Exclusive: Writer-director Kyle Hausmann-Stokes has continued rounding out an impressive cast for his debut feature, the dark veteran dramedy My Dead Friend Zoe, bringing Morgan Freeman (The Shawshank Redemption), Gloria Reuben (Mr. Robot) and Utkarsh Ambudkar (Brittany Runs a Marathon) aboard for roles.
The film delving into the lives of military veterans, to highlight both their triumphs and challenges upon returning home, will have the trio starring alongside the previously announced Ed Harris, Sonequa Martin-Green and Natalie Morales.
Written by Hausmann-Stokes and A.J. Bermudez, My Dead Friend Zoe is based on Merit x Zoe, a short that Hausmann-Stokes co-wrote and directed last year, which draws on his personal experience during and after the military, as a Bronze Star combat veteran. The film tells the story of a female veteran (Martin-Green) engaged in a mysterious but comfortable friendship with her wise-cracking (and dead) best friend from the Army (Morales). When the...

William Shatner Documentary Beams Up 790,000 in Equity Crowdfunding, Selling Out in Less Than a Week
William Shatner fans bought up all the shares in the actor’s forthcoming feature-length documentary “You Can Call Me Bill” in less than a week — shelling out nearly 790,000 and topping the film’s funding goal.
Legion M’s equity crowdfunding round for the Shatner documentary, exploring the life and career of the beloved 91-year-old actor, as of Monday had sold out from reservation holders before the company opened the offering to the public. Within four days, the project raised 789,655 from 1,338 investors.
Unlike with other crowdfunding models, Legion M lets investors own an equity stake in the entertainment projects they’re backing. With the Shatner doc, fans were able to invest directly in the Shatner documentary for a minimum of 100, subject to certain SEC restrictions, and they will recoup their money before any profits are shared with Shatner, Legion M or the film’s producer, Exhibit A Pictures. While the offering has already reached the cap,...

As DC Studios’ new co-chairmen and CEOs, James Gunn and Peter Safran aren’t just the heroes DC deserves. Unlike the Dark Knight, they’re also ones it desperately needs.
Hiring Gunn — director of “The Suicide Squad” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” — and Safran, manager-turned-producer of “The Conjuring” and “Aquaman,” ended a dramatic and months-long leadership search. Following the merger of Warner Bros. and Discovery in April, new CEO David Zaslav signaled his hopes for a 10-year plan for the brand and a desire to find a Kevin Feige of his own who could create a division to rival Marvel. Then-dc leader Walter Hamada, clearly not whom Zaslav had in mind, exited last week. Talks with “The Lego Movie” producer Dan Lin went nowhere.
Maybe it was worth the wait. Producers and insiders who spoke to IndieWire say Gunn and Safran possess the singular creative vision needed to lead the Dcu — not the “Dceu,...

William Shatner in conversation with Kevin Smith at Comic-Con is the thing Trekkies love to see. It’s been two years since he’s been here, and Hall H was packed with fans Thursday for the discussion that included a first look at a clip about an upcoming documentary on Shatner’s life.
Shatner’s career spans decades, but most know him for his portrayal of James T. Kirk in the Star Trek franchise. Starting in 1966, he starred as the captain of the Enterprise for the first Star Trek TV series from 1966-1969. He would reprise his role in seven Star Trek feature films from 1979-1994.

- A little cash can go a long way when developing a screenplay, and if you happen to be working on anything related to “stories about science and technology or portray scientists, engineers and mathematicians as major characters” then a hand over from the Tribeca Film Institute’s Tfi Sloan Filmmaker Fund should be among your priorities. Today a jury comprised of Darren Aronofsky, Steven Shainberg, producer Caroline Baron, producer/writer Ann Druyan and a couple of profs and doctors selected the recipients of some financial and creative support. Among the project we find some familiar names including Amy Redford who has The Guitar coming out in November, and speaking of in November, Greg Harrison directed Courtney Cox in a film going by just that title and finally Tim Kirkman last directed Loggerheads for a very small theatrical run in 2005. The five selected projects selected received a sum of either
