★☆☆☆☆A decade since his directorial debut Garden State (2004) offered him a platform to air his views on the quarter-life crises of a handful of waylaid young adults, ex-sitcom star Zach Braff (Scrubs) returns to the silver screen with Wish I Was Here (2014), a part-Kickstarter funded pet project he co-wrote with his brother Adam J. Braff. Though his previous, extremely divisive first feature went about meeting tooth-grating sincerity and a studied cavalcade of quirk (Natalie Portman played a Shins-loving pathological liar) with genuine visual promise, it's made to look like a masterpiece compared to the excruciating Wish I Was Here, which strikes a curious balance of having too much to say and yet saying nothing at all.

Chicago – Writer, director and lead actor Zach Braff has put it on the line for his latest feature, “Wish I Was Here.” He infamously used a crowd funding Kickstarter campaign to maintain creative control of the film, but he needn’t have bothered. The movie result is a sappy, high concept emotional manipulator with no basis in authenticity, and that might be the best thing that can be said about it.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
This film wasn’t something that showcased what makes Braff interesting. Unlike his successful cult film of ten years ago, “Garden State,” Braff casts himself in a circumstance unlike his usual character, and too far from his real life for him to understand it (and he wrote it!). Braff plays a father in this film, but with no chemistry with his kids or wife – portrayed by Kate Hudson – and he disarmingly seems estranged from the family. Some might...

Next up for us here is the Sundance dramedy Wish I Was Here, which is the sophomore writing and directing effort from actor/Garden State helmer Zach Braff. If it manages to appeal to the Academy, it’d be a first, since it was backed by Kickstarter and no film of that ilk has gotten nominated to date. In many ways, this is almost a...

Chicago – Zach Braff is an amiable personality, making his mark as “J.D.” on the TV sitcom “Scrubs” and the cult film “Garden State” (2004), which he wrote and directed. For his most recent project, he made show business headlines by using the website Kickstarter to “crowd fund” his latest film, “Wish I Was Here.”
“Wish I Was Here,” like “Garden State,” is a coming-of-age film. But this time Braff – who stars in the film, co-wrote it with his brother Adam, and directed it – portrays a 35 year old struggling actor with a wife (Kate Hudson) and two kids, coming to terms with his father’s (Mandy Patinkin) illness and possible passing. Like “Garden State,” it has a dream-like quality to it, while dealing with a different phase of life.

Both the teaser trailer and the full theatrical trailer for Zach Braff's sophomore directing effort Wish I Was Here promise a great movie, but after seeing the film at Sundance, I was underwhelmed to say the least. But the marketing department has unveiled another poster, continuing the good job of hyping up the somewhat whimsical comedic drama that again features Braff in the lead, just like his directorial debut Garden State. This time Braff is joined on-screen by Kate Hudson, Josh Gad, Mandy Patinkin and awesome child actors Joey King and Pierce Gagnon. Plus, there's some cameos that fans of Braff will really enjoy, but we won't spoil them here. It's just a shame the movie doesn't deliver something better. Here's the latest poster for Zach Braff's Wish I Was Here from E! Online: Wish I Was Here is directed by Zach Braff from a script he co-wrote with his brother Adam Braff.

"You can pick any one you want, just as long as it's unique and amazing like you." Following the first trailer boosted by The Shins, not unlike one of the trailers for Garden State, a second trailer for Zach Braff's Kickstarted, sophomore directing effort Wish I Was Here has arrived. Even though I was disappointed after my viewing at Sundance, this new trailer definitely makes me want to revisit the film to see if maybe I'll warm up to it. But at the same time, seeing clips in the context of the trailer, and knowing how they fit into the story, I'm skeptical that the film can win me over with a second viewing. Watch below! Here's the second trailer for Zach Braff's Wish I Was Here, straight from Focus Features: Wish I Was Here is directed by Zach Braff from a script he co-wrote with his brother Adam Braff.

