Warner Bros. Pictures will bring to life a big-screen adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's novel For Whom the Bell Tolls that screenwriter David Benioff will adapt and executive produce. Universal Pictures previously held the rights to the book, which Warners is acquiring in a deal that has just been finalized. Industry Entertainment, which manages Benioff, will produce the project through its first-look pact at the studio. The project reteams Benioff with Warners, for whom he wrote the feature film Troy, based on Homer's The Iliad, and for whom he will next adapt George P. Pelecanos' crime novel Right as Rain for helmer Curtis Hanson to direct and produce (HR 10/28). Benioff, who is scripting DreamWorks' Alpha, will adapt Pelecanos' novel before taking on Bell. Although Bell has been brought to the big screen before by Paramount Pictures in 1943, Benioff said he will go back to the source material to write the screenplay. The 1943 Bell, which starred Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman, was nominated for nine Oscars, including best picture.
