"Guardians of the Galaxy" director James Gunn is a music connoisseur and personally selects the film's soundtracks. These needle drops blur the line of diegesis; Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) owns a Walkman (and later a Zune) and the songs in the first two movies are all from mixtapes gifted to him by his mother. "Guardians of the Galaxy" introduced us to the adult Quill by having him dance around the barren planet Morag, listening to "Come and Get Your Love" by Redbone — perfectly capturing both Star-Lord's space cowboy persona and the film's retro musical taste.
Speaking to Absolute Radio, Gunn said he picks songs not because they're his personal favorites but because they fit the movie. "Vol. 2" features "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac, and the song's refrain of "keep us togethe," reflects the struggles of the Guardians to stay together despite their own flaws pushing them apart.

In the years leading up to the creation of one of the defining albums of thrash metal, Megadeth’s 1990 LP Rust in Peace, the band members were going through hell. Frontman Dave Mustaine and bassist David Ellefson had formed the group in 1983, after Mustaine’s ejection from Metallica, and even though they had already released three underground hit records, the band was far from stable. Drug abuse and in-fighting led to the departure of half its original lineup, and by the mid-Eighties, those same forces were about to expel those musicians’ replacements from the band.

Richard Hell is known for many things — his short-lived stint in Television, his success with the Voidoids, his long career as a downtown poet. But maybe best of all, he’s known as the handsome lothario of the 1970s NYC punk scene. Yet when cultural historian Carlo McCormick asked Hell about the connection between punk and sexuality, Hell told him that wasn’t the point. “I remember Richard Hell saying to me, ‘Well Carlo, punk wasn’t really about sex,'” McCormick says with a smile in a gallery at...

Jason Isaacs as Dr. Volmer in A Cure for WellnessIt starts with a whispered melody. It will send frissons of familiarity, of a kind of upsetting longing for clarity. You know that song the odd English girl is singing, but you can't place it. Neither can Lockhart (Dane DeHaan, who they might have called Lockjaw, as he can barely seem to spit his words out), which is what draws him into the guts of a mystery. And it draws the film into a slithering spiral, compels us to observe an autopsy of modern horror. What half-remembered giallo fugue is Gore Verbinski spooning up for us like medicine, pinioned to our chairs like one of the zombie patients in the film’s sinister clinic? A puzzle picture, a conspiracy thriller, a kind of baroque classical nightmare, A Cure For Wellness is too sturdy, busy and sure of itself to be much of a horror film.

Heebyjeeby: Miller Fails To Reclaim Glory Days of Punk
Perhaps it goes without saying that the more invested one is in the gloriously exciting New York City punk scene from the 1970s, the stronger disdain they’ll have towards Randall Miller’s latest film, Cbgb, so titled for the famed dive bar in the Bowery neighborhood which birthed the careers of numerous notable musical talents. While this is the director’s third effort in a row headlining Alan Rickman (following Nobel Son and Bottle Shock), their pairing has yet to yield a wholly satisfactory endeavor, even with the enjoyable thesp featured in juicy leading form. Miller’s latest is sure to suffer the greatest ire since it attempts to recreate a beloved golden age of musical genius with middling success. Moments of nostalgic emotion are ever so briefly reached, and evaporate so quickly that your only desire will be to...

I was seriously born in the wrong generation. While most young adults my age are cracking glowsticks and listening to DJs bump out electronica beats – Edm, whatever the hell they call it – I sit around blasting music that my friends complain is “yelling at them,” filled with monster riffs, attitude, and balls. While the true hardcore punk scene that Cbgb depicts has all but died out, featuring musicians some would argue had no talent but tremendous personalities, I consider myself somewhat of a modern day punk, refusing to conform to the preppy norms of musical society. I want it faster, louder, more rebellious, and full of passion – but also played on actual drums, guitars, and other instruments. Man, what I would give for the chance to have one night at the Cbgb club, drunkenly trudging around in the filth while some no-names called the Ramones thrashed about on stage – f#ck class,...

Your humble Playlist correspondent doesn't regret much about his life, but he does regret this: the night in 2006 when legendary Manhattan punk rock club Cbgb closed its doors for the very last time, with Patti Smith playing the final set on the famous stage, he was in New York for the first time in his entire life and didn't go. This bitterest of missed chances will hurt forever, and Cbgb now only exists in sweaty memories and booze-soaked anecdotes: but the forthcoming film about the club will perhaps numb the pain a little.“Cbgb,” opening in October, is to be Randall Miller's biopic of the club and its founder, owner and animating spirit, Hilly Kristal, who will be played by Alan Rickman. He'll be backed up by a host of young actors playing now-ageing but still-awesome rockers in their heydays, including Malin Ackerman as Debbie Harry, Rupert Grint as Cheetah Chrome,...

"Cbgb," an upcoming cinematic chronicle of the famed New York music venue, features a veritable who's-who of stars playing the great and good (and bad!) of the punk rock scene which centred on the venue in the 1980s. As the cast of Randall Miller’s Cbgb slowly began to fill out with the likes of Malin Akerman, Justin Bartha, and Rupert Grint stepping in for Debbie Harry, Stiv Bators, and Cheetah Chrome, respectively, a certain cynical quadrant began griping prematurely that the film might be a crass, Rock Of Ages-style Hollywood cash-in on the club that epitomized punk credibility for about 10 years, before becoming a crass New York cash-in. A few unorthodox period pieces/biopics are taking form in Steven Soderbergh’s “Behind the Candelabra,” Randal Miller’s “Cbgb” and "Jobs" with Ashton Kutcher. And all three are lining up some impressive ensemble casts, so let’s see who is taking over some coveted roles.

In news that I didn't see coming, Portia de Rossi has been cast as Lily Munster in Mockingbird Lane. I could see her as Morticia in the Addams Family, but not Lily. I really have no idea what direction they're taking with the show considering the cast.
I can really appreciate the understated gay twist in yesterday's Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal.
A federal judge has ruled that Brian Johnson will not be allowed to distribute Bibles at Minneapolis Pride, but Johnson will be allowed to have a booth outside the park. I've been watching this cast for what seems like forever, with Johnson screaming First Amendment, but the Pride organization as I recall leases the park and even has to provide security costs, so I see no reason Pride should be forced to rent him a booth to disrupt the happy day.

From Mvd Visual, Dee Dee Ramone - History On My Arms includes the 2003 documentary Hey Is Dee Dee Home plus new films History on My Arms, Vom In Paris and a bonus CD. "...'History On My Arms' captures Dee Dee Ramones' extraordinary personality in a way that has never been done before. Kowalski was struck by how playful and direct he was with the camera. How he wanted to connect with something inside of himself and expose his true nature. In 'Vom In Paris', Dee Dee also recounts the now infamous story about what happened between him, Johnny Thunders and Stiv Bators when they got together in Paris in 1989 to form a super punk group. Kowalski also invited Vom Ritchie, currently drummer for 'Die Toten Hosen' to come to Paris to explain the story as he remembers it. He was the drummer on those sessions and affectionately and vividly differs with what Dee Dee said.
