“The Last Voyage of the Demeter” is many things – it’s a cracking good horror movie that is set almost entirely on a doomed ship traveling from Transylvania to London; it’s a refreshing expansion of “Dracula” lore; and it also is a nice nod to Universal Pictures’ classic monster-filled past. It’s existence, though, feels like a bit of a miracle, especially if you had followed the project’s development over the past 20 – yes, 20 – years. That might be the blink of an eye to an immortal creature of the night like Dracula, but in moviemaking terms, that’s an eternity.
Let’s take a look at where “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” started, with a spec script that shook up Hollywood, and where it ended up, as a big studio movie from Universal, with commentary from the eventual film’s director André Øvredal.
Just be warned: there are choppy waters ahead.

I’m a huge fan of the slasher sub-genre, particularly of slasher movies that were released in the 1980s. I’ve tried to watch as many ’80s slashers as I could get my hands on, but now and then I’ll hear about one that has slipped through the cracks. One I haven’t seen yet is the 1987 film Night Screams – so I’m glad to hear that Vinegar Syndrome are giving the film a 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release. I’m definitely going to be watching this one soon… and if you’re interested in grabbing a copy of Night Screams, you can do so at This Link.
Directed by Allen Plone from a screenplay by Mitch Brian and Dillis L. Hart II, Night Screams has the following synopsis: High school football star David has just won a four-year scholarship to the University of Oklahoma, and – with his parents...

Kevin Conroy, the voice actor considered by many fans to be the definitive Batman, died November 10, IndieWire has confirmed.
“It is with profound sadness that I send this to you today. Kevin Conroy, the quintessential voice of Batman, and a dear friend to so many of us, has passed away,” a rep for Conroy said in a statement.
News of Conroy’s passing was first reported when Diane Pershing, who co-starred with Conroy in “Batman: The Animated Series,” posted a tribute to him on Facebook.
“Very sad news: our beloved voice of Batman, Kevin Conroy, died yesterday,” Pershing’s post reads. “He’s been ill for a while but he really put in a lot of time at the cons, to the joy of all of his fans. He will be sorely missed not just by the cast of the series but by his legion of fans all over the world.

As one of the most heavily-adapted characters in popular culture, there are unlimited ways that the Dark Knight can be reinvented, rebooted, reimagined and reinterpreted for any target audience, but one of the very best spins on the comic book icon came in Batman: The Animated Series, which made Kevin Conroy the definitive Bruce Wayne for an entire generation.
Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and Mitch Brian approached a Saturday morning cartoon with the utmost respect, creating a mature and complex program that dealt with the sort or heavy themes and intricate storytelling that animated superhero shows were hardly renowned for. As a result, Batman: The Animated Series was received as an instant classic, and by the time the final episode aired in September 1995, it was regarded as one of the finest animations of the modern era.

Batman: The Animated Series is easily one of the greatest animated series ever made. If you grew up in the '90s experiencing its greatness, you're a very lucky individual. Every single episode was incredible, and one of the reasons because of that was because the writing was fantastic.
All of the writers on the series received a Writer's Bible full of details and insight about how the show and its characters were to be handled. It proves that the production team knew exactly what they wanted out of this show from the very beginning.
The Writer's Bible was written by Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and Mitch Brian, and it outlined every little detail of the series. It includes the plans for all of the characters, including the supporting characters in the Batman universe that they created. It also offers a ton of concept art and info on the format of the series.

Another twist on the classic tale of Dracula seems to be gaining new blood for its journey to the big screen.
We've already heard that Alex Proyas is working on a new origin movie called Dracula Year One, while the Transylvanian count is to make an appearance in the film adaptation of graphic novel I, Frankenstein.
Variety has now reported that director Marcus Nispel is in talks to helm The Last Voyage of Demeter, which tells the story of the ship on which Dracula travelled to England in Bram Stoker's novel.
No casting has yet been announced, but Adrien Brody (pictured) was reportedly in line to play Dracula while Val Kilmer has been rumoured to be playing the ship's captain.
Marcus Nispel previously directed The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003), the Frankenstein TV movie (2004), Pathfinder (2007) and this year's reboot of Friday the 13th.

German-born writer-director Robert Schwentke has come aboard to direct Phoenix Pictures' The Last Voyage of the Demeter, which he also will rewrite with his writing partner Mitch Brian. Last Voyage expands upon the captain's log chapter of Bram Stoker's classic novel Dracula. It is the story of the terrifying ill-fated journey of the merchant ship Demeter, which carried Dracula's coffin from Transylvania to England only to arrive at port with no survivors aboard. Bragi Schut wrote the original screenplay, which Phoenix Pictures will produce. Benderspink will executive produce. Phoenix vp production Brad Fischer was instrumental in securing Schwentke and Brian to the project and will oversee it for the company. Schwentke wrote and directed the thriller Tattoo. He also is attached to rewrite with Brian and direct the action feature Labor Day at the Walt Disney Co. and the thriller Man With the Football at Columbia Pictures. Schwentke is repped by CAA. Brian is repped by BWCS. The duo is managed by the Firm. Phoenix executive vp Andrew Kramer brokered the deals on behalf of Phoenix. Schwentke and Brian's deals were negotiated by attorney Karl Austen.
