiracy larger than she ever imagined, and the child’s identity is at the center of it all.
In addition to Tolman and Swinton, the series also stars Owain Yeoman, Ashley Aufderheide, Robert Bailey Jr., Zabryna Guevara, Donald Faison, and Clancy Brown. Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters will write and executive produce. Paul McGuigan directed the pilot and is an executive producer.
Sources say that ABC was somewhat dissatisfied with its own development slate this year and moved on “Emergence” after NBC passed on the project.
