When his former
Jefferson Airplane band mates
Paul Kantner and
Grace Slick formed
Jefferson Starship in 1973, he wasn't originally part of the reunion. However, he was invited to sing lead vocals on the song "Caroline", which was on the group's debut album "Dragon Fly", after he wrote lyrics to go along with the instrumental tracks Kantner had written. This set the stage for him to join the band a year later to record the album "Red Octopus", which became the first number one album for either Jefferson Airplane or Jefferson Starship.
