Rupert Grint in Servant
Tony Basgallop’s Apple TV+ show, Servant, scribed by Shyamalan’s daughter, Ishana Night Shyamalan alongside Nina Braddock and Basgallop has been a source of inspiration for Trap. Servant starring Harry Potter actor Rupert Grint, has enjoyed huge critical accolades and even earned praise from acclaimed director, Guillermo del Toro.

M. Night Shyamalan is not in disagreement about the fact that he derived the inspiration for Trap from the Apple TV+ show Servant. Shyamalan directed 5 of 40 episodes of the show including the pilot, while his daughter, Ishana Night Shyamalan directed 6 episodes.

Ted Lasso may have as many Emmys as there are AFC Richmond players in a match, but almost four years into the life of Apple TV+, it’s far from the only reason to visit the streamer. Since its launch in 2019, Apple has paid out for starry collaborations with big names in Hollywood both behind and in front of the camera, many of which have now – creatively at least – paid off.
It hasn’t been a straight ascent, but by sticking with the majority of their original shows over multiple season renewals rather than the slash ‘n’ burn approach elsewhere, Apple TV+ has established a healthy slate of acclaimed originals. There’s weird horror Servant, hard sci-fi Foundation, eerie drama Severance, spy thriller Slow Horses, plus real-life dramatisations, and a lot of very decent comedy. We pick our recommendations below.

Exclusive: Following the success of Netflix’s Wednesday and Oscar contender Elvis, Andrew Mittman has renewed his overall deal with MGM Television.
Mittman, via his 1.21 label, has re-upped his exclusive deal with the studio, fresh from the launch of Amazon’s Christoph Waltz-fronted series The Consultant.
It’s three years since Mittman struck his first deal with MGM Television.
Last year, he promoted Kai Dolbashian to Head of Development at the company.
It’s a sign of intent for MGM, which was restructured in November after its acquisition by Amazon, in a move that saw Lindsay Sloane become Head of MGM Scripted Television and new roles for Rola Bauer as President of International TV.
Mittman and 1.21 just launched The Consultant on Amazon last month; the series, which was created by Tony Basgallop, stars Waltz as a mysterious consultant who comes to the rescue of a mobile gaming company after...

If you currently work from home and have anxiety about going to the office to work, “The Consultant,” a new series on Prime Video, will make you rethink your life choices. Based on the best-selling horror novel by Bentley Little, the eight-episode series stars Christoph Waltz as Regus Patoff, a business consultant with a sadistic method of restructuring businesses.
Created by Tony Basgallop (“Servant”) and executive produced and directed by Matt Shakman (“WandaVision”), the series is more of an interpretation of Little’s book rather than a direct adaptation. As a result, it leans more into sinister themes of the lengths people will go to for money in corporate America.
Waltz’s chilling performance highlights this series as he embodies Patoff, a mild-mannered boss who never raises his voice but can manipulate those around him to do unspeakable things.

His first series since Apple TV+’s Servant, Tony Basgallop’s Amazon show The Consultant confirms his place as a writer with no interest in choosing a lane.
Like Servant, The Consultant is a chamber piece of escalating creepiness — part horror, part satire — capable of occasionally getting under your skin and occasionally making you laugh, but never really committing to one tone or narrative hook for very long. And The Consultant is, like Servant, a format-defying half-hour dramedy that, ideally, could have been a feature or possibly even an episode of a suspense anthology; it’s perplexingly rushed at times and oppressively elongated at others.
The hook of The Consultant is sure to be Christoph Waltz, delivering a compulsively watchable performance that falls right into the Oscar winner’s comfort zone of seductive weirdness that is alternately reptilian and lupine. It’s to Waltz’s credit that the sort of...

The Consultant premieres on Prime Video on Friday, February 24.
Based on Bentley Little's book by the same name, The Consultant follows what happens when a consultant is hired to right the corporate ship of a well-respected tech startup.
Tony Basgallop, who is best known to readers as the creator and showrunner for the Apple TV+ series Servant, has worked magic to bring The Consultant to life.
Christoph Waltz stars as the titular character, a man who is what he seems, although seeing what he is takes everyone around him by surprise.
Those familiar with Little's work will recognize the uneasy feeling Regus Patoff brings to the workplace, which has a similar aura to Basgallop's work on Servant. You know something's not quite right, but you don't know what it is.
We had the chance to jump on the phone with Basgallop to talk about the series and his process...