To say that I’m excited for Zach Braff’s Wish I Was Here would be a huge understatement. I’ve been following this one literally from day one, when Braff launched the project on Kickstarter, and have been looking forward to it ever since.
Braff brought us a brilliant first teaser trailer last month, and took to The Today Show with Mandy Patinkin this morning to debut this first theatrical trailer.
Wish I Was Here tells the story of Aidan Bloom, a struggling actor, husband and dad who at 35 is still trying to find his true place in life. He and his wife are barely getting by financially, and Aidan passes his time fantasizing about being the futuristic Space Knight he always dreamed he’d be as a little kid.

Zach Braff‘s Kickstarter-financed Wish I Was Here hits July 18th, and the film finally has a trailer, but it isn’t one that’s really going to give you much to decide if you want to see it or not.
You know there are kids involved. You suspect Braff plays their Dad. Mandy Patinkin is in the hospital, and is likely Gramps. There’s also something odd going on, possibly a Walter Mitty-esque idea, but who knows.
It seems that what Zach Braff would most like you to know about his film is that he’s in it. If you need to know more than that, well, he’s not entirely sure how to sell you.
The only real clue you get, if you’re looking for something that might hint at whether the film is good, or even interesting, is that Mandy Patinkin agreed to be in it.

While Zach Braff is best known for his role on the tv sitcom Scrubs, many were surprised to see him step behind the camera for his 2004 filmmaking debut Garden State. Many were curious to see what Braff’s next effort behind the camera may bring, curiosity which was heightened when the performer put the movie up on the popular crowdfunding site Kickstarter for donations from fans to finance the film. Titled Wish I Was Here, the movie soon became one of the highest funded projects on the site. Along with taking on directorial duties, Braff also shares writing duties with Adam Braff, and stars in the film alongside Kate Hudson, Mandy Patinkin, Joey King, Jim Parsons, and Donald Faison. The first trailer for the film has now been released, and can be seen below.

A delightful new trailer for the upcoming comedy Wish I Was Here has come online.
Director Zach Braff’s follow-up to his indie breakout hit Garden State is the story of a thirtysomething man who finds himself at major crossroads, which forces him to examine his life, his career, and his family.
The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January. The Hollywood Reporter‘s Boyd van Hoeij called it, “A more mature work from actor-director-producer Zach Braff that feels like a Garden State for grown-ups.
HitFix‘s Drew McWeeny wrote, “this is the film that he took to Kickstarter, even as people complained about the idea of a millionaire asking people for hand-outs. Beyond that, though, hating “Garden State” has become a cottage industry. The only thing Braff could possibly do to counter all of the naysayers would be to make a genuinely great movie…. which, thankfully, is exactly what he did.

In Zach Braff's follow up to 2004's Garden State, he has more to riff on about struggling actors and strained father/son relationships. Wish I Wish Was Here stars Braff as an out-of-work actor who takes on the responsibility of homeschooling his son and daughter when his ailing father can no longer pay their tuition.
If you bring in Garden State as a measuring stick for this film, you're gonna leave disappointed. It simply lacks the flare and atmosphere that made Braff's directorial debut so engaging. He does provide yet another great soundtrack, but the music isn’t nearly as integral to film as it was in his previous effort. I’ll admit, there are genuinely funny and touching moments. However, the movie...

There is such a thing as putting too much of one’s self into something. Wish I Was Here, the new Zach Braff film that was partially funded by Kickstarter, is sort of the kind of film you’d expect from him. Unfortunately, the movie does nothing truly innovative and a moving second half can’t save a film that’s all over the place.
Wish I Was Here is a film about the Bloom family. Aiden (Zach Braff) is a 30 something father of two who is chasing after his dream of being an actor. It’s not working out well for him however (he’s months out of his last gig, a dandruff commercial) and this is putting a strain on his family. His wife (Kate Hudson) is working a dead-end job with a creepy coworker, his two children are defiant, and his father...

The deal closed on January 19 after Focus negotiated rights with CAA on behalf of the filmmakers. Wild Bunch represents international rights and closed a number of sales at Afm last year.
Braff famously turned to Kickstarter to fund his drama, which follows a young man at a crossroads in life.

