Late auteur Peter Bogdanovich is still just a handshake away per his posthumous podcast, “One Handshake Away.”
Prior to Bogdanovich’s January 2022 death, the filmmaker recorded a series of interviews with fellow directors such as Guillermo del Toro, Quentin Tarantino, Ken Burns, and Rian Johnson to discuss their biggest cinematic influences.
Per Deadline, Bogdanovich named the podcast “One Handshake Away” to honor the relationship between contemporary directors and pioneering filmmakers, with each filmmaker being “one handshake away” from one another in film history.
After Bogdanovich’s passing, del Toro took over the podcast and recorded the final three episodes, interviewing Greta Gerwig, Julie Delpy, and Allison Anders, which included discussing the works of Howard Hawks, Fritz Lang, and Raoul Walsh.
Filmmakers Alfred Hitchcock, Don Siegel, Orson Welles, and John Ford were reexamined in episodes Bogdanovich recorded; the podcast additionally features exclusive archival interviews with Hitchcock, Welles, and Ford that have...

I finally got the chance to see Peter Bogdanovich’s last fictional feature recently at the Museum of Modern Art. Technically speaking, I saw Squirrels to the Nuts, the director’s cut of She’s Funny That Way, the title it was released under in 2014 in a heavily redacted form.1 For a movie with virtually no reputation, even among ardent cinephiles, this director’s cut turned out to be a surprisingly entertaining little movie—that is, if you were willing to accept it on its own, admittedly idiosyncratic, terms. The film is an oddity, a throwback to a 1930s screwball sensibility. This madcap farce follows a theater director played by Owen Wilson and a young call girl turned actress played by Imogen Poots whose paths cross sexually, romantically, and professionally as he commences rehearsals on a new play. But it was this old-fashioned approach, I understood immediately, that had been the...

Exclusive: Peter Bogdanovich’s The Great Buster: A Celebration, his documentary about movie pioneer Buster Keaton, is winding its was from a world premiere at Telluride and then Venice before landing this week at the place where Keaton plied his trade: Hollywood. The pic is set to screen Sunday afternoon in the Buzz section of the Los Angeles Film Festival.
The film produced and to be distributed by Cohen Media Group looks at the life of Keaton, a king of Silent Era films in the 1920s who invented much of the language of film used today via classics from Our Hospitality to The General, Sherlock Jr. and Steamboat Bill Jr. His work continued into the 1960s despite personal setbacks and the fear his work would be forgotten; he won an honorary Oscar in 1960.

With his first feature in almost 15 years, director Peter Bogdanovich aims for crowd-pleasing comedy without actually considering his audience. She's Funny That Way harks back to the screwball comedies of the '30s and '40s with its farcically twisted plot concerning Imogen Poots and Owen Wilson as a starlet on the rise and her neurotic director, but the narrative convolutions rarely add up to a decent punchline and the dialogue is only superficially funny. Modern moviegoers just won't get it and cineastes mightn't be too impressed either.
Immediately, Poots' Brooklyn 'New Yawk' accent strikes an odd note – is that nasal twanging supposed to be funny, or is she just overcooking it? The only thing we can know for sure about Izzy is that she's an incurable romantic,...

Peter Bogdanovich loves his screwball comedy and for his latest film, “She’s Funny That Way,” produced by spiritual protégés Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach, he reached back into the drawer for an old screenplay he wrote ages ago with former wife Louise Stratten. In fact, it was announced in the mid-90s, then called “Squirrel To The Nuts” and was rewritten in 1999 for the late John Ritter, according to our interview with Bogdanovich last year. “Then he passed away tragically and it was put on the back burner. Then I met Owen [Wilson]... it's hard to find an actor that can play comedy, particularly this type of comedy which is slightly screwball, slightly not. Owen, I just personally really love him as a person, and that part seemed perfect for him. He's one of the few actors around who has the old movie star quality. He's got a personality.” Starring...

Jennifer Aniston, Owen Wilson Talk a Hooker Out of Hooking in ‘She’s Funny That Way’ Trailer (Video)
Lots of people get laid in the teaser — and also slapped and punched
The “She’s Funny That Way” trailer takes slapstick comedy to a whole new level.
In other words, lots of people get actually slapped within the two-minute, 11-second teaser — and by the end, Will Forte even gets straight up punched-out by Jennifer Aniston.

It's been about 14 years since director Peter Bogdanovich was at the helm of narrative feature film, and now he's back with She's Funny That Way. The first trailer has just debuted, and it's certainly not going to be for everybody, but it has a classic charm that we normally don't see in films nowadays. It feels old fashioned, for better or worse, but it doesn't exactly look bad. The film follows a prostitute and aspiring actress (Imogen Poots) who has a one night stand with a married Broadway director (Owen Wilson), hoping to further her career. But the real story begins when the hooker auditions for a play starring his wife. Here's the first trailer for Peter Bogdanovich's She's Funny That Way, originally from Yahoo: She's Funny That Way (formerly Squirrel to the Nuts) is directed by Peter Bogdanovich (What's Up Doc?, The Last Picture Show) from a script...

The director of such classics as The Last Picture Show and Paper Moon is finally making a return after 14 years of absence from features, but after watching the trailer for She’s Funny That Way, I wonder if it’s anything to celebrate. Peter Bogdanovich has been keeping plenty busy over the past decade and a half, doing a little more acting, some hosting duties on TCM, maintaining a blog at Indiewire and helming some TV movies, namely biopics about Natalie Wood and Pete Rose, and a documentary on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. But his last true picture show, as far as a theatrical narrative release, was the 2001 historically inspired jazz-age farce The Cat’s Meow. For his comeback, Bogdanovich has written another wild comedy, this time with ex-wife Louise Stratten, and he’s corralled a very impressive cast, as someone of his background can easily do. Imogen Poots stars as a high-class prostitute-turned-Broadway star who...

Venice — Your enjoyment of dodgy comedy "She's Funny That Way" will depend hugely on your personal tolerance for coincidence as plot mechanic. How many coincidences need to occur before the characters might as well start saying "a wizard did it" by way of explaining the wherefores of the plot? What's your personal tipping point? Perhaps your answer will depend on genre. Even in sci-fi or fantasy, "a wizard did it" is still a pretty poor explanation unless the wizard has a satisfying motive. In a more realistic genre, the greater the number of coincidences, the greater the strain on audience credulity. The genre of farce, though broadly realistic (there are usually no wizards), is of course often borderline fantastical in terms of the believability of people's behavior and the frequency with which coincidence craps all over the characters' hopes and dreams. "She's Funny That Way" leans heavily on this creaky...

Thirty-two years after They All Laughed opened the Venice Film Fesitval, Peter Bogdanovich is back on the Lido with screwball comedy She’s Funny That Way. He spoke to the press this afternoon about the star-studded project coming together and noted that today, the kinds of smaller films he likes can only be made independently. “I don’t want to bite the hand that doesn’t feed me,” he said to much laughter, “but unfortunately, Hollywood has gone in the wrong direction.”
The out of competition She’s Funny That Way itself got a lot of laughs when it screened this morning. It stars Owen Wilson, Jennifer Aniston, Kathryn Hahn, Imogen Poots, Rhys Ifans, and Will Forte — along with blink-and-you’ll-miss-them cameos from Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter and Bogdanovich’s Paper Moon star Tatum O’Neal, as well as a longer turn by a very famous director.