Only one of his short stories have been adapted on screen (“The Washingtonians” was an episode of the anthology series Masters of Horror). Prime Video has become one of the more underrated streamers when compared to Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, and its other competitors. While Amazon’s streamer boasts big titles like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and The Boys, it does, however, lack the abundance of content that the other major players in the streaming game possess. Prime Video isn’t lacking in originality, though. When it does release a new series, you can expect it will typically be able to carve out a niche in its genre of choice.
Enter the much-anticipated Christoph Waltz vehicle, The Consultant. Based on the novel by acclaimed horror writer Bentley Little, this eight-episode first season created by Tony Basgallop (Servant) has largely been marketed as a black comedy by Amazon and various media outlets in the months before release. Few actors have become as synonymous with malicious businesspeople as Christoph Waltz. After his Oscar-winning turns in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained, Waltz has played dastardly villains of all sorts in everything from James Bond films to the recent small-screen remake of The Most Dangerous Game. In a slightly different role, Waltz portrays a different sort of bad guy in the new Prime Video series The Consultant. Based on the novel by Bentley Little, The Consultant is a series ideally suited for Waltz’s signature style while also blending elements from the other creative members of the team on this project.

Rupert Grint is an English actor best known for his portrayal of the lovable wizard, Ron Weasley, in the Harry Potter movie franchise. Currently, he’s starring in the Apple TV+ drama-thriller Servant.
In the series, Grint plays a Philadelphia man named Julian who struggles with substance abuse and his relationship with his sister, brother-in-law, and nephew. Julian sounds authentically American on the hit show. But in a recent interview, Grint revealed that there is one word he still struggles with when trying to perfect his American accent.

Did Christoph Waltz freak you out in "Inglorious Basterds?" He has the creepy smile thing absolutely mastered, and we're about to see it again in the upcoming Prime Video series, "The Consultant." In the show, Waltz plays Regus Patoff, a consultant who comes into a huge mobile video game company called CompWare after the CEO shoots himself. He's not exactly a comforting presence, sniffing employees to decide if they stay at the company and trimming his nose hairs in the office. I apologize if you were eating when you read that.
The earlier trailer was upsetting enough, but this one is even more unnerving. The show was created by Tony Basgallop and is directed by Matt Shakman. Shakman's style is all over this trailer, which feels at points as though you're supposed to laugh when things are looking rather murder-y. It's like the camera has very good comic timing yet...

In “The Consultant,” Christoph Waltz’s Regus Patoff is a pandemic-era corporate worker’s nightmare.
“For those who work remotely, you have one hour to get here, or you’ll be terminated,” he says in a trailer for the dark comedy-thriller series exclusively obtained by Variety.
The series, which premieres on Feb. 24, explores the sinister relationship between boss and employee. When Patoff is hired as a consultant to improve the business at the app-based gaming company CompWare, employees experience new demands and challenges that put everything into question, including their lives. The cast also includes Nat Wolff as Craig, Brittany O’Grady as Elaine and Aimee Carrero as Patti.

This week, M. Night Shyamalan returns to the big screen with "Knock at the Cabin," a one-location home-invasion thriller with an apocalyptic twist that is sure to divide audiences. Despite all the (sometimes toxic) criticism lodged at the filmmaker throughout the years, he still enjoys taking large risks, subverting expectations, and making films for himself rather than corporate machines. Shyamalan mostly works with original screenplays he's written himself and has lately even self-financed his films not just out of necessity, but also to allow as much creative freedom as possible.
"Knock at the Cabin" differs from "Old" and "Glass" in that, for the first time in a long while, Shyamalan's newest film is a collaboration and an adaptation of previous work. The film itself is based on the novel "The Cabin at the End of the World" by Paul G. Tremblay, and the initial unproduced screenplay adapting this work was...

One of the first big names to join Apple TV+ after the streaming service launched in late 2019 was M. Night Shyamalan. "Servant" premiered later that month, teaming Shyamalan — the newly minted showrunner — with creator Tony Basgallop for a spooky psychological horror series that was initially envisioned to be a 60-episode story (via The Hollywood Reporter). When all is said and done, "Servant" will come up a bit short on its original plan, as it wraps up with a total of 40 episodes. But as its fourth and final season unfolds and looks toward its series finale in March, "Servant" is still ending on its terms. That's something of a rarity for a TV show these days, let alone one on streaming.
Shyamalan understands that very well. Before "Servant," he had dipped his toe in the TV waters as executive producer and pilot episode director for "Wayward Pines." Designed to run for three reasons,...