Zach Braff’s labour of love, Wish I Was Here, is just days away from making its way to Park City for its world premiere, as intended, at Sundance.
Braff launched the project on Kickstarter last year, raising more than enough for the campaign to be funded, and he’s been treating his backers and fans to bits and pieces here and there along the way.
Last month, we got our first look at Braff and his co-stars from the film. And with Sundance just around the corner, the writer-director has shared the film’s first poster, which he notes is just for Sundance, not yet knowing what the final theatrical poster will look like.
“Wish I Was Here” tells the story of Aidan Bloom, a struggling actor, husband and dad who at 35 is still trying to find his true place in life. He and his wife are barely getting by financially,...

Nearly the entire line-up for the 2014 Sundance Film Festival has already been revealed including the Premieres for narrative and documentary films, the Spotlight and Park City at Midnight programming, and the official in-competition selections. Both films premiered at the 1994 Festival, which will be the subject of “Class of ’94,” a Power of Story panel. Here are the two official additions to the 2014 Sundance Film Festival (as of December 18th): Premieres: Wish I Was Here / U.S.A. (Director: Zach Braff, Screenwriters: Zach Braff, Adam Braff) — Aidan Bloom, a 35-year-old struggling actor, father, and husband,...

Zach Braff has already proved he knows how to direct (See: indie-classic Garden State), but he knows that he's got something new to prove with his latest project. "If this is the test case for this way of financing a movie, I want to set the bar really, really high," the Scrubs star told E! News from the set of Wish I Was Here, the Kickstarter-financed film he's currently directing and starring in after cowriting the script with his brother Adam Braff. Though Braff was initally criticized by some fellow stars for soliciting funds from average Joes, ultimately more than 46,000 donors contributed upward of $3.1 million—and it's game on! Wish I Was Here also stars Kate...

Over the past few months, we’ve been very quickly getting excited about Wish I Was Here, the project that will see Zach Braff return behind the camera for the first time since his debut, Garden State.
Braff launched the project on Kickstarter earlier in the year, completing his goal and then some, and we’ve heard various amazing pieces of casting news since then.
Most recently, we heard at the start of the month that Joey King, with whom Braff had worked on Oz the Great and Powerful, had joined the cast as his on-screen 12-year-old daughter, Grace.
And now Braff has revealed to his Kickstarter backers, of which I am proudly one, that Pierce Gagnon has been cast in the role of his 6-year-old son, Tucker.
He’ll be starring alongside Braff, Kate Hudson, Josh Gad, Anna Kendrick, Mandy Patinkin, Joey King, Jim Parsons, and Donald Faison, with...

When Zach Braff started a Kickstarter for his next directorial effort, the dramedy Wish I Was Here, he was only asking for $2 million from his fans and followers. The campaign was a hit from the start, but by the time the countdown clock hit zero this afternoon, that goal was far exceeded, resulting in $3.1 million total being added to the film's budget. Braff announced the end of the campaign with a post on his Twitter account with the above photo (expressing his extreme excitement) and the message "Thank you, thank you, thank you. I won't let you down! Lets do this." By the time the Kickstarter campaign ended, 46,520 people backed the film. Scripted by Zach Braff and his brother Adam Braff, Wish I Was Here is called a sequel in spirit to Garden State and will have the director starring as Aidan Bloom, a 35-year-old father, husband and struggling actor...

"Scrubs" star Zach Braff, who hasn't directed a theatrical film since 2004's seminal indie romance "Garden State," surpassed his $2 million goal on the crowd-funding site Kickstarter for his new feature film "Wish I Was Here." After fundraising launched on April 24, Braff racked up over $1.5 million in one day. On Saturday, he tweeted "28,000 Financiers in 3 days! Un-f-cking I will not let you down. Let's go make a killer movie!" As of April 29, Braff has over 30,000 backers for the project. His campaign ignited a firestorm of protest at the idea of millionaires turning to crowdsourcing to fund their vanity projects. In response, TheWrap weighed in on the controversy, quoting director Tony Rocha as saying "Please do not give Zach Braff your money." Braff, who plans to direct and star as he did in "Garden State," co-wrote the screenplay with brother Adam Braff. Here's a summary of the film, penned by Zach Braff...

In the wake of the "Veronica Mars" Kickstarter campaign, which raised over $5 million from fans to finally get a movie made, actor/writer/director Zach Braff saw an opportunity to make a follow-up to his directorial debut, "Garden State.
