In her feature film debut, “As Neves,” writer-director Sonia Méndez follows a group of teenagers in a Galician village struggling with the disappearance of a friend following a drug-fueled party and heavy snowfall that has cut off Internet access, complicating the search.
Speaking to Variety, Méndez says she was eager to explore a number of elements in the film, namely the youth of today, which she describes as the most hyper-connected generation, and the often violent transition to adulthood.
“As Neves” screens in competition at the Malaga Film Festival.
Having experienced adolescence in the 1990s and belonging to the last generation caught between the analog and digital worlds, Méndez was fascinated by the “coexistence of both paradigms,” particularly among teenagers who live in such isolated areas as the mountain village of As Neves but are nevertheless always online, “which is very common in Galicia.”

UK shoegaze outfit Ride is set to return on March 29th with their new album, Interplay. Today, they’ve unveiled a new preview of the album in the form of “Last Frontier.” They’ve also announced dates for a supporting international tour that includes shows in North America this spring.
Interplay marks Ride’s first album in five years and their third effort since the quartet’s 2015 reunion. In a statement, frontman Andy Bell said that the band’s latest single, “Last Frontier,” was initially “the runt of the litter of the very first jam session… It was our producer, Richie Kennedy, who saw the potential of the song, and we attacked this with a vengeance at Vada studio. A complete revamp of the backing track and arrangement was needed and we took it right back to basics, more towards a pounding Joy Division feel.”

UK shoegaze outfit Ride have announced their new album, Interplay, out March 29th via Witchita Recordings/Pias. As a preview, the band has shared the album’s lead single, “Peace Sign.” Stream it below.
Interplay will serve as Ride’s first album in five years and their third effort since the quartet’s 2015 reunion. Inspired by Tears for Fears, Talk Talk, and early U2, it was produced by the band and Richie Kennedy.
In a statement about the album, vocalist Andy Bell shared that while the making of Interplay took “a long time” with “many ups and downs; maybe the most of any Ride album,” it resulted in an effort that all four were proud of. “[Interplay] has seen us come through the process as a band in a good place, feeling able to shake off the past, and ready to celebrate the combined musical talents that brought us together in the first place.

Shaun Ryder and Mark “Bez” Berry of Happy Mondays have joined forces with ex-Oasis members Zak Starkey and Andy Bell for Mantra of the Cosmos, the latest supergroup to come from the UK. They’ve announced the news along with their debut single “Gorilla Guerilla.”
A press release describes Mantra of the Cosmos as “the hum of the universe and the pulsating musical pathway to the beyond,” who began making music in a remote studio in outer space. Bell, also known for his work with shoegazers Ride, shared: “It’s a pleasure to be part of Mantra of the Cosmos. Four like-minded souls who get off on the same music.” Starkey describes their sound as having “fantastic psychedelic groove, from a band of misfit outsiders and innovators.” Ryder concedes that “It’s a fucking blast mate,” with Bez concluding: “I always knew the best was yet to come.”

Erasure have shared a second track, “Shot a Satellite,” from their upcoming album The Neon, out August 21st.

When our very own esteemed Reviews Editor, Stefan Pape, published his review of Frozen on the site, I felt compelled to argue a few of the finer points with him afterwards on Twitter. It wasn’t about anything drastic – I just felt his 4-star review was missing a star – but one of the subjects we differed on slightly was that of the songs. He felt they were a little “hit or miss,” while I was firmly of the opinion that there are way more hits than misses… and then the opportunity to review the soundtrack arose, and I just couldn’t resist the chance to set the record straight.
There are two versions of the Frozen soundtrack available, a standard 32-track edition, and a Deluxe Edition that comes with an extra 27 tracks. We got our hands on a copy of the standard edition for review, and of the 32 tracks, 10 are songs,...

Andy Bell became the latest contestant to be voted off 'Popstar to Operastar' last night (26.06.11). The Erasure singer - who landed in the bottom two alongside Toploader frontman Joe Washbourn - stumbled over his words in the sing-off to 'Largo Al Factotum' from 'The Barber of Seville', causing judges Vanessa Mae, Katherine Jenkins, Simon Callow and Rolando Villazon to unanimously decide to send him home. However, the 47-year-old musician admitted he had suffered a "complete blank" due to the pressure of being in the sing-off. Andy Bell has become the fourth celebrity to leave Popstar To Operastar. The Erasure lead failed to win over the judges after landing bottom of the public vote alongside Toploader's Joseph Washbourn. Bell's fate was seemingly sealed after he forgot his words and appeared to lose confidence in his performance during a final sing-off against Washbourn. As host Myleene Klass threw voting over to the panel, judge Katherine Jenkins stated that she had "hoped [the decision] wouldn't be as clear cut", before accepting that eliminating Bell was the "totally fair thing to do". Jenkins's sentiment was echoed by Vanessa-Mae, who argued that "nerves got the better of" Bell and opted to vote him out. The Sun reports that 47 year old Andy is so “mesmerized” by Katherine’s many charms that he finds it difficult to concentrate while performing on the show.

The source added, “He can sing in front of her but finds that his mind goes elsewhere because she distracts him so much.
“It’s very bizarre. Even though he’s gay, he can’t help but be drawn to Katherine.
“She knows why he acts so strangely around her but she just thinks it’s funny.”