It’s almost hard to believe that Apple TV+ is old enough already to have a show about to reach its conclusion after four seasons, but that’s where we are with the underrated “Servant,” a twisted little gem that was created by Tony Basgallop and executive produced by M. Night Shyamalan (who has also directed a few episodes). One of the streaming giant’s first series way back in November 2019, “Servant” initially felt like something of a psychological mystery about a grieving mother given an impossible second chance, but it has descended into deeper levels of surreal chaos with each season.

A series that has gripped me from the very start, Apple TV+’s Servant is about to embark on its fourth and final season, this Friday, January 13th (which feels so very appropriate). Created by Tony Basgallop and executive produced by M. Night Shyamalan, Servant centers around the Turner family (Lauren Ambrose and Toby Kebell), who hire an unsuspecting nanny named Leanne (Nell Tiger Free), only to discover that there’s far more going on with the young woman than they ever could have imagined. And after season 3’s harrowing finale, season 4 of Servant is poised to be a proverbial powder keg, as Leanne continues to explore her powers and the Turners must adapt to their nanny’s nefarious nature.
During the recent press day for this final season of Servant, Daily Dead had the opportunity to chat briefly with Lauren Ambrose, Nell Tiger Free, and Toby Kebbell about their...

Plot: Following the suspenseful season three finale, season four will bring the final chapter of the Turner story to an epic and emotional conclusion. Leanne’s war with the Church of Lesser Saints heightens, threatening Spruce street, the city of Philadelphia, and beyond. Meanwhile, the shattered Turner family must not only confront the increasing threat of Leanne, but the certain reality that Dorothy is waking up. As the Turner family brownstone continues to crumble, questions are finally answered: who is Leanne Grayson and who is the child in their home?
Review: When Servant first debuted back in 2019, it made me incredibly uncomfortable. With static shots, extreme close-ups, and lingering camera angles, the visual framing of the series was unlike anything else on television. M. Today, the streaming service released a new teaser trailer for "The Consultant," a series based on the 2015 novel of the same name by Bentley Little. The show was created by Tony Basgallop and directed by Matt Shakman.
In the teaser, we meet the very creepy Mr. Patoff, played by Christoph Waltz ("Inglorious Basterds"), who has been hired as a consultant when a gaming company called CompWare begins to decline. He's an interesting guy -- very meticulous, clipping his nose hairs in the office and generally freaking everyone out. The company employees begin to suspect that he's more sinister than even that nose hair thing makes him seem. In fact, stray nose hairs are the least of these people's worries.

Returning cast members include Lauren Ambrose as Dorothy Turner, Toby Kebbell as Sean Turner, Nell Tiger Free as Leanne Grayson, and Rupert Grint as Julian Pearce. Executive producer M. Executive producer and writer Tony Basgallop created the critically acclaimed series, with Ashwin Rajan, Jason Blumenthal, Taylor Latham, Larissa E. Michel, Steve Tisch, and Todd Black executive producing.

Exclusive: The process of integrating MGM into the broader Amazon universe is starting to gain momentum eight months after the 8.5B sale by the tech giant was completed.
Deadline understands that employees across MGM’s television and film business who have contracts have been offered one-year extensions as Amazon begins to bring the vaunted Hollywood studio inside its entertainment division. This follows the first step in combining the workforces which involved looking at the executive levels within Amazon Studios and MGM and aligning the structures at the two companies.
The new contracts for MGM staffers, who could opt out, go through December 31, 2023 when they would become at-will Amazon employees, sources tell Deadline. The move is designed to help with the integration process, making the switch more gradual. Amazon does not employ contracts, even at the top executive level and compensation is also structured differently, with a base and stock.

Warning: This article contains mild spoilers for the first three seasons of "Servant."
M. Night Shyamalan sure is keeping busy these days. Last month, the trailer dropped for his highly anticipated horror film "Knock At The Cabin," all while he's been absolutely crushing it with the mystery series "Servant" for Apple TV+. Created by Tony Basgallop with Shyamalan serving as executive producer, showrunner, and the director of multiple episodes, "Servant" is a psychological horror streaming television series about a wealthy Philadelphia couple named Dorothy and Sean Turner who endure the tragic loss of their thirteen-week-old son, Jericho.
In an attempt to heal, the couple introduces a lifelike reborn doll as transitory object therapy. Unfortunately, Dorothy begins believing the doll is her actual child and hires a young nanny named Leanne Grayson (Nell Tiger Free) to move in to help take care of "the baby" full-time. As is the case with any Shyamalan project,...
